Embarrassed Giroud pledges to bounce back

Olivier Giroud has admitted being hurt and embarrassed by his performance against Monaco on Wednesday night, but says he’ll work hard to recover and start scoring again.

The Frenchman missed a clutch of chances that a striker with 8 goals in his previous 11 games would expect to score, and his misses were made even more costly by Arsenal’s shambolic defending.

However, Giroud says that despite being affected by what happened, he’s not a broken man and will keep going.

“I am really hurting, more than disappointed, it has been embarrassing for me,” he said.

“t was difficult because nothing went right, everything was tough for me. I tried to keep focused but I understood why the boss wanted to substitute me. It was not my day.

“When you are a striker people expect more from you. I did well recently and scored a lot of goals, but when you miss chances it is like that – you have to question yourself.

“I will keep working hard and bounce back as soon as possible. I have never given up in my career and sometimes I have had tough games like that before.”

Whether he starts on Sunday against Everton remains to be seen. It might be the right thing to throw him again from the start, to give him a confidence boost, but obviously that’s a decision for the manager to make between now and then.

And despite some people have jumped on what was an inexcusably bad performance, these things happen and it wasn’t a true reflection of the Giroud we’ve seen this season.

A goal against the Toffees would be very welcome.

I was still venting yesterday, but after reading this I’m kind of over it and feel quite sorry for Giroud. No ones harder on Giroud than Giroud, so you can imagine how much he’s hurting. He didn’t intend to play that badly so I’m sure he is as baffled as anyone. Sometimes you just have to take it as one of those days and move on. We all have to move on and get behind him and the team on Sunday. Doing the opposite will be good for no one. Let’s salvage this season with the FA Cup. The trip… Read more »

resting giroud would b a mistake
strikers need confidence, he needs to get back in th fray asap. COYG

lollo

How come no ones had a dig at Ozil ? he stinks the place out regularly . at least Giroud works hard no matter how bad he is playing .

lollo

except me ! lol

Alex

Don’t worry, guy, there are many digs at Özil said to infect the other players by his i don’t care attitude.
And what about a dig at Sanchez who lost 40% of his balls and missed 4 clear chances? And a dig at Cazorla who couldn’t keep his defensive duty?

Btw 11.5 kms for the bad Özil on wednesday.. The ONLY Arsenal players among the 5 players who ran most and tried best…

Nacho de Montreal is tasty

Is Ozil a marathonian at Arsene ? Whenever he sucks, people come up with statistics of distance run to defend him. Just to make a point against players being great by definition. It doesn’t stand to reason. Ozil has been good since he returned from injury. Not good against Monaco. That’s factual.

Pedant

Hero to zero.

According to those who haven’t a clue.

Third Plebeian

Absolutely. Giroud is a very good player for us. One bad night doesn’t change that.

GunnerDareMACEDONIA

I hope he bounce back and score tomorrow, and when we go to monaco i want him to score 2 and alexis the 3rd to silent all the haters in the world.

Henry

wrong night to have a bad night

gareth knight

I feel for him,
He was absolute garbage against Monaco but he is still a decent striker that has contributed well for us this season,

Everyone can have bad games now and again, that’s just human, but for our best starting 11 to all play as shit as what we saw on Wednesday, that’s down to the manager….

TruthHurts

I think the main reason we got thrashed was due to Wengers management when he knew damn well we were going to get hit hard on the counter, playing someone as pacey as Per (unfortunately couldnt even keep up with Berbatov) so high up the pitch. Thats what happens when you expect to get the first goal I guess, lesson learnt anyway. Lets hope we dont make that same mistake against United, AGAIN.

Gareth Murray

I know the manager knows him better than me and most likely took him off the other night to protect him and save him further embarrassment. However I felt it was the wrong thing to do. There are no hiding places in competitive sport, we witnessed that. His passing was all over the place and at times he didn’t seem aware of the positioning of his team mates, partly because from defence to attack everyone was undisciplined and often well out of position. However, despite his glaring misses he seemed our most likely player to get a goal. Miss the… Read more »

Bould's Eyeliner

He took him off because we needed a goal and he wasn’t getting one.

Gareth Murray

He was knocking on the door more than anyone else. I watched the great Thierry having a few stinkers like Giroud did the other night. Wenger knew though that Thierry was no shrinking violet and would never haul him off for missing sitters. Not comparing Giroud to Henry, I’m saying sometimes perseverence is a far better option than abandonment.

Brent

I agree. He wasn’t scoring but at least he was shooting.

SG_Gooner

…. and mertesacker made several clearances with only one mistake, he should be the man of the match.

DialSquareGoon

I like Giroud but AW has to be ruthles: It has to be sink or swim at Arsenal, do your job or get dropped. I say start Welbeck in his position against Everton.

MPLS

Sorry, much as I like Welbeck we are not as strong without that target/pivot. Especially so when we are losing control of the midfield battle as we have been lately.

