Report: Arsenal 4-1 Liverpool (inc goals)

Arsenal: Ospina, Bellerin, Mertesacker, Koscielny, Monreal, Coquelin, Cazorla, Ramsey, Ozil, Alexis, Giroud

Subs: Macey, Gibbs, Gabriel, Flamini, Rosicky, Walcott, Welbeck

Arsenal scored three goals in 8 first half minutes, as well as a late cracker from Olivier Giroud to secure a 4-1 win against Liverpool at the Emirates today.

There were returns for Santi Cazorla and Mesut Ozil but no place on the bench for Wojciech Szczesny who missed the game through a rib injury, meaning youngster Matt Macey was called on to provide cover for Ospina.

Arsenal had the first chance of the game after 30 seconds, Alexis dragging a shot wide, followed not long afterwards by a Cazorla effort which Simon Mignolet got down well to save.

There was an even more clear cut chance for Aaron Ramsey in the 5tgh minute when he found himself clean through – he chose to shoot from close range but his left-footed effort was weak and the follow up was cleared just as Cazorla was about to put the ball into an empty net.

It was a bright start from the home side but even as the game settled down a bit from its frantic opening, most of the possession and pressure was with Arsenal. The visitors did grow into things and fluffed a superb chance to open the scoring.

Markovic got in behind the Arsenal defence with just Ospina to beat. Instead of shooting he decided to play it across goal to Sterlin for a tap-in but the ball was just too heavy and the chance went begging.

Liverpool’s growing confidence saw Coutinho shoot not far wide with Ospina on the stretch, and when Cazorla gave the ball away Sterling’s first time shot ended up the right side of the post from an Arsenal point of view.

Sterling almost found Jordan Henderson after the midfielder’s run found him with just the keeper to beat but the cross was too heavy. It looked as if they were most likely to score but in the 36th minute Arsenal took the lead.

The move started with a brilliant Ozil pass to Ramsey down the right, the Welshman played it inside Bellerin who drove into the box, stepped inside a challenge and curled it into the bottom corner with his left foot. 1-0.

Less than two minutes later the lead was doubled. Ozil was flattened by Sakho just outside the area, and Anthonty Taylor had no hesitation in awarding the free kick. The German stepped up and curled the ball into the corner of the goal that the keeper should have been protecting. 2-0.

It got even better just before the break when we extended the lead further.  Bellerin fizzed a ball into Ramsey, the first touch was superb as he turned away from his opponent and played in Alexis. The Chilean stepped inside the defender, and lashed an unstoppable shot past Mignolet to make it 3-0 with his 20th goal of the season.

It was an astonishing final 10 minutes to the half with three goals of the highest quality, one which prompted Liverpool into a half-time change bringing on Daniel Sturridge for Markovic.

There was an early second half change for Arsenal too, Gabriel replacing Koscielny in the 50th minute due to a groin problem. Giroud had the first shot of the second period, drilled straight at the keeper after sensational build-up play between Ramsey and Cazorla.

Liverpool had Mignolet to thank for keeping the score at 3-0 with a great save to deny Giroud in the 55th minute. Arsenal worked the ball down the right, Ozil’s cross was headed towards goal but the keeper got a good hand on it.

At the other end Ospina had to be smart to keep out a Can shot at his near post, before another Arsenal change, this time Flamini replacing Ramsey on 61 minutes.  Coutinho shot wide as the Gunners sat off, not needing to over-commit and looking to catch them on the break.

Emre Can shot over the bar as Liverpool struggled to make use of the possession they had, prompting Arsene Wenger to make his final change as Danny Welbeck replaced Ozil in the 74th minute.

A rash challenge from Hector Bellerin handed Liverpool a lifeline when he brought down Sterling in the area. Although Ospina got a hand on it, Henderson’s penalty crept into the bottom corner to make it 3-1.

Mignolet saved from Welbeck before the England international was fouled by Can, resulting in a second yellow card for the Liverpool man. Emre Can’t, am I right?!

Giroud was denied a volley by Toure; Cazorla hit the post after fine build-up play involving Alexis, Welbeck and Monreal; but the icing on the cake came from Olivier Giroud in the second minute of injury time.

Alexis fed the Frenchman down the inside right channel, he had support from Welbeck and Cazorla, but he stepped inside and lashed the ball into the net to make it 4-1. It was no less than he deserved and capped a fine display from Arsenal which sees them 9 points clear of Brendan Rodgers side in the race for the Champions League places.

