Wenger: It was one-way traffic and we lost

Arsene Wenger says his side were naive and lacked efficiency as a heavily-depleted Manchester United won 2-1 at the Emirates.

Arsenal dominated huge swathes of the game and squandered a host of chances before a Kieran Gibbs’ deflection gave the visitors the lead before Wayne Rooney snatched a decisive second as the Gunners chased an equaliser.

Speaking to the BBC after the game, the boss spoke frustratedly about his side’s familiar failings in defence.

“It was one-way traffic and we lost the game, we have to take it on the chin. I know we’ll be criticised for it but you have to respect the energy levels we put in.

“We paid for the slightest mistake and it’s very frustrating to come away with nothing.

“We had the best chances and we could have finished better. At 1-0 we should have been more cautious not to give the second goal away. There was plenty of time to come back and that’s where we made the mistake.

“In our job when you don’t win, you’re very concerned but there are a lot of positives in this team. If we can keep this going with the quality and the energy levels we have, we can bounce back very quickly.”

Right now it feels like we’ve all the bouncebackability of a slab of concrete. A slab of concrete that has a suicidal tendancy to commit too many players forward leaving itself open to a counterattack…again and again and again.

Love what he’s done for the club and respect the hell out of the man… but he simply has to go.

Remember the invincibles

Wenger out. We need change, for better or for worse, we need it. It was one way traffics, but we lost. But predictably we lost Arsene. Not just ‘we lost’. Go. Leave now. Your time is up.leave before you overstay your welcome

UlsterGooner

And take Ozil, Sanchez and all those other players who wanted to be managed by Wenger with you??

Az Ahmed

I’d rather they go and we win something than they stay and we don’t. My pick for new manager is Pep. I’m sure Sanchez won’t mind being coached by Pep again.

Mpls

Good luck with that.

Gunner From Another Mother

You speak as if things such as winning something and Pep managing The Arsenal are foregone conclusions…

Az Ahmed

It is for me. Pep is a winner. Wenger is a specialist8 failure

Arsenalista

Whats the point in having those players if we cant win, we almost have a title winning squad without a title winning manager. Wenger has to go, it was plain to see what we needed about 3 or 4 years ago, a solid defensive midfielder and Wenger flat out denied to see it that way. Wenger has to much loyalty to average to good players, thats just not good enough. I love Wenger but he has lost his touch. We have everything in place to fight it out with the very best in world football, but sadly our manager is… Read more »

frank from vienna

no, but he can´t get the best out of ozil (and podolski and cazorla…) and it seems he´s frustrating sanchez very quickly as well…

Chineseses

I’m sorry but I fail to see how what he has done for this club 10 years ago is relevant today. If we can be better without him, then he should go. Also, don’t get me wrong, I appreciate him very much, and the things he’s done, but sentiment will not win you games. And it’s not a season or two, we’ve been consistently average for a good ten years now.

WengersNoseHair

YES People! You heard it here first! Champions League is the New Average!

RobM

I think its fair to say that champions league qualification has been _our_ average for a while now… with little signs of improvement.

WengersNoseHair

You are right. With Money Bags Chelsea and Man City we shouldn’t feel entitled to do better than we have been.

Gonneroz

Please don’t just blame the manager. Think, yes he’s made mistakes and it may well be time for a change. We are never going to compete in the league with city or Chelsea until the playing field is level-fact! 3rd or 4th is our place-fact. So if you win a cup -remember!! and finish in top four that’s pretty good. Don’t for a minute think a new manager guarantees anything. How about being sensible and placing a tiny bit of criticism on the players as well? A new manager could be the right step but it’s just as likely to… Read more »

RobM

I don’t mind the fact that we’re not doing better anything like as much as I mind the fact that the club apparently shows little motivation to do better.

WengersNoseHair

So Ozil and Sanchez are not enough for you?

He's got no hair but we don't care...

You really fail to grasp the basics don’t you.

Of course Ozil and Alexis are enough for us, the problem (over the last 8 years) has been his failure/stubbornness to fill in the gaps when we’ve been so close to winning trophies.

Within those 8 years he:
Failed to sort the keeper situation fast enough.
Failed to sort the striker situation fast enough.
& this year, his monumental cock up to not sort the CB situation out at all when Vermaelen left is why our manager needs to step down.

Az Ahmed

Thumbed down by accident

exiledgooner

A Ferrari or a Bugatti will not win you a race if there is not a competent driver behind the wheel. Ozil and Sanchez are superb players, certainly, but they are being wasted in a team which seems to have no tactical nous and no self-belief. As much as it pains me to say it, I fear that the time may have come for a new man to take the wheel of our great club.

