Arteta: we take belief from last year

Mikel Arteta says that last season’s win against Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena gives the team the belief that they can repeat the feat this time around.

Trailing 3-1 last season, Arsenal won the game 2-0 and scared the Germans sufficiently that they took the ball to the corner to keep it away from their end of the pitch.

The Spaniard told the pre-match press conference that he believes lightning can strike twice.

“Last year does create more belief that the result is possible,” he said. “It is a tough place to come but we believe and we have been fighting the whole season to be in the Champions League and we don’t want to throw it away.

“It is vital that we score a goal. Obviously, the game changes and the psychological game starts and that is where we could have an advantage.

“We will do our maximum to make it as difficult as we can and of course you can win any game 2-0 and this is no different.”

His words were echoed by Olivier Giroud who scored early in last season’s game and wants the team to do the same again tomorrow night.

“Hopefully we can keep a clean sheet first because we need to keep our goal clean and maybe if we score early, why not?

“It will put them under pressure and trying to score early in the game will be one of the keys in the game. Bayern are a really good team so it will be a tough game, but I think we have a chance to go through.”

We must not panic…..we scored 2 goals in a couple of minutes on Saturday and we can do it again tomorrow

ElCapitano

We so nearly did it last year. Anyone else?? but I’ve noticed that every time we play one of Pep’s teams, we always seem to get a red card / injury or something to get us down to 10 men, so he’s always had a numerical advantage over us at some point in the previous tie’s. He’s never really beaten us man for man, our (first 11 vs his first 11) in most previous tie’s we’ve always gone in to the match with big name injuries (e.g Cesc, RVP were always injured) etc.. I think the only time we’ve fielded… Read more »

JJ

C’mon you Gunners!!!

Michael

Keep it tight at the back and counter with ruthless efficiency as we did against Everton.

bip

We can do it. We will do it.

Hi-brid

Let’s do this.

Milo

Hey guys, this is off topic but i’ve got a question.

I’m from holland and In 2 weeks i’ll be in london for the weekend.
Does anyone know a nice pub or something where i can watch the chelsea – arsenal game?

Thanks

A Yank In King Arsene's West Stand

Where will you be staying? The Tollington, near the stadium, is always good for atmosphere.

Checked it on the net. Lookes nice.

I haven’t booked a hotel yet but I think it’ll be somewhere in the central. I’l just ask a cab driver to take us there.

Thanks

easy tiger

If you stay in the city central you could try “The old Coffee house” just of Regent street. Small nice pub….

Fatgooner

Lets be honest: we’ve got no chance. If you don’t win, and can’t even score in, your home games then you don’t win the tie – simple. Last year, Bayern decided not to turn up at their home game; it won’t happen this time. We needed at least a home draw to take to Germany to give us a chance. Maybe if we had started with a decent striker, and not Ja Ja Binks, then we might have got something out of that game at Ashburton Grove. At least we’re still in the FA Cup, and Champions’ League elimination will… Read more »

Yawn, your boring comments are getting old now.
Ask yourself this: Why do I support Arsenal?
You may find that after answering you will remove the word gooner from your name.

Petit's Handbag

You’re going to feel so stupid when you realise it’s actually Jar Jar Binks…..

Fatgooner

Sorry! I bet you’re a Star Trek nerd too.

Petit's Handbag

You’re a guy who calls himself fat & basically trolls on an Internet Blog
You must be quite the epicentre of fun at parties

PS: Star Trek nerds are called Trekkies

suci-gooner

Lol.. i get the FAT.. but Gooner? really

HoHoHo Green Gooner

Until now I’d never considered the fairly obvious reality that masochists must also follow football. Finally I understand.

the only sam is nelson

Good God you can’t wait for us to fail, can you? The Everton result must have really hurt.

By the way it’s all well and good having a thoroughly pessimistic outlook and bleak opinions but you really might want to consider where you draw the line, and slagging off an inexperienced yet promising youngster would probably be a good place to have a word with yourself. Expecting the finished result from a player that young and new to the team simply marks you out as a moron, rather than saying anything worthwhile about the lad.

Pedro

The answer is in what Arteta just said ‘Belief’!

sockgunner

To be honest, i`ve been following this bloog for quite some time an seen a lot of comments……… i`ve come to the conclusion that you’re a bit of a twat.

arsepedant

Your constant overwhelming negativity really does get tiresome. If Arsenal disappoints you so badly, why don’t you go away and support another team?

Jijo

You are unbelievable. One of a kind. But in a ‘negative’ way!

Victor

A very early goal is a surefire way of imposing ourselves. I pray we get one before the 20th minute and then daze them in midfield with quick passing and bvb-esque harassing when out of posession. COYG.

Rajthegoon

I believe the Ox is our answer. He’ll bomb it up and down that right hand side like on Saturday. What a freakin’ talent and work horse!

Aedan

It won’t happen twice in two years. Manchester City’s efficient display yesterday in dispatching a lowly Wigan side is enough proof that lightning does not strike twice

Victor

Obviously soliciting for thumbs downs. Is it all that fun?

