West Brom 0-1 Arsenal – player ratings

Two wins in a row! Ok, it wasn’t 100% convincing but at this point it’s all about results and getting the points under our belt.

We’ll take a 1-0 to the Arsenal any day. Anyway, here are the ratings. Remember you can add your own ratings and comments below.

Welcome back Kos….different outfit with you back there!

Bolarinwa Mayowa

Also welcome back Santi

fabulous

I was thinking the same thing, Kos back and surprise surprise, we can actually fucking defend a 1 goal lead. That’s where I think Wenger messed it up in the summer, not making defensive reinforcements. That’s hurt us big time in the few games Kos was out injured, and at this point it’s possible, but really hard to see us clawing our way back to a title challenge. The positive is, if we’re frank, this is possibly the strongest offense we’ve had in a while, and Wenger achieved that in 2 seasons of “having money to spend”. The negative is… Read more »

MPLS

Didn’t take long for this thread to go to shit.

Lay off the Wenger bashing and let’s talk about the topic. The win and how the lads performed.

fabulous

And I’m sure it will go shit the next time we lose a big match and people like you go absolutely missing. Let’s ignore the elephant in the room cause we won against fucking West Brom. If you actually care to read my comment in full I’m suggesting every Arsenal fan to stand behind the team atm because frankly we don’t have a choice. How long do we give the man time? By season’s end in my opinion. If you got problems with that by all means discuss it rather than hiding away and pretend things are ok when its… Read more »

bodiroga

Ok my friend, thank you for your opinion. I dont agree with you. Can you please now leave us alone to enjoy our team and support them or are we gonna have you causing negativity every week ? Making your opinion known is one thing, being a negative bastard intentionally and for no other reason than ego/agenda is not a very gooner thing to do now is it?

MPLS

Go Missing? Hide? I’m not about to call for a new manager every time I’m not happy, if that’s what you mean. Especially after a win, following the win against Dortmund that showed marked improvement. We didn’t buy the defenders we need. I agree. Not good. We got it. Discussed ad nauseum on every post. At least the ones about AW are on topic. This particular post happens to be about the players we DO have. But somehow only three comments down we are straight back to AW. I appreciate that you bring a measure of reasoning to it, but… Read more »

MPLS

Go missing? Hide away? No. My opinion does not match yours. I’m obviously not hiding it. I probably should have made my point in a more polite fashion, so I get throwing it back. Fair enough. I fully appreciate the portions on topic, whether I agree or not. Most of them I do. But it is quite frustrating -especially after a win- that by the third comment on a piece rating our players’ performances, that we are yet again suddenly talking about the WengerOut bit. I do appreciate the actual consideration you express, which is far more than we frequently… Read more »

I love this 1-0 to the Arsenal! more please! COYG

Gunner from the South

Siyabonga Santi! (Thank you Santi – in Zulu).

Great encouraging performance from our key players today. Santi was immense, Sanchez buzzed around, Welbeck I think he will become a great Signing and a Striker for us – Dare I say Ian Wright-ish.

A bit uncomfortable again at the end, but I don’t complain. Great confidence booster.

COYG!

Ultimate Gooner

Ian Wright is a pure finisher. Welbeck is an all-rounder

Let’s hate on those fans for wanting their team to be successful! Arsenal is a big club but in terms of the demands on the manager we are not larger than Tottenham Hotsp*rs. Only at Arsenal is it acceptable to lose top-game after topgame. You need to put it in to a larger perspective than just one game. Arsene Wenger’s arsenal goes around in circle’s. It’s similar stories every year. As a life long arsenal fan I cannot even describe how sick I am of the acceptance of Mediocricity. After a loss most arsenal fans will be wenger out but… Read more »

Arsene goes around in circles? Have you seen Tottenham mate?! I rather go in circles than drop out.

rix

We have just come out of the period where we had no money to spend so that point is quite relevant but really we got the money to spend now so there is no more excuse. He did an OK job with the funds he had, but if you take in to consideration of the massive amount of money that was still spent it is NOT amazing as some fans like to call it. I do enjoy when we win, I celebrate everytime we win. You know if he would have managed to keep some of our best players we… Read more »

There are so many bullshit statements in that I don’t even know where to start.

Ok, Podolski.

