Dutch striker linked with summer move

Both the Mirror and the Telegraph are reporting that Arsenal are keen on signing Netherlands international Vincent Janssen.

The 21 year old has had an outstanding debut campaign in the Eredivisie, scoring 28 goals for AZ Alkmaar and the national team, with Arsenal scouts in attendance throughout the season.

Perhaps Wenger is reminded of another Dutch youngster he signed who developed into a top class striker (before developing into a top class twatbasket).

Arsenal are keen to upgrade their striking options this summer, and with established world class talent not easy to find and possibly out of reach anyway, developing somebody with that potential seems the next obvious way of doing it.

At the moment we’re inclined to go a bit heavy on the poo-o-meter, but let’s see where it goes.

Also, stand by for an all new and improved poo-o-meter – coming soon!

Just a heads up, Holland didn’t qualify for the Euros

Drabwilly

Part of the Dutch European Championship squad? Didn’t Holland fail to qualify?

Squillaci Assault

Must have been this young chap’s fault…

MaJ

Just played one game for Holland. Against England.

J Bird

His first call up was the last game against England. Nothing to do with him. For what it’s worth, I’ve kept a keen eye on this guy for a while and he has the makings of a complete striker.

Cech's Helmet

Seems like the mobile type of striker we need but I still would prefer a player well-established in the BPL like Lukaku or similar. Or go for a ready-made world class striker like Lewandowski , why not? We have the money to spend so lets be certain as we can be in our purchase. Whatever AW does he MUST sign a WCS this summer!

Mpls

What’s to say he’d be the only striker signing?
Heh. Heh Heh.
Meh.

Abhi

He’s a good looking guy..so he’s probably shit

OD

Was thinking that exactly.

still crying about it

“He’ll be part of the Dutch European Championship squad this summer”

Unfortunately we dutchies didnt make it to the tournament…

I don’t think Janssen will be a great addition btw.

Chris

I actually don’t hate the prospect of this. Would make sense for us to try and develop a younger player in a great striker, and there’s no sense in being held to ransom by a team like Everton for a similar player in Lukaku.

We probably can’t attract the likes of Lewandowski, Griezman or Benzema and there’s not a chance in hell that we’ll fork out 50-60 million on a player like Lukaku. This could be a good option, plus the last time I underestimated a player coming from a foreign league he ended as our player of the month.

sambo

Similar player in Lukaku? with all due respect Lukaku’s stats are way up there for the past 2-3 seasons and he is only 22

MaJ

Janssen is labeled as the “Dutch Vardy”. Good work rate, scores goals and first played at lower league clubs.

sambo

I would also add 50-60 million for Lukaku is a good bargain. Even if in 5 years he’s gotten 10% better and still netting 20+ league goals a season we will have a player in his prime age for resale. Count shirt sales etc and whatever else it is a great bit of business in the end. Good assist rate playing for a struggling Everton side. Only problem is Everton are in the money now, but he wants and needs champions league football. Ibra is always around?

TobyC

I wish we’d buy Higuain 🙁

Seán

I don’t think Holland are in Euro 2016 so we won’t get to see as much of him!

Mikey

I’d like Shane Long and Lukaku

Naytron

Was it something he said?

spinner

What’s Shane Long’s agent doing on this website?

lordgunner

shane long lol

Smart-Arse

What’s so objectionable? Long’s a good player.

Mikey

Oh.
Robbie Keane then?

Isaiah Rankin

In a world where there are 8 Jan Michael Vincents and 16 Quadrants…

ThurrkeyOnRye

Scoring that many in the Dutch leave is really hard to judge on quality. For every Luis Suarez, there’s a jozy altidore.

MaJ

Alves. Netted 30+ goals for Heerenveen.

Naz

Yeah but Alves was a Brazilian footballer therefore statistically 50% likely to eat his own weight in chocolate in any given off season!

Scott from London, Ontario, Canada

Hey come on! Jozy Altidore plays for Toronto FC.

Hmph… Don’t you just love how I’m proving your point here?

Arsenalnut

True. Jozy scored more than this Janssen at AZ. Didn’t bring his service with him to Sunderland. Was terrible in EPL. Dutch defenders seem to transfer their skills better than strikers to the EPL.

assistantref

To be fair, Van Persie was always a top class twatbasket. Didn’t need any development for that.

Dan Hunter

He was sold by this manager to his main rivals…yet he gets called a cuntbasket..

Bobby P

He forced through the move and United aren’t our main rivals but apart from that you are spot on

Tony Hall

It’s all very well people keep slagging RVP going to Man U because to quote him *he felt the club wasn’t going in the right direction and didn’ t match his ambition etc etc* trouble is he was right. We as a club, those two FA cup wins aside have stagnated and are no closer to winning the PL than before and in his first year with Man U they won the league. He stayed with as all those years when we did not win bugger all so why should he not have one last crack at the whip with… Read more »

Rob67

That’s entirely correct Tony. But why cite the truth when you can use vitriolic abuse to assuage your frustration. Trouble is it – the va – never does. It’s merely a case of turn up the volume for next time. Sad but true !