Francis

Wenger should leave when the cheers are loudest…..giving us the same excuses every now and then disgusting to say the least….and with Dortmund in midweek I only hoped for best my beloved arsenal…can’t stand these foul mouth chelsh*t fans in my neighborhood….

Charles Surguy

Wenger’s stubborness and inability to modernise his tactics and delegate roles within the club is costing my club dearly. His way of playing was at one point revolutionary however we MUST accept that if we are to progress as a club and challenge for the title and progress in the CL we have to obtain a TACTICAL MANAGER. The utter uselessness of Wenger’s style of play is encapsulated perfectly in Merson’s description of him as “tactically clueless”. Kronke is not a football fan and is only in for the money and with Wenger qualifying for the CL every year and… Read more »

baronnapier

Unfortunately I think what you’ll see happen is they (more Kroenke, less Usmanov) will happily let Wenger see out his term. Greater chances for CL qualification (if he goes now, we will most likely have to endure a Moyes-season or two restructuring), no cost of breaking a contract, no cost of bringing in a Klopp who will bring new signings to suit their own approach, and ultimately little risk except for minor fan mutiny. I am a true Gooner but let’s not fool ourselves, we will put up with this situation more than say for example, a mob of St.Pauli… Read more »

and my chelski workmate doesn´t even make fun of me, it´s so depressing that even manU is above us

Lee from Hampshire

What’s incredibly depressing is that fans of other clubs actually feel sorry for us and don’t make fun these days. It’s so obvious about how we will play and how to beat us that teams like Swansea and Southampton are now a genuine threat. When Per rushed upfield in the second half it felt obvious that we would be punished for it. It’s Sunday league football and despite the team saying “we will learn” and “we will do better” we just don’t change how we play. We can all see what’s needed and even Wenger admitted he could see we… Read more »

The Ghost of Paul Robinson

As much as he can be blamed for a lot of things, the team went out today and controlled the game. The coach can’t do much when a guy like Wilshere can’t just stick it in the net, or square it for a tap in.

I’m not saying hes not to blame, but the buck has to stop with some of the senior members of the team today who couldn’t convert simple fucking chances.

rossi88

Totally agree. Thought we looked good today. Closed down the best ive seen for a while. Won it back quick and thought ox and jack played well. Arteta too. Just couldnt score our chances. Jack should of squared that ball ffs. That was what we WERE about. Fancy football and slide pass for simple goals. Wenger cant control players application on pitch. Just such a bitter fucking pill to swallow…….more like trying to swallow an old boot……with van persies shit and piss in it. I really dont know what to say any more. Would a change.of manager of converted the… Read more »

LovelyArse

Spot on.

Az Ahmed

The problem is not what Wilshere did, but why he did what he did. Why did we not convert or chances? This has been going on for far too long and it’s a symptom for a deep lying cause which is our team is trained to pass the ball around but not trained as it should be to finish and be clinical. It’s also the mindset. Arsenal is not instilled with the winning mindset and that is the manager’s fault. He needs to go now!

Pete

How long?

Arsenal had the best open-play chance conversion last season….

assistantref

Yep, this game is the one game of the season that hasn’t turned out well for us that I don’t think you can really blame Wenger for. You can’t blame Wenger for their first goal with an offside, a foul, and then a ridiculously lucky deflection. I mean it was just a complete cosmic joke. Not one, not two, but THREE things wrong with it.

And at that point the whole game obviously changed. Without that cosmic middle finger, the game is totally different and everybody’s praising Wenger instead.

Az Ahmed

Always blaming the ref, being unlucky etc etc. A winning team creates its own luck and nullifies the influence of the ref

Pete

On average, over a season, yes. Not on a game by game basis.

This game, we were unlucky

James Bernthal

Sorry fella – but you’re wrong. How is wengers fault that Jack can’t finish a simple one on one ?
How is it wengers fault that none of the forward players bar Alexis have got the nerve, composure and finess to put the ball either side of the keeper ??
I’m so tired of this Wenger out nonsense. You should be pissed at the players – they’re the ones not performing.

Francis

James,what does a coach do to non-performing players?….

James B

I understand Francis. I hear you. But I’m so tired of this wenger out nonsense. I clearly get that something isn’t right with the team. But it’s not like he’s out there kicking balls. We have Ozil and we have Alexis because of the guy. We have stability. We always comes good and rights the ship. Once our team gets back to full shape and formation we will do fantastic just you watch. Today was a disaster – but are you kidding me Jack you can’t finish that fcking chance from 3 yards ???? Not managers fault.

