Report: Arsenal 3-1 Sunderland (inc goals)

Arsenal: Cech, Bellerin, Mertesacker, Koscielny, Monreal, Flamini, Ramsey, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Campbell, Ozil, Giroud

Subs: Ospina, Chambers, Gibbs, Debuchy, Gabriel, Walcott, Iwobi

Arsenal got back to winning ways, running out 3-1 winners against Sunderland at the Emirates today, but it would be fair to say the scoreline wasn’t really reflective of the game of the Gunners performance.

Injuries meant changes with Joel Campbell and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain coming into the team, on the right and left respectively, and Aaron Ramsey deployed in his favoured central midfield position.

With Manchester City losing to Stoke the chance was there for Arsenal to make up some ground, but it was the visitors who had the first clear sight of goal as early as the 4th minute. Fabio Borini found himself clean through with just Petr Cech to beat but he hit his shot straight at the Arsenal keeper who saved with ease.

Aaron Ramsey’s response was to fizz a shot just wide of the Sunderland post with Pantilimon beaten all ends up, before Duncan Watmore headed over the crossbar as Sunderland’s bright start to the game continued. The Gunners had Cech to thank again as he pushed a Flamini block in his own box around the post, and it was anything but the assured performance Arsenal fans wanted to see.

The game settled down a bit then, Arsenal looked to get crosses into Olivier Giroud but with the Frenchman up against three central defenders it really didn’t seem like the best course of action. The worries at the back continued with Bellerin and Mertesacker forced into last ditch challenges to prevent goalscoring chances, the protection from the midfield was basically non-existent.

It was worrying, but then Arsenal burst into life and got the opening goal in the 345th minute. Giroud held the ball up well, laid it off to Ozil, who spotted the run of Campbell inside the full back. The German played a perfect ball in behind the Sunderland defence and the Costa Rican finished first time low into the net. 1-0.

After going ahead against West Brom and Norwich but failing to take the lead into the break, the challenge was for Arsenal to keep a clean sheet in the first 45 minutes. They looked to be on their way but when Koscielny conceded a free kick out wide, getting a yellow card in the process, Sunderland got back on level terms.

The ball was whipped low into the box, through a crowd of players, Giroud tried to clear but just deflected it into the top corner. 1-1.

There was a chance for Arsenal to go ahead just before the break when Nacho Monreal set up Ramsey, but the Welshman saw his effort clip the outside of the post, meaning the teams went in level and yet again Arsene Wenger’s side had let a lead slip.

There were no changes at the break from either side, and the pattern of the game remained much the same. Pedestrian football from Arsenal, with a real lack of craft and pace, while the visitors looked to exploit space on the break – Bellerin lucky to escape a yellow card for a pull back of Watmore’s shirt.

Anything good that did happen involved Ozil, and he combined well with Campbell to play Ramsey in behind but the Welshman was flagged offside, but Cech was called upon again to keep Arsenal in the game saving from Fletcher in the 57th minute. The Czech international then outdid himself from the resulting corner. After the ball came in, it was flicked on to the back post, Fletcher got there ahead of Mertesacker but Cech made a big stop on the line to stop them going ahead.

Sam Allardyce will have rued those misses because minutes later Arsenal were ahead again. An injection of pace into the build-up saw Monreal drive forward, he played it to Ramsey who clipped a cross into the box. Giroud, making up for the own goal in the first half, timed his run brilliantly, stopping and craning his neck to head home for 2-1.

The Frenchman then saw a header cleared off the line, and Arsene Wenger made his first change with Theo Walcott returning from injury to take the place of Oxlade-Chamberlain. It added some temporary zip to Arsenal’s game, but Sunderland again found themselves clean through on goal, thankfully Watmore’s shot was tame and straight at Cech.

Kieran Gibbs then came on to replace Campbell in the 76th minute, and Calum Chambers for the goalscorer Giroud in the 80th minute. Mesut Ozil pulled off one of the great flicks, before being fouled, and the final stages of the game were tense as Sunderland looked for an equaliser and Arsenal looked to hang on.

The goal we all feared almost came when Patrick Van Aanholt got in behind Bellerin, but his shot from the same position Joel Campbell scored from fizzed just inches over the bar. Ozil then set up Ramsey, his shot going straight at the keeper when he might have played it to a man outside him, as the game moved into 5 minutes of injury time.

But with just seconds left on the clock, Ramsey got on the of a deflected Chambers shot to make it 3-1 and to ensure the three points stayed in North London. 3-1.

Not a great performance, but three very valuable points.

From the rate of dwindling fortunes this season,i feel we might not have a winner by may.

Gooneron

Well played Giroud and Campbell. Scored both on the pitch and off it too

Pedant

Great result, second in the League!

Great to see Walcott coming on, Ramsey scoring from his favoured position.

