Sanogo: I know a goal will come

Yaya Sanogo says he’s confident his first Arsenal goal isn’t far away, and says that this season has been in which he’s sought advice from Robert Pires and Thierry Henry as he’s tried to settle into English football.

The young striker has been handed some plum starts by Arsene Wenger, including games against Liverpool and Bayern Munich, but has yet to get off the mark in red and white.

Speaking to the official site, he says it’s something he thinks about but is sure he’ll get that first strike under his belt soon.

“I think about it,” he said. “It’s normal as I’m a striker. There are a lot of people at the club who want me to score soon. They can see I am working hard and it would be a reward for me an them all to get this first goal.

“I know it will come.”

He missed the first part of the season through injury – although Arsene Wenger says the player was sent away for ‘conditioning’, not something he mentions in the interview – but has looked to former legends like Pires and Henry when they’ve been in training.

“I’m not naturally a very talkative guy but I ask a lot of questions and ask for advice. I think I can learn from anyone: a former great player or a less experienced one.

“There is always something that will be interesting. This season, Robert Pires has been training regularly with us and every time I can, I ask him stuff.

“It was the same with Thierry Henry when he was here with us. They are examples for me, and many of the other lads.”

And the former Auxerre man believes next season will be one in which he can take a big step forward.

“Next year, I will have done a proper pre-season and I will know the language and the football better. I will also have a better understanding with my team-mates.

“It is still new for me to play with them and although I have integrated very well in the squad, with a big help from the other French players in the team, I haven’t played too much, even at training with the rest of the squad.”

I like this guy, think he has a good future ahead of him, as long we have the striking options to keep too much pressure off of him

Kaz

Completely agree, he seems to have the correct attitude to learn and progress. It’ll be interesting to see what Wenger does with Joel Campbell. He’s an exciting talent, but I feel like there’s only space for either him or Sanogo in our squad. (Plus if we buy a top quality striker we’ll have: Podolski, Giroud, Sanogo, Campbell, Walcott and the top quality striker…seems like too many options?) Any thoughts?

Az Ahmed

Knowing how our injury list tends to grow as the season goes on, I would say we can’t have too many strikers. In addition, Podolski and Walcott normally play on the wings, so we are really looking at Giroud, Sanogo and Campbell as well as a top striker up front. In fact, I feel we need two top strikers, a defensive midfielder, a pacy winger in the mould of Pires and a spare jack of all trades defender.

Andy Mack

I thought Campbell was a winger!

thw14

Henry, Bergkamp, Kanu, Wiltord, Reyes.

And if you check posts from back then, I’m fairly sure you’ll still find discussions about whether getting in somebody would maybe improve us.

DR

Only way I can see Campbell here is if Poldi leaves tbh, as he can cover out wide, finish and has the potential to play centrally, plus that all important desire to make the right runs.

Maybe if we lose an option in midfield as then I can see the Ox moving back there more permanently…possibly phasing out Arteta and eventually Flamini with a new guy able to play deep.

Then again, if Wilshere and Ox can emulate Rambo’s development then we could easily play something more akin to a 4-4-2 regularly.

Angolan Girl Who Loves The Gunner

Yaya Sanogo! keep working hard, we believe in you! 😀

UndercoverMancGooner

I really like Sanogo’s attitude and there’s something about him – you don’t get top scorer in the U20 World Cup by being shite.

That said, I’d like to see him go on loan in the next couple of years, he’s still raw.

Bould's Eyeliner

next couple of years might be a far bit too much. He’s getting in to the right spots, and clearly he knows how to score – just has to settle down a bit. Let’s see what happens next season..

AriseSirBacary

Next season? He needs to go out on loan.

goonero

Sounds a lot like a certain welshman…

Stone

I agree. If we get the top quality striker we are all hoping for, Sanogo should go out on loan to another EPL team. Maybe Swansea will want him if they lose Bony.

non flying dutchman

Newcastle could be interested unless their French revolution has officially gone a bit ‘miserables’. I certainly would sooner we got Remy from QPR, so offer this guy up as his replacement at the sports direct arena.

Hopefully the lad can advertise himself well to either club on Monday.

JB

Not sure where this fact came from but he actually only scored 4 goals at the u20 world cup, not actually in the top 3.

revneville

“you don’t get top scorer in the U20 World Cup by being shite. ”

Usual cliché without any thought.

Mahamadou Dissa? Shite.
Pablo Couñago? Shite.
Dudu Cearense? Shite.
Eddie Johnson? Shite.
Etc.

Wen(gunn)er

He and Ox have combined so well on many occasions (albeit without end product), was really pleasing to watch 🙂

Dee

I’m pretty sure Sanogo will be another player who will prove Wenger’s doubters wrong. He’s still very raw, but I like the way he puts himself about on the pitch.

Heroldgoon

Tim krul wants your shot inside his net. He is desperate for it.

the fonz

ooh-er

Carib Gooner

I don’t know y I want to trust Sanogo with a start in the final, is it just me?

