Yayaya: Sanogo bags a hat-trick for Charlton

Is there something in the water at Charlton? Alex Song went there a raw, undisciplined central midfielder and came a back a slightly less raw, undisciplined central midfielder who we eventually sold to Barcelona for £15m.

Then Francis Coquelin went there, everyone got injured, and he came back a snarling, biting, midfield dynamo.

And after an unhappy sojourn at Ajax, it looks like Charlton have helped Yaya Sanogo’s fortunes change. On his first start for the club, he scored after just 7 minutes, grabbing an equaliser for the Addicks who had gone behind to Reading in the 4th minute.

The visitors extended their lead to 3-1 before half-time, but Sanogo scored again in the 49th minute to keep them in the game. Then with time running out, the Frenchman bagged his hat-trick goal in the 84th minute, before pulling up with cramp/shock and being replaced with just a couple of minutes remaining.

Unfortunately, a late Reading goal consigned Charlton to a 4-3 defeat but Sanogo can feel happy with his days work. These are his first league goals in English football and hopefully the little kick-start his career need.

Yaya Sa-some-goals.

Finally living up to the name SanoGOAL!

Gooneron

Now its more like Yaya Somemoregoals

Jack Lewis

Don’t you mean SaNO-GOALS!?!?!

Spooner

Haha, I went to this game today as it’s nearby & someone got me a ticket. After the first goal, my reaction was to say to my mate ‘you’ve just witnessed something special, a goal from Sanogo..’. I was probably cheering his hatrick more loudly than the Charlton fans. Nice moment.

SDB

if charlton want him, sell him and we can put this embarrassment behind us

Marge

Well aren’t you just a big bundle of love?

Stan

If only we could sell supporters like you…

Goone's Farm

We’d be rich enough to buy 11 Messis and a pack of gum.

Naija Gunner

Let’s try. Starting With him

Arsetronomy

I LOVE YOU!!

santori

Don’t write him off.

Still young and has attributes to provide the sort of service GIroud does. Giroud’s game isn’t based on pace so he can go on for a while which is perfect timing for Sanogo to continue development. He gives us a different sort of tool to use much like Giroud does but he has to continue to improve. This loan will do him a world of good as it did Coquelin (whom as I would recall many wrote off too)

Judging by lack of any comments, lessons not learnt.;)

bims lay

I agree. I admit he is one player that completely baffles and frustrates, but i am one of those that agrees he has got bags of raw talent. I watched this guy play a couple of times and both times, he was a substitute and he left me scratching my head wondering why its not happening for him?……Here is a player that appears to have everything in theory required to become a fearsome top striker….height, pace, power, technique, basically the physical presence of Giroud, but with more pace and finesse on the ball, technically sound too. This boy can do… Read more »

If we decide to sell, I think we should sell upcoming forwards with a buyback clause for 2-3 years. This way, the clubs will give them more game time as they’ll either get a solid forward or good money if we buy them back. Sure we will pay more but we’ll get a proven striker that will still be a bargain price comparatively.

denten

Given that he’s at Charlton, these goals can be interpreted as just his first few steps to becoming our new Henry.

Jay Song

Wow Charlton must bo our lucky charm.

Can we also send THEO, OX and Giroud there for a few months?

Tariq

I wouldn’t send Olivier anywhere. He’s doing quite well IMO, even if he’s not banging them in. He holds the team at the attacking end.

Jay Song

Agreed.
I just wanted to say that these players need better finishing touches!!

Tariq

“Yaya Sa-some-goals.”

Sums up our current predicament quite aptly.
Wish Eyezil could provide some unmissable assists. The kind that even Yaya Sa-No-goals couldn’t miss.

#YaGunnersYa.

Lettra

FFS!!

AmericanGooner11

I’ve lived a healthy lifestyle, I’ve stayed away from cigarettes, always put on sunscreen etc. But none of that matters, because this post just gave me cancer.

Mark Hughes

He does but the players still miss them. Arsenal have created 327 chances in the premier league of which, 105 were created by Özil.

Timothy Lumsden

Really?

Timothy Lumsden

Sorry. Meant for tariq.

