Alexis Sanchez, the Red Beast of London: By the Numbers

Alexis Sanchez secured Arsenal three points and the club’s third League win with a brace at the Stadium of Blight today. The goals were Alexis’ 4th and 5th League goals and brought his total to 8¹ for the season in all competitions. But more than just score goals (not that there’s anything wrong with that) Alexis Sanchez is a hyperactive player with an iron will to win, a “demon on the pitch” and fills exactly the role that Luis Suarez was supposed to fill when Arsenal bid for him two years ago.

Like Suarez, Sanchez is a game winner. His goals against Besiktas and Sunderland were outright game winning goals and he put Arsenal in front with goals against Leicester, Man City, Southampton, and Hull. Not one to give up, his assists also earned come from behind draws/wins  against Palace and Hull. This is exactly the role Suarez played for Liverpool last season, saving them points when their defense went Keystone Cops and earning them wins against lower table opposition.

And more than just getting goals, Sanchez, like Suarez, is a perpetual motion machine on the pitch, a constant threat to the opposition back line with his ability both on and off the ball.

In the summer of Arsenal’s interest in Suarez I devised a method for measuring a striker’s total contribution to a team. By combining all of their stats and looking at them on a per90² basis I was able to come up with an “Actions per90” metric. I didn’t account for every action, for example I left off passing, but rather just the things we want strikers doing: dribbling, shooting, scoring, assisting, creating shots for others, drawing fouls, and winning aerial duels.

When I compared Luis Suarez to other top strikers like Messi and Ronaldo, the stats were clear: Suarez was a monster on the pitch.

He attempted 187 shots, 255 dribbles, and created 90 chances for his teammates. Those three numbers alone totaled more than either Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo. In fact, he was the second most active forward of all the players I measured (not an exhaustive list) just behind CRon — .08 actions per90 behind Ronaldo. That’s an infinitesimally small difference between the two players. It’s no wonder Arsene Wenger wanted Suarez and why Barcelona eventually stumped up Alexis plus £40m to land him — despite a rather long rap sheet of transgression.

Event Messi Suarez Ronaldo
Minutes 2629 2953 2716
Goals 46 23 34
Assists 12 5 10
Shots 163 187 235
Dribbles 204 255 123
Key Passes 46 90 62
Turnovers 41 79 64
Aerial Duels 20 42 98
Fouls Drawn 74 61 81
Fouls committed 12 48 27
Offsides 16 39 31
Sum 634 829 765
4.15 3.56 3.55
Actions per 90 minutes
21.70
25.27
25.35

Suarez, as you can see, from both the stats³ and from the constant biteymcracism, is a beast.

If we separate out the negative actions (turnovers, failed dribbles, shots off target, etc.) Suarez comes down to earth a bit. His negative outweigh the positives about 57-43%. But still, you want a player like this on your team because he’s such a menace whenever he has the ball. He may dribble into a blind corner, but makes up for lack of quality in sheer volume.

Sanchez is still finding his feet in the Premier League but already most fans are impressed with his tireless work rate.  Never one to shy away from the ball, Alexis is a similar type of smash-mouth footballer as Luis Suarez (except without the biting and the racism).

Events Sanchez Suarez
Minutes 603 2953
Goals 5 23
Assists 2 5
Shots 21 187
Dribbles 44 255
Key Passes 18 90

Tackles 38 64
Sum 191 893
Minutes per action 3.16 3.31
Actions per 90 minutes
28.51
27.22

If you’re paying attention, you’ll notice that I included tackles in this set. That’s because Sanchez, well, Sanchez tackles… a lot! He had 6/8 successful tackles today against Sunderland — three up front and three in the back/middle and it’s crazy that Sanchez is both Arsenal’s leading goal scorer, leading playmaker (2 assists and tied with Özil for key passes), second leading dribbler (2.3 per game) and fourth on the team in tackles per game. So, I felt I had to include Sanchez’ tackles.

The tackles do bump him up above Suarez in the actions per90 category but he still compared favorably without them coming in at 22.84 Aper90 versus Suarez’ 25.27 Aper90. His percentage positive and negative is favorable versus Suarez as well. Not quite at the 50-50 mark of great forwards, he is 54-46% negative over positive.