He did not score as many as Giroud. 16 is not equal to 22. He does not play lone striker for Germany. Ever.

I’m not bothering with the rest because it’s of the same quality.

Fireman Sam

We just won. Try and enjoy it.

rix

I enjoy wins as much as the next person and I do celebrate it. But wenger deserves criticism on a lot of fronts, saying otherwise is just deluded bollocks. As for being happy about a win against West Bromwich, isn’t that a team that we are miles ahead? Besides there is not much to celebrate especially not if you look at the table which will prove that we are out of the title race already. It is yet again a season where we find ourselves in a battle for 4th place. A lot of Arsenal fans wants to see us… Read more »

You guys are thick. You people refer to our last decade as a failure when in reality we were overachieving, repaying our stadium, and you would moan for not beating the sheiks ,the glazers and abramovic. Youre mad. Sadly, thats the level of intelligence we have to deal with here. This is only the second year we can spend a little money and we got another world class player in sanchez. We won a trophy. Don’t forget Stewart Robson. WOBs like to point out Klopp built Dortmund up with meagre means neglecting what Wenger has done for Arsenal on a greater scale. We are a self made club. These same geezers will have you with Wenger inheriting success bc of Graham’s defense. Who is Kolo Toure and Sol Campbell??? Same geezers will spew nonsense about how Alexis is carrying the club and at the same time say Wenger is allergic to spending. Who bought Alexis? how much did he cost us? Or how about them crying and getting all defensive like ‘im allowed my opinion, lets debate’….

They dont like it? Ok its simple, stop paying, stop going to games….but no they want to take front stage like barbies and ENFORCE their opinion on others…..hmmmmm…agenda? ..someone paying them ?

Eem

Your retarded

EB

…writes the genius that used “your” instead of “you’re.”

Man Manny

You can just feel the confidence level rise. I thought the manager would have pulled out Alexis for a needed rest to avoid doing a ‘Giroud’ of last season all over again.

Trez

“Avoid a giroud”?? Alexis has already done more than giroud did all season. Alexis SCORES against BIG teams.

MPLS

Love Alexis and think he’s been the absolute highlight of the season so far but that’s a ridiculous statement. What have you got against our leading scorer last season?

santori

Giroud scored 26 goals all competitions last season. FYI

Trez

22 goals!!…22 goals!!

Trez

And in how many matches if i may ask??

john

Nothing against him, he’s just average. Comfortably the worst first choice striker we’ve had for 20+ years

Trez

He is a better finisher than chamakh and probably bendtner, i just hate the way people hype up his stats and what not. He’s hardworking and all, but he’s average. If people supported gervinho the way they did with him, gervinho would’ve probably turned out great for us. Truth is he’s plain average; not solid or “underrated” till he proves otherwise(hopefully does a “drogba” and makes me eat my words)

Trez

Sorry didn’t read it properly…of course he is. Doesn’t compare to henry, rvp, heck even adebawhore(hate that guy). He’d be 2nd or 3rd choice in our previous teams.

john

Or Smith or Wrighty, you’d have to go back to the mid-eighties to find a team he’d get into

utty

lol have him over that absolute cunt adebayor any day of the week

Trez

Because he didn’t show up against big teams last year and people brush it off because he’s “hfb”. He gets a pass compared to other players of his ability all because he’s “hfb”. A player should be judged by talent, not looks.

MPLS

If you take a peek back at the comment boards, nobody brushed off any inadequacies he may have. He gets no free passes. He was one of the most insulted and abused players in the squad.

Nobody said he’s better than our previous top choice strikers. Does that mean he should be insulted?

And don’t worry, we’re all jealous of how handsome he is.

Trez

If good looks guaranteed titles; not only would i be jealous of him, i’d get a tattoo of giroud on my back. Unfortuately it doesn’t or beckham would’ve been one of the greatest of all time.

Trez

P.S Alexis has already scored more than half of the goals giroud scored last season and we’re not even in dec.

MPLS

Giroud: 13 mil
Alexis: 30 mil? Don’t recall exactly, but you get the point.

john

What should price have to do with it? Giroud isn’t of the required standard for Arsenal and at no point in the last 25 years would he have got in the team. Thats before both Wenger arrived at the club and before we became the most expensive team in Europe to watch!!

