Arsenal’s 12 game win streak, Wenger’s 17 years, and Swansea: By the Numbers

Arsenal’s Incredible Away Run

– Arsenal tied their record of 8 away wins in League play today (2001-2002: Leicester, Blackburn, Everton, Newcastle, Villa, Charlton, Notlob, Man U; 2013-2014: Swansea, West Brom, Fulham, QPR, Newcastle, Villa, Fulham, Sunderland, Swansea.)
12 – Arsenal have actually won 12 away games in a row if you count all competitions, this is the longest Arsenal away win streak that I can find (Bayern, Swansea, West Brom, Fulham, QPR, Newcastle, Fener, Fulham, Sunderland, Marseille, West Brom, Swansea.)**
23 – Arsenal have scored 23 goals in those 12 games
142 – Arsenal have taken 142 shots in those 12 games
12 – That’s an average of 12 shots per game for Arsenal
16 – That’s also an average conversion (goals/shots) of 16% for Arsenal
6 – Arsenal have allowed just 6 goals in those 12 games
172 – Arsenal allowed 172 shots in those 12 games
14 – That’s an Average of 14 shots allowed per game for Arsenal in those games
– Three of those goals in those away games have been penalties (West Brom, Sunderland, Marseille)
2 – That means the opposition are converting just TWO percent of their shots from open play against Arsenal in away games

For some context…
13 – In the last three seasons of League play, Arsenal have converted about 13% of their shots into goals
18 – In their most efficient offensive season (since 2000), Arsenal scored 18% of their shots (season 2004-2005)
18 – This season Arsenal are scoring about 18% of their shots
– Arsenal are the only team to score in all six of their Premier League matches this season.
– In their best defensive season (2003-2004), Arsenal allowed the opposition to score about 8% of their shots
11 – This season Arsenal are allowing the opposition to score about 11% of their shots
8 – Since the Villa game, Arsenal have only allowed Premier League opposition to score on 8% of their shots

Sone stats on Wenger’s 17 years

17 – Years ago today, Arsene Wenger was appointed manager of the Arsenal
644 – League matches Wenger has managed for the Arsenal (these are all League stats below)
373 – Wins Arsenal have managed under Arsene Wenger
160 –  Draws
1279 – Points earned
22 – Percent of Arsenal’s all-time League points earned by Wenger*
15 – Percent of Arsenal’s all-time League games Wenger has managed
1219 – Goals scored by Arsenal under Wenger
606 – Goals allowed under Wenger
613 – Goal difference (positive) for Wenger
34 – Percent of Arsenal’s all-time League goal difference earned under Wenger
75 – €millions (estimate) Arsene Wenger has spent (net) on transfers in 17 years
880 – €millions (estimate) Chelsea have spent (net) on transfers in that same time
640 – €millions (estimate) Man City have spent (net) on transfers since Arsenal opened the Emirates Stadium
+18 – €millions (estimate) Arsenal have earned (net) on transfers since opening the Emirates Stadium