If there’s anything true of Giroud it’s that when he says he’ll work hard to get better you can believe him.

cheeky boy

Nope, dat guy can play up top, and he should do. He is wasted on the wing, and for him to get into any type of form it’ll be by getting goals as striker.

loose_cannon

All that says to me is that we ought to change our style of play to accommodate Welbeck when we play him up front. We could start by releasing the ball a bit earlier and allowing Welbeck and Walcott to get in behind

GunnerDareMACEDONIA

Sometimes wee need a striker to come of the banch and not to start with the only two natural strikers we have in the team giroud and welbz, start tomorrow with front tree of walcott giroud alexis, in the second half bring on ox for walcott and welbz for giroud.

Mesut O'no

Funny that you refer to the front tree as that is what a lot of the Arsenal “fans” think of Giroud.

Personally I think he is a good fit for our current formation, perhaps there are better options but I can’t name many. People say Benzema but he is only a very slight upgrade on Giroud so £40m is not value.

Greg

Think this is lacking that killer instinct he mentioned in reference to Costa. I like giroud alot, don’t want to hear apologies or lessons learnt. Just get out there and show how good you are

Our problems are defensively

Petit's Handbag

He’s still handsome

3-0 down at home to inter milan in the first leg and still qualified! #Believe

Gareth Murray

That was in the group stages . We had 1 point from our first 3 games. In our 4th match against Dynamo Kiev we were within 2 minutes of an early exit when Ashley Cole of all people popped with a goal on 88 minutes to give us a 1.0 win. We then went on to win the group with wins in our last 2 matches including that 5.1 masterclass at Inter Milan. Despite Inter’s great 3.0 start at Highbury they failed to qualify from the group. So your point is valid, we need to go to Monaco and believe.

GunnerDareMACEDONIA

I don’t now what is happening to me but I’m convinced that we will win 3-0 or 3-1. This is monaco and is shit it’s not baern, I’m confident because if we convert the chances we had at home we would score 5 goals despite the suicidal defending, bayern hanged on couple of years ago because we scored the second goal very late but this is monaco give them hell score in the first 10 minutes and destroyed them, i strongly believe we can do it, and if no team has qualified after losing 1-3 knockout game at home this… Read more »

duder

So he had a bad night. Its not the end of the world. Hes been great this season and everyone has off days no matter what the profession. The only thing I think he didn’t need to do was admit to being embarrassed…he doesn’t owe fans apologies, explanations, or anything…except hard work and trying as hard as he can on the pitch. Its the managers job (and certainly not overly critical fans) to decide if hes fit to start or not and when to take him off. If we didn’t let in all those silly goals, he wouldn’t be the… Read more »

GunnerDareMACEDONIA

I remember RVP missing sitter from two yards against Milan shooting straight to the GK, that should have been the 4th goal for us we were leading 3-0.

Sean

You got this, big man. Go get ’em.

Bendtner's Ego

People like to forget, but there were times when TH14 missed chances as well.

It hurt him as well and made him more motivated to set it right the next time.

Rohith

Giroud should start. He has had a phenomenal season so far. 8 goals in 11 games is brilliant. And some of those finishes were sublime. He had a bad day against Monaco. If we had defended better, it wouldn’t have hurt as much. I think Giroud could be one of the best strikers in the world in a couple of seasons.

Trez

Keep dreaming…

Panther

My team to play Everton on Sunday is Ospina / Bellerin Paulista Kocielny Monreal / Coquelin Rosicky/ Walcott Cazorla Chamberlain/ Giroud; in a 4/2/3/1 formation. I don’t know why Walcott has been frozen out after scoring regularly after coming back from injury, Sanchez and Ozil need to sit down to understand they can’t just waltz into the team. With Sanchez Ozil & Welbeck on the bench, there’s enough talent to come on in the second half. I also have concerns about Gnabry not getting a chance to play in the first team, which I feel is a mistake.

AndyMiller

Perfect starting 11

Chilli

praise the lord for you not putting out the team

goontang

Every great team has always had multiple strikers on the books. We for the past season have been caried by one only. I can tell why the pressure gets to him. Even danny welbeck seems a much more comfortable winger, his performances out wide mean we have two of the hardest working wide men in the game. Sanchez and welbeck run their guts out, but we do need some serious investment in an alternative man up front.

billsito

Who’s there to upgrade Giroud? … Don’t come up with 28.or 29 olds solutions … I’m asking who is there at 25 and willing to move ? … Lets get behind our only striker as annoying as it sounds !

chippy's chip

Henrys statue?

GunnerDareMACEDONIA

I would rather invest in Lacazzette and make him another henry then buying someone like falcao for 50 mil who is a flop this season and can’t cope with the EPL standard.

Trez

Why shouldn’t we come up with any 28 or 29 year old?? Are you trying to say he’s the best striker in that age range??

Pony Tulips

When giroud was not in the team cos of the ankle fracture, I really missed him. There were moments when I have felt ‘fuck! If giroud was there it could have been different’. The team is better with giroud than without him.

He is a good player and he needs to be here. He ll prove what he could do in the second leg. I’m positive

Toni

Nice to see fans sticking up for the HFB. Here’s to a good win against the Toffees and a hat trick for Giroud. COYG.