MPLS

Ok, let’s set a 15 mil cap on transfers then.

john

if you want, but Alan Smith, Ian Wright, Anelka, Henry, and Van Persie all cost less than that and were all considerably better than Giroud

Trez

Sturridge:10m
Bony: 12m
Both had better stats than giroud.

MPLS

For fuck’s sake John, what year did we buy those strikers? Really? 11m for Henry in 1999. Yes, the 1999 of Prince fame. How many actual seasons did we get out of van Princess?

Sturridge was a good buy. Until Suarez left. And Bony? A few more goals, but a fraction of the assists and link up play. How do you imagine he would do in a defensively packed zone outside the 18 playing for a team that likes to keep possession and the ball on the floor?

Cheddya

Just a quick aside: Those fan’s holding up the “Thanks for the memories Arsene, but it’s time to say goodbye” banner. I can understand the frustration and there’s nothing wrong with holding that opinion, but I think it’s pretty clueless that up after a really good performance where we’ve gone away from home, in an early KO, picked up a clean sheet and pushed on from Dortmund that we can’t just support the team and put our differences to the side. All we’ve spoken about is the need for results to improve and I’ve got no issue with fans online,… Read more »

john

Quite frankly i don’t think anyone on a internet message board has the right to criticise the Arsenal away support!!

They are the die hard fans that travel up and down the country, they are one’s who spend their hard earned cash paying Wenger and the players wages, they are the heart beat of the club not Wenger or anyone else. Most of them predate Wenger by decades in thier support for the club and they’re not going to stop going because of him.

If they’re not happy they have every right to let him know about it!!

Cheddya

Well apologies that my living in Scotland means I can’t afford to travel down to every game. I think like most on this board, I would be at every game if I could a) afford it and b) manage to do so. These people are not infallible. Yes they’re paying money to support the club, but when fans are racist, sexist or violent it reflects badly on the club does it not? I’m not suggesting this is cut from the same cloth – that would be ridiculous – but I still think they have a responsibility to support the team… Read more »

Mootilated

I believe that the banner is the only way for them to voice their opinion. No board or manager is going to read a facebook post or an arseblog comment, so they release the banners. Sure, it may not be the opinion of everyone but The Emirates has proved to be a divided place in the last few years and each and every person who pays to be there has a right to express what they feel should be done, right or wrong.

MPLS

It wasn’t at the emirates.

john

But you like most people on this board aren’t at all the games that’s the problem. You haven’t built up the resentment of years of being ripped off and lied to. You haven’t been paying the wages of a man who has failed to learn basic lessons, and has put player development before team development. You haven’t been paying to watch a team in a constant state of work in progress. At some point Arsene Wenger has to held account as to why he hasn’t built a team ready to challenge meaningfully for the major trophies today, not tomorrow or… Read more »

MPLS

Two major assumptions here:
1. That everyone attending matches shares your opinion.
2. That anyone anywhere believes a banner saying ‘go away, we don’t like you’ is “polite”.

MoNk

I thought the keeper getting a hand to it made the header even more awesome! You could see the power on the header that Foster was not able to keep it out..

gammhunn

I agree. It’s just that blogs has a thing against goals scored when the keeper gets a hand on it. I think he would approve of a goal as the most beatuful ever scored if: (The keeper got a hand to it) Just after saving a bag of drowning puppies, Per Mertesacker runs on to the pitch and scores a thundering header to clinch the league title at WHL, he still holds one of the puppies he just saved, and just as the cameras zoom in on the celebrations, the puppy licks the BFGs face. Just as this is happening, blogs… Read more »

They want us to buy the next flash manager like AVB or Ponchentino or Redknap or Juande Ramos etc. Anything is better than a minimum finish of 4th or better and 15 years in the CL last 16.

Spurs is the way forward of course. They show ambition like Liverpool pissing 100m away on players. They change managers every next season, they always finish above the Arsenal and get into the CL.;)

Az Ahmed

Mediocre teams look at teams below themselves such as Spurs. Ambitious teams look at teams above them and figure out a way to get ahead of them. Stop looking down and start looking up.

john

Some people are inherent losers and have to constantly look at others. I can’t understand why myself because frankly i’m too busy trying to be the best i can. Some people don’t want to better themselves but would rather drag others down into the hole that they live in unfortunately. It must be a weird place to live

Primislas

Arsenal can attract any proven top manager with Wenger’s salary. Ambitious managers wouldn’t be content coming here just to scrape for the 4th though.

