Hodgson says Welbeck will miss 6 months

When Arsenal announced Danny Welbeck would be missing for a ‘period of months’ rather than any specific time-frame, it seemed fairly obvious that his problem was quite serious.

Now, after England’s 6-0 win over San Marino, England manager Roy Hodgson has admitted he’s worried about the striker, and says he’s been told it’s going to be quite a lengthy absence for the former Man Utd man.

Making public his fears that Welbeck could miss next summers European Championships, Hodgson said, “Welbeck bothers me now. He has already been out for me since March so that’s over four months already.

“And now I hear it’s another six months, so I can only hope that Danny recovers a bit quicker and hits the ground running.”

We’ll have to wait and see, but maybe Hodgson is a bit mixed up. Welbeck hasn’t been out since March, his last Arsenal appearance was on April 26th against Chelsea, so fingers crossed the 6 months he’s talking about here is inaccurate also.

Shame

Highberry

Thank goodness we’re not at sea where stranger things happen

Sean

Ding ding.

RIP Hleb

This isn’t good. If I remember correctly, our best form last season came when Welbeck was playing from the right wing. I understand that he’s limited in some areas but he’s a very capable and important player for us who we’re gonna miss in a big way, regardless of whether he starts. Get well soon welbz

why not

I thought he was generally quite good for us when he was fit. Yeah he can prove himself to be a better player than what weve already seen. But im not forgetting that most of that was actually pretty good. He took out United in the FA cup run, legend.

AllGunsABlazin

For fuck’s sake

Ferngunner

At this rate by the time he is back Hodgson will be handing Danny his ‘first cap’

Here’s to a shorter time out for Welbz.

spinner

Sorry, I don’t understand the pun you are attempting?

bonbonbon

Do you not punderstand?

Ferngunner

I don’t know what i am doing.

tankardgooner

He’s going to be as good as a “new signing” for roy by the time he comes back.
I understand ferngunner writes most of wenger’s post transfer window speeches.

MannyG

If i’m not mistaken, it’s a knee cap joke?

Ferngunner

The pun was to take a shot at Hodgsons alleged forgetfulness. ‘First international cap’

Any clearer?

SGK

keep the faith guys. Good luck Danny.

Ditch the Blue

Hodgson says he’s been out for him (England) since March, not when he last played!

Arseblood

….but we definitely did NOT need another striker! Another season wasted.

Man Manny

We sure needed one ( sarcasm understood).
We have no option now but to wait and see where we are by January – hoping we are not out of the title race by then.
The fact that Monreal, Gabriel and Arshavin were signed in the winter transfer gives me hope that we can still find a bargain. But it shouldn’t have come to this in the first place; I hope Arsene learns his lessons.

OOzil

but we need to keep our expectations/hopes real.. as in.. monreal. gabriel ..

Man Manny

Yes I agree; the facts are stacked against him. But in life, I haved learned to never say never – stranger things, I mean more unexpected things, have happened.

Fabulous

I too learned to never say never in life. Justin Bieber taught me.

Goontang

Monreal has been fantastic. Just like gabriel when called upon

blue bird Gunner

WHAT!!! AW learn his lesson? After 19 years in charge and doing the same? Jesus. .. you must be the most pro-Arsene wenger-optimistic fan in the world. This man would never change! Period
He makes all kinds of excuses- first it was the stadium, then the spirit of the team is strong, then internal solutions. For hell sake give me a break

Jimbo 1

Arsene never learns and keeps making the same mistakes almost every transfer window. He always thinks he can wrangle a bargain at the last minute when everyone gets desperate, but it seldom comes off leaving gaping holes in the squad and the season’s prospects in disarray. We will never win another title whilst he is in charge. Third place at best again for the most stubborn man in football.

paul

Yeah massive mistake by Wenger not signing Benzema when he had the chance…oh hold on a minute…

Jimbo 1

Sorry, my mistake. I didn’t realise Benzema was the only striker in the entire world. All is forgiven Arsene.

