Giroud happy and emotional after Montpellier win

Olivier Giroud may not have scored against his former club last night, but the former Montpellier man declared himself happy with his performance in Arsenal’s 2-1 win.

The Frenchman provided an assist for Lukas Podolski to score Arsenal’s equaliser and battled hard throughout the game despite receiving little in the way of service and even less in the way of chances to open his Gunners account.

“It was very emotional,” he said. “I tried to ignore the context, not going out, not to be distracted. I think I did well because even if I did not score tonight, I gave a decisive ball [for Podolski].

“I’m pretty happy this evening as we won again and it’s a good start to the group stages, we remain undefeated.”

Giroud also enjoyed the night and the chance to catch up with his former teammates despite the fact they gave him no time or space as well as a good few kicks, and felt their performance was encouraging.

“It was my pleasure to share little moments with my former teammates before and after the game. I am happy to be back here and I think that Montpellier will have its say in this competition.”

Overall the Frenchman can be quite happy with his work last night despite not scoring that ever-elusive first goal for his new club, but after just four games the pressure is intense. You get the feeling that the sooner it happens, the better, and he’ll play with more freedom and confidence after that.

What odds a late winner on Sunday? No pressure, mind you.

I believe when Giroud starts scoring he wouldn’t stop. He may not have the same technique and sharpness as rvp but I belive he’ll come through as a top striker. I hope he starts on sunday against city, he’ll surelly score goals this season. Let’s keep faith in the team Gunner4Life!

Wale

Thierry Henry to travel from the states and bitch slap giroud during half time at citeh.

A slap from a legend, that oughta trigger the goals. Come on you giroud!

Dr Baptiste

Henry took 8 games to score his first goal while Giroud has only played in 4. Let’s give him a bit of time eh…

Gunrippee

Yeah but henry came In when he was shit then wenger transformed, giroud has come in as a striker with 20 goals and from the french champions. If your logic is to be used then I think he should take much less time than henry!

just sayin.

Dr Baptiste

He wasn’t shit, as shown by his time with Monaco when Wenger was manager. We got him when Juventus didn’t know how to use him properly and so he looked worse than he actually was.

Gunripper

“Juventus didn’t know how to use him properly and so he looked”. I would take this arguement and employ it on walcott, he wants to play as striker but we are now using him as a winger. Isn’t that not using properly?…..so can we now say that walcott is playing awful because he’s not a striker?. I think not. Henry at monaco was never good enough so they sold him to juve which at that were never giants. Wenger worked on henry, he transformed him to a top notch striker much like he will with chambo (MF). Anyway giroud should… Read more »

Dr Baptiste

You’re personally tired of defending after 3 games?! Further proof that some fans need to have everything in a instant. You’re comments on Henry just show the lack of knowledge you have about one of our own legendary players. Wenger had him as a striker at Monaco at a young age and he did well for his age. Juventus decided he would play as a winger and it didn’t work. Wenger bought him, moved him back to being a striker and the rest is history. Also this myth that Walcott is a striker is exactly that, a myth. He played… Read more »

Hudson Hornet

I have to say I would play Gervinho as first choice.

On what I have seen so far. Podolski has proved me wrong, seems a great buy. But deeply concerned about Giroud. Time will tell, but do we have the time?

Pearson

A big strong boy (Giroud) who can also hold up play, he pulls defenders around with his runs, and he has a good rapport with that beast, Podolski. I hope he can start to exert his influence and score a few.

Gutbukkit Deffrolla

He’s already exerting his influence. He registered an assist in the last game, and his movement in the final third gives Podolski and Cazorla a little bit of space to work their magic. I’m happy with Giroud so far. Of course I’d like to see him score soon, but it is hardly the desperate need that the Press and the doom mongers would have you believe. RVP went longer than this without scoring on two occasions last season, I think (in terms of minutes played), and there was barely a word written about it..

Casper

@Uncle Sam, I completely understand what you mean. I think he’ll find the back of the net, say to himself, “*That’s* what I need to do?” and we’ll sit back and watch him cruise to 20+ this year. He seems a patient man, and we know the boss is a patient man. I also think the quest to open his account will prove a galvanizing moment for this team. There are returnees, injury LANS, and new players, and having a focus like this can only bond them quickly and pay off later in the season. When it’s a tough game… Read more »

Grrrrr

4-6-0. That is all.
65th minute, giroud in 4-3-2-1.

Gunripper

So far so good giroud……a hatrick of missed chances now I think it’s all behind him and we’ll eventually, see that EVENTUALLY, see a goal for this man. Bould to make a substitution in the 72, 4….what time was it? Never mind. Then hold up for the rest of the game just tells you giroud needs to up him game, take your chances man (eg the cazorla pass that I reckon should have been in the net), they never come easy. Your hard work betrays your goal tally man. I feel for you, I really do.

Comedian

Well that lay off for podolski was good one, and it did seem everyone in the team really wanted to get giroud on the scoresheet noticed one when podolski who could have gone for a shoot saw giroud made a pass to him but the opposition got behind him but that just showed everyone wants giroud to score.

Aaron

I get the feeling that when he does eventually score it will be similar to when Torres was on that awful run and scored against Barcelona, every member of the squad where ever they are on the pitch will come and celebrate with him. Nobody wants it more than Giroud but it’s getting to the point where the crowd will be willing him rather than getting restless and the players will be a lot more supportive if he misses a golden chance. When he does score that first goal we will all feel the release in pressure and hopefully it’ll… Read more »

ontheup

I see the parallel but let’s not forget Torres was a £50m purchase – and that a year and a half into his Chelsea career he still has not delivered the goods. By making this comparison you’re putting undue pressure on Giroud. It’s been 5 games into the season and the team has not lost yet. Let’s not lose our focus.