Swansea 1-2 Arsenal

5 – Shots on goal in Gnabry’s Arsenal career (all competitions)
2 – Shots on goal by Gnabry v. Swansea
1 – Career Arsenal goals by Gnabry (Swansea, 28 Sept 2013)
1 – Career Arsenal goals by Nacho Monreal (Swansea, 16 Mar 2013)
3 – Corners taken by Serge Gnabry v. Swansea (completed 0)
1 – Key pass by Gnabry v. Swansea (open play)
29 – Passes by Gnabry (of 32 attempts)
– Crosses completed by Gnabry
1 – Winks by Szczesny
8 – Confident, well taken, chin jutting forward, high claims by szczesny
2 – Shots by Ramsey
1 – Tackle by Wilshere which won the ball back for Giroud to pass so that Ramsey could shoot, but which wasn’t counted as a tackle
1 – Dribble by Ramsey in the Swansea box to get around his defender
1 – Shot on target by Ramsey
1 – Goal by Ramsey, but did they count it as a goal or as something entirely different, was it not counted at all, what is going on with the stats???
3 – Shots by Bony, from the low post, with the drop-step, fade away, airball¹
– Back pass by Gibbs to Bony who probably, ok actually, should have done better but instead shot the ball straight at Szczesny for the easy save
69 – Passes by Ramsey²
3 – Key passes by Ramsey¹
1 – Passes by Ramsey that should have been Özil’s first goal
7 – Fucking tackles by Ramsey, for the second fucking game in a fucking row, what the fuck is going on with this fucking kid???¹
7 – Ball recoveries by Ramsey
1 – Ball recovery off a loose pass that led to the perfectly slotted ball for Gnabry to score his first ever Arsenal goal, but it wasn’t counted as a ball recovery
1 – Dutch Skunk bemoaning his transfer to Man U and the fact that he has to play for Moyes
3 – Villa goals scored against Man City
1 – Jose Mourinho, the Special Once, blathering on about “foreigners diving in the Premier League” after his team barely eeked a draw today against Tottenham
2 – and Arsenal are 2 points clear at the top of the table, baby!

I don’t know what’s going on with the match stats tonight. Anyway, here’s Ramsey’s numbers from last year compared to this. Enjoy. I don’t know about you but with this perfect run of results I’m going on an overnight drunk.

Ramsey-last-this

¹Led all players in this game

²Led just his team this game

³Leads the League

*Arsenal have played 4340 games and earned 5693 points; Wenger has managed 644 games and earned 1786 1279 points
**FIFA does not count penalty wins, so according to FIFA rules there is no streak. Of course FIFA also awards Qatar a world cup and generally is a nuisance on world football, so I feel comfortable calling a penalty shootout win a win. I mean, if Qatar win the world cup on penalty shootouts do they not WIN the world cup? Fucktards?

A quick comment on Michael Owens article this is not my comment but i saw it on a article and i think its spot on. “How do so many ex Liverpool players get jobs as pundits? This article is just biased drivel. Arsenal have just broken the Premier League away wins record, have the best record of any club in the league for 2013, beat the Spurs team Owen praises (before signing Ozil). Now rated ahead of Man U by the books, not for the top 4 but for the title, and almost on a par with Chelsea and Man… Read more »

heh

I think Owens pretty bad at punditry….given his vast experience after tirelesly watching games from the bench on his last 5 years to retirement. I expected much better!!

jason

THis subject has been covered hes played for big clubs and has the experience but all that means nothing when your a idiot with a annoying voice.

thw14

3 – Backheels in lead up to second goal.

The boys haven’t lost the handbrake, they just learnt how to drive.

Rufusstan

Saying Owens is a bit bad at punditry is akin to saying hacking your own leg off might sting a bit.

The guy is usually an empty shirt, and the first time he actually presented his own opinion, he proved exactly why he shouldn’t ever do it again.

Sorry, not usually this vitriolic, but its just the same old recycled shit that everyone else says because they think it gets hits, and stops them actually having to think.

goonerforlife

i dont care whatever somebody says..I am happy as long as our team grabs 3 fuking points.

Ashley

Carragher had a pretty awesome article on DailyMail (I know) where he argued that everyone should be an Arsenal fan this season. Worth checking out.

DL Gooner

Think this is the year!.The build up on both the Swansea goals was liquid.

Parisian Weetabix

The dodgy pass back was by Jack. Gibbo was quietly flawless today.

Witoldo

True dat.

And I’m 99% sure that the West Brom League Cup goes down as a draw, thus ending our streak of consecutive away wins at 10. We’re starting over again at 1 after yesterday.

WingardiumIdiota

Oh come on, that counts as a win. The criteria for winning in a knockout game is just a bit different to that of a league game. I mean, we beat the opposition didn’t we? Therefore a win.

Nognir

Winners progress to the next round in a league cup. We progressed to the next round. Therefore we won. QED.

masterofthegoonaverse

Bollocks!