Personally, I love the work rate of Sanchez, especially tracking back to tackle, though it would be nice if he had players behind him tackling freeing him to concentrate his efforts on playing as a forward. But overall his contributions this season so far have made him nigh impossible for opposition defenders to contain. He’s the beast in the box that Arsène tried to get when Arsenal bid on Suarez two summers ago. Or as Wenger put it, the demon on the pitch:

Suarez is the dream player. An angel in training and a demon on the pitch.

Everything I’ve read indicates that Sanchez was recruited by Arsenal specifically because he is such a delightful person off the pitch. Everything I’ve seen from Sanchez this season indicates that he will be a delight for Arsenal fans on the pitch. A demon in red. There’s no wonder why Liverpool wanted Sanchez to fill the void left by Suarez’ inevitable departure, like Suarez, he’s a beast.

And he’s Arsenal’s beast.

Qq

¹Besiktas, Leicester, Man City, Southampton (CC), Galatasaray, Hull, Sunderland (x2). He has also assisted in the following matches: Palace, Galatasaray, and Hull.

²This isn’t too complicated. Not every player plays a full 90 every time they start. Since we tend to think in concrete terms like “games played” we like to find a way to prorate stats on the basis of the minutes that a player played rather than games they played. For example, Sanchez currently averages 2.6 shots per game over 8 games (21 shots). But we know Sanchez hasn’t played all 90 minutes of all 8 games (720) and instead has only played 603 total minutes. If we want to imagine how many shots he would take if he played a full 90 every game we would simply divide his minutes by 90 (6.7) and then divide the total shots (21) by that number of imaginary full games and arrive at a per90 of 3.13.
³These are League stats only.

Other players should be ashamed of themselves seeing his work rate

nijjy

yeah that’s what i was wondering. i was embarassed for other players of his team. it’s still early days, but it’s not too difficult to imagine alexis being the best buy of the season come may,201. the chelsea-loving media is going weak in the knees for fabregas and costa. they’re saying how mourinho is a genius and wenger a fool on the fabregas signing. i know fabregas is a wonderful player, but so many of our players are out injuried, just returning from injuries and alexis is doing it all on his own, whereas fabregas has the likes of oscar,… Read more »

RoyaleWithCheese

I don’t think you can have that mindset. Their insane work rate is a big part of what makes players like Alexis and Suarez some of the best forwards in the game. It’s very, very rare to have players like that, and I don’t think you can just expect every player to do the same. But hopefully it will encourage the other players to push themselves as much as they can.

RoyaleWithCheese

And I’m verry happy that the similarities between Alexis and Suarez end on the pitch by the way. There are a lot less cannibalism with Alexis, and much more saving injured rabbits from wild boars.

Turkis Gooner

Its mouth watering imagining him and Walcott on the flanks!

Bolarinwa Mayowa

His 1st goal reminds me of Rosicky’s vs sp*rs in the FA cup last season, just imagine what that attark will be like with those two in the starting 11, i would love to see that especialy with concerns over Cazorlas form

La Défense

Alexis had 6 tackles, 2 interceptions and 1 clearance against Sunderland today!

Alexis the Sanchez – Beast of Beasts!

La Défense

And he blocked a shot too, for good measure.

Kelechi

To sum it up, Alexis Sanchez is bae.

Trimi

No.

Dear god no.

Oh. I have just down-thumbed the original post with the opprobrium it deserves.

As it was last year as well..

Tj

Are Suarez’s stats 2012-13 or 2013-14?
Very impressive from Sanchez. May well improve when there’s less forced rotation around him. Something to look forward to 🙂

Notaspursfan

Alexis is just awesome, It would be good if others could copy his work rate’
Anyway enough of the football stuff, far more important item on the agenda.
Where the f*ck is Rambling Pete? Any chance of an APB Blogs?
Pete if you can read this come home, we love you, in a manly kind of way, of course.

I’ve been watching Arsenal for over 40 years & I can’t think of a player who has ever worked so hard. We are always looking for the new Henry, the new Adams etc etc but he is nothing like any player we have had before. I think he will only get better & he will drag the other players with him to a new level.

As the injury situation improves and the new players settle in I expect the performances to improve and exciting times are not far away.

FREDDO

Wenger seems to have now realised that he can play Alexis in the Messi (no 10) role, which he plays for Chile. Personally, if I had to chose between the two I would take Alexis because, while his talent is only slightly less, his attitude is a hell of a lot better.