Johnny blowfish

People underestimate how massive a player he is for us and England. I’m so gutted to hear this. I really believed this could have been a breakthrough season for him. Arsene has royally taken the piss out of the fan base this Summer. Just when you think he’s turned a corner he reverts back to type. Our expert medical team would have known exactly the extent of his injury from the outset. I fearfully anticipate the Coquelin injury that will render this season a write off. If you believe Coquelin’s style of play isn’t paramount to the style in which… Read more »

Ferngunner

Arteta will most likely step up and square-pass us to 4th spot Trophy early March. (Stay fit Coq!)

santori

Arteta and Flamini are better users of the ball going forward than many give them credit for. They are not as dynamic as Coquelin which is Le Coq’s greater virtue at the moment but as experienced back up, we have two players. The greater worry is the loss of Carzola. He is the other half that makes that midfield tick for us (Neville does not know what he is talking, his memory is based on olde tactics from 10 years past) NO other player has more touches than Santi and he helps control our game beside Coquelin. Last seasons weak… Read more »

voldermort

Too long.

Biishopp

Let me summarize what Santori is trying to say: He is saying Welbeck will come better and amazing like the American Navy seal who took out Bin Laden and went on to get a book deal and has already contacted the Greek government looking to buy an Island with the proceeds from his book to help Greece through the economic crisis that is threatening the EU; Thereby helping refugees flooding into Europe and making the world a better place….
Oh Welbeck

OOzil

longer than welbeck’s injury absence.. 😛

Crash Fistfight

There was an episode of Friends when Joey wrote and letter and then changed the words by substituting in synonyms he’d got out of a thesaurus.

This post reminds me of that.

Crash Fistfight

*a letter

spinner

Did you mean early May?
If we’re guaranteed top 4 finish in early March then we would probably be favourites to win the league.

Ferngunner

He won’t last til May.

VintageFuzz

Hodgson said “Welbeck’s been out for me since March…”
Welbz last played (and scored) for the national side against Lithuania in March. He missed the following game against Italy and then got injured against Chelsea… The next internationals were in June so yeah he’s been out since March for Hodgson.

Pat

Also by the same logic as he won’t be available for England v France in November he won’t be available for another international game until March so 6 Months(ish).

Totalgooner

… Balls.
Jacks banjaxed and now Danny’s got worse. I’m looking forward to watching our striking forces fragility’s being exposed further, when the inevitable injury happens to Theo or Giroud (or both) – I hope this Campbell lad is up for a game or two..

AN other

I won’t trust Hodgson over those numbers. I am sure Wenger and his team would have much better picture on when he would return. It’s bit strange from him to spout numbers when he can’t be sure of it.

2012

Hodgson gives a timeframe relevant to England. Let’s say Welbeck takes three months to recover (end Nov or early Dec). However, England does not have any match after 17 Nov, until 26 Mar, which is more than six months to Hodgson.

Mick

Don’t worry he will be LANS. Hang on I’m starting to sound like Wenger now FFS

Heroldgoon

I’ve noticed Wenger affords Ozil special attention. In the past 3 season just before Internationals (vs Newcastle twice) he misses the game usually with some sort of “sickness or slight Injury” only to turn up for the National team just days after.

Either that or Wenger aims to limit the amount of games Ozil plays. (Terrible job since he goes on to play anyway)

Other curious cases include ‘Injured’ Bellerin missing in the lead up to a ‘winnable game’ at the Emirates vs Westham.

Deano

I watched the Germany game. I heard it being said that the German camp were slightly concerned about him turning up with a slight injury problem. Don’t think they were saying it as a favour for Arsene.

Rasta Gooner

Listen Joel Campbell right now is shappening his costa ricans claws, ready to pounce on any chance given. I knew there was a reason he was not going out on another loan spell. AW knew it all along. But please Chuba bring Chuba back in january like we brought Le Coq Block n the Bell a Ring, and hope he too does what the other two did!!!

gooner1981

Let’s hope his healing process/recovery/match-fitness time is less than 6 months. It’s a real shame for both England and Arsenal. Let’s hope Theo, Alexis and Giroud stay fit till January at the very least, and bang in the goals.

