Gibbs: No style but lots of substance

Kieran Gibbs admits Arsenal didn’t beat Dortmund with their usual attacking guile but insists last night’s one-nil win further underlines the growing character of Arsene Wenger’s squad.

Part of a defence which denied Jurgen Klopp’s side from scoring on home turf for the first time in 61 games, the England left-back told UEFA.com that the Gunners proved a point by returning home with three as the qualification battle in Group F heats up.

“It was a massive victory and it was important, especially after the first game, because we wanted to prove something and we’ve done that. We certainly didn’t do it in style, but the way we won the game shows that we’ve got a certain character in the team now.

“It’s not an easy place to come to. Not many teams come here and get a result, so we can take that as a positive and we’ve put ourselves in a strong position. Now it’s important that we take advantage of that.”

Having watched Aaron Ramsey again grab the headlines with the winning goal, Gibbs was almost lost for words trying to explain the Welshman’s sudden potency in the box.

“I’ve no idea [why he’s scoring so many goals]. I’m going to have to ask him what he’s been eating for breakfast because it seems to be doing the trick.”

Arseblog News presumes Ramsey is on a diet of Lucky Charms [that stuff is like crack] although perhaps fearful of drug testers questioning his rainbow coloured piss the Welshman chose not to confirm whether he starts each day with lashings of multi-coloured marshmallows. Instead he spoke glowingly about about the team’s performance.

“It was a great achievement. We had a game plan, we stuck to it and it worked. Obviously I’m delighted with the goal and delighted for the team.

“We had more possession in the first half. I looked at the stats at half-time and we had more of the ball, but we were always wary of what they were capable of doing. They proved in the reverse fixture that they’re good at defending and catching teams on the counterattack, so we stayed nice and solid. We restricted them to long-range efforts in the first half and managed to counterattack them and get the goal.

“Both teams are quite similar in their styles. They like to get the ball down and play, create opportunities and defend well as a team. That’s something we’ve improved on over the last few seasons. They came to our place the other night and scored on the counterattack and we did the same to them tonight.

“There’s still a lot of work to be done but we’re in a good position now. We knew what we had to do and we did it, but there are two tough games to go to finish the job off.”

I love the tingly feeling you get when you win a Champions League game. Cheers to the team for grinding one out!

Double98

There is winning a champions league match and nights like last night… Last night reminded me of 1994 cup winners final against parma… they huffed and puffed all night and broke like waves on our rock like defence. We were compact and efficient and deadly in attack. There is no now weak link in the squad – theres noone to groan about.. i would be confident that any player could be left out – even Giroud because Bendtner is more than a handful for a centreback pairing even if hes not scoring. Jenks and Nacho are fine back ups and… Read more »

Ooh to! Ooh to be! Ooh to be a Gooner!

Soluble gold

It’s their second time of not scoring at home, happened against mochengladbach.
First defeat in UCL at home by an English team. Big ups gooners

Geezer

Gladbach defeat was away afaik

Rajthegoon

Unbelievable defensive performance last night. Gibbs is really shaping up as a world class full back. Definitely needs to be in the England squad for the World Cup.
Arsenal need to give Sagna a new contract and double his wages FFS!
Arsenals fluid play but knowing when to dig in has got me the feeling that we could do the double this season.

Oh, I’m having a crisis!

Gooner in Spain

I agree he fully deserves to be in the squad but Baines provides stiff competition. He’s much better going forwards, while Gibbs is probably only marginally better in defence (if at all).

wanda

Gibbs has come a long way. Remember in 2009 when ji sung park caused him a nightmare due to his inexperienced, and we would wish that Clichy (of all people) was fit? I love this guy, his transformation from rookie to a solid leftback is awesome. Long live Gibbs. (I did not even know he has a twin brother and both were gooners from a small age)

Dr Baptiste

I read Ramsey’s comments in his tone and it still sounded boring. Glad he’s exciting on the pitch instead….

mike

look, not every1 can be christopher walken

Tah

Arteta was once again brilliant!

wanda

Off topic but I can’t stop thinking where Adebayor, Denilson, Squid, Almunia, Arshavin, and even Gervinho would have taken us. The manager has transformed this team greatly and it is going to dominate world and English football again like it did ten years ago.

chamakh

adebayor is a cheat! Good riddance – the twat

Pooner

I love this team! So much fight in them! Biggest off the pitch priority has to be getting Super Bac to sign a new contract!