With other results a fantastic weekend. Can we catch City though?

Pedant

And Cech and Ozil were both excellent.

Paul

” Can we catch City though?”
I see what you did there! 😉

Dave

I was literally just about to post a smart alec comment saying how we were a point ahead of City then your comment saved me the embarrassment of looking like an absolute muppet

Paul

Glad to be of assistance. 🙂

Paul

Call me Mezut!! 🙂 🙂

DanishGooner

What a foxy comment!! 🙂

Silent Stan's Content Mustache

World class goalie and midfielder won us 3 points today.

SG_Gooner

OG, OG, OG! hahahah

Paul

Very nice indeed!

Paul

and nice to see OG chipping in twice! 🙂

Tenzo (Theo's secret lover)

The most nauseating moment of the match: Fat Sam’s fat tongue darting in and out of his mouth as he chewed bubble gum like a farm animal.

The most beautiful moment of the match: Arsene wiping his mouth after slobbering during his little hop celebration after Aaron’s goal.

Fuck me, Ozil was glorious. Another Ozist, and his touches and tricks were sublime.

Le Jim

It was his corner that was cleared off the line, and his pass to Ramvo who shot straight at the keeper as well!

What a blöödy genius!

SGP_GNR

Finally! Thanks!

Fabulous

And other results going our way barring Leicester. Great week!

David C

Leicester have a very tough schedule coming up so that’ll see them drop back down to earth.

Man U were lucky to tie today at home against West Ham.

Shitbird

They get to play Chelsea, Leicester. What are you talking about.

Fabulous

Speaking of which, well done Bournemouth! Right up your arse Mourinho ???

bims lay

nah!, everything went our way mate……Leicester is no threat to the title challenge…they haven’t got the experience, and can’t maintain the consistency required, so their level will drop in the second half of the season! Leicester is just the flavour of the moment, and we’ve seen it before, like southampton, swansea, etc, last season and season before….they will play above themselves when playing any of the big five clubs, to pick up points, but relax against the smaller teams and get picked off in turn…my prediction?…six or seven, this season, then back to mid table-ish next season where they belong, so… Read more »

Canuck Gunner

Got the important 3 points and great to have the Manchester teams and spuds drop point.
And I felt Ramsey really needed that goal.

Iamtheantisp*r

So happy to have three points! Mesut is just…there aren’t enough words for how great he is.

Witoldo

On pace for 33 assists this season. Premier League record for a season is 20. That’s how good he’s been.

Le Jim

Holy shit that was nervy.

I love Mesut.

Laycawn

Somebody tell Theo we can’t afford any more injuries. Easy on Rambo.
Good win. Feels like ages since our last victory. Onwards and upwards.

GunnerDareMACEDONIA

what a difficult game, i knew it would be like this that’s why i didn’t get drunk last as i didn’t want to suffer heart-attack.

Gouner

I feel very uncomfortable about Campbell’s celebrations… Drop him

D

That has to be one sweaty tasting pacifier

Getso gunner

Glad with the 3 points, glad with the performance, glad with other EPL results, glad with everything this saturday

Xxxrob

Ozil was unplayable at times today! Campbell with another goal, the boy has end product in spades. Hoping he can continue to refine the rest of his game, there is no reason he can’t be this seasons Coquelin.
Good Rambo got on the score sheet (eventually).

Must admit this score line flattered us a bit, Sunderland played rather well today, 2-2 would not have shocked me in the slightest given our luck.

Glad we got the points! City and United shit the bed today too, happly days

Witoldo

There’s only one Coq!

George Wang

A good and important win, we needed it. Finally looking up.

rch

Ozil and Monreal top drawer.

Gooneron

Not forgetting Cech…

Dawn

Not forgetting anybody, they’re The TEAM

NewSeason

Hate to point out negativity after a win, but aren’t we getting a lot of own goals and deflections off our own players this season?

I can think of many times where Cech has had to bail us out due to the latter reason.

Anyway glad it didn’t influence the results today. 3 points, YAY!!

Andy Mack

Just ‘bad luck’ when they’re deflections like today. Hopefully we’ll finally get some ‘Good Luck’ payback soon.

Sanogo for Ballon D'Or

So many good things at once :’) Walcott back in shape and not rusty at all, another Ozist, Giroud and Ramsey get a goal. Kudos to Wenger too, substitution game on point.

Arse Sutra

watched fever pitch yesterday….
at the start of the movie when the kid(Colin Firth) goes to Highbury the first time and asks his dad whats the next home game…Dad says Sunderland..
and the end which we all know..the requirement was a win by 2 goal margin against pool..thats exactly what we need on Wednesday in UCL….
COINCIDENCE !!!! eh …….

gazgoon

Fun movie (love the end! ) but I read somewhere Firth is a spud? Might explain why his character is so bitter.