I get that Arsenal didn’t want to announce this striker injury since it would have (further) jacked up the prices for a striker, but having said that if they knew Welbeck needed surgery would it not have been prudent to have kept Akpom or Sanogo? Let’s hope Joel Campbell does a Coquelin!

marksensei

That would be a “camp” coq then?

hashtag

I don’t see how jacking up prices for a striker is an issue when you have no intention of buying a srtiker.

Mpls

Unless you actually had the intention but it just didn’t work out.

hashtag

I was just messing, but after reading your comment I want to say this: the transfer window is what 2 months? Plus June when presumably a lot of negotiations go on, and probably even before that. For it to just not “work out” is a pretty monumental failure. I like Arsene and a lot of what he stands for, I like the way our club doesn’t throw money at the situation like Man Utd, Man City and Chelsea, but I can’t help thinking that if we are going to move to the next level we need to be more active… Read more »

santori

As the papers would deem to suggest now there was never a bid for Benzema. This contradicts their narrative painting Arsenal as failures to their phantom transfer targets. No amount of money would move Benzema or for the matter Cavanni at PSG if their parent clubs refuse to sell. Just ask yourself the simple question, who would either club bring in to replace them? Giroud is in the top ten of world strikers and the elasticity in supply for top end strikers is tight. Andre Ayew was a good pick up (for free) for Swansea being able to add goals… Read more »

Deano

I like big Oli but in the top ten strikers in the world…

Crash Fistfight

Elasticity doesn’t refer to the availability of goods, it refers to how buyers respond to changes in price.

For example, petrol is inelastic – people will still buy the same amount even if it becomes more expensive because they have to. An example of an elastic product could be coffee – if the price goes up people might buy tea instead.

You can’t therefore have differing levels of elasticity – something either is elastic or it is inelastic.

hashtag

Thumbs down. Get out of here with your “knowledge”

Jimbo 1

Petrol is not entirely inelastic. If it got too high people would either use public transport more, buy electric cars or get on their push bikes.

Arsepedant

Very true. Our price in Canada is about half yours in England, and yet every time it goes up by a cent or two per litre, there’s a spike in transit ridership.

Jimbo 1

Santori. Your posts are longer than Arseblogs daily column.

santori

Campbell should not be forgotten. he is in the line up for a reason much as Coquelin was included last season. But the main player who has to step up beside Giroud is Walcott. He has goals in him and Wenger must find a way to effectively use both of them (Giroud Walcott) either in rotation to suit circumstance better or perhaps as a tandem for limited periods. The worry with Welbeck out is that there is no one else with height that can close to replicate the way Giroud plays should we head up against congestion tactics. This issue… Read more »

kaius

He’ll have missed about 9 months of football by the time we get him back, and Roy Hodgson seems much more concerned about it than anyone at the Club does. It’s surreal.

I remember a period when apart from the terrible incidents with Diaby and Ramsey, these kinds of long-term injuries were totally unexpected. Think people outside the Club see the anger from fans, but they forget all the times we sent out diabolical teams in crucial matches. Despite that recent history, the Club says we’re strong enough to cope. Time will tell.

- DFS

Hodgson has a lot of time for Danny Welbeck.

He’s played Welbeck at CF and Danny was the top scorer for the qualifiers until this round. I think Danny flourishes when he has someone backing him in a ‘key’ role.

I really hope that Danny is not out for that long – People underestimate his overall contribution to the team and he is missed already.

Dodgem

Neil #2

I may be repeating the same old line, and more, I might even be completely wrong in asking this….but what is it with our medical staff/fitness trainers/rehab specialists that it is such a common occurrence that an Arsenal player is injured, only for the initial time out to be lengthened significantly due to further injury/not having healed properly? I’ve heard that the club recently reevaluated medical procedure (don’t know if this is true or not), and that there was also some question of the fitness regime needing some consideration (don’t know if this is true either), but something seems off… Read more »

Giroud, Theo, Campbell. This is the front line Wenger thinks can challenge for title.
I’ll wait till May 2016 to make my judgement…no need crying over spilled milk.
But say what you want, this front line is not looking anywhere close to being title winning material. i honestly hope i’m proven wrong.

cygan'sbaldspot

Am… Alexis??!