Daniel

When has Messi had a poor attitude? Say what you want but Messi is a class player overall

FREDDO

You obviously haven’t watched much of Messi. Last season, he looked disinterested. This season, he’s a bit better. But Sanchez runs twice as much. Tracks back, tackles, presses. Messi no longer loves the game. Sanchez does.

Arseblog-mania

I genuinely bit my tongue out of uncontrollable excitement during the summer transfer window when his link to use began looking real. Took 2 weeks to heal but Sanchez has repaid the hurt many times over already. I bought my first-ever Arsenal jersey from the UK with his name emblazoned though living in Nigeria and being a fan for 14 years. He thrills my soul that much. Paradoxical that the newest team member bleeds Red & White on the pitch while the Red & White bred JW languidly enjoys the scenery when defending in our 18″ box. Hopefully we don’t… Read more »

at this stage of the season Sanhez is FA player of the year

this aint FIFA bitches

Yeah unfortunately the FA would give it to Diego Costa

Eternal Titi Berg Pat Nostalgia

Top top top player, really world class, Mr Sanchez. Our problem is that each year we only get one world class perfomer and other players around him quite average. Last three years RVP, Ramsey and now Alexis. Yes Ramsey was world class when healthy last year putting in player-of-year like performance. Let’s give recognition and encouragement to Ramsey and we may have two world-class and even three with Theo.

Crew

not convinced with Ramsey playing more forward. he seems much more comfortable playing next to a DM and not in front.

loose_cannon

I think when he’s deeper he times his runs better and gets through more midfielder work. When he plays further forward it’s almost like he’s trying to be a striker and he doesn’t get involved enough.

Joakim

Lets play him in “bubblewrap” for the rest of the season. The thought of him getting injured is beyond scary.

Crew

Alexis the ‘bubble boy’

Joe

You put Suarez’s name in the quote. Should be Sanchez.

Evsch

Alexis is world class and no doubt in it

Dat gooner Al Zee

“Da Red Beast”! Pretty cool…the only thang ticking for the arsenal right now…Alexis Sanchez is GOD!!!

A K 57

Just after the game, I was thinking Sanchez is to us what Suarez have been to Liverpool in last few seasons. He has all the attributes to match Suarez as a player without the malaise. This article echos those thoughts.

joe

?Great article, love seeeing all them words ands the numbers all up in there. kudos to you sir. Thank you.

Unfortunatekly missed the game today as in middle of pan-Ireland work/funeral/blah. Were we really that bad or was it a tough away day? did the the team look up for it?

Joel Campbell's gurn.

I thought we were OK. Not at all great, but certainly better than we have been. But when all is said, two away wins in a week ins’t bad. As everyone is saying Sanchez does show everyone else up. But still, people have different games.

Cazorla, however was particularly worrying. HAd he his shooting boots on we could have comfortably won 4/5/6-0.

Stillmatic

Sine he’s so similar to Suarez, maybe it’s time to try him as a cf.

Loop A Hole

Why change something when it’s working though? Exactly what has happened to our football this season compared to last season’s 4-2-3-1 ..

Stillmatic

Well…. it’s not working, isn’t that the problem? It’s just that Sanchez has been saving us inspite of our poor play. And people said the same thing before Wenger converted RVP to a CF (“why fix what isn’t broken?”) and we sell know how that worked out.

Fact is we can all see the similarities between Sanchez and Suarez, and Suarez would’ve been great on the wing also. But we all know he’s a great CF.

Rohith J

The great thing about Sanchez is that he will give you performance after performance if he’s played at CF, RW, LW or CAM. It’ll let us play a desired combination depending on the opposition. He is really a well-behaved and value for money Suarez.

Jaymin

The guy is an absolute hero for us. The best buy Wenger has made since Fabregas (the teenager.) So much skill allied with a lionheart and an F1 engine.

this aint FIFA bitches

He only signed Fabregas as a teenager, much to many fans disappointment

Trimi

He deserves a chant. Any ideas?

Joel Campbell's gurn.

I saw on twitter ‘he scores on the left, he scores on the right, Alexis Sanchez makes Robin look shite.’

Thats my vote.