DACatHome

Don’t care about anything at the moment; three points will do me!

GobiLux

Arsenal burst into life and got the opening goal in the 345th minute.

I know they exaggerated with the amount of extra time but it wasn’t quite that bad 😉

BringBackSeaman

Maybe Blogs was thinking of the average time between Chelsea wins

KenyanArse

Ramssseeeeeeyyyy!!!!

Why do you ask my name? It is beyond understanding

Wretched game to watch and horribly nervous performance. Sunderland deserved something out of the game in truth and they will stay up on that performance. But who cares. 3 points. And Man City, Man United and Spurs all dropped points today. And there’s a very, very long journey home in the wind and dark for Sam Allardyce with nothing nice to think about. Happy days.

Glaswegian Gooner

Ozil’s recent form:

Games: 13
Goals: 4
Assists: 11

Nicking a living as they say.

Daan van Lith

I believe its 12 assists. Anyway Ozil is awesome

Glaswegian Gooner

Oops, you’re right!

I AM ARSENAL

Monreal MOTM.. Only one in the back four who can actually defend right now…Excellent going forward and linking up with Ozil and Ramsey for the goal.

Ozil was Majestic yet again.

Very good second half from Ramsey

Good to see a few players back just as we lose some.

Trez

Best LB in the league for a while now. Gibbs has no chance of displacing him.

GunneRonnie

Flamini keeps his unbeaten record at the Emirates!

GunneRonnie

Maestro Ozil has overtaken Messi in the most number of assists record in the last 5 years in Europe !
All hail our world class assist king!

Canon Fodder

‘345th minute’ Arseblog; that was a very long game! No wonder we looked knackered at the end of the match.

Wenger admirer

I think these are a massive, massive 3 points. With hindsight, they could be season-saving. If things had gone wrong today, imagine the doomers & gloomers dominating the blogs and the confidence denting effect on the players. It could have been the beginning of the end, now it might be the beginning of stabilization and getting the season back on track.

Heroldgoon

OG with an OG sounds fair.

steveafc forever

Battling result today and were above all the teams that count we all know Leicester ain’t going to win the league.

Heroldgoon

Leicester are a turn of the year away from reality of a midtable finish.

neutral

If we don’t, I hope Leicester do win the league. They deserve it on their performances so far, but I think they have played fewer of the top teams, we’ll know more after Christmas when everyone has player each other at least once.

It is always nice to see surprises in the league, Leicester top, Chelsea 14th! ha ha

Crystal Balls

Chamberlain is breaking my heart

crs

Not at our best but a huge 3 points and with city utd and the scum all dropping points a great weekend for us. A bit worried at times how open we were with this ramsey/flamini centre mid partnership. Rambo needs to chose his bursts forward a lot more cautiously, but that being said I do think he offers us something in the middle, whereas cazorla is a great passer who keeps it neat and ticking over Rambo is always very direct looking to make something happen and whilst he can be sloppy he’s also very impactful there as shown… Read more »

Paul

This season is becoming like watching the Grand National!

Paul

Meaning anyone can win it…

eduardo

Ramsey man of the match, Ozil on his game as usual, Giroud and Campbell shutting up the boo boys,
Also great to see the Ramsey – Giroud partnership bloom again.
Ox and Theo clearly need game time to get their A game going, hopefully we will see it on Wednesday

Arsepedant

Ramsey was poor for the most part and should have had a hat trick well before he actually did score. However, there were some promising moments from him as well. With a run of games partnering Flamini in front of the defence I think he has the potential to get back to the form of two seasons ago. But to do that, he’s going to have to play a lot better than he did today.

CJ

Ramsey definitely man of the match. Totally bossed the midfield and was our main attacking threat/outlet. Got himself in very good positions in front of goal. He’s always more likely to score than Carzola, as he personally wants goals. That one moment where he effortlessly jigged around two Sunderland defenders close to touch line underscores his confidence. He is not a Coq-esque player so people shouldn’t expect him to be throwing himself in at tackles every minute. Even so, he won the ball back plenty. If he didn’t play today, it is very likely that we wouldn’t have won. Folks… Read more »

Die Hard Gooner

Ozil is just going assist crazy right now. There isnt a better player in the league right now. We need him if we are going to beat olympiacos 2-0 on their own backyard. Giroud was poor other than the goal as he had a lot of misplaced passes, so was chamberlain. Ramsey was good but he really needs to learn placing the ball instead of using power all the time. Monreal was great. Not complaining thlough just pointing out what they can improve on.

Dawn

Giroud assisted Ozil’s assist for the first goal as well as many good off the ball movements! Most underrated player ever!