Sheffield Goon

Perhaps it’s because he has the manager’s words ringing in his ears and he doesn’t know what the fuck he’s meant to do… “It is linked sometimes with your preferential vision as well. We all have preferential vision and sometimes players see better on their right and sometimes players see better on the left. So when you have better right vision and you play on the left, you see the whole pitch.” This is his latest amazing insight and why he is going to push Welbeck out wide now Giroud is back. Otherwise known as the ramblings of a mad… Read more »

We have Ozil and Sanchez because we have a lot of money, therefore we can pay their transfer fee and wages, they’re not here through charity, it’s because they’re getting paid the going rate. We have a lot of money because of the fans, not the manager!

It is the managers fault that our players can’t finish because he coaches them. Technical and mental failings are his job to correct which he consistantly has failed to do. Hence it keeps on happening.

Truth hurts

Replace them

Mpls

Works for the Sp*ds, right? Oh.

Fireman Sam

Er that’s what he said mate. You’ve not read the comment before replying to it?

BTW I agree with both of you. Whining bitching fans going on about Wenger Out can fuck right off. We totally dominated Manure tonight but things just didn’t go our way. In this particular case, it’s cunt all to do with Wenger.

Fireman Sam

(doh that comment was @jamesB

DirtyAlexis

It’s always the manager’s fault, even more so with Wenger because he has so much control over the club.

He buys the players, he trains the players, he picks the team, he chooses their tactics, he motivates them, he even tells them what to eat. It’s his team and his responsibility. He’s doing it all badly and has been for ages. Apart from the food part, I don’t know about that (though you have to wonder…)

Mpls

Fuck that. The shots didn’t go. That’s a tired, predictable, lazy blame purely looking for thumbs from all of the torch and pitchfork crowd.

We bossed them. No shooting boots- which IS a problem. But that’s it.

Fuck this lazy bandwagon Wenger Out shite.

this aint FIFA bitches

Yeah lazy bandwagon, it only took 10 years to roll around.

You fucking knob jockey.

superanderslimpar

Average for 10 years? Spurs, Liverpool & Everton would kill for that sort of “average” Having said that, something has to change about our in ability to keep the back door shut. With that back four today, if you say before the game that Utd have 2 shots on target, youd bite my hand off. The fact that score two just makes it enormously frustrating. We need 2 players in January. A proper centre half & a disciplined midfielder. Reckon you can get them for £25- 30m. Get them, & we finish 2nd or 3rd & make a decent defence… Read more »

Mpls

The fact is the only thing about Wenger’s gameplan that didn’t work was the sticking the ball in the back of the net bit, which he’s got no blame for given those chances.

And rolling the last 10 years of being house poor into it is daft.

So go jockey your own knob, if you’re not already.

Az Ahmed

Delusional. Sentiment is clouding your judgement. Wenger has been declining for years. It seems you support Wenger FC and not Arsenal FC. #WengerOut want or team to win because we know or team is good enough. Our squad is better than Chelskis. The only difference is we don’t have the right man to manage the team.

Tactically clueless. Negligent in the transfer market. He does not have what it takes to win.

Must go now

Pete

Tactically not great I can accept(ish), but Wenger is a fucking boss in the transfer market.

Last 10 years he has spent less than QPR, Stoke, Sunderland, Spurs, Villa, Liverlol, Manure, Man Shitty and (half a billion!! less than) Chelski.

THAT is why we are ok financially now, THAT is why we have Ozil and Sanchez. THAT is why have a new stadium and are still a top 4 team.

rajesh

Its his fault coz he bought/trained all these players, isn’t it. So if players can’t score, can’t defend whom should we blame. We trust in Wenger to build team which can score, defend and win matches / titles… Can we trust him to build such teams anymore?? He never had killer instinct but was blesses by invincibles. That’s all.. Look at klopp, mourinho, ferguson, van gaal they all give titty twister to players who don’t perform. What is Wenger doing about Ramsey or merteseckar? Anyways I hope you got the point, I am frustrated for last many years and Wenger… Read more »

There are certainly downsides to not being ruthless to under-performing players. But you can’t ignore the upsides of a protective approach.

Just look at Ramsey last year. That is all down to Wenger. (almost) any other manager would have given up on him.

This is actually the worst thing… A defeat like this… With literally no one to blame.. None to vent anger on .. Just bad luck.. !

