Wenger to wait on Giroud appeal

Arsene Wenger says he was not surprised Olivier Giroud was shown a red card against Fulham today, but says he’ll wait to see the incident again before deciding whether or not to appeal.

The striker was sent off in the 90th minute for a challenge on some Fulham bloke which saw him get the ball first and then a chunk of the man, and after Sidwell had been shown a red for his tackle on Arteta in the first half the dismissal was inevitable.

Asked if he would appeal the automatic three match ban, the boss said, “I have to see it again. I haven’t seen it on television.

“I spoke with Giroud. He said to me that he slipped at the moment he went for the ball and it’s confirmed by the television.

“I haven’t seen it but he’s not a tackler. He went over the ball and knowing that Sidwell had been sent off before, I had no illusion of the colour of the card.”

If upheld, Giroud will miss the games against Manchester United, QPR and Wigan. Arsenal’s performance was lethargic, something Wenger acknowledged.

“I put it down to psychological reasons and to the fact that we didn’t want to be stupid. You are a bit under pressure when you play 11 against 10 because you think that with every foul you risk a second yellow card so they do not go in the challenges.

“The crowd is behind their team. it becomes a different problem. In the end, we have a fantastic spirit and that got us through.

“We are on a strong run and we just go into the next game and focus on winning that. The next game will be Man United so it’s a good challenge for us.”

To be honest, it’s not necessarily a bad thing Giroud is suspended, at least we could possibly give Podolski a run in the middle. It’s not like Giroud was impossible to replace, even if we don’t SEEM to have strikers in the squad. Podolski and Walcott are both strikers in reality, and none of them could do worse than Giroud with his constant moaning and lack of movement. Both Walcott and Podolski could have got 11 goals in 30 starts up front.

Jim Jimminy

But giroud is essentially out target man, someone the others players can us as a, you know, target. So his movement is somewhat restricted. He has to be in the same area. The other players could do more to get closer to him. Perhaps today they were worried about the risk of a counter attack.

Anyway 3 pts it is. On to the next one – bound to be much easier.

ckmma

I kind of agree, but im not sure what our best line up would be against Manu next week without HFB, Podolski, Gervinho and Ox havn’t started any matches recently so its going to be very experimental. I get the slight feeling it could be Gervinho starting as striker just to confuse the Manu defence. I think as long as Rosicky is not injured and all our forwards are hungry for goals, theres no reason we can’t beat Manu. I think the biggest shame is we don’t have Frimpong to take out the return of the cunt.

Dreamiest

I think both Koscielny and Rosicky kicked the hell out of their Micheal Jackson the last time they visited the Emirates. Now they should do the same to the Mercenary cunt.

Kolololo

Gervinho as a strike would confuse Arsenal to begin with.

Kolololo

*striker

Belfast Gunner

I don’t have a lot to add, everyone has their own opinion on him as a striker, but I think we will massively miss him when defending set pieces. I remember many corners this season not making it past our HFB.

AussieGooner

Manu score the most headed goals in the league, Giroud would have been very useful in defence.

Leon

Gervais to spearhead our attack vs UTD, Poldi on the left.

Lec

Yes im up for this. Provided he leaves out the abit of indecisiveness when the net is begging to be shaken and the keeper is admiring artetas hair somewhere not btwn the goal posts!

pauly bear

If kompanys red got overturned then giroud should be grand

Jim Jimminy

If only Giroud didn’t play for Arsenal…

Jim Jimminy

…And by that i mean cos no one likes arsenal, so the red wont be overturned.

Runcorn Gooner

It deffo won’t be overturned particularly as Sidwell was sent off for a similar(but nastier tackle).
Time for Poldi to walk the walk, which I am sure he is capable of

G-G-G-GOOONERRR

Poldi Upfront vs ManU…He is quite good in air, has venomous left foot(lot better than van pussy), has good physical presence…also has been featured on Fifa Cover(with Ronaldinho).

vnet

what does having been featured on the fifa cover have to do anything with his form or his potential performance against man united next week?
I would like to point out that its not a fifa13 tournament that’s being held next week.

G-G-G-GOOONERRR

i can understand ur frustration aftr such a victory…fifa covr part was just a jk

Lec

He made esquire too, he must have some real style on the pitch aswell. That poldi.

