Wenger cautious as Wilshere plays down knock

Jack Wilshere is hoping to be fit for Saturday’s match at Crystal Palace despite sustaining a knock to his troublesome ankle although manager Arsene Wenger says the England midfielder will be assessed over the next couple of days.

The England international was replaced by Santi Cazorla just before the hour mark having struggled to get his passing game going – he had only a 65% pass completion rate according to @Orbinho – following lengthy medical treatment in the first half.

Talking about the problem after the game, Wilshere stressed it wasn’t a major problem.

“It was one of those things. I jarred my ankle and I’ve done it before. I know, five or 10 minutes, I could run it off.

“If you’re a footballer you want to be in the big games.”

Aware that Wilshere’s youthful exuberance often blinds the 21-year-old to the dangers of playing injured, Wenger gave a more sober assessment of the situation.

“You could see he was not completely himself and that’s why I decided to take him off.

“At the moment it is his desire to play that gets him through the game,” Wenger said.

“We will see how he responds in the next two or three days, we have to wait for the medical assessment.”

Naturally, having lost Jack for the best part of two seasons over the course of the last three years it’s obvious that he needs to be treated carefully. For all his talent and drive, we’ve enough options in midfield to be cautious as and when he dips into the dreaded ‘red zone’.

Arseblog News wouldn’t be surprised if he’s wrapped in cotton wool for Saturday given we’ve a whole host of big games on the horizon.

Obv. Needs a rest against palace. Bring in cazorla or gnabry. Get well soon son!

MAllen

Flashes of brilliance from Jack every now and then over the last few games. Can’t wait until he hits his full potential. Good for Arsenal, good for England.

Ozinal

Wilshere appeared to be trying too hard to impress at the moment, perhaps feeling the weight to living up the hype and establishing himself in a sea of our midfield talents. Reminds me of Ramsey prior to his resurgence this season. Jack just needs to keep things simple and focus on doing the basics right in a consistent manner first. Like our run, Ramsey is perhaps due a slight dip in his performance and wouldn’t read too much in his output or lack of it last evening. He just need to keep his feet on the ground and maintain his… Read more »

I fear he exposes himself to reckless challenges abit too often and seeing as “player protection” went out of the window he perhaps should be doing that alil less often……

Naija Gunner

Couldn’t agree less. He just have to protect himself on the field of play especial against the orcs and leg breakers of the premiership.

UnusualArse

Law of averages caught up with Ramsey… Since that’s settled, expect a Rambo show against Palace…

Heroldgoon

He actually had 50% pass completion. could this have been brought about by going for the spectacular (and not succeding) when a simple pass could have been on?

Mooro

No reason to risk him on Saturday. Give the boy a rest.

goonies

Does he stay down that long on the ground to gain sympathy? like yesterday i expected him to be replaced right away seeing the agony and pain he was going through………he needs to mature tbh.

Mark Hughes

Was yesterday the first time you’d watch a game of football?

Johnnnycakes

In fairness if I was playing that bad I’d want to be off too!

milesfromnowhere

He goes to ground with apparent agony in most games these days you could make a drinking game of it!

Özil Gummidge

I imagine both Wilshere and Ramsey will be rested. Cazorla to start.

BillyBatts

Arteta – Rosicky – Flamini midfield should be enough for Palace. Ozil and Ramsey as bench options.

goonprof

I hope jack hasn’t got gazza-brain.if you are injured, admit it and come off.he was poor because the ankle is vital to movement and passing.he hasn’t been the brightest lately.he needs a month off.

Mark Hughes

A few more performances like that and I’ll take him off your hands. I’ll let Charlie take him under his wing and show him how to go from good to mediocre to plain awful within a season.

Sharpehunter

Both Jack and Ramsey could with a rest in all fairness. The only problem is that they will be terrified of losing their place in the squad. A nice problem to have in many ways.

Santi will cement a starting birth for sure and when Theo and Polds come back the fight for a berth will really hot up.

Good for the team healthy competition for all places.

prof. senderos

smokin’ jack..!!

Heroldgoon

i’ll tell you who badly needs a game VERMINATOR!!!!!! to replace either of Mert or Koscienly.

Finsbury Park Gooner

I liked this because I do miss the Verminator, but there’s just no way you can drop either of the other CB’s at the moment, unless it’s for a rest.

Luke

Ramsey looked completely gassed out before he was subbed off. If it weren’t for his confidence and goalscoring form, I’d be tempted to bench him alongside Jack and use the others against Palace.

james dill

Wilshere is class he has just hit a blip in his game at the moment he cant be played against when he is playing at his best!

Blair

Funny I wish people gave Ramsey the same benefit of doubt. Don’t get me wrong, I love Wilshere I just find it very irritating how people trip over themselves in trying to defend and support Jack (the English factor perhaps!?), when the same people left Aaron well and truly hung out to dry last season. I call bullshit on this one.

gunnerDZ

Every game flamini has played in this season has resulted in a win(except one draw away to west bromwich).Hope he recovers well for the rest of the month and November.

Cocky Fella

Jenkinson Mertasacker Vermalen Monreal
Arteta Flamini
Gnabry Cazorla Rosicky
Bendtner

Still a decent squad to do the job against a Palace without a lift… Unless they sign Pulis tomorrow, then I’ll be scared.

Taapopi Ainima

Jack Wilshere when he plays bad, is still better than most midfielders in the Champions League. His work ethic is top notch and to come here at Arseblog and criticise him because of one decision he made is bollocks. He’s scored twice in 3 games so far and for me that is fantastic for a someone playing out of position

Blair

Are you kidding me? He’s an absolute talent this is absolutely true but you’ve got to be able to recognize a bad game when you see one. “When he plays bad is still one of the better midfielders in the CL” so…a 65% pass completion rate is amongst the best out in the CL?? Get outta here. Listen, we’ve got to be able to realize when one of our own puts in a subpar performance and no one was more guilty of that than Wilshere against Dortmund. He will learn and improve from it no doubt but please call a… Read more »