Remember the invincibles

Bad luck? Did you see what Arteta was doing in the second goal, is he trying to intercept? Is he trying to put a tackle in, Is he trying to position himself to pressure the attacker? Where is he? What’s he doing? Can’t understand it. What on earth was Mertesacker doing? Was he playing as center half of center forward. Certainly he’s a better center forward. He had given up. In his head he was already thinking about telling he media ‘we got sucker punched when we threw men forward’. What a coward. The manger is and the team is.… Read more »

Remember the invincibles

It’s all in in public interest really.

Mpls

Fuck that too. Arteta showed us what we are missing without him today.

this aint FIFA bitches

No Arteta half showed what we are really lacking which is a massive upgrade on him in the DEFENSIVE midfield position.

Not particularly blaming Arteta as he is playing to the best of his ability. Unfortunately that ability is not good enough to compete against top (also mediocre) quality players.

MPLS

Anyone can change the context. The comment was a response to the poster bashing Arteta’s performance on the day.

Kevin Weaver

He’s already stayed too long.

Kevin Weaver

How can’t you say bad luck? Another woeful bit of goalkeeping from Szczesney. A terrible miss from Wilshere who was lucky not to be red carded. What did Cazorla do when he came on. Lack of depth in key positions. Plenty of people to blame, but the biggest culprit has to be our £8m a year manager.

misog

i agree mate, although wenger is on his last life he can not be blamed for todays result,we should have been 4 up at half time. i know there will be alot that dont agree but i think we were very unlucky to lose tonight

Now every team knows arsenal are vulnerable on the break…so they sit down let arsenal have all the possessions because we’ve ten players who are desperately searching for goals leaving a goalie to defend 60yards alone is a suicide mission and we seems not find any solutions for it….arsenal is bigger than just fighting to make the numbers to the champions league and everything else is alright with the club….believing in the intuitions of players alone will not help a bigger club like arsenal…let’s hoped for better performance in midweek…#afcforlife…

Inmaturity was what cost us to lost today..I don’t know when we’ll have the spirit to beat ManU!!

Classic Arsenal, and I agree with what Wenger said completely. It will work for us.

Also thank god Giroud is back, I know we all love having Welbeck who isn’t slow as shit but atleast Giroud’s a goalscorer. Chambers was great today, as was Gibbs bar the own goal. Imagine supporting United, how embarrassing were they.

Chamberlain was our best player today. For some reason I remain upbeat!

Mpls

Thank you.

Mpls

This is the insight after we dominated the game and our players couldn’t hit a bong at a University party?

Witoldo

Such a typical Arsenal result–dominate the entire game, then go down 1-0 on a comical defensive mix-up, which leads to more pressing and a breakaway goal against. We even had two injuries on the day too. A perfectly prototypical Arsenal performance.

Not sure how anyone can blame Wenger here. We bossed the game, our setup neutralized Manure’s attacking threat until that fateful collision, and he really didn’t have a choice regarding the subs. Just unlucky really. A lot of these strange results in the Premier League this year.

Also, van Persie looks past it, doesn’t he?

grannydanger

stop please…just stop

unlucky for a reason…how many times have we had such calamitous results…that 2-2 birmingham draw…to a certain extent you make your own luck…we pushed it too far and it all spiralled…

Bendtner's Ego

“Not sure how anyone can blame Wenger here.”

You mean the part about throwing our 6’6 ent up the field to act as a 3rd forward (when we were only one-nill down) is purely Mertesacker’s fault?

WengersNoseHair

Is this the same manager who never says anything from the touchline that threw Mertesacker forward?

You know, looking past the actual bullshit in your post, that is.

modific

Bottomline is the players play the way the manager trains them to play.

Take off your rose tinted glasses, take a deep breath and smell the coffee…it’s strangely liberating!

WengersNoseHair

Is this the same manager who doesn’t tell the players what to do when they’re running around like headless chickens?

I’ve seen manure score that goal against us time and time again and still we never learn. What is the common denominator? He has to go. Time for the board to grow a pair or wenger to do the decent thing. Does he have the decent thing in him? Doubt it. £8m reasons per year why he wouldn’t. Ridiculous situation we have ourselves in.

this aint FIFA bitches

the common denominator is a slow DM treading water to get back, Denilson Arteta
Time to get a real player for that position.

PS this was the worst Man U team we have ever faced in the premier league & still lost

grannydanger

I can imagine what every manager in the league would be doing in practice when they face Arsenal: practice 2 vs 1 with your fastest attackers against the slowest defender…just to make sure they won’t mess it up because you know that scenario will come up…hope to see more Wenger Out signs every game..

