Wenger: we’re motivated to improve our defence

After Thomas Vermaelen spoke earlier this week about how criticism of Arsenal’s defence didn’t bother him one bit, Arsene Wenger says that the team can certainly do better in this area.

Speaking at his pre-West Brom press conference, the manager said, “It’s down to numbers. When you conceded goals you have to accept that you have defensive problems. That’s the same for every club. We scored five against Chelsea, this week everybody questions the defence of Chelsea.

“That’s part of our game and when we conceded eight at Man United that was a subject we had to face. I believe we have improved, we have shown in again on Tuesday night but it must be a motivation for us to improve our defensive record, which at the moment is not good.”

If Arsenal win by more than one goal tomorrow they’ll find themselves with a positive goal difference for the first time this season. Obviously the day at Old Trafford had a big impact on that but it’s still a remarkable stat for an Arsenal team ten games into a Premier League.

And Arsene has warned his team there’s is no room for complacency after the epic win against Chelsea during which their not-racist at all captain fell over to set up Arsenal’s fourth goal.

“The last thing that should creep in now is complacency,” he said. “We have come so far, through difficult times, I believe that we have an intelligent group. We need to realise that there is a lot more to achieve for us to come back into a stronger position.”

Lets hope the goals keep flying into the opposition net, not our own!

Funny how things can change so much so quickly. It doesn’t feel all that long ago when everyone felt like we had lost a game before it had even begun if djourou was injured.

Now we have a fit Verminator, an ever improving (and already great cb) koscielny and anestablished player in Mertersacker.

Things are looking good. Maybe in January we could sign another CF and offload Chamakh. Seeing as we’re playing West Brom I’ve seen a couple of players they have that we could do with. Odemwingie or Shane long over Chamakh any day of the week for me.

I am fine with Wenger not buying a centerback in January. That said he definitely needs to splash some cash on a creative midfielder like Hazzard, Goetze or even Marvin Martin. All three of those guys are going to cost some money but they are young and will drive us forward.

You say that, but have you ever actually watched those guys play? I mean regularly. If you have, then do you think they’re actually better than what we’ve got now. I mean, just because the press linked us to them, does it mean they’re better players? I’ve seen quite a lot of Geotze…great player but not Arsenal class

The thing about Gotze is that for a 19 year old his technique is remarkable. To be performing at such a level with with german champions is no small feat.

I personally think Arsenal are the right team for him to further his development. But we certainly shouldn’t pay crazy money for his services. This is however, only my opinion. It’d be interesting to see what other gooners think about him

Theoretically speaking, where would Hazard play? I wa under the impression he was more of a winger. Opposite Gervinho maybe?

Master Bates

he is a Winger so I think he should play as a WINGER …I am not expert so I could be wrong

paddymac

Let’s not forget we have Jack waiting in the wings…

Stevie T

Let’s not kill off Miyaichi and AoC’s career, they will be great playing on our wings in years to come.

Always a gooner

Arsene should live hazard to the money bags who think they can get anybody then if truly such quids are in d coffers, go 4 poldoski or a proven forward maybe huntelaar afterall or wofinskel… My mind tells me hazard is a nasriesque in terms of loyalty.