My Name Is Difficult To Pronounce

Pretty much.

glory Hunter

I think im with you Carib Gooner, my reasons are as follows:

I remember Theo struggling to score(& even control a ball) in his 1st season with us, & then bang scores the opening goal in the Carling Cup final.

But considering we went on to lose that final, then it might be best to keep Sanogo on the bench.

But if he does start (assuming he still hasn’t scored for us), then im going straight to the bookies to put money on Sanogo 1st goal 🙂

goonerbynature

To be fair, he scored against Everton and it was incorrectly ruled out. Nicely taken too.

#yayasanogoal

I hope he does well. Has a touch of the lukaku about him. Strong and surprisingly quick

glory Hunter

i agree, people have obviously forgotten how dire Lukaku was in his 1st few games for Chelsea, which is what convinced them to loan him out.

AriseSirBacary

Yeh! So loan him out!

son a goal

I can see him being a great player for us. He got pace and finishing will be better. We have all seen he can do it. Son your goals will come

gunner for ever

I strongly believe that Sanogo will be a top striker for us and again show AW still have the perfect eye to recruit and give chance for talented youngsters. In my opinion,AW have to buy a finished product(fox in the box type striker) who can share the pressure with Giroud and give completely free and relaxed atmosphere for Sanogo when he gets playing time for the first team in all competitions. Sanogo enjoys great height, body and fighting spirit and the rest skills will start showing up.The years ahead are bright for him.Keeping on hard work, he will get himself at the… Read more »

Aamir

He’s got a good head on his shoulders and seems like a very hardworking lad.
He’s from the same town as Henry, that can only be a good thing. He’s really confident too. He has all the raw ingredients to be a good striker, he just needs that first goal to gain some confidence.

I’m looking forward to seeing his development (we still need a new striker though)

Fatboy Gooney

You lemmings make me laugh!
Ha ha!

Yeh yeh sa-no-Goals!!
His too raw,
Way to clumsy,
Fall’s to floor,
couldn’t hit a cow’s arse,
With a barn door,
Yet, your still waiting,
for the Motherf#cker,
to score! 😉

Chairman Meow

FG why dont you go do a disney lemming and jump you bellend

goonero

Its sad how miserable bastards get their jollies off lambasting players. What exactly is it that you do for a living? I’d bet my fucking house that you are several hundred times worse at your job than sanogo is at his! ( Unless of course your job is being a miserable bastard )

Edu's Braces

I think he is the striker version of Kolo. Arsene is going to take this raw talent and mold him in to a quality player.

non flying dutchman

And then sell him to a major rival.

jason

Im a bit paranoid but is anyone worried about Man U next seasons spending good money getting good players with a good Manager and possible knocking us out of the champions league? Cause im not being funny we always struggle end of season and finish 4th.. and that cant simple keep happening anymore cause of the standard of this league it will cost us from now on… Arsenal, Man City, Chelsea, Liverpool, Man U and Everton… more than good enough to get top 4th these days… times have changed i feel in the future just getting champions league with our… Read more »

dgaj

I think this lad will surprise us. In the situations he’s been thrust in he’s never hidden.

There’s a decent player in there somewhere.

Scott P

Yeah, honestly to think of it, he had played in Ligue 2 for his whole career and then was thrust in against Liverpool and Bayern Munich. Had a damn good shot out of nothing against Munich too and if I remember correctly, probably would have been a goal against pretty much anyone except Neuer.

Fatboy Gooney

@dgaj

Theres also a hidden diamond in a lump of coal.
its in there, somewhere, but if lt could take a million years to surface!
😉

Danskin

I like his attitude. The kids looks talented but he has a long way to go.

Danny

Most inept striker I’ve seen at the Arsenal. Lee Chapman eat your heart out.

Heroldgoon

He does not hide…he wants the ball and will ask for it, that is a quality. ~ Monsieur Wenger.

raozila

I like the look of him, he could be more physical and build up, he could bully defenders around a bit like kompany lol

Indiegooner

Nowadays, Kompany is bullying only defenders from his own team.

Arsene Wenger's Penguin Suit

Looks average.

Henrydimma

Sanogo has a bright future, he plays well and gets in the right positions, just his finishing is a bit off. I hope the arsenal fans don’t get on his back too much cos I think he has the potential to go far. Gooners we need to not get so annoyed with our players and back them as the fans are half the team. Look at united, wenger has had worse teams than they have now and always finished in champs league. That says a lot about the legend we have

Ghanagunner

Can’t fault him for effort but the I won’t mind an Everton like loan.