Bellerin two goals already – Sanga had four in seven years! He had a great game aside from conceding the penalty (and I think he was a bit lucky not to get a second yellow), as did so many others. Ozil was guilty of a couple of careless giveaways early on, but he recovered nicely. Giroud with a great goal to continue the best form of his career… So much to be excited about. Would have been nice to see Cazorla finish that nice chance at the end, he seems to have more near-misses than any other player on the… Read more »

ARiddlingName

Agreed about Cazorla but then again, if he kept scoring those he would be pretty much a perfect footballer and that’s just unfair to the rest of the world. 😛

TC_42

Top, top name there.

ENJ

We had to dick them at our home after last season at anfield. REVENGE

Arsenalnut

Coq them.

masterofthegoonaverse

shame we did not get the fifth! #Brendans a genius!

GreekTragedy

If I were being massively critical, I still haven’t seen a performance from Rambo this year anywhere near to last seasons craziness. But overall, everyone solid as a rock. Both full backs and Coq especially was awesome I thought.

ARiddlingName

Forgotten the West Ham match already?

Why do you ask my name? It is beyond understanding

To be honest, today is not a day to be massively – or even slightly – critical. Enjoy. The. Victory!

masterofthegoonaverse

YYYYEEEEEEEEHHHHAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Siz C

Why be massively critical????

Live a little and enjoy the entertaining victory

Dracular

4 sexy goals!!!

Nigerian

What a game. Put liverpool in their place. Couple of weeks ago, Brenda was talking ago bout finishing 2nd. Maybe he meant 2nd in Europa league spots.

Mesut

I think he meant 2nd in the FA Cup

arsepedant

He won’t even be top four in the FA Cup.

masterofthegoonaverse

Might get 4th

Uptheguns

Look at how how sad the man is in this video. I feel so bad for him, but then I think about last season and how they deserved to put in their place!

D

Well I 4-1 enjoyed them all.

Gandalf

Very good.

DR

Yep, felt Ozil was pretty anonymous (properly so, rather than Mail ‘anonymous’) for the first 20 minutes qnd then stepped up and turned God mode on.

sg gooner

Great game! But bellerin really need to curb his habit of collecting yellow cards. Though that was a definitive trait of wenger early days gunners. That physicality.

Rufusstan

I’d guess the yellows will drop away with more experience. Sadly that was his 5th, so does that mean a ban? (or is there a mid-season amnesty).

The physicality is a great thing. I Thought it showed in the first penalty shout between him and Stirling. It looked more like Stirling running into Bellerin and bouncing off.

Its even more striking because they are both kids at the same age.

sg gooner

Definitely. You can be physical, but you need to learn to do it discreetly. Ray parlour have a trick or two up his sleeves.

Cornelius P. Snuffington III

After Jan. 1, it takes 10 yellows for a suspension.

Rufusstan

Bonus. Was pretty sure he was OK, but not sure.

goontang

Wow. Just wow lads. This is the arsenal i stay up at all hours of the morning for in australia. Not to mention the look on the faces of the two scousers sitting next to me. Go take a drink lads, couldnt be prouder.

Football’s a wonderful thing when Arsenal are flying eh?!

Always a joy to see ospina going to and laying on the ground after claiming a routine cross when we’re leading

Vat

Great performance. We murdered them. Could have scored 6 easy. Blogs asked on the last podcast, have Arsenal made progress. A squad that may be the best in the league now, one that Arsene has built through the bleak financial stadium years; 2nd in the league and not 30 but 4 points behind the leaders, likely FA cup winners (we’re odds on favourites). We’ve become over critical – this is progress by any fkin yardstick. On and up

masterofthegoonaverse

Please do not ever say “likely cup winners”. Odds on favourites lose on a regular basis. I was at Wembley in 69, know what I mean?

Great game by our boys, lovely goals by Bellerin, Ozil and Giroud. 2nd place!!!

Can’t help but feel that we should have sacked that so-called Venga when we had the chance – i.e. at the sweet end of last year. Now he’s only gone and won 15 out of the last 17 matches in all competitions, and is difficult to see how such a run could end in the near future. He will go on to retain the FA cup this year and is looking strong for the 2nd place in the PL as well. So what will stop him from winning the league next year and actually extending his contract to have a… Read more »

Don’t forget that Ozil fella. I mean what has he contributed to the team? Is that it for the 42 million pounds? I really think he’s having a quiet season.

Great result, we played very well. Could have been more even.

For all you negative people, 33 points out of 36. At what point do you think that you are wrong?

Yeaaaah 2nd !!!

GreekTragedy

I raised concerns about Coquelin a few months ago as to whether he had what it takes to play that important DM role. I’m so pleased he just makes me eat my words, week in, week out. What a performance. Bossed it!

GraysGooner

Fair play to you for acknowledging you got it wrong. He had a great game today and gives us the solid base to bring the attacking headline makers in. Liverpool were poor but until a fortnight ago were the form team. Need Chelsea to drop points now and who knows…..