Bergkamp

Ozil is eeerm…..I don’t know what 2 say. And to those that believe that we should have signed shneiderlin to replace/compete Le coq, well He is injured now. footballers are humans afterall, save Ozil and bergkamp

Rectum_Spectrum

MESUT OZIL.

neutral

and MONREAL

David G

Arsene deserves more credit than he gets. He is guiding towards the title. After back to back FA cups. And he listens to Bob Marley! (Although he only buys albums that are top top quality and can improve his collection).

DanishGooner

Hahahaha……I will laugh forever!!

Dan D

Was always going to be tricky but a win is a win.

What Ramsey gives you is energy and goals from midfield so if he and Flamini can sort the defensive side all could be very well.

Ox really needs to step up now, he’s no kid anymore. I do like Campbell, think he has genuine potential if given a run and I like his approach to the game, being on hand to do his fair share of work off the ball – something the Ox could learn from.

Ozil – class.

COYG!! Big win that.

Robb1971

Sorry but Ramsey was very poor in passing, shooting and decision making.
Flamini did well and given that Ramsey does not seem interested in defending.
Good result, good Walcott is back.

eduardo

Ramsey’s poor passing – only most of any player in the BPL on Saturday, 114 completed passes, a 92% pass completion rate
shooting – scored
decision making – an assist

the non stop berating of Ramsey by some is the most stupid thing on the web.

Cape Town Gooner

Ramsey like too much attention. He plays for the move to RM or Barca. He slows down our game and its all about him. Ox has to pick up his game. I would be worried if I was him I was substituted ahead of Campbell. Ozil is just marvelous to watch.

Holyviper

There’s something about the way Ramsey plays. He’s the most rabid of them all (even more than Sanchez, come to think about it), which works in two ways: he sometimes puts himself in attacking situations which are so fantastically Arsenalesque, unorthodox and breathtaking to watch: but at the same time he is so… casual and wasteful in his ‘let’s-try-this-absurd-pass’ it infuriates a viewer used to expecting a certain style of possession. Makes sense?

Cape Town Gooner

Ramsey infuriates me!

Alex

Nice to see everyone happy. Me too.

Who is leading the team? At the own goal, who is saying “Giroud you fucking cunt! Can you even play football you fat bastard!?”

“DO YOUR FUCKING JOB!”

Where is the:

John Terry
Vincent Kompany
Roy Keane
Patrick Viera

….who is going to drag this team to where t belongs? Wenger’s slopey shoulders surely not!

I bet there wasn’t even so much as a slice of pizza thrown in the tunnel at half time.

Arsepedant

What the fuck is that nonsense about? No-one wants any of those cunts in our team and Giroud is presently the fifth-leading scorer in the league despite having only played two thirds of the minutes this year.

Eternal Titi Berg Pat Nostalgia

The nonsense is about down vote baiting, I guess.

Cygan

Actually we want Viera-but trolling sometimes is funny

George

Ouch! Bit harsh. Cech gave Giroud a pat on the shoulder, so that’s a different approach to leadership right there.

gazgoon

I’m sorry but didn’t we just win with acobbled together midfield combination (excepting Mesut, nothing short of exquisite).

DanishGooner

-welll….to find the first two, look DOWN the table……the third is a bitter lunatic and for the fourth…..I hope we can wellcome him home sometime….:-)

-in this team, the collective is the leader…..

mashkeyboardgetusername

Good win, especially as Sunderland knew Bournemouth had a guaranteed three points today and a so were scrapping for everything to avoid dropping into the relegation zone.

Al Gilmore

Look back over previous title winning seasons and games like today will have happened. But you forget that in may among all the glory. This is why people griping after today is ridiculous. Just get behind a team who are second despite a horrendous injury crisis…and yet we are still told our squad is weak. Man Citeh are supposed to have the best squad and yet take Kompany, Toure, Silva or Aguero out of it and they struggle. We are told if Wenger bought Fernando or Fernandinho we would not lose on wet away trip to places like Stoke

d original naija gooner

On Ramsey in his favored role for me, he has to be technically superior in our UCL game. Olypkos will play on the counter all night long. Can’t have him bombing forward and leaving all the DM work to the Flam. Has to be smarter and I reckon that it will be key to our success on the night. He needs to get it though. I hope he does. The key to SantiCoq success was that our Santi upped his DM game big time, and then perfected spreading passes from deep, picking perfect moments to move up. The Ram has… Read more »

George

Phew. Wasn’t easy, wasn’t always pretty, but with some other results a massive and very welcome 3 points.

Alexstratz

So we’re virtually top of the league. Where are the people who said our season is finished?

Pedant

I’m sure Fatgooner will be on soon to tell us.

Shitbird

The 345th minute. That’s what it felt like.

Some bright moments, brighter than the last few games at least, but you probably have to thank Fabio Borini for the win first if you’re going to name those responsible.

And Cech. Holy shit.