Ben

You don’t have to wait for yearS to see the quality in a player and I don’t see much in Sanogo. He’s a bigger version of Gervinho: No touch whatsoever, clumsy on his legs and he seems to be the master of airshot. Hard work and wanting the ball doesn’t equal quality

Have you lowered your standards that much Arsenal fans?

squiggle

Gervinho who’s been brilliant for Lille, Cote d’Ivoire and now Roma? Who had some problems here but might have sorted them out if petulant fans hadn’t piled the pressure on him whenever he made a mistake?

glory Hunter

Completely disagree Ben, there’s no doubt he lacks composure in front of goal but that will hopefully come with time.
But he’s hold up and link up play is very good, his anxiousness to score is he’s undoing. If he learns to relax in front of goal, he’ll start banging them in.

Gervinho on the other hand didn’t even know how to kick a ball properly.

dexterthebear

I dont think a loan is the right thing. At his age players loaned out rarely become first team regulars. With him and giroud to back up a new striker next year we will be very strong in that area.

i just cant help thinking how much he reminds me of adebayor when he first came to us.

thyeCar2n Goon

Adebayor reminds me of Jar Jar Binks

Xxxrob

I reckon send him to a Swansea or Southampton next year and lets see what he’s got, the way Everton are playing I don’t see why he can’t do a lukaku and take some points off our rivals next year for us.

I like him

hieuving

A goal in the FA Cup Final will be brilliant! Yahhhhhhh

Arsenal-Induced Heart Attack Survivor

bazza

I like Sanogo he has all the attributes for a modern day striker height and pace and enthusiasm to chase lost causes which any supporter would applaud giving his all for the team, i believe he will come good AW has pulled another rabbit from the hat who cost nothing, he will gain valuable experience playing along the other quality players we have, not sure why AW has’nt mention any thing about Joel Campell he seems to have done ok on loan would of thought he was ahead of Sanogo in the pecking order but AW knows best on this… Read more »

Gutted his Everton goal didn’t count (should have).

Would have taken the pressure off the lad and given him confidence to step up.

non flying dutchman

Personally i would have preferred he’d buried that sitter layed out for him at stoke. Anyway why should there be any mental block. He did take his shot well against Howard whether the goal counted or not, so why does he then fluff his lines every time against Wigan in the cup? Sorry but I do think this guy just seems too average at his age to become anything special. Compare his ball control to Lukaku and Benteke, both of a similar age and playing style, and this guy is just coming up way too short all things given. (and… Read more »

Antstock

The boy needs playing time and a season loan spell wouldn’t hurt.

Nuts

I agree a loan next year with regular plying time will push him further along it’s done wonders with Campbell he’s a work in progress needs 2 to 3 years then may see the best

heihaci

Let’s just play him as a midfielder. He could be Diaby MkII

Mills (N7)

Young player, bags of potential, has physical problems, never hides, always wants the ball, tireless running, great attitude, becomes a lightning rod for discontent, manager shows faith: and what happens?

For Ramsey 18 months ago, read Sanogo now (I know ‘physical problems’ isn’t the best way to describe both conditioning training and a serious leg-break, but the parallels are there…) I’m getting seriously bored of people taking their frustrations out on players that don’t deserve it.

DR

Pfft, that was a over a year ago now. Everybody knows anything that happened longer ago than a month didn’t ACTUALLY happen, it was a mirage!

dont ask me again

I love Yaya’s sttitude and he seems a nice, cool guy to me. Still kinda raw but a season away on loan in the premiership will get him there. Nice lad!!!

Theendisnigh

I can see him asking for all that great advice: “Hey Thierry, how do I score a goal?”
“Well you kick the ball into the net Sanogo”.

EuripidesMac

“Don’t kick it at the goalie is Rule #1. Rule #2 is while following Rule #1, do kick it in between the metal poles so that it goes into what many people call the net.”

COYG!
CO-YY! (Young Yaya)

james-enfield

“Shoot where the goalie isn’t!”

santori

Sanogo is Giroud’s potential replacement. That’s what Wenger ‘bought’ him for. They have the same sort of physical approach and provide the same hold up play. Giroud is 27 so @21, Sanogo has the next couple of seasons to develop. He’s done good when on, a bit hurried but probably because he is too anxious to impress and will eventually learn to calm down a bit. BUt his control is decent and he looks for intelligent distribution when he has no opening for a shot. He is also marginally quicker than Giroud which is a good thing. I don’t get… Read more »

I like sanogo

It took Giroud sometime too to open his goal scoring.

Sebas

I think next season will see Liverpool struggle with the amount of games if they don’t get a bigger squad. They’re very similar to Arsenal in they have a small, but quality squad. United will be set back a few years because any new manager will try to change the philosophy of the football they play.

TommyGun

This guy could be an arsenal great like John Jensen.

LethGooner

Looking forward to the day he scores and dance around the corner flag

Momo (@MuhamLAD)

I remember when Giroud first started playing, everyone defended him because the likes of Henry didn’t score until his 9th game for the club. Unfortunately, Podolski and Sanogo don’t get the same defence for reasons I don’t understand.

Personally, I’m not too worried about Sanogo. Sounds like he works hard in training & clearly doesn’t give a fuck about pressure based off of the cup games he started in. Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.