DR

And it was a good passing performance too, nice distribution.

masterofthegoonaverse

Our Coq is hard. And invisible. Think Gilberto.

happy gunner

Holy shit we could have had 100 goals that game. We were utterly devastating. Outstanding.

I’d just like to point out that Wenger changed the team for this game. Tactical master class. Ramsey on RW . yet I didn’t hear that waste of pundit space Owen once praise arsenal properly. That guys just a dick.

I love you arsenal.

What a win!!

AnonymousGun

No chance for Theo now if even Ramsey gets a nod against him in his RW spot. eh?

Rufusstan

If Wellbeck gets on the pitch ahead of Theo with the OX and Gnabry still injured, I’d say Ramsey is the least of his problems.

AnonymousGun

And Welbeck just recently injured too.

😐

Ramsey's spirit

Walcotts biggest rival in the squad is his own imbalance. Put some defensive steel in him OR move him to striker back up / left wing back up and use him as a tactical surprise up front option. Giroud is top striker for me, but some teams might really struggle with the differences he offers there. (Walcott) again I have to stress giroud is for me world class and well suited to us. Just throwing out ideas as to how to make use of an expense on our wage budget

Mpls

Theo’s not getting a start in a match like this when he’s out of form and with a young RB behind him. Ramsey helped cover with Sterling matched up on Bellerin and Per. If Debuchy had been healthy and in form he might- might, with the increased confidence in an experienced and more defensively minded back behind him.

First and foremost Theo’s got to prove he is back when he gets other chances.

Chimex N.

You are so right! Owen only became a pundit just to insult Arsenal. he has no business being among them.

DAMOBOT

Invincible Performance and incredible goals !!! worth the two week wait

rummy

Its the hope that kills ya but we’re 4 points away!!!! (albeit with 2 less games)

Exiledgooner

I do enjoy it when those uppity Scousers are put firmly in their place. Long may it continue.

Paul

If anyone says Giroud is “limited” or not “world class” again – I will have to disagree!

“Brazilian/Barcelona” like performance from the Gunners at times today!

So proud!

COYG!

sg gooner

I mentioned before somewhere back and I am gonna repeat it now. Giroud can definitely be our very own Batistuta/veiri. Just look at his goal today. That shot power. Lovely.

Arseology - Reloaded

Giroud is not world class. It’s painful enough watching Messi and Ronaldo embarrass themselves trying to challenge the GOAT – Lord Bendtner. However, if he keeps this up he could get his chance polishing Bendtners boots.

Trez

He’s in a rich vein of form, nothing more, nothing less. He hasn’t turned to batigol or vieri after half a season of good form, otherwise Papis cisse would’ve been R9 based on his form when he signed for newcastle in the jan window.
However, i’m happy he’s in top form and hopefully we can get 2nd or 3rd place and win the FA cup.

Up the Gunners! Lovely win after all that hard work to get ahead.. although that sterling scare gave me a worry we were gonna do a Monaco, but the boys finished it nicely. Ozil really compliments our game and if the detractors couldn’t see that today after he came off, then they can see it up our Arses then. Big sign that the Boss chose to bring on the “tweaked” Welbeck instead of Walcott. Maybe it was more for his defensive side as he was scared of a Liverpool upswing. Bellerin would have been my MOTM had it not been… Read more »

What a phenomenal display from back to front (and side to side too). Ozil was spectacular – His FK will grab headlines but his brilliant crossfield from the half way line to Ramsey setup Bellerin’s opener. Alexis looks refreshed too with a goal and an assist and Giroud is scoring like there’s no tomorrow. I would also like to highlight Ramsey’s display today – Yes he missed a sitter, but never stopped running and bagged 2 assists (2nd one to Alexis was a cracking turn). Onwards and upwards now – Lets just win all our games and perhaps we’ll get… Read more »

That was one of the best performances across the park I’ve seen from us. We let them play when we had to and crushed them when it was on. We could feasibly have had more goals in the first half.
4 beautiful goals
cant describe this feeling, utter ecstasy!!

Bellerin is a cracking player.. He jus- you know what, no need to mention any of them, gold stars everyone

Alexstratz

Very convincing win.

Fatgooner

Excellent first half; disappointing second. We rode our luck slightly but deserved to be ahead at half time, but not by three. I loved the Bellerin goal. But in the second period Wenger got it tactually wrong: we allowed them far too much of the ball by standing back and defending. Had we just kept the pressure on the dodgy Liverpool defence we would have been 5 or 6 up within the hour. Instead we handed them the initiative and allowed them a sniff of a point. Luckily, the brainless Can got himself sent off and then that was that.… Read more »

Do you still think Giroud is “limited” Fats?

If so, name a few “un-limited” players please?!!

Sorry, but still cross about your post yesterday!