TruthHurts

The HFB was appalling but the BFG was even worse!

An Ox-sized Coq

I think Mertesacker, Giroud, Özil, and Bellerin need to be dropped for Everton. Bellerin wasn’t the worst versus Monaco but Chambers had a decent run of games just before. The other three need to find hunger and will from the bench before they play again.

gooner1886

Of course he deserved to taken off, you can’t miss 4 or 5 sitters and stay on the pitch… that just sends out the wrong message to giroud, the subs and everyone.

Wenger would have been slaughtered even more than he has been if he left him on and rightly so

Jimbo1

Giroud will come good again, but there should be a lot more concern about Ospina. He should have stopped two of the goals which would have taken a lot of the focus away from the failures of the rest of the team. The team completely lost its shape when the first goal sailed past his head with no attempt to save it. Bring back the big Pole, (cant spell his name.)

Triggs

According to Erik Thorstvedt (the viking), the old spurs keeper, Ospina was about to throw himself the other direction and as such had positioned himself and put all his weight over on the opposite foot from where the ball went as a result of the deflection, so in his opinion he had no chance to react in time due to the laws of physics. But I agree it looked strange. But we see these kind of things all the time from deflections where keepers just stand there, but when the keeper has commited to going one way and a deflection… Read more »

Jimbo1

I take the point about being wrong footed, but how close was he to the ball. It almost looks like an outstretched arm could have reached it, even if he could not transfer his body weight. It was travelling quite fast, but to be beaten so comprehensively from 35 meters seems strange. I wouldn’t mind seeing a view from behind the goal as the side on view looks like he was not trying.

GunnerDareMACEDONIA

Don’t forget that, that was a powerful shot not a place one, and the ball get even more speed after the wicked deflection, so no chance even if he got a fingertips on the ball the ball still would go in.

rch

Girould is a Mondeo when what we need is a Ferrari.
Dont get me wrong he does a lot of good things but as the focal point he needs to hold it up better

Amusa

It was shameful the way some ‘fans’ got on his back, after the game.
If I was the at Emirates on Sunday, I would sing Na Na Na Giroud on the top my lungs.
But as I’m several thousand miles away, I’ll scream/sing that at my TV.

santori

Giroud at very least does not hide.

Omoke Kelv

Giroud!Giroud!Giroud!I think this player has improved on his first season dis season, he wants to do well and he is really trying to do well, its not easy when games don’t turn out for players as planned, it can be very frustrating, so, the best we do is just get behind our striker and help him find his form and confidence to kill it when it matters most. Whether he starts against Everton is down to the manager.

Javis

I was really disappointed he was hooked, white frankly it was bad man management. He was having an off game but he still was most likely to score. We know he’s an emotional guy anyway.

It served no purpose other than to embarress him, Walcott for Welbeck was the change to make..Like for like on terms of pace but with better finishing

Triggs

Horrendous game by Giroud, But then again he was getting more big chances than anyone else, so perhaps it was the wrong decision to take him off? He might have scored one in the end. I certainly did not think the team improved in any way by substituting Giroud. Was still rubbish.

Goon

If he scores within the first 15 minutes against Monaco in the return leg then I think we will win.

Ciderman

I think the set up is all wrong and should go to a 3-5-2 formation with the three at the back staying there

WengersNoseHair

And play more long balls than any one else?

Alexstratz

I don’t think Giroud is the only one who missed good chances. He gets the spotlight because he is in fact our only striker in the squad. Yet even if he isn’t among the greatest strikers out there, he’s enough quality for us to win against a team like Monaco. Therefore he really shouldn’t get all the blame, it was a complete f*ck-up by everyone.

Rezatron

It wasn’t Giroud who let 3 goals in against Monaco.

Nacho de Montreal is tasty

Welbeck is not showing he can be an alternative center forward. He is just proving the reason why Van Gaal sold him : Inability to score goals. He works hard, sends the ball everywhere but the back of the net. Theo needs to start ahead him. Welbeck is not a king of assists either so why having him do his mindless hard work ?

neutral

LVG sold Welbeck to pay Falcao’s wages, they probably miss him now

karl

He is far from good enough in the big games. Please, get us a world class striker Mr. Wenger. And in the future I trust you will give Akpom, Welbeck, Sanchez the chance in that position because Giroud just ain’t gonna cut it.

David Hillier Handled My Luggage

Giroud’s been fantastic for us this season…..he’ll bounce back.
As for Sunday, I’d be very tempted, given what players we have available, to play the Ox or Tommy in the middle to support our penis……I mean Coq. I reckon The Ox is strong and athletic enough to play as a kind of box to box midfielder if needed to….. and Tommy always gets stuck in! The big question after that is – who do you drop Carzola or Ozil? What do others think? COYG

chippy's chip

Hope the bfg is embarrassed too. Surely now we have quality cover he should be dropped a la szcz and hopefully will find it very hard to get his place back!

iamgunner-lilwayne

Giroud misses a chance fans should hit this chant

Take your hands from your face
You gona score a brace
Take your hands from your face
You gona score a brace
Giroud!!!!
