Arsenal’s band of loanees provide cause for concern

Arsenal often loan out such a high number of players simultaneously that it is usually rather difficult to keep track of their respective developments. This season, however, that task has been far simpler, owing largely to the fact that many of the young Gunners currently on temporary transfer have struggled to feature regularly for their temporary sides.

There have been some notable exceptions, with Chuks Aneke performing well enough at Crewe Alexandra to earn two extensions to his deal with the League One side, the most recent of which will see his deal run until the end of next month. The 19 year old has performed well so far this campaign, demonstrating an ability to play in a deeper midfield role than he is used to, whilst also showcasing his impressive passing ability.

The majority of the other Arsenal loanees, however, have endured torturous spells on the road. Ryo, for example, has only started once for Wigan Athletic, making a further five substitute appearances at the DW Stadium. Granted, the Japanese youngster has struggled with injury in recent weeks, but he is clearly not a major part of Roberto Martinez’s plans and a termination of his loan deal in January would surely be the best solution for all parties, as it would provide Arsenal with a further, if hugely inexperienced option on the left flank. The most likely option, however,  is that he will remain with Wigan until the end of the season as such agreements are difficult to break.

Benik Afobe, too, is struggling at Bolton Wanderers, which has traditionally been a happy breeding ground for young Arsenal talents, such as Jack Wilshere and Ryo himself. Afobe, though, has struggled to gain a regular place in the side and has found the net just twice. Once billed as one of the Academy’s brightest talents, Afobe is still to make his competitive debut for the Arsenal first-team and, at present, is in danger of being usurped by new flavour of the month Chuba Akpom in the striking department.

Joel Campbell has fared a little better at Real Betis. The striker, who has consistently battled with work permit issues that have prevented him from appearing in red and white at any level, did well at Lorient last campaign, and has featured 10 times for Betis this time around, although, like Afobe, he has struggled on the goal front, scoring only once. A powerful presence and adept at delivering good crosses, it is currently unclear whether Campbell will find himself at Emirates Stadium next season, although the Costa Rican certainly needs to develop more consistency in his game before he is able to be considered a genuine option.

These are not just isolated arguments to prove a point- Conor Henderson and Daniel Boateng, not to mention more experienced players such as Nicklas Bendtner and Ju-Young Park, have also struggled to feature regularly. Loan spells have worked wonders for Arsenal in the past, as the likes of Wilshere, Wojciech Szczesny and Alex Song have shown, but the success or otherwise of this season’s contingent demonstrates that, in some cases, far more thought and consideration needs to be put into where some of these youngsters are sent and how they are managed at their temporary clubs.

Some of the lads haven’t been helped by the fact the manager that signed them on loan has been sacked. Understandably the new managers do tend to dump the players on loan as they look to build for the future.

Gary

Ryo’s situation is the most frustrating. He looks like he has lots of talent, and is the most likely to make it. It doesn’t help though, when a club takes him on loan and uses him as backup, like Wigan have done. Martinez hasn’t given him a chance. We shouldn’t loan any more players to them. He would have been better off staying with us. He would have got a few starts in the Carling Cup and would have been able to train with the first team, under the tutelage of Wenger. We could have sent him out on loan… Read more »

From Wigan’s point of view though, at the start of the season they probably thought they would be in a position to able to afford to use Ryo more than they have.

As it is, their league position necessitates that they rely more on proven members of the team over potentially great works in progress. Ryo’s injury doesn’t help things either.

Comedian

Wigan play like shit for the first half of the season.i have no idea how they get it up later and manage to stay in the league.if they were gonna use ryo it should have used for the early part of the season, but their manager doesnt understand that . Yeah we can all later end of season but the league in wigan is played only for 1/3rd of the season.

Theeeo

Even worse for Ryo is the fact wigan have just signed man u winger come striker Angelo Henriquez on loan pffft. think we should recall Ryo ASAP n send him off elswhere.

Saurabh

It would have been better to let Ryo stay with Feyenoord.. Not only was he getting games on a regular basis he was becoming a fan favorite..

J0hnire

Arsenal wanted to keep his homegrown status by loaning him out in England. Would have been great though they loved him there!

stonedwasherman

Fantastic article. Extremely level-headed perspective.

Ryo and Afobe seem to be the ones that have suffered most in terms of what was expected and what they’ve delivered so far.

Can you pull out some stats for each of these players, Jorge?

Harish

Thanks for the update, Blogs! Real shame what’s going on with Ryonaldo. I hope we can resolve a better opportunity for him – it’s all he needs really. Also a shame about Afobe, i was hoping by January we could use him as a bench warmer, and give him more opportunities from there. Then again, at least we have Akpom being able to do his part. Also, I wonder if Aneke’s new role as described above would shift Wenger’s thinking on him? Maybe he can play a Tevez/Rooney type role in the future, going forward to strike deadly but otherwise… Read more »

Such a shame. Ryo should’ve stayed with us. He provided an assist in his only start this season. Clearly, his injury isn’t helping him, neither is Wigan’s manager. We should figure out a way to get him back in January. Of all our youngsters, him and Eisfeld are destined to make it big.

nujt

I fully agree with you. He would’ve played more games if he had stayed with us, be it with the U-21s and/or the reserves. I’m all for bringing him back in January.

czebex

What about Wellington Silva? Someone remembers this lad?

THEREISBEARCUM

Doing really well in UFC. Will go far.