(but yes on a side note I would love, LOVE, Giroud to score more than RVP)

Heh

I just hope all this cases we make for giroud really mean something. I’d say 5 games is more than enough to get off the mark but maybe with him it takes time coz we really are trying to play to his strengths.

Dr Baptiste

It took Bergkamp 5 games but took Henry 8, so there is no time scale for X player needing to score. Would you rather we kept winning, Giroud pulling defenders out of the way for other players to score or making sure Giroud scored but suffering for it? As long as he is assisting the team in doing what he clearly does best, then I’m fine.

Steve Bould's hairdryer

Rv what??

Hashkibob

This is ridiculous. In two of our five games no one scored at all and giroud didn’t exactly get very much time against Southampton did he. To judge at this point is foolish. Too many fools.

Ermias

Unless Giroud’s 1st goal comes in the 90th min in the 2nd leg of a CL semi-final to clinch a place in the final I don’t think the reactions will be similar.

The team will be happy for him, but it won’t be a huge celebration like it was when Torres killed off Barca to reach the final.

50 Shades of Ramsey

it seems daft that it has gotten to this situation so quickly, who has created this pressure?

mulidenno

sure will be glad if he scores against city in the weekend…..G4L

welile

I hope he scored early cause he is a very good player

Bobolancs

Yanga-Mbiwa – he looks a player! Just saying…

Heh

And a potential cunt too.

ShuggieTodd

I thought Belhanda was good too. And the one who kept diving was actually not too bad….

Finsbury Park Gooner

If a player dives so cynically, I quite honestly don’t care how good he is. Theatrics could’ve cost us dear last night, I’m relieved the ref wasn’t easily conned.

Incidentally, I reserve the right to turn two blind eyes to any Arsenal players with previous form for simulation.

Hashkibob

I thought cabella was by far their best player, very dangerous. But yes an unforgivable diving bastard too.

bazza

People do forget Girould has not had many games yet his fitness is getting better his all round play is superb and he will come good

CB

Wouldn’t it be great if he is like all Arsenal legends and scores his first in the Southampton game?

Shame this is on the 1 January…

Dee-jay

He’s gonna make Joe Hart look like a Blue Square GK on Sunday

Henners

this made me laugh harder than it should have

alex

Hmm, not sure if I’d start him against City. I don’t think he did much wrong but the fluid front three that we played against Southampton could cause them more problems.

robbie kahlow

Nice one Dee-jay. Great that most Arsenal fans think like you. However we do have a small amount of schmocks who will always be negative.

JackA

Jesus, judging by most of the below comments, the kids are still off school? I can’t even understand half of them.

Anyway, for me, clearly Giroud has it all there – he makes smart runs, has made some great flick-on’s and works tirelessly for the team. I think at the moment, that little bit of luck every striker needs (ask Gervinho!) is deserting him. It will come and much like Podolski, when it does, I can see him going on a run. He’ll be just fine.

On another note, I’m quietly optimistic for the City game. COYG

hannah nayoga

we just have to keep playing him, keep the faith n the bangs will come. it was great resilience from the boys yesterday

Rossi88

Give the guy a chance. What service has he had? Yday he had one pass from cazorla, but where was the shout, time……..turn…….or whatever. the understanding will come. i say after citeh and chelshit he will grab some goals against the small fry. defo keep him in the team at least for the next 5 games. come on giroud, you can it! Cut JT’s fuckin head off!!!

ShuggieTodd

Giroud is going to be great. There’s no doubt in my mind about that. Once that first goal comes, and let’s not put a time frame on it, the floodgates will open and his handsome mug will be all over the back pages.

BTW, Belhanda looks pretty useful eh?

Goon Goon Goon

It’d be better to bring on Giroud in the 2nd half against citeh when their defenders a bit tired. He’ll hassle them abit and hopeully they’ll make aone mistakes. The ox will shine this weekend ;o)

Glenn Helder

Oliver comes across as well-spoken and intelligent. Seems like a good guy.

I’m backing him to stuff one in on Sunday.

If he needs any inspiration I’m happy to send on some VHS tapes of me in action.

On second thoughts…

giles

anytime i have seen him he’s been pretty good. He’s gonna be a false 9-ish kinda guy in this team and as such wont be on the end of everything-he’ll start sunday to keep kompany Company, but the majority of attacking will be from around him.Hopefully people realise this and stop racheting up the pressure like mindless tools with fox vulvas for brains..Why do we have to react to everything?let it be,it’ll be fine.

Too Drunk To Be Offside

I like the player. He has the best movement I have seen in a player in a long long while. The movement, has opened up holes in the defence of other teams. Poldi’s goal against Liverpool and the space he got was purely because of Giroud’s excellent run and movement, and the first goal yesterday, was down to Giroud’s movement, who drew both the defenders in leaving an alley for Poldi to run into unchallenged. Given the hell Kompany had against Ronaldo yesterday, I expect him to do a super job against City. I say start with the same team,… Read more »

Eric Irish gunner

He’ll come good only 5 games in and did’ent start in them all, have faith fellow gunners

Cazoreta

You know, to be honest, I prefer it this way. It’s better he starts his Arsenal career slowly than starting it all guns blazing. A certain Maraoune Chamakh springs to mind… For all his goals in his first season my fellow fans, where is Chamakh now? Let’s be grateful that we have Gerv, Podolski and others chipping in. Happy days.

Arsene

Bulllllllllshiiiiiiiiiit

MacDuff

Chamakh will score for Arsenal this season, mark my words

Pearson

A late winner? No thank you.
A first half hat trick would be better, please, and another clean sheet. Thank you.
I don’t ask for much do I? Keep the faith.