Voldermort

Most people walking out the stadium was of the opinion that his sending off may have done us a favour, he’s decent enough player and as a first season has done ok but the whole of our attacking today was terrible.
3 points is 3 points and all that but that can’t disguise how poor we were today and we desperately need a quality striker that has more mobility about them than giroud.

Too Drunk To Walk

I to be honest think the Red Card will be turned over. I think it was on watching the replays that he got the ball and in fact he was trying to pull the ball back, away from the incoming player. There was no intention and he was unfortunate to catch the player.

I think to not appeal when there is clearly room for appeal and just sit back and lose him for three matches makes no sense.

I am sure an appeal will be made.

kenneth

its ok if an appeal is made and the red card is over turned. even if he is available for the man u game, i think he should sit on the bench, he needs rest

maguere

I do not like him, let him go for life. He has no impact in the field. I was so happy when I saw a red card awarded to him. Poldosky will do better and gervinho. Ban him for good, he is just but not a striker in Arsenal

Arsene Wenger

I thought name-calling was not allowed.

Parisian Weetabix

These are special circumstances.

Lec

That is not fair! (you probably dont care about this either) 🙁

Dan

You my friend are an idiot.

Jim Jimminy

Poldosky? Nice try.

Arteta's Hair Gel

What’re you, a Sp*rs supporter or something? Keep your damned opinions to yourself.

Nicolae

@Maguere: I presume you don’t like him winning balls in the air doing lay outs and helping building chances and oh yeah scoring a decent amount of goals in his first season.

But of course you didn’t jump out and screamed goaaaal when he scored and I presume Ramsey was in you target when he was out of form.Shoukd we talk Gervinho

Don’t worry there is always a nice striker in Adebayor to get your hopes up!Oh do you support Arsenal?Really?!

more Cazorlas less Girouds

I haven’t seen it on television. It’s confirmed by television. Repeat ad infinitum

Serotonin

He [Giroud] said… it’s confirmed by the television.
Repeat ad infinitum.

Lec

Wenger: ” I will have a look at it but I fear i may question the decision and get banned for 3 matches seeing as I’m not a fat scott with a red nose”

Lincoh

i will enjoy missing Giroud

gunnerman

You have probably missed the whole season and his contribution to the campaign.

Chase

All the Giroud haters were the Per, Kos, Walcott, Ramsey, etc haters and now their biggest fans. Very fickle. Who’s next?

Harsh

giroud is a great player for us……. he defends during opposition set pieces………. drops back in midfield during goalcicks to win the ball and initiate the attack……….. he regularly creates chances……. not to mention his mid-blowing touch, amazing short passing, intelligent layoffs, teamwork and a completelly arsenal style of play……… with all these qualities of giroud and the attacking style of paly that arsenal adopt in which we have wingers coming in from either sides, midfielder going forward to attack and even full-backs coming forward……… he is almost like a playmaker in the attacking third…. you know, more of a… Read more »

Entre Dans La

I dont think he is having the best season of his life but I can say that Giroud has at least earned his paycheck this season.

Dont know if I can say that about Walcott…. especially in the aftermath of him acting like a total cunt with his contract

Mate Kiddleton

Giroud peeling away from his marker and smashing a shot against the far post – this is what I want to see more of from the big man.

Too Drunk To Walk

Well maybe less of the smashing it against THE POST part

Billsito

U can say whatever but we’ll definitely miss Giroud… In our beloved but limited squad we Don’t have someone else like him…

davonewzealand

Worlds best striker Bendtner is similar to Giroud.

Gibbs' Ears

Isn’t Podolski injured and awaiting surgery in the summer, hence why he hasn’t started in ages? Why are there obnoxious comments about Podolski v Giroud? Not enjoying this trend of setting players against each other.

Goon

The next three games are crucial. We lose any of them, then we won’t make the top four (I’d like a win against man utd). There was no intent, he went to protect the ball, not two footed, he didn’t lunge in. A yellow card, for me.

WerZ

Think there is an allowance there that if we loose to United we can still get top 4 if we win the other 3 since Chelsea and Spurs have to play each other.

gunnerman

We should win all four and let the others do what they have to do. Man U may be the champions this year but they surely aren’t the INVINCIBLES!