Mpls

Gee I hope so too. Wouldn’t that be just the funnest way to take in a match. Frothing at the mouth with bandwagon vitriol.

Alexstratz

I think until Kos and Debuchy are back, we will never win a game. Teams will just be like “lol who cares if they dominate us or they’ve just scored. We just need 1 chance to score against these muppets.”

Wenger as always fails to see the actual issue. This season is done and I don’t think anything to change unless wenger changes himself. No plan B. How in the world cazrola still gets a chance to play time and again is beyond me. Wenger clearly cannot steer this team if he continues to fail to see the talent in podolski and Campbell and use them. I feel a lot of the reaction is because we have no item on a list or player to blame and vent. Watching the game, I felt we did the right things and had the right intensity to kill them off. Eventually the profligacy came back to bite us. I honestly think there were positives. The goal we conceded was down to a heavy dose of bad luck and then on, we spiraled out of control. Odd thing is that when we led the league for so long last season, it seemed like a large part of the reason for that was that we had learned that there were no prizes for “dominating games”. For the first time ever under Arsene, we looked happy to cede possession to the opposition, soak up their sterile domination, then take our chances and win the game. It was working and for a short, sweet while, it looked like we had learned something. So why have we reverted to type and why is Arsene looking so bemused that it doesn’t… Read more »

Because our stable defensive platform from last year has splintered into 500,000 fragments: injured Koscielny, jaded post-WC Mertesacker, and absence of defensively reliable Sagna. Inverting the triangle in midfield also hasn’t helped our defensive stability.

Hi-brid

Even more reason to set the team up to be disciplined, patient and keep it’s shape, rather than run around like headless chickens leaving a makeshift defence completely exposed at every available opportunity.

Mpls

We had the upgrade to Bench-sitter Sagna.

King Henry the xiv

There was nothing unlucky about the defeat. We had our chances, we didn’t take them. United knew they couldn’t match us so they resorted to sitting back and countering. That is how you know a good coach; tactics and game management. Despite losing Shaw early in the game, we still couldn’t expose a defence worse than the one stuffed by Leicester City. Year in year out we witness the same failings yet we make excuses for the man at the centre of it all; Arsene Wenger. Nothing unlucky? The own goal was the flukiest shit I’ve ever seen. If Gibbs just laid there motionless the ball probably would’ve sailed wide. And while you can blame Wilshire for missing that sitter, there’s an element of bad luck there too. No chance is 100% and no player converts all of his chances. If De Gea doesn’t get a foot on Ox’s shot, or Alexis’s header doesn’t go right at the goalie, we’re probably not talking about any of this. I’m not saying the team or manager are blameless. Same old story. Our boys never learn. Three games in a row they abandoned their defensive duties… I can’t figure out the position of Mertesacker on the field. He was more of a CF than CB. He even wrote stupid message in the match day programme note. He failed to set an example. All in all I will blame Wenger. I’ve said all along….in fact over 2 years that the man need to go. He has tried his best for Arsenal. He should resign. We need a change… A change of leadership!

Has Wenger ever criticized his players publicly? Nope, he’s never done that. How can you expect players to react positively when you don’t even show them that you’re fucking angry with their performance. Wenger doesn’t even know that he has a problem and it’s really sad. He’s delusional for thinking that he’ll get a different result from the same inept tactics that hasn’t worked.

This was literally the worst UTD side in ~15 years we just played. They had 2 defenders ~20 years old and Ashley Young played left wing back. Ashley ‘Divey’ Fucking YOUNG. And we couldn’t score until the 93rd minute. It’s shameful. When Arsenal played a back 4 of similar quality we lost 8-2. UTD does and Arsenal lose. It is inexcusable. This game should piss you off as a fan. There is litreally 1 team this year. Chelsea. City are too old and UTD are fucking trash. Yet despite that UTD are 4th City are 2nd and Arsenal are 7th.… Read more »

It was the same shit we’ve seen for the last 10 years. That was a youth team back 5 with Ashley fucking Young playing wing back. We played a similar team in the back and shipped 8. The mentality was wrong from the off. Arsenal squadered so many chances in the first have the defeat was inevitable because ~Arsenal~. This shit is infuriating. You can see it so often it is a question of mentality not skill. Look I play hockey…you pull shit like these players do you get yelled at. A lot. Yet Arsene is happy to treat these… Read more »