NaijaRambo

TDs for Witoldo are unfair. Yes we supporters all treat West Brom as a win, but official stats do not, including our own club’s official stats. He is just pointing out that inconvenient fact, in case anyone later on checks the records and finds themselves surprised. But who gave a toss about stats when our boys are showing such consistent character? There’s no number for that!

Witoldo

Yes, as this is an article about numbers and stats (and 7am generally does a marvellous job), I felt it necessary to point out how stats work officially with penalty shootout wins. Don’t kill the messenger–I don’t make the rules!

For our purposes as fans, let it be 12 straight wins (and may it be 25 by the time we’re done!), but the record books will say otherwise.

DLDC

Speaking of streaks (sorta) can anyone with better resources and less lazy than I, provide Arsenal’s record since the Bayern away match? Because in retrospect, that seems to be a point where things really turned around

Witoldo

Check arsenal.com, “Results,” and you’ll see a nice table.

17 wins, 3 draws (including the penalty shootout against West Brom), 1 loss.

There’s a reason why Arsene said the Aston Villa result was a fluke, and the fans who were panicking were probably a bit hasty to do so.

Although, personally, I’m waiting to see how Arsenal play against the other top-4 teams. In recent seasons, this has been a problem for us.

Yezbo

Quietly flawless is how I’d describe our Gibbo in general this season.

I’m disturbingly happy over how well our young British Core is developing. Wenger is well and truly building something special at the Emirates – and I think this will be his parting gift to Arsenal Football Club.

Imagine when they all peak together in 4-5 years time. We’ll have Wenger on the sidelines with a quiet grin on his face.

Bonjour

Ever since the 2011 Carling Cup final and the aftermath, let’s be frank, we have been dismal. Many players didn’t have the patience or the motivation to fight through this period of transition, and departed. I think it’s no surprise that the young British core that you mention, and the fullbacks that Raph37 mentions below, are the ones performing so well, as they’ve been the ones who stuck with The Arsenal during this tough period. They’ve finally gained the “mental strength” that Wenger keeps going on about. They’ve learnt the hard way how to carry a team when some of… Read more »

Raph37

Abolutely bang on. We can talk about Ramsey, Ozil, etc, players giving the team confidence and putting the goals in, but actually when we play it’s at the back, and in particular the full backs that are the bedrock of the team. Gibbs is pure quality. I think you’ll find that if you look at the stats when we do have him as opposed to when he was injured, we have a much higher goal and win rate. He saved us against Marseille, yestoday he put in a great last ditch tackle to deal with Dyer, and his overall game… Read more »

neutral

Correct, Gibbs was just the intended recipient, eventual victim of that terrible pass.

Graham

It wasn’t it was by Gibbs, just that Jack didn’t read it and walked away.

Topofthe eh?

1 – Arsene Wenger.

7Billion – David Moyes. coz u know….. anyone in the universe can manage a cock screw up like the one he’s having…….not that Im complaining.

VCC

Some nice stats, especially about Wenger’s 17 years.

Fairly sure it was Wilshere, not Gibbs, who played the poor pass to allow the Bony shot though.

Mooro

8 – goals now by Aaron Ramsey

8-ers of Aaron Ramsey these days – 0

Nognir

Aaron Ramsey, who crawled through a river of shit and came clean on the other side (Read that in Morgan Freeman’s voice)

Arsene McCloud of the clan McCloud

Boat drinks!

Tonydouble71

Smug as he’ll tonight having seen us go 2 clear at the top following the best possible results for all those below us.
Ramsey a different class this season and to be honest best player so far in premiership.
As a believer in Wenger I’m thrilled to see us top.17 years that has made Arsenal one of the most stylish and classy clubs in the world.Gnarby a typical example of what Wenger creates and another gem tincture making.

eddymc2

“b” before “r”.

Rad Carrot

8 – points salford is below us.

0 – fucks any of us give about the fate of the dutch skunk now.

C

I would so love to see him fade away into irrelevance with a mediocre Man Utd side…

No, it’s not that dire for them (yet), but a kid can have dreams.