Rectum Spectrum

An extra +1 for everyone. After an immense team performance all over the pitch against Dortmund the squad basically went out and tried the same again against west brom. Pressing high, defending in numbers. Another huge shift put in. Wednesday took a lot of effort and you could see it take its tole as the game went on yesterday. But we always put pressure on the ball, and always defended as a team. 3 points after the effort put in against Dortmund is immense. Jesus even Alexis looked tired, to show how much the team must’ve been pushed. Fantastic result.… Read more »

loose_cannon

Where was the Real Cazorla before this week? And what has he done with that impostor?! Defence was better today, though we need to work on that offside trap (and personally I never like it when Mertersacker is even close to the halfway line, it gives me vertigo). You could tell that they’ve been working on it in training though, one full back staying when the other goes up, defending as unit and Flamini was excellent too. Still needs work, but at least something is happening behind the seasons. Finally, a word on Ramsey. Another solid performance going forwards and… Read more »

Gooner Inside the Beltway

As a Gooner, three points and a bit more “righting of the ship” is really all that matters. If we are going to do ratings, however, feel like it is important to keep in mind that we were one dodgy offside call and/or one crossbar away from calamity. Santi was lively, illusive, and always looking to attack–MoTM for me as well–but sure would be good to see him get his shooting boots back. Might have rated Per a bit above the rest of the back line (7.5 or 8); he was such a reassuring presence back there. Agree that Alexis… Read more »

Dick Swiveller

True about the offside, but it’s probably fair to point out that it was an offside Fellaini pushing gibbs into Szcesny that cost us a point and possibly three last week.

When I think about the number of games I’ve said to myself ‘if the ref did his job then we’d have won, but you should never count on deicisons to win you the game’, I tend to think that these decisions matter less than we think. Unless we’re talking 49 games unbeaten style reffing.

MawuenaCosta

Koscielny made our defence stable

Freddys Hairdye

Santi’s thriving from playing back through the middle again. It opens up options for him both left and right instead of only really having the choice to run at full backs. Will be interesting to see what happens once Ozil is back because I don’t think that option to pop one of them (Cazorla/Ozil) out on the left will be there anymore with Walcott, Welbeck and Alexis competing for those wide spots.

Ramesh

I have been wondering how much incidents influence our assessement of matches and players. This Arsenal team didn’t play badly against United at all. The first goal we let in against them was a bit freakish. And because we were attacking to equalize we let in the second as well. And then of course all hell broke loose :). Whereas in this game imagine if the West Brom header had gone in. The game would have been a draw and our assessments would be completely different. It’s just a very fine line. Though in general I agree that league formats… Read more »

loose_cannon

Yeah, agree with this. The most frustrating thing about United though was that we didn’t need to go gung-ho the way we did after conceding. We still had time. But we lost our heads and sucked right into there predictable trap. But you’re right, we did play well against them and the result massively coloured perceptions of the performance

Heroldgoon

Cazorlas mojo is fucking back. That’s the highlight for me. The shimmyz he kept doing the entire match you wouldn’t have seen from him afew weeks ago. Lest you forget, This is Santi Cazorla a guy who on form is right up there. Now lets get Walcott and Debuchy back to full fitness and make this a freaking party!

assistantref

Yeah it is great to see his confidence back enough to see him do those little dribbles that tackle advantage of the fact he’s about 3 and a half feet tall and has a center of gravity about at the level of most players’ knees. Watching him totally outwit and outmaneuver a defender or midfielder twice his size is a thing of beauty.

chembe

On to the next one .3points ,3 important points

MT

Wenger needs to have a word with Ramsey. Especially in the first half I think we had such a low possession rate just because of him. He was just standing in the last third and waiting for a ball. His movement was bad and he should come to ball but he rarely did so Flamini passes were mostly backwards and half of attacking displays were direct. In the second half Cazorla and even Sanchez played more deep so that is why we had more possession. Ramsey was also too much in the penalty box. And I don’t think Gibbs was… Read more »