Let us hope that Campbell can provide adequate cover because after him its only iwobi

Wenger the fashion icon

When he is back he’ll be LANS…

GK

I am an orthopedic surgeon (and Arsenal supporter from the US). I was concerned when I read that Welbeck’s injury was a “cartilage” injury. We do not have great, predictable surgical options for cartilage injuries. If this was a fracture, the recovery would be much more predictable. While, there are a few different surgical options they are not always completely successful, especially in the long term. Unfortunately, I wouldn’t be surprised if his knee continues to bother him for the rest of his career and/or this is potentially a career threatening injury. Another player who struggled with knee injuries that… Read more »

Crash Fistfight

An interesting and insightful post – thanks.

On your last point, is there any way the injury could have been discovered earlier/would investigative surgery have been an option earlier in the process?

GK

I would be surprised if Arsenal (and all professional sports teams) didn’t have a very low threshold to use MRI scans early and often for players with injuries. I suspect that they diagnosed the cartilage injury early using MRI and unfortunately, he just didn’t respond to non-operative treatment as they had hoped.

Gooners & Roses

Mourinho did though.

Mpls

I think that only proves his point. Mourinho is a chiseling weasel and was simply capitalizing on the ignorant scapegoating to increase the negativity on the Arsenal. That’s really his true ‘tactical’ ability. The rest is just sit deep and counter – with really expensive players.

Crash Fistfight

Chris Coleman is doing a good job copying that tactic at the moment – note how the moment Wales have to be the aggressor they’re useless.

hashtag

If Mourinho jumped off a cliff would you? Oh please, please jump of a cliff Mourinho…

Overmars

The traditional ‘out for a year when initially it was only a few weeks’ Arsenal injury.

Really Arsenalled this one right up.

Essy baba

I hope he comes back better than ever.we will miss u danny boy.

Ben

“Better than ever”.. shouldn’t be hard.. scoring a goal or two would be an improvement and controlling the football whilst running with it also.

Sarcasm aside I hope he gets well soon. (it’s monday let me off)

The JEFF

So after January

ni2tre

Makes the decision not to bring a replacement in very very strange indeed.

Is Welbeck so little thought that he doesn’t even require a replacement?

I like him, his versatility and direct play will be missed this season when our other strikers will go on their usual period of uselessness.

skinnyarse

6 months ? ouch ?

Gooners & Roses

What a pity. But then at Arsenal, this is unfortunately is all to familiar.

Mark

If we couldn’t find a striker in the Summer window when Wenger knew that Welbeck would be out for an extended period I don’t see him finding one for the cost he’s willing to pay in January. Only way he’ll move for one is if Giroud is injured and out for a long period as he was last year which forced him to buy Welbeck at the last minute. That is surely why he kept Campbell, had Welbeck been healthy or to return soon I am sure Campbell would have been sold. Not sure if he’ll play much of a… Read more »

Difficult to be an arsenal supporter this days. Tuned in to football today, only to find some so -called pundits talking trash about my arsenal. Turned off the t.v and logged into arseblog, only to find out that welbz will be out for six months, leaving only campbell as our recognized backup foward. There goes all the optimism i have before the season started. (sigh)

hashtag

Blame Wenger, blame the medical staff, the fact is, this is all Arseblog’s fault for once describing Danny Welbeck as “robust”.

Wangge

Fuck all this. We probably finish 3rd. No way we can compete with citeh. 2nd is obviously Chelsea.

Arsepedant

The Chel$ki that is currently three points behind us?

paul

The Arsecast bit about Welbeck with the “Ol Danny Boy” music and fake tears was out of order imo. 🙁

Cesc's Smarter Alter Ego - A Legendary Gunner

Hahaha… No signings in January too… Because by the end of Jan, he’ll be “Like a new signing” ?

santori

Here’s the other thing, people (media predominantly) keep complaining that Arsenal have failed to add outfield players or a striker. United only have Rooney up front as a recognisable quality despite spending over 80++m Giroud and Walcott have got to improve but we have potentially sufficient resource even without Welbeck. Neither Benzema nor Cavanni were available so I’m not sure how the press can characterise us persistantly as failing to get out targets. Who would Madrid or PSG replace them with. Would RM even sell without first being able to trumpet a purchase of marquee value like De Gea. The… Read more »