BFGooner

It will be 2-0 going into ET and then Giroud will score the winner off his erect penis.

2013-2014 = 2003-2004

A thumbs-up AND a thumbs-down for that comment!

Back to topic, I think the first-minute Giroud goal last year at the Allianz Arena may have come TOO early. As long as we go 1-0 up before 60 minutes then game on!

Last year after going 2-0 up at 82 or so minutes from Koscielny’s header, it looked like our players panicked a bit. Areteta made some silly fouls that helped Bayern waste time. Whoever plays tomorrow I’d like to say “Stay calm, you’re all Gooners!”

Mesut Aussie

That Everton result – awesome. The momentum has started to gather. Let’s keep it going! We’re nearly there boys, on three counts!

benvnc

I feel like part of a secret society that’s plotting a large scale, mind-blowing, giant-destroying masterpiece.

Hajdúk

There’s a place for people like you Fatgooner. Its called Arsenal News Review. Legend has it its located somwhere in the dark corners up Piers Morgans bum. I hear its got great acoustics.

Karlito

It’s amazing what an early goal can do! And who knows, maybe the ref might send a Bayern player off this leg? Anything is possible, after all, we all thought it was forgone conclusion we were going to play City in the FA cup semi!! That mini rest for Ozil seems to have done the trick, Giroud has been netting a few of late and the Ox is busting his gut.

Eiregun

Arteta looks determined, or else he looks angry because wenger didn’t select him to go and see the new Lego movie

Hi-brid

We need to summon up The Merse’s unbelievable belief.

Goonerestgooner

Fatgooner, have a day off mate, FFS.

Off topic, but I’m hearing Ian Broomfield is going back to sp*rs? Blogs (or anyone) know anything about this? I thought we had signed him up a week ago?

Thierry Bergkamp

Keep them out til half time and anything’s possible

Rajthegoon

We dispatched two of Germany’s finest in 2013. Lets go back to where it all began and do it all over again! COME ON YOU MIGHTY FUCKIN’ ARSENAL!!!

SD

“It will put them under pressure and trying to score early in the game will be one of the keys in the game. Bayern are a really good team so it will be a tough game, but I think we have a chance to go through game.”

Rocky Rocastle

Wenger and Guardiola have met 5 times. It resulted in 1 Wenger win, 1 draw and 3 Guardiola wins. Now im all positive about getting a result at Allianz, But Guardiola dont let his teams slack, and they will have been preparing ferociously for this game, and i do believe it will be Harder to get a win on Bayern home turf this year. Last year they seemed to take the win for granted after their away thrashing of Arsenal, and the fact that they were dominating all competitions they took part in. they let their guard down, and Arsenal… Read more »

Henry's Right Foot

Ramsey could be back as well couldn’t he?

cock-a-doodle-do

Can lightening strike twice??
Yes-sir-eeeee
3 nil to the Arsenal, 3 nil to the Arsenal

Neil

I worry when I hear the word ‘belief’. It seems like an unlucky word for us. I would much prefer we have the ‘cojones’ to win like last year.

bergkamp's hooped sock

No better time to be playing Bayern. Ozil and Giroud have played themselves into form and we still have solid midfield options. Hopefully Sagna’s at LB; we need an experienced head to deal with Ribery. I’ve no doubt the Arsenal are going to turn up with their A-game. Both the Milan 3-0 and Bayern 2-0 were great games to watch, but hopefully a different result this time around!

zizou

He looks up for Kanu; he looks up for Henry, now they’re roaring!!!

Gunning

Hey how about we start with this line up
————————-Szczesny—————————

—-Sagna–Mertesacker–Koscielny–Vermalen—-

——Ox—————Rosicky————-Flamini——–

—————————-Ozil——————————–

———–Sanogo——————–Giroud—————

Gunning

Oops *Fabianski

Legrande

Sometimes it is better to allow your football do all the talking. No pun intended but Arsenal players need to learn to shut it and put in the much required Graft. If only the rallying calls were replicated on the pitch all season, we probably would be 9 points ahead of Chelsea.

In Soviet Russia, WENGA sacks YOU

Have you also noticed how the big teams always talk up the opposition rather than their own chances like we do.

Mike

I’d go with :
Fabianski
Sagna. Mertesacker. Koscielny. Vermaelen
Arteta
Oxlade. Rosicky. Cazorla
Ozil. Giroud

We gotta go all out!

In Soviet Russia, WENGA sacks YOU

I know this will get thumbed down to oblivion but I saw a gap in quality (as well as work rate -even at 11v11) at home against them.
Are they the better, harder working team? Yes, they are.
Can we beat them and qualify? Yes, we can.

palace gunner

No matter what win lose draw arsenal fc can prove teams, critics & play impressive football tnites game is massive & this team are having the hardest draws against top opposition coyg

Gunner pundit

Fabianski – jenkinson – mert – koscielny – sagna- arteta – flamini – AOC – ozil – cazorla – giroud. Final result 3-1.