Seriously, whats up with Aaron Ramsey, someone needs to get the point across to him. The desire to get goals is obviously important for a footballer, but comeon, he needs to realise his run of goals last season was from playing in a rather different set up. His overeager efforts in getting forward is hurting the current set up. Many of you guys said he has kind of curb his hunger over the last few games, but for me its still evidently there. Its only because we were not punished by it, in terms of conceding goals (dortmund came close… Read more »

AFC_SYD

If thats the case how do you explain that he topped successful tackles (5) against Dortmund and covered the most ground from both teams against them then? I haven’t seen the stats from the West Brom game yet but I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw something similar. His decision making is off – that much is true. He’s in search of a goal. But I’d say starting the United game, and definitely in the past two games against Dortmund and West Brom he’s been getting back to the Ramsey we know…doing a lot of defensive dirty work, and getting… Read more »

Ramsey is starting to get the simple things right which isnt saying much, but when hes off his game he can look very awkward. No problem with the shooting (didnt he have a ridiculous % of goals per shot last year?)…and weve been moaning about the lack of shots for years. The 90 yard effort at the end was pushing it though!

Wenger – 0

for not giving us 1 minute of Rosicky 🙁

Conchetumadre

I think Cazorla needs one goal to achieve his phenomenal performances.
Welbeck always dangerous, finally got a deserved goal.
Geroud getting better n better.
Alexis, although tired, can deliver at any moment(irreplaceable)
Finally, our defenders able to keep our lead.
Ospina has lost to Martinez.
A win,is a win.

alexis' shorts

Ospina hasn’t had a chance to lose a spot, but Martinez has been adequate in his performances. He’s done nothing wrong but hasn’t been called to really save our hides either the way Szcz tends to be every game he plays. I think it’s a good balance though to have 3 keepers who can handle a top flight game. Save for last year with Viviano on loan, we have only had 2 keepers (Woj and Fab) we had any level of confidence in. I’m sure Martinez understands he’s in the squad due to injuries but he can take confidence that… Read more »

Well done to get the win today. This team has always looked on the verge of turning things around but never actually has. Hopefully controlling the past 2 games and taking the 3 points today is the type of progress that sees us only taking steps forward. Making sure our defense is not exposed has been key to us staying in games the full 90 because our skill will always get us chances on goal but we can’t abandon the other side of the ball. Also, I’m really liking that our 3 most forward players work so hard for the… Read more »

I might have missed an update so can someone tell me if the bonus ratings gone forever? It would be a shame if they were. A performance rating of Chamakh’s hair or Grant Holt’s pie eating were always a welcome addition to this feature.

Jibzi

Solid performance today and nice to see Kos back, with Debuchy to come very soon. It is quite interesting with the GK situation because Martinez had very little to do in the last 2 games but either him or Ospina now have to put massive pressure on Szczesny because IMO that’s the only way we can progress with the obvious additions required in midfield and defence. Also good to see our defensive shape being restored and while we got a bit lucky with the Berahino offside, I am still convinced Giroud should have had a pen after seeing 5 replays… Read more »

Maybe not better but Wenger should be given credit for strengthening a weak part of the squad. Injuries aside, we now have Szsc, Ospina and Martinez, all excellent and all young!!! Whoever is coaching the keepers should take a bow. Also, Santi has been coming good for several games now. Giroud scored 22 goals for arsenal last season , not 26.

He scored 4 for France , making 26 in total .

I’ve seen this twice on here today and its set my stats OCD off !

Haha

Trez

Please let him know. 22 in 51 matches and he makes it seem like giroud is god.
Bony scored 25 in 48 matches and he plays for swansea.
Adding goals for national teams just to make his stats look good.

MPLS

How many assists did Bony have? How many others scored for Swansea? What is their attacking strategy? How do they utilize their strikers? Where did they finish in the league?

X is more than Y is not the end of the story.

Paul

Well played nothing to complain about COYG!

Nasri's missing chinbone

Genuinely embarrassed by some of the wenger out crowd holding up a banner calling for him to go. Be careful what you wish for, anyone would think you’re west ham fans in disguise. Couldn’t give a fig if this gets me 200 dislikes, it’s the truth.

santori

They poison the atmosphere for us.

Such negativity in the squad, may as will give up now. If the squad were made up of such brittle gumption, we would not have won the FA cup against Hull.