ETID

Im pretty sure that aneke cannot extend his loan anymore as he has extended the maximum amount of times. so like henderson and boateng he will be returning. personally with so many of these guys making no impact i think we should recall those who we consider to have a future with the club. so that we can give them better opportunities elsewhere. those that we dont consider to have a future should have their contracts paid up and terminated. However if these lads are not anywhere near threatening the homegrown/non-homegrown rule then there is no rush as we have… Read more »

Furthermore of that list x1 are first teamers still in this years squad although some are out on loan obviously. i would have no problem if many were replaced with the reserves. for example fabianski our third choice keeper could be replaced by martinez, squillaci our 5th choice centre back could be replaced by miquel. i would have no problem replacing arshavin with ryo nor chamakh with afobe. however i think djourou diaby and gervinho need replacing with first team quality

ETID

And santos.

obviously denilson park eastmond watt and bendtner do not really need replacing. Though i would see no harm at all officially promoting the likes of aneke eisfeld gnabry and meade into the first team squad as their replacements thus bringing end to the formers arsenal careers.

InTheArse

How can the TGSITW have bad time. He is just an arsenal spy in Juventus.

Harish

What is TGSITW?

The Greatest Striker In The World – Niklous Bentner

Crevzyyy

What concerns me more is how we are shoving players out on loan because we cant get rid of them! Excatly like the most likely January outcome of Marouane Chamakh. A loan is supposed to be for gaining experience so that they return a better player, fresh and raring to go. Chamakh, Park, Bendtner, Arshavin (last season), Denilson, Eastmond are players clearly not in Arsene’s present or future plans so surely we need to do more (possibly cut a few losses) and start again with those areas of the squad. A loan shouldnt be a way to forget a player… Read more »

Alex

Completely agree. If only the players that get pushed out by loans didn’t have such high wages then they could get sold. Or if only they would lower their wage demands for prospective clubs & put their playing career over money. But hey what do I know about how these players think about their careers/money.

Domhuail

Crevzzy and Alex…..loaning has a number of purposes, not always mutually inclusive or compatible, but usually necessary: 1) For gaining experience ( If they are kids or new to english Football) so that they return a better player, fresh and raring to go as you rightly said. 2) To reduce the wage bill since the loanee’s salary is usually paid (partially or fully) by the receiving Club, 3) To help them overcome frustrations and injuries at their home Club and offer them a new start elsewhere, without losing them entirely. 4) To force them to face true competition and mature… Read more »

Should call back RYO.If Wigan are not going to play or he doesn’t feature in their plans they wouldn’t have a problem with him coming back in January either. I heard Steve Clarke mention that they can’t do much if Chelsea call back Lukaku(on a season long loan). So its definitely possible. Same with Afobe too. They definitely need to be playing regularly now instead of rotting on the bench

feygooner

I’d imagine that different loans have different clauses…..even in Football Manager you can set callback options.

Zack

Joel Campbell’s one Betis goal is sure worth a look though, if you haven’t seen it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aW1VFeVpNrE

One glaring obvious reason why most havent played reguarly is because maybe they just havent been good enough. Now im of the opinion that Roberto Martinez is a good manager. If he had a player who trained well and showed they could bring something to the team, he would play them. So he must not think Ryo is there yet. And to be fair, Arsene did say when we signed him up that he was very raw…….surely would have been better to go championship standard, learnt the hard part of the game and given more of a chance no? Bradford… Read more »

…still hurts : (

Apostolos

Afobe and Ryo have the talent ,but really have just struggled with injuries or bad form(Afobe). But I think Chuba Akpom and Gnabry are already ahead of them for a first team place because they have so much talent, the’yre movement and speed is unreal for their age not to mention their strong enough to play in the premiership right now. Issac Hayden’s one to watch as well(CDM/CB,also only 17 and plays with the U21’s),not enough Aesenal fans know about him and should. While our loanees might not work out our youth team is full of talent though(Meade/Olson/Toral/Bellerin just to name… Read more »

kev

but u saw ryo play in the premier league last year played great against chel$ea so just bcuz we seen gnabry play a decent game a few weeks back doesnt automatically put him ahead of ryo and akpom has been brilliant at the reserve level just as afobe had been so they clearly should go on loan first b4 jumping into the first team like ur saying

Apostolos

I guess will see,Ryo was awesome with Feyenoord a few years ago and Afobe’s scored goals at every level, they’re good. I just think Akpom and Gnabry are going to be really good players for Arsenal, maybe I’m wrong but I’ve watched them play a lot and still think they’ll be in the 1st team sooner(Wenger even said Akpom might get a 1st team chance this year;recently)

Akshai

great to see jorge bird posting on arseblog! his blog is excellent- way to grab a good one, mr. blogs!

Bendtner's Ego

Afobe played fairly well in the early part of the season, if I recall correctly. The Bolton fans liked him.

Just you

BoltonM

Bolton fan here with some feedback on Afobe and Ryo. Afobe has been poor. Really poor. We’ve seen the odd glimpse from him but it was blink and you miss it. He looks lazy, disinterested and has shown nothing to suggest he is a good player. From what we’ve seen of him so far he’d struggle to make an impact in League 1. Ryo started out well for us last season but was extremely light weight. After about 2 months it was almost like he’d been sussed out by the opposition. After that he was quite poor and ineffectual. Possibly… Read more »