Dallas

I was highly impressed by the performance of the entire team and the coaching crew and implore them to keep the winning going by beating Man U come Sunday.

I dream Arsenal

Let everyone in the team have that same breakfast Rambo has!

Wenger Burger

So i heard tottenham is playing in a european competition tonight.

Baz

So many small teams in the Europa League that nobody has heard of. Should be an easy win for Sheriff Tiraspol

Sorry to correct you, but bvb didn’t scored in a goalless draw on 3.11. 2012 in the league against stuttgart (via transfermarkt). Since then, they played 26 home games, though in was the only game in this and the two previous seasons when they didn’t score at home. In Europe, they didn’t scored against Sevilla on 30.9.2010. But when you consider that bayern also scored in all home games in this and the previous year except the one against Gunners, it’s pretty good anyway.

Fattcheeked

Who else is glad and thankful we’re not participating in Thursday night football against mighty teams like FC Sheriff?

pedro

we had fewer chances but still managed to win it, says a lot about our new found efficiency. This smile won’t fade and I’m so loving it.

palace gunner

Afc defended well dortmund have a good record for scoring at home, we will beat man. U with gd football

Wenger Burger

FC Sheriff, u’re not kidding!

Serge

Wenger's Aide

If gibbsy doesn’t play for The Three Lions, its their loss not his… He’s top top quality

Roland C Rozario

It was Singapore time …the wee hours in the morning of Thursday 7 Nov.2013. I was not disappointed!
The game, as expected, was tough…in the heart of Dortmund’s German cauldron. But the Gunners held their ground and came out tops!
Fantastic! They had belief and that proved crucial!
Now lets take that same resolute and belief at Old Trafford and beyond!
CONGRATS for a fantastic win!

Wenger Burger

I bet no english team have beaten FC Sheriff before.

FC Sheriff Tiraspol (Russian: ФК Шериф Тирасполь, known simply as Sheriff) is an association football club located in Tiraspol, Transnistria (Moldova). The club had dominated Moldovan football since 2001, winning twelve championship titles in the Moldovan National Division out of thirteen in this time frame.

Jijo

They play FC Thieves next.. if they pass Sheriffs that is..

Duby

Point of correction: Dortmund lost to Gladbach not on their ground.

Dr Baptiste

Not sure what your point is…. This is about Dortmund not scoring at home due to our incredible defensive display. Dortmund were away when they lost to Mönchengladbach.

Johnny 99

Still buzzing. I bloody love Gibbs, just goes about his job in a quiet and efficient way, has a 7/10 game every week, so nice to see.

Penis

I forgot to eat breakfast this morning

Gerry

Cracking Match, worth the staying up late to watch the match

Arsenal 2- Man u 1 on sunday

YOU MANC LOVING SWINE…

Theres no way that shower will breach our defence…

😀

arsepedant

Manc cunts 0-8 ARSENAL

santori

He’s absolutely right. We were outplayed for stretches but we were also reticent in committing too much forward. The thinking was mature in grabbing the 3 points ahead of trying to impress. And that required a solid defense. We were solid (for most parts). The team smelt blood in the water and knew we would get a goal. After all, it is a nigh guarantee these days that Ramsey wills core in a game courtesy of the footballing gods. So a job well done. Other commendable thing is we have been employing the off side trap to good effect. Did… Read more »

Goontang

I really think we need to goto Old Trafford with the same mentality. You could tell that the lads went to Dortmund thinking “okay, we cannot lose, a draw would be a great point”. Their was so much emphasis on defending as a team that we managed to nick a goal in the end and get the points because our defending was flawless.

If we goto Old Trafford and atleast get a point i will be happy. 3 and i will probably shit my pants with excitement.

fsc

I’m curious to know how you’ll feel if we win 0-5? 🙂

Abu Bakarr Koroma ABK Freetown,Sierra Leone

Arsenal is like a religion to me,so i think wenger must sign a natural goal scorer if only we want to win treble this season. Go Go Gunners and Gun United come Sunday with LMG Guns.
