All need the run out, so I’m all for it. Though they need a rest over the summer too…

UGooner

Yep. And based on that squad, with all due respect to the other players (Except the sp*ds) they should all get some decent playing time to strut their stuff.

Hodgson is smart. He knows he can’t rely on some of these other form players because when big competition time rolls in, they tend to freeze. That part pisses me the fuck off.

Merlin's Panini

Good stuff. I’m glad Gibbs got back in.
I noticed Charlie Austin got called up too. Anyone else think he might be worth a punt in the transfer market? 17 goals for a shit, relegated, QPR is pretty impressive.

CB

Too slow in my opinion. But interested to see what people think.

Eric Blair

If we buy a striker he must be an upgrade on Giroud and Welbeck, Austin is not this despite being a decent stiker. I’m not convinced there’s an upgrade out there who will be available this summer so I expect the money to go elsewhere, perhaps a wide attacking player if Theo leaves, Sterling could be that player. On the other hand, if Benzema became available we might go for him. Having reread what I wrote I realised how utterly pointless it is trying to second-guess Wenger so we’ll just have to wait and see! I’m looking forward to the… Read more »

How about bringing back Nicholas Bendtner?

CB

Good call. We can all think of things he is world class at. I’ll start – big-headedness.

Runcorn Gooner

Don’t forget we still have ##Hello I still have a contract available

Count

Off to create a petition..

Merlin's Panini

Fair do’s. Just seeing what people thought.
I reckon he’d be a reliable one to have as a Giroud alternative to give him some rest, but it would be nice to have a real world class player who could also really up Giroud’s game with the competition provided.

Stringer Bell

With all due respect sir, me thinks we have to aim a damn site higher than Charlie Austin if we want to win leagues.

CB

The more things that Jack has to keep him on the straight and narrow the better.

Stillmatic

Honestly, what does Carl need to do to get called up into the first team for England?

I mean, let’s be brutally honest here, he’s done more this season than Gibbs, and there’s an equal lack of RBs for England right now.

Parisian Weetabix

Unfortunately Carl’s no longer eligible, after he switched nationality to Bantarctica.

assistantref

He’s got Clyne ahead of him and that seems pretty fair to me. But it is odd that Hodgson didn’t select two RBs.

Stillmatic

That’s what I mean.
Really, only Clyne is his competition. I can’t think of many young English RBs that have played as much and performed as well as Carl has.

Gibbs has rarely featured this season, and has to contend with even more LB competition, yet still got a place?

Anonymous Physicist

He’s been selected for the U21s and Hodgson chose not to pick anyone Southgate wanted to pick. Which sounds like a pretty good policy to me, to be honest, and it makes sense to go to a tournament with the players who actually played the qualifying games.

Hoogy

Don’t get injured Wilshere….

Pretty please….

Cherry on top.

Petit's Handbag

Hope they all play shockingly bad.
I’m Irish though so I have a good reason to hope that.
Hopefully McClen smashes Townsend up.

Chairman Meow

so want england to play almost as well as ireland do?

Richie

If I was a united fan (thank Bergkamp I’m not!) I would be majorly pissed off that Young isn’t included. Definitely should be ahead of Townsend, probably Walcott as well

Mpls

Townsend, definitely.
But Young and Theo are very different players. Young plays more on the left these days and is a more end-to-end winger. Theo is definitely right-sided and has the option of 2nd striker up top. Oh, and speed.

Which all reminds me of Bellerin scorching back to cut out Young’s break making him look like he was standing still.

David C

you are right, Young has been Man URE’s best player for most of their recent games. He can play on the left or the right; strange selections indeed. Arsenal would destroy England in a game. National footie is sooo boring compared to club football. I’m from Canada so our team only made 1 World Cup: 1986 when it was in Mexico so CONCACAF was awarded an extra spot!

Mein Bergkampf

Andros Townsend! I remember that guy! This was his breakthrough season wasn’t it? Oh. No. No it wasn’t.

Fatgooner

It tells you everything that you need to know about the current state of English international football when a bunch of Arsenal players who have hardly played in months due to injury and poor form are all immediately drafted into a full squad.

At least they’ll get some much-needed match practice.

SB

There is hope for England!

There will be a day when the majority of the starting XI for England will be Arsenal players, then there will be hope progress beyond the dizzy heights reached by the ‘Golden Generation’ of Rooney, Gerrard, Lamport, etc!

Thierry Bergkamp

“Golden generation”.. I still think them being labelled as “the worlds best midfield (Lampard, J Cole, Gerrard, Beckham) before the 2006 WC, is the most ridiculous thing ever spoken in football.

Juxta Position

Lol Jamie Vardy? And people wonder why England don’t play better…

santori

Gibbs has an opportunity to make the LB berth his. Thought he was good against Sunderland showing real attacking intent and had a header at goal saved by Pantilimon. Needs to add scoring and providing from out wide to his repetoire. Jack looks rejuvenated and ready to go. There’s no one in the England set up that is able to carry the ball like he does. Using him as a DM would be simply asinine. He could play the Santi role maybe. Walcott looks ready to go too. Needs game time. His ball control has improved in recent seasons and… Read more »

Welbeck is always excellent for the national team though. His goal scoring rate for the national team is almost exactly twice as good as his rate in the premier league.

You’d almost think it shows what he could do when given time up front by a manager who has confidence in him, but that’s exactly what he got at the start of this season, and it didn’t help that much.

Thierry Bergkamp

Does anybody really give a shit about the national team, these days?

ClockEndRider

Just how does Welbeck get called up? He’s not even in our squad due to illness/injury(?). Quite bizarre….

Left

This squad is so poor. England rarely had a great national team, but this is just way below what you expect from the country with the best league in the world.