Thuthan

Hoping against hope that he gets relegated as part of the famous Manchester United “Incapables”. He might even get awarded a wooden trophy. He’ll like that. He went there to win trophies.

Diarmuid Kelly

Did anyone else cast a wry smile when he was injured during the week, and then doubtful today. Maybe his two good years are behind him.

Brian Mendoza

So I just had this thought, how would you feel if we somehow (long shot I know) managed to go the season unbeaten and won the title, but would be denied an Invincibles 2.0 by Anthony Fucking Taylor?

That would be the most mixed feeling of all time.

Still, onwards and upwards! Long may this streak continue. *knock on wood*

Ricky D

Arsenal top of the league – priceless

SDDutchGooner

Curious why Ramsey was not credited with an assist for the first goal. Can anyone shed light?

7amkickoff

He was

Jb

The little boy inside me hopes the Dutch skunk is regretting not having a chance to captain a side he owes everything he has too and winning with them

Like United would ever give him a statue and that would mean more to me than some fucking medal with a bunch of cunts

Singapore Girl

The fact that Ramsey had a bust up with RvP makes me love Rambo more. Is that wrong? I just hate RvP so much. Definition of Judas. The way he publicly attacked the club and Arsene I will never forget.

Thuthan

I don’t hold with calling him a Judas. makes us sound like petulant spuds. We’re better than them, aren’t we?

He’s a cunt.

MoNk

Some mistakes in these!

8 – 2013-2014: Swansea, West Brom, Fulham, QPR, Newcastle, Villa, Fulham, Sunderland, Swansea
Villa was a home game and we lost right?

And the all competitions record ended when we drew 1-1 at FT vs WBA. Only 90 miins stats are counted for any streaks.

And the back-pass was from Wilshere, not Gibbs!

Geezer

They are premier league stats, for away games. So WBA in COC doesn’t count. We lost the home game against Villa, but won the away game. Away streak in Premier League still intact.

I hate streaks. Unnecessary pressure. COYG.

I really love the fact that even when Spurs are in 2nd place, we’re fucking 1st. FOREVER IN OUR SHADOW.

Aussie gooner

Lets not forget our 2nd team, cazola, verm, podoski, Arteta, chamber, Walcott, rosiky, winning ugly at the moment, but this squad will never give up, and Giroud work rate for the team has him up their with Rambo every game as MOM

santori

I think better yet to come. This team will only start to gel further as the players continue to grow in understanding with each other. The facile argument that Spurs will get better when they bed in more playing time together seems to farcically dismiss the fact that we will also improve in our understanding from here on. Particularly as Podolski and Santi have yet to play with Ozil and he will only get better with time as he settles into the pace of the league. Add to that the exciting prospect of our youth in Gnabry, Zelalem which has… Read more »

WingardiumIdiota

Yeah me too. I think that with a second playmaker (Cazorla/Rosicky) and a designated runner behind the defence (Theo/Poldi), we will score roughly 10 times as many goals.

Good Omens

20 – 1 versus Swansea would have been interesting for sure.

Thuthan

The nice thing is that Podolski and Mertesacker have played a few times with Ozil for Germany, so when Podolski comes back the understanding with Ozil shouldn’t take too long to form.

journeyman

Giroud was fucking mental in the final minutes…did a bang up defensive job while ozil and ramsey pushed up I was hoping for another goal on the counter. But i remember not being able to see any attacking players on the field. Then i saw Ramsey run on to a ball boshed out of the defense by Giroud… The work rate of those two is immense…unparalleled by anyone in the league right now honestly i’d rather have a team of committed footballers like wilshere, rambo, giroud and sagna compared to those overpaid wanks over at chelsea Ooh to be a… Read more »

Arsenal-induced Heart Attack Survivor

We’re really idiots for consciously opting not to gloat. Were United in this place, we’d never hear the end of it.