Plenty of season left. Get behind the gaffer and the team. Take a page from Dortmund fans. 2 nil down and still cheering the fans on. Much of the Emirates crowd resemble people watching tennis these days.

All that banner does is put things further on knife’s edge.

Rezatron

Welbeck soared through the air like a swan to put that one away. Lovely.

Arsepedant

Leapt like a salmon, he did. There was one replay where you could see him face on, and that little bit of film should be in every youth coach’s handbook, as a textbook example of how to take a header. Eyes on the ball, hands forward, yank the arms back as you power the head forward, hit the ball with the centre of your forehead, never closing your eyes. It was a thing of beauty.

SFGiants

There should be a rating for Mertescielny. The improvement in defense is noticeable.

Wengeroutfanscansuckmyballs

Those holding up a banner at todays game are an absolute disgrace to this club. We’ve just won ffs, and beaten Dortmund. If you can’t support your team, don’t go to the game, don’t support this club, go and support chelsea, or man city, fickle f*$ks…..This attitude as well affects the team, the fans should be the 12th man, the emirates should be a F*&kin fortress, we should be singing the place down, believing in this team whether they’re playing badly, whether they win, lose or draw. We’re supporters after all.

Fireman Sam

Totally with you there mate.

Whatever you think of Wenger, he’s not going anywhere any time soon so it’s pointless negativity which is only gonna hurt us even if you do want a new manager.

Arsemoose

2 more thumbs up!

santori

Be careful for what you wish for. We may not hit the heights we promise but Wenger has assembled a very good and promising team. We may not have acheived as much as we could have over recent seasons but a 4th spot finish and 15 seasons in last 16 of CL is a very high minimum standard to keep up even with your best players being bought up. You wonder what the Wenger out Brigade are smoking. We beat Dortmund and they’d say well that team isn’t playing well at the moment. At the same time, when you point out that Dortmund are lying bottom of the Bundesliga, they’d say but its a quality team in Europe. Simply put, Wenger has put together a very good team for us which has not hit the heights they are capable of. People who say our Dms are not adequate Arteta in a 4-1-4-1 dominated Bender and Gundogan. Why? BC 4-1-4-1 is in reality 4-2-3-1. With Ramsey pushed forward alongside Santi, he is able to exert pressure on bender and Gundogan early leaving Arteta to cover Imobile. And it worked. Flamini hasn’t done too much wrong either being disciplined in positioning and barking orders. We are only short of a Cback at the moment. Flamini, taking on the role as our field marshal, barking out orders to others throughout the game to retain our defensive discipline. Brilliant stuff.

Don pelon

Was an undercover gunner in the west brom end yesterday and in those circumstances (for fear of being identified) you can get a more objective assessment of the game. I thought santi was magnificent. Almost as if all of the stuff he’d been trying all season was starting to work for him. But overall just a better team performance: organised and disciplined. As much as I liked most of our performance yesterday I was still shocked that we almost conceded a goal out of nowhere. We deserved the win. We deserved the win last week, too. But we have some moments when concentration drops.

Funny thing is when we are staying deep we have full control and opponents find it difficult to score. But counter attacks are still making me nervous. At least players start to foul early to stop the attack as quick as possible.

Liked the display by Martinez. No mistakes, no dangerous dribblings aso.

Welbeck and Giroud have both scored in recent games. Worth remembering Giroud weighed in with 26 goals last season in all competitions. Santi and Alexis both elevating their game in recent games. Worth noting Santi has 3 assists from 2 games now. Koscielny back to partner Per. Marinez slotting in seemlessly. Worth noting our strength in depth in the keeping department, a good turn around over recent seasons. Flamini holding steady and Ramsey concentrating on simpler things. Chambers improving and Gibbs still fit. Walcott to return. Podolski and Campbell still on hand. Some concerns still (with Arteta out and Diaby… Read more »

Last season, he & Arteta were often alternating as the league leader, along with the CBs; in the end the PL leaders were Koscielny, Mertesacker, Arteta & Flamini at 1st, 2nd, 4th & 6th overall, with only 0.6% between Arteta & Flamini. Pretty incredible to have 4 of the top 6 from one club. As for this season, Flamini is the league leader. WhoScored actually has Arteta ahead by 0.8%, but he (and many others) are excluded because he hasn’t played enough (only half as much as Flamini)