Fatgooner

Giroud is a couple of notches below world class. He’s not Aguero, Suarez or even Rooney. Sorry but true. But I’ve always like him. If he was world class then we’d still be in the Champions League.

Paul

Thanks for responding fats but I think he has just gone a “notch” into the “world class” arena ! COY HFB!

How dare you compare Rooney to our world-class striker ? To get attention I suppose.

masterofthegoonaverse

Fuck off fat gooner. This is a good day!

Alexstratz

Yeah, and then Anderlecht.

Rufusstan

This can be described as harsh at best. (I’ll leave others to suggest alternatives) Its amazing to describe us as riding our luck in the first half due to the Liverpool mossed chances without acknowledging that but for Mignolet we’d have been at least 2 goals clear in the first 10 minutes. In terms of Bellerin and the penalty: not every challenge is a yellow, it was late but not reckless, so the penalty was probably a fair punishment. — Different to Can where Rogers has already invoked the: ‘he’s not that kind of player’ defense, which sums up how… Read more »

Once again Fatgooner gets down voted just because of his username & history in the comments section. While I don’t agree with his overall analysis of the game, he does have a point in that this was not the emphatic win that the scoreline would have you believe. Had Markovic (2-0 with the goalkeeper) squared the ball properly we could well be talking about Monaco at home again. Right now I am over the moon over the result, but I do appreciate Fatgooners input on this site, and most of all that he is consistent – even in victory he… Read more »

had ramsey put his foot through it and mignolet not pulled of a blinder vs cazorla we wld have been 2-0 up in the first 10 minutes. so please, it goes both ways. we were the better team, we had by far more clear cut chances.

gammhunn

Agreed. Still cannot believe it was 0-0 after 35 minutes.

CB

There are some people that I would like not to have to read. Fatgooner isn’t one of them yet and he made some good points in his post. However ‘Once again Fatgooner gets down voted just because of his username & history in the comments section’ isn’t correct. It isn’t ‘just’ that, he got downvoted because he is criticising us for defending. Against Monaco we attacked, they scored 3 (with the last one being painful in particular) and we were criticised for that. So defending when 3-0 up and having several chances on the break is good tactics, Fatgooner and… Read more »

gammhunn

All very good points CB. I do think it is worth more to actually comment than just thumb down & move on, as you have shown here.

Fatgooner

One of the key tactics to get right in any game of football is the balance between attack and defence. At 3-0 up you’re right to say that there was no need to go recklessly attacking, but just sitting back and absorbing pressure wasn’t too smart either. Bearing in mind that Liverpool’s defence contained the over-the-hill Toure and the heeadless chicken Sakko, not putting them under pressure didn’t seem to make much sense to me. In the first half it was the Scouser’s poor defending which helped us to gain that handsome lead; we should have tested it more in… Read more »

CB

Wenger’s defending tactics worked against Man City (we have more than one approach now, you should recognise this if you are being honest instead of making comments as I’ve copied below) and they worked against Liverpool – we had better chances in the second half than Liverpool did. Our pace against Toure is more effective if we sit back and then let Sanchez, Bellerin and Welbeck counter attack at pace with Ozil and Cazorla to feed them and Ramsey turning up late into the box. Remember City. Against Anderlecht we had Monreal at centre half and no Coq. And we… Read more »

CB

Great analysis of the first half. Were we that safe and did we want to continue like that in the second half? I think not, they didn’t have so many good chances in the second. http://gingers4limpar.com/?p=2808&utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=liverpool

Fatgooner

Thanks!

Arsenalnut

I enjoy a good piece of self-critical angst as much as the next paranoid Gunner, but maybe you should take a Valium or something. If we had continued pressing and Pool had made adjustments at the half and opened us up like a melon, you would have said, what? Stupid Wenger for not anticipating the adjustments? Its not like they dominated us in the second half. We lost a bit of momentum because Kos and Ramsey were lost due to injury. The ref was a stupid knob. He let Sakho kick Ramsey with impunity. He’d committed maybe 5 fouls before… Read more »

Crash Fistfight

Agree with most of that, but the Henderson handball wasn’t a penalty – it was ball to hand.

I do think it’s overly critical to suggest we played the wrong tactics in the second half. If the team had gone for it at 3-0 (without any real need to do so) I’m sure we’d have been living on our nerves for long stretches. As it was, other than the penalty, what did Liverpool create?

GraysGooner

In 2003/04 did you bemoan the fact that we dropped points with all those draws?

Xxxrob

I’m confused.. We weren’t ‘supposed’ to be up by 3 by half time.. But then Wengers bad tactics caused us to not be up 5 or 6 by the 60th minute.
You’re telling me his tactics cost us 5 goals in 15 minutes today lol?