But then again, we have a thing called ‘class’, so maybe a pragmatic approach is the order of the day.

santori

Class. Still early days too but what a good start and every point counts in the end. I expect we will have a good inkling as to who are going to challenge for the title come game 10 to game 12. Granted we have players to come back who will make a difference in Santi, Podolski, Walcott, Chamberlain, even Diaby. Bendtner may also tip the balance for us at least as cover till January. The squad is in good shape. This is not a mad cap coincidence. Wenger has reshaped the team since the trolley dash when he abandoned his… Read more »

bard

It bears repeating that his experiment with youth was neither a failure, nor an experiment.

henry

We need a second Wenger when he retires. Lets start the job now because it is very hard to do that.

thw14

Yes, of course, we always look for good Wengers, you would not believe if I tell you how many Wengers call everyday to beg for possession of the ‘war-chest’, but we are a top, top, top, top , top quality club with strong ideas of how classy we want our Wengers and we are willing to wait for a top, top, top, top, top, top, top quality one.

santori

Likely he’ll sign for another 3 to 5 seasons to 68.

In that time,w e will keep tabs on managers who display similar ethos like Laudrup, Deschamp, Blanc, Klopp.

But he will likely be around for a while yet given the stability he represents which has been a great platform for us this season to kick off from.

Even in our poorest seasons, we’ve finished in CL and (ahem) ahead of the Great Pretenders.

Ruud Van Horseface

Klopp or Laudrup are the ones on my wishlist when the time comes.

Geezer

Seeing Hodgson at Pool, and now Moyes at United, I have my reservations about Laudrup at Arsenal (after Arsene decides to call it a day of course, which should be after another 100 years hopefully). Klopp sounds like a better option. Or maybe we should go for some other less-known french manager (like most of our signings). After all, it was “Arsene Who”, 17 years ago.

WingardiumIdiota

Conte, Simeone or Klopp for me. But hopefully we won’t really need to worry about that for another 5+ years, and there’ll be a new batch of talented/successful young managers to pick from by then.

Ilari

After Wenger retires, which is not hopefully for another (say) five years, I vote for Klopp, too. He can do this if we face another Anthony Taylorish ref: http://www.101greatgoals.com/blog/borussia-dortmund-manager-jurgen-klopps-epic-wolverine-like-reaction-to-higuain-goal-sent-to-the-stands-for-protesting/

HT

Don’t forget Frank de Boer at Ajax. I really don’t see Klopp heading to Arsenal. De Boer has won three titles on the trot in a very competitive league, all that with having to deal with losing their best players year after year (Suarez, Vertonghen, Eriksen..) I think de Boer could well prove to have the goods. He’s VERY young too, so will still be a likely target by the time Wenger retires.

AP

Deschamps!!!!!!! really???

It Is What It Is

Let Arsene choose. He knows what we need.

Arsene McCloud of the clan McCloud

I’d add Martinez to the list.

lordgunner

deschamps suck , take away where he coach Monaco to champions league final (he couldnt even win the league with that team) he isnt that good

if moyes continue this way (hopefully) i see klopp ending at manure

as french coach Garcia if he prove himself at Roma ( they have done a great start 6 victory 18 goal 3 by gervinho) after been successful at Lille would be a good call
i would love the ticket deBoer/god

Thuthan

Yes, let Arsene choose, but also let the new man (or woman) come in as his understudy/deputy for a year, bringing with him any coaches he wants to bring as additions to those we have now, not immediate replacements. Hopefully Arsene and Arsenal are learning what a disaster swapping the entire managerial and coaching teams can be for even the best (but flawed) clubs.

mike

I assume we will be hiring Berkamp when Arsene retires, hopefully Berkamp will be allowed to shaddow Arsene for a season to pick up a little extra experience

DatArse

And henry should be our striker coach!

Black Hei

Kind of hard since Bergkamp can’t fly.

masterofthegoonaverse

I think we could get around that, possibly one European game a year that couldn’t be driven too and would have to send a reserve on tour!

