RVP eyes Cup double

When morale is low in the camp and on the terraces you need your figureheads to stand up and take responsibility. While Arsene Wenger has never shied away from the firing line it’s great to see Robin van Persie also taking it upon himself to provide a pep talk to the supporters.

OK, so the Dutchman turned to Facebook to make his statement – granted it’s not exactly Henry IV before the Battle of Agincourt – but it’s a start.

Looking to buoy confidence ahead of Sunday’s FA Cup fourth round clash with Aston Villa, the club captain stressed that despite recent events there was still plenty to play for in the coming months.

“There are plenty of games still left, we have recovered from reverses like this before and we will win again, so anybody writing us off is making a mistake,” he wrote on the social network.

“This could still be a good season for us. We have the FA Cup to look forward to and the Champions League.

“We will all be giving 100 per cent to make sure we bring one of those trophies home, hopefully both of them.

“Let’s all stick together and fight.”

A bigger statement of intent would be for him to sign a new contract; that would lift morale like nothing else too.

Here’s to hoping!

Ty

I would be ecstatic with one trophy and a top 4 finish.

Also, I reminisced about Eduardo yesterday, watched some compilation videos and such. Can we bring him back to the club? For old time’s sake…

Cygan's Left Foot

I hope we will win something and we have a chance. But our problem is our Bank Manager, I am at the point where I have lost hope with the Bank Manager managing the football team, would he get some players to help RVP and some of the quality players we have? Of course not. Have we got squad, enough quality players and a manager can implement winning mentality in the team? Of course not. Our bank manager instead of winning games and signing players, he is busy balancing the book and worrying about the economy in europe and around… Read more »

limerick

tired of hearing your ‘bank manager’ comments.

STFU or support another club.

Jamie

Facebook? The Sun?

I’m guessing Arsenal.com don’t have an exclusivity agreement with RVP when it comes to press releases 😉

SmokingGunner

I know people talk about the implications of finishing 5th and missing out on the CL but I am torn. obviously I would be devastated at us not being in the CL but more than anything right now I want to see our Captain raising a trophy and realistically the FA cup is the only option. Silver lining and all, I reckon we would be favourites in the Europa and I have thursday nights off……heh.

Master Bates

finishing 5th will wake the Board up , they’ll start spending to make sure they get back….and ye I think we can still attract the kind of players we usually buy even without UCL football .

It will be so nice to watch our team win the FA CUP . according to negatives and media you are completely incompetent unless you win the Carling Cup or FA cup .

Cygan's Left Foot

Oh dear, listen to yourself Mr Bate, how you are happy with the board to wait till we drop out of the top four to sign player, and then sign player to just go back in the top four!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Didn’t we wait all this time to compete????? Didn’t we build the stadium to have great income to buy??????? How the Bank Manager HYPNOTIZED the like of Mr Bate, He installed losers mentality not only in the players but some of our fans.

Steve

Win the champions league and we could knock out Chelsea or Tottenham (depending where they finish) automatically…. I’d love that to happen to be honest.
Funny thing is; we made it to the final with a makeshift defence that worked their asses off and only lost due to a poor refereeing decision against Barcelona (seems to be a running theme against them), so there is no reason why we can’t do it again. A bit of luck with favourable draws and we could be there.

critic

there cud be 5 english teams in UCL next term if arsenal/chelsea win UCL and don’t finish in top 4/

Steve

I thought that 4th missed out. Isn’t that what happened when Liverpool won it but finished like 6th?

SmokingGunner

I am pretty sure Everton also got a chance to qualify but didn’t make it to the group stages.

Cygan's Left Foot

The rules have changed since the Everton and Liverpool. The new rules now, if 5th place wins it, the 4th place lose out and only the top three qualify plus the winner.

Mooro

Totally off subject, so apologies, but just picked up a rumour that Jack has suffered a stress fracture.

I hope to God that this is horseshit. If it isn’t, the cheque book HAS to come out.

Master Bates

to hire a new medical team ? because buying a new player will just be like treating a symptom ,It seems injuries will always catch up no matter how big our squad is

Steve

The stress facture was his original injury and what he had surgery at the start of the season to fix. He had just started the rehabilitation for it but not sure if it’s happened again. Seems unlikely as a problem would have been picked up on all the scans afterwards but you never know

SmokingGunner

Yeah news is spreading that he has had a set back.

Voldermort

We could win the fa cup, but the problem is our priorities are with the cl and the prem. the realist among us don’t think we can win the cl and 4th place is obviously still on but getting harder by the week. So to win the fa cup we have to play our strongest team which we can’t because the squad is decimated by injuries and is not strong enough regardless to go for all 3. It’s a catch 22 thing. Do we put out our strongest team in the hope of getting the only trophy we can realistically… Read more »

Mooro, i don’t use twitter but someone told me the same about an hour ago and it’s on twitter. Bloggs maybe able to shed some light on it ?

Thorough

2 cups and a top four finish? That will be like a treble.. At least we can dream.

Chinedu

Dream, dream, dream, dreeem, when am with u,in by mind when I need u,all i have 2 do is…Dream on,our dear captain, dreams do come truth, but maybe not at this club that has turned 2 a nightmare of DREAMS,All I have to do is…

Midfield Corporal

I know champions league is important to us in the wide scheme of things but it does get tiresome always concerning ourselves with qualification for a tournament we aren’t realistically going to win. We qualify, get knocked out then hope we qualify again. I would like to see a piece of silverware this year, and if we finish 5th maybe the board will rethink how we move forward. I’d be quite happy to go back to the old European, Uefa and cup winners cups. They only lost credibility because of the money on offer in CL, if that was restructured… Read more »

SmokingGunner

They definitely need a shake up imo.

Steve

But it’s the money that you get from qualifying that the clubs needs and helps us to keep in the black until the debts are cleared.
Champions league pays out 30 mil while the Europa league pays out like 5 mil. Also, the calibre of player available is higher in the champions league as they want to showcase their talents ahead of international tournaments and against the best teams in the world from that year.

Mooro

The European competitions are all a joke, totally ruined by UEFA’s greed and general cuntishness.

The Champions League should be just that, and teams like Dynamo Ballbag should have to pre-qualify to get into the proper competition.

Having champions only would then improve the stature of the ‘secondary’ competitions by having better quality teams involved.

Won’t happen though due to aforementioned greed/cuntishness.

Midfield Corporal

Dinamo Ball Bag were a wonderful team in their day, only eclipsed by Sparta Vagflap in my opinion.

Steve

I totally agree that the champions league should be just champions rather than also include essentially the losers of the leagues.

binda

you say that now, but if we didn’t have basel, then who would’ve sent Man United crashing out of the cup?

heihaci

we are definitely not winning the CL
Top 4 finish and FA cup are going to be difficult but achievable

Merlin's Panini

off topic,
new Harry Redknapp song:
“Harry Redknapp spells his name
E I E I O”

Merlin's Panini

“and to cheat tax he used his dog
E I E I O
with a woof woof here…”

allegedly…

Hary Rednap

I fink thats bang aht ov orda. I’m a futball manajer not a barrow boy. I wudnt even no how to avoid tax. Wots rong wiv my dog avin a bank account anyway.

Cygan's Left Foot

Arry boy new name is Rossie47. That is not his dog name, what is wrong with the law in this country, a man can not change his name any more and open a bank account abroad????

Free Rossie47 the artist formerly known as Arry boy.

ravi

Dont think we win any trophies with our current team. I know i sound negative but its true. For us to to even stand a chance we need no injury problems and thats never going to happen.

[…] Meanwhile, van Persie has urged his team to pick themselves up and focus on winning something this season. […]
