Arsenal may not have been at their best on Saturday, but while attacking guile was lacking fighting spirit certainly wasn’t, according to both Arsene Wenger and Aaron Ramsey.
Reflecting on a superb defensive performance which ensured the Gunners left Craven Cottage with another clean sheet as well as three vital points, Ramsey highlighted that his teammates are now talking more and playing further up the pitch.
“We’re defending really well as a team,” the Welshman told Arsenal.com.
“We’re defending high up. Communication is good between the team and the two of them. Everyone is working for each other at the moment and I think everyone can see that.
“It was important to win the game. We’ve given a lot in every game we’ve played this week and maybe that showed at times here. We weren’t as fluid as we normally are but we dug in, kept a clean sheet and were up for the fight again.
“It’s always a difficult place to come to. In the last couple of seasons, it’s always been tough and it was no different again here. We kept a clean sheet and scored the goal so we’re delighted.”
Luis Suarez’s late equaliser for Liverpool against Chelsea means Arsenal’s destiny is still in our own hands, however, with Spurs winning against Manchester City the race for the top four is as tight as ever.
Praising his side’s character down by the Thames and paying lip service to the fact his players celebrated the win by throwing their shirts to the travelling support, a relieved Arsene Wenger told Arsenal Player:
“We came through it. The character in the team is fantastic. When the ball was in the box in the last five minutes we always [used to] concede a goal and now we don’t. That means that the resilience is there and the team has learnt.
“The fans see that the team fights. Even when we don’t play absolutely outstandingly, we fight. That’s what the fans want.
“Your fans want to be proud of the team. They love the Club and of course want the players to act exactly the same. I think it’s a nice gesture from the players to do that [throw their shirts into the crowd].”

I think the lack of finances has finally caught up with us. Wenger has only spent what he has sold since we have moved to the emirates. The reduced sponsorship to fascilitate the stadium, has really tightened the purse strings. Next season the money will come in, but perhaps still be negated by the lack of champs league revenue 🙁 I still have hope we can beat utd though 🙂

Don’t get me wrong, it is fantastic to see us grinding out these away wins which haven’t been our forte in previous seasons. But i can’t help but think that the only points we’ve dropped in this 10 game run have been against the 2 notably high rep teams we’ve played against (Sp*rs and Everton). Indeed, I think it shows the lack of depth that we can’t unpick the better teams defences.
Still, get a few players in the summer and with no-one of note leaving we should be taking a step forward without taking any backwards.
Definitely, the Spurs game was 2 horrendous lapses in concentration and despite Everton having most of the play they didn’t seem to threaten to much either. Its definitely the other end which needs a bit of work going by recent games.

Bang on, we’ve been guilty of not being able to ” grind out a victory “, and while its nice to watch, there are no extra points for pretty football.
A note on points. We are 18pts adrift from Utd 21 if they win tonight. Considering we have dropped a total of 17 points at home (4 draws 3 losses) and 22 points away (5 draws and 4 losses). If we half that total loss of points we would have been about 1 point ahead of them going into tonight’s fixture. For me, it is highly realistic for us to at least halve the amounts of points we have conceded, especially considering how we have drawn and lost some of those games and that is without minimal recruitment. If we had won every game up until now then we would already be 17 points better off and leaves a deficit of 5 points which would have been enough to be top this season.

I will say it is a positive that we are winning games now that we wouldn’t have won earlier in the season, regardless of who our competition is. But I agree with you we need reinforcements in the summer. Rather than dwell on who exactly per se, where do you think we need the bolstering? We definitely need another body upfront, though for the moment no one has scored more goals at home than ourselves and we are third top scorers away from home so goals are not seemingly the problem but rather winning games. In regards to Jenkinson if Sagna stays then Jenkinson will play more out of the two. If he leaves then I suspect/expect a right back in a similar mould to Monreal so we have that same dynamic competition at Right Back. The objectives should be simple: Keep this group of players together and strategically strengthen. Ironically the first might be more important. I think back to the first two matches of the season and watching Cazorla and Podolski trying to use the same channels and repeatedly getting in each other’s way. Exactly, United’s one-nil win over Reading on a dreary Saturday a month or so ago was the most dreadful, boring, soul-crushing 90 minutes of football I’ve ever seen.
Even the commentators were apologetic about the past two hours of television programming we were forced to collectively endure. But there was just a matter-of-fact acceptance of that’s how champions become champions.

Agreed with everything that Rambo and Arsene have to say – I’m really happy to see the grit of this team to grind out these gnarly 1-0 wins, United is good at it and look where they are (but still, fuck the dutch cunt though, seriously). Ramsey was, is a good player after the horrifying tackle it’s understable he took abit of time to realise his old self and now we’re seeing the he can be world class and has everything in his locker to be just that. Hardworking, determined, committed to the game.