Yes Arsenal fans have been through much more ups and downs than most other clubs over the last 7 to 8 years, I think we are just humble to be where we are now and happy to have been here to watch this current squad grow as a team over the past few years, they have come on leaps and bounds and i know them last few years fighting for 4th place and champions league football has been the team stronger and the same could be said for the fans. The difference with Ramsey this season (carried on from end of last) is he has been more robust. His passing percentage is still the same and that has always been his strong suit. But he used to get bundled off the ball a lot and showed no recovery speed. Like Walcott two seasons ago, Ramsey has finally developed some aggression. he’s also used it more efficiently with his positioning (something I supposed may have been influenced by playing alongside Arteta) One of his latent strengths in seasons past was his shooting. Her wasn’t afraid to have a crack. But he… Read more »

I completely agree. And honestly I think that speaks loads of Aaron’s character – he was riding pretty high at the end of last season, but rather than rest on that it seems fairly obvious to me that he busted his ass during off season to get his finishing back, to work on his upper body strength and improve his all round game. Well, between his safari to Kenya with his fiance and Walcott’s Vegas stag do, of course 😉 But jokes aside, so much respect has to go to the man. He’s worked so hard to get back on… Read more »

Certainly not the stuff they are smoking at Liverpool. That’s called delusion of grandeur.

Odi

I just hope Wenger doesn’t alter the team, just minimal chances. Won’t like seeing the defence chanced to accommodate TV5, Flamini shouldn’t be dropped for Arterta. I like Gnarbry’s heart kid is brave. Finally I believe arsenal is the team to beat, I can’t find a better team in the EPL

santori

I think as Blogs mentioned, choice between Arteta and Flaminni will be dictated by opposition and need for rotation. A good conundrum to have. With regard Gnabry, mentioned that he has a creative spark and ability to drive forward with pace that is critical to us at the moment sans Walcott. Where Ryo tends to be too predictable, Gnabry can stretch the opponents with his drive and creativity. He needs a bit of experience which he seems to be gaining fast in terms of knowing when to hold and when to indulge in solo work. But I think he is… Read more »

Interestingly enjoyable stuff my good man, if a tad erroneous! 1) WBA – although I am happy to ignore this when lauding our form to others, goes down as an away draw as penalties mean victory not as far as the record keepers are concerned 2) Villa – you have them down as an away win this season when in fact it was a home defeat. 3) Jacko was responsible for the back pass in question. Also how do you determine AW percent of goal difference? I don’t understand how that one works? Anyway I come in peace and thoroughly… Read more »

Just for the record (no pun intended), I’ve seen a lot of Gooners talking about our “record number of EPL away wins”. To put everyone straight, I believe our current run of eight EPL away victories ties with our previous best of 2001-2, but the record for consecutive away wins in the Premier League is 11, set by Chelsea in 2008 (according to the BBC).

Steve

Would the Dutch skunk even make the squad if the git was back with us? I’m asking this as a serious question btw!

Don’t be ridiculous…RVP make the squad easily. I mean it’s not like Sanogo and TGSTEL are any better. I think arsenal fans should get over Van Persie IMO

Hopefully, we will not have a zero for the number of silverware won this season
I’m very optimistic this year will be different

The back pass that led to the Bony shot on goal was made by Wilshere, not Gibbs. Study up. Know your Match.

18 – years Arsenal have finished above the scum in the league
20 – years since the scum have beaten AFC by more than one goal in the league
94 – years of top-flight football for AFC
35 – years of top-flight football for the scum
1 – team in London

A handful more:

1,537 – Arsenal all-time PL point tally
76 – per cent of the above achieved by the scum; the minute they usually bottle it; similarly about that percentage through the season.
669 – Arsenal all-time PL goal difference
76 – the scum all-time PL goal difference (genuinely)

Clock End Mike

When you say that 22% of Arsenal’s all-time League points have been earned by Wenger, and “Arsenal have played 4340 games and earned 5693 points”, you have to remember that, prior to 1981, only 2 points were awarded for a win. So you’re not really comparing like with like when you compare Wenger’s points earned with those earned up to 1981.

Good stats, though, all the same! In fact, incredible stats. Sometimes it’s heard to realise just what a historic era we’re living through in terms of the 125-year history of the club.