Loke

Lets see how long it takes the team to drag him down to their level. I want to see Wenger make some tough decisions and sell some players and replace them with some proper world class hard working cannons fit for a big club like Arsenal. Our Wage bill apparently exceeded Chelsea’s recently, but the quality of our team is a long way off the quality of theirs. The biggest difference though is the balance of their team compared to ours. And what do Rosicky, Poldi or Campbell etc have to do to get some game time? It is ridicoulous… Read more »

badaab

Should change the Liverpool defense to “Keystone Kops.”

Bouldy's Tupee

Just the idea of having Theo & Alexis on the flanks is mouth watering.

If wenger wants to play attacking football then why don’t they just play with a false 9 w/either Giroud, Ramsey, Santi, Welbeck, or even Ozil. Arsenal play a possession style again. Playing high pressure and doubling up to recover the ball in the midfield is a great tactic. We have the ball players to do it.

Just a thought…just throwing that out there. Regardless, the numbers are outstanding blogs. The team is slowly progressing.

COYG!!!

Gooner

I am absolutely loving this new version of By the Numbers, some superb analysis. Very insightful.

What more needs to be said about Alexis? I’m so happy he’s an Arsenal player. Truly world class, he’s singlehangedly winning us these points.

arsenal fan

I hope the whole team starts playing better or at the very least make the thru passes his runs and positioning deserve. It makes me fearful every time he remonstrates to the other team mates when they fail to notice his run or fail to pass the ball to him when he in a better position.

timmytimtimothy

I just wish we had all our best players fit at the same time for once. If not that, I’d like to see us field this lineup.

Szczesny

Sanchez – SANCHEZ – SANCHEZ – Sanchez

Sanchez – Sanchez

Sanchez – Sanchez – Sanchez

Sanchez

Note: Ideally the capitalised version of SANCHEZ is actually two Sanchez’s in Arsene Wenger’s jacket – one riding on the other’s shoulders – forming some kind of mega Sanchez.

What a player.

Why is flamini still in arsenal kits. This dude suck!

Pakistan Arsenal!

The only thing Alexis doesn’t have like Suarez is the cutting edge 😉

Anthony Payne

Let us also not forget his assist for Podolski’s well taken winner in Brussels on Wednesday night in a game where once again he was our best player.

rch

Quite simlpe really Alexis comes from the street and understands that he has been given a chance in life few others have.Football is 80 per cent persperation and 20per cent inspiration
He has already taken over as leader on the pitch and hopefully his enthusism rubs off on some of the others who forget how lucky they are to play and make vast amounts of money playing pro football

Ant Lester

“El Mandinga” South American Devil

“El Cherufe” the mythical Chilean volcano fire beast.

Both sound cool, but good luck getting a song out of those words!

paul

Can’t believe he followed the shot in for his second goal – there seemed no point in doing so, until, the red beast slotted home!

Sums up his effort – he needs a “Freddie Lungberg” chant – he’s everywhere!!

Goon

I know the energetic style of Alexis and Cazorla and even Ramsey isn’t part of Ozils game, but a bit of it won’t hurt (tackling)

Vat

Sanchez is basically everything we though he would be. Ive come to realize one thing with arsenal – there is no injury free time when everything will click into place. Arsenal have got to make the best of what they have. If and when Theo returns, incorporate him and maximize efficiency. Arsene has to figure out how to maximize Alexis with Santi, Rambo and Jack. If Rambo is out, maximize with Alexis Theo Santi and Ox. He has to figure out how to use our pace up top – with Alexis and Welbeck, why aren’t there runs being made in… Read more »

Alexisssssssss

And another group responds

Sanchezzzzz!!!!

its not much but until anyone has better why not?

santori

Slightly apples and pears. This sort of statistically analysis is broad stroke at best. It’s like saying say Beckam had a more powerful shot than Roberto Carlos (Read it in a book once) but at what distance was the shot taken from and at what point of the shot? That said, no doubting the work rate of Sanchez. To me, he is more of an attacking wide player but he has poacher’s instincts and can perform and “Eduardo’ role. He is not a CF although he can play there when occasion demands. His ability to pluck the ball from the… Read more »

Being a Chilean myself, I always knew Alexis was going to become a World class, and Im so happy for him he is accomplished that with a team like Arsenal….JUGADORAZO