ICanSeeForNiles

I think you mean, “Yaya Sa-mo’ goals.”

Martin Finley

Gooner Claude said he would run naked down the street if Sanogo bagged a Hattrick. Personally I was content with running naked through the living room.

glovedhand

Ya Sanogo Ya!

H2k

I remember being at the cup final against Hull. People were worried when Sanogo came on for Poldi after an hour. He might not have scored, but he was what I would call a disrupter. He made the defenders nervous, which made space for others, which helped us go on to win. He is now in the period where that rawness needs to come good. A bit of faith put into him, with some regular game time, with 1 or 2 goals, and he will really get going. Hearing the news from Charlton seems like the start of that. I… Read more »

Many years back I got stuck in Le Mans and filled in time watching Le Mans play. They had a young striker who was much worse than Sanogo, his name was Drogba. Really Drogba spent all his time on the ground usually at least 20 yards from the ball.
I’m NOT saying Sanogo will ever be good enough to get in our 1st team without major injuries again or get to the same level as Drogba but for a free transfer he could be worth the risk if we can keep getting him out on loan….

SizC

How is poldi doing?

goonerestgooner

My Instagram feed is full of his posts on a daily basis…. So pretty good I guess

i miss kanu

his first league goals are a hat trick. something here somewhere.

realseriousgooner

While at Palace on loan he juggled over a defender against City and I almost shit my pants. The kid has talent in that raw, gangly body. Maybe this spell at Charlton will give him time to develop the form he needs to build confidence. In the meantime, see if he can bottle some Charlton water and send it to the Grove. COYG

Jamaican Gooner

Can we send the Ox and Gnarby there too???

Al Gilmore

I really have never understood the stick this lad gets. I guess it’s the ‘he’s not Cavani/Benzema/Higuain” syndrome. But he was essentially a free transfer. A punt. Raw talent that the boss thought he could polish. And we have seen flashes from him. He needs to stay fit – like all players the key to improvement is game time. Take the Ox for example. Never fit enough for long enough to claim a regular starting spot. I dunno if Sanogo will ever be good enough for Arsenal. Probably not given that where we all want to be is at a… Read more »

davi

I know, it’s like that with everybody these days. A couple of bad games and all of a sudden you start hearing worst gk/defender/striker/signing ever. It’s ridiculous. People were going insane about Ospina recently, who certainly hasn’t been a poor player for us – far from it! Sanogo had a really good start to his time at Arsenal and then dropped off a bit, missing some very good chances. I think there was an injury in between as well so that has to be considered, particularly for a young player. I don’t know either if Sanogo will be good enough… Read more »

Arsepedant

And to be fair, Sanogo also had a couple of perfectly good goals disallowed because of bad referees.

Stillmatic

Tbf, a lot of that is to do with Arsenal making room for him by not offering Afobe a new contract. In that 18 month period, Afobe has quadrupled his value and jumped 2 leagues into the PL, whilst Yaya has just scored his first goals today.

Andy Mack

When Afobe was needed, he was injured and when he finally got fit Sanogo had more experience for the couple of times we needed someone. Afobe needed to get experience so had to go on loan (which he didn’t initially ‘shine’ at) and then we bought DW. I’ve followed Afobe for years and knew he’d come good eventually (along with Aneke… where is he now!) but regrettably the timing was wrong…

shokim

Chuks Aneke is currently plying his trade in the Belgian Pro League for Zulte Waregem.

Mpls

He didn’t cost 50m + and drain the ‘massive war chest’, so he was DOA for some.

Crash Fistfight

All fair enough, but he does take up one of the ‘non-home grown’ spots within the 25 man squad, so being that he has never looked like a first team player since he’s been at the club, it’s essentially wasting a spot in the squad.

It’s not his fault, though, and he didn’t have to be registered in the first team squad.

I still don’t see anything about him – looks like a pacier Peter Crouch to me.

locksley444

It’s definitely the syndrome you’re referring to. Arsenal as a club needed a starting option badly at the time sanogo was signed. Sure enough, he’s given games right away and just like any other tall forward, he makes himself look clumsy and doesn’t really bring any end product to the game. The fans are rightly angry not because he’s bad and never going to come good, but because he wasn’t what we needed at that time. Arsenal football club can sign an upcoming talent to Polish slowly, but the priority at that point was a quality striker to start regularly.

The Beast

Recall him please we need goals now.

The Car2n Goon

Didn’t Charlton also give us Corporal Jenks?

AntiSpud

Awww I didn’t see that game will have to check that. Great news hopefully he can build on that. Damned! If we knew we could send lord bendtner there. Oh well. Those who saw the game, how was the celebration? Hope he worked on that too.

davi

People seem to have forgotten his early performances against Liverpool and the first half hour against Bayern (which was unfortunately cut short by a red card) – he is capable of scaring the life out of top class defenders and looked a good finisher at Auxerre. I’ve always thought there’s a quality player in there but it’s taking time to come out. His first goal today looked class btw. IF he can get some consistency to his game, both in how he plays and how often he plays, he’ll show he’s got a lot more going for him than Giroud.

AntiSpud

Add to that when he came on in the FA Cup final. He made a lot of nuisance and giroud was free and the game relaxed. He is good just needs a tilt, cool head in front of the goal and a proper celebration

Timothy Lumsden

Brilliant. Nice on yayaya.

Vonnie

I’m really pleased for him, he looks happy at Charlton and this can only be good for his confidence. A lot of people have been really nasty about him but I like him, and I think he’ll come good.

goonerestgooner

“Pulled up with cramp/shock”

Hahahahahaha, this is why I love Arseblog

Arsepedant

Scored a hat trick and got injured in the same game. Bring him back, he’s ready.

Arsetronomy

LOL

Ben

He’s playing in a league that suits his quality. Not surprising

AntiSpud

If you know football you should know that there isn’t great difference between the leagues mate. Premiership teams have good quality in depth squad that’s all.

I’m happy for him… I’ve always felt he’ll become something very special for us. I’ve told guys that he’s got a bit of Kanu, Anelka and Trezeguet in him. He’s only too raw for when he was brought into the Club… With little tilt and confidence, that guy can really go on a long scoring spree. Dou you still remember his first few goals for Arsenal? A hat-trick in the Emirates Cup! A good goal against Dortmund… And now another hat-trick for Charlton. Go on son, make me proud!

Paul

No not for me sorry…

Andy Mack

For us he was also unlucky in having a good PL goal ruled out by the usual crap officials…

Paul

One more sleep until Manure….COYG!

assistantref

How many of you actually watched the video?

It is the most hilariously Sanogo thing ever: even his hat trick was ungainly. His first goal comes from an accidental dribble, and his second and third goals go in off the goalkeeper.

Trezy

Not getting carried away…fact is he also scored 4 against benfica in pre season, what happened after that??
Happy he scored today, but this shouldn’t be an excuse not to sign a world class striker if one is available.
No more of not signing Alonsos because you don’t want to kill Denilsons.

Crash Fistfight

I think the Alonso non-signing was more to do with Liverpool’s side of the affair. At the time, they were trying to sign Gareth Barry from Villa and were then going to offload Alonso in his place. I think the fact that they couldn’t get Barry was the reason for them not selling Alonso, rather than the extra £1m (or whatever it was) that they wanted for him.

Hi-brid

Wait, what…?

kafka

Good for him. Let’s cool it though, remember Ajax had little good to say about him, they are not mean, but still said something like ‘we had very little to work with here.’

What I don’t understand is, why do people abuse players so much on the web. If you don’t think he is good enough, let him get on with his life and ignore him. Just leave him alone if he is not playing for the first team and costing Arsenal points.

shokim

I hope Sanogo can come good for us. The kid certainly has talent. Didn’t he also score a hat trick in Emirates Cup 2014?

shokim

My bad, Sanogo scored 4 vs Benfica!

ramgooner

My guess is we loaned him to ajax to learn the technical aspects of the game. He is definitely one for the premier league and especially for Arsenal. Sanogo is that unpredictable player you want in your team.
No doubt he is a beast but I’m not sure about his basic fitness. We have had enough crocked players under wenger. I don’t want this trend to continue.