John C

Totally agree, i hold no hard feelings towards him, or Cesc, or Nasri etc etc because it was them that was let down by the club and manager. Wenger was so busy not killing Diaby/Denilson/Bendtner’s careers that he failed to give the likes of RVP and Cesc the team their talents deserved, his priorities were the wrong way round.

They’ve all been proven correct with their decisions to leave and have the medals to prove it.

Mississippi Gunner

I got hard feelings. i don’t need to retell Cesc’s story, we all know it. RVP, buddy said he had bigger ambition and has one premier league title with Manure to show for it. Real easy to have bigger ambition when you get a bigger paycheck for it. Nasri is just a fucking deluded cunt who thinks Man City is superior to Arsenal, but apparently holds no value for prestige, history, and not being created by a random billionaire who likes football. Fuck all of em, sure you can look from their perspectives to prove a point about Arsenal but… Read more »

Naz

Do you genuinely think a non Arsenal supporting player gives a crap about the decision of either staying with us and finishing 2nd-4th or winning the league at another club? Not only that, but a chance to win the league and earn more money. It’s an absolute no brained.

Mississippi Gunner

I don’t think I implied that they should care. But I’m not going to forgive a player for joining a rival club bc they had practical reasons, or think that Arsenal let them down. Fuck that. We made them. They could have had loyalty but they didn’t

Stillmatic

I’ve said this for a while now and I agree, I feel he only gets heat because he went to United.

For all those that attack him because he said he didn’t believe the squad was good enough, he was right wasn’t he? Heck we’re not good enough now with Cech, Ozil and Sanchez, imagine sitting down and being told by your manager that Theo is a “world class forward” when you train with him daily and know how shit he is.

PodB

Its called loyalty and sticking with the ship after spending 2 years on the treatment table. could’ve been a legend. Now just a Dutch skunk. PS: we need to sign two world-class strikers in case one gets injured. You never know with our medical record.
Hope Spurs bottle it against Saints and we even it up with us at home to Villa and them in front of 60,000 screaming Geordies on the last day. that would be a fun day to end the painful fall front he summit but well done Leicester. Truly amazing …

Acornsgems

To use your logic, United, that Premier League win aside, have stagnated. You could even argue they’ve gone backwards.
You can’t just pick and choose what trophies to discountenance in order to make your point.

Fabulous

Yup. It was also reported that this manager signed on the dotted line for that twatbasket

Fabulous

Before the inevitable misunderstanding occurs, that was 100% sarcasm

Mikey

VanPersie was right, but people don’t want to hear that.

lordgunner

he was rigth lo leave us after one full season with us after year been broken and us keeeping faith in him (with many fan saying we should sell him too)? no he is a cunt i m sorry when a manager keep faith in you when so many would have get rid of him after 2 season wenger stand by him and finally when he look like his injuries problem got sorted he stabb Wenger in the back . fuck that

Ricardo

Does he get injured a lot. I suggest you reduce the poo-meter if he does.

He plays like Van Persie, with flailing arms, hungry, and neat touches.

occam's hatchet

According to Transfermarkt, no injuries in past 2 seasons while starting in virtually every match. This season he has 56% shot accuracy (compare with Vardy at 58%). Of course I’m laughing at myself for looking that (and all his other stats) up. I usually don’t pay much attention to rumours, especially this early. I guess it’s a sign of how desperate I am to see new strikers in this squad.

Dan Hunter

I’m sure Arsene will fix his injury record right up

Ricardo

Well, Podolski and Giroud were bought very early when they joined Arsenal (think it was May and June). Arsene did not have to wait until August 31st to buy them.

If we really wanted him, the POO-Meter should be wrong.

C J

Did anyone see Eduardos goal tonight in the Europa? God I wish he hadn’t broken his leg that time

AJ

Can someone shed light on what happens to the team finishing 4th in case Liverpool win the Europa League?

Shitbird

Nothing. They get the CL playoff.

Holyviper

Then the top 3 + Liverpool go directly, and 4th goes to playoffs. 5 total English teams then.

broken red army

Yeah, each league could have 2 plus for winning european competition, IF the winning teams aren’t qualified from league position.

Arsenalnut

He didn’t break his leg. Tiny broke it for him despite not “being that type of player”.

Tony Hall

He don’t look half bad either, that first goal is sublime.

Sean

His Scout Nation compilation makes for pleasant viewing I have to say:

https://youtu.be/5i-4h9vmIJQ

Sean

Well this is embarrassing. My phone didn’t initially display the video in the article, hence the chronic waste of people’s time I’ve graced you with above. Be a bunch of dears and accept my apologies.

Shitbird

Klopp envy. There, I said it.

Bobby P

A striker that can finish? It’ll never work.

Rohith J

I am going to go ahead and believe that he’s going to scire 25 goals in his debut season with us while Sanchez scores 30. That’s that sorted.

sighburn

Looks a decent player and with inflated markets and our cautious spending habits a young player seems to be a reasonable thing to expect. Am really interested to see how we go about fixing our striker problem

Deano

Wouldn’t get carried away about a Dutch league player these days. I remember a luuk de Jong having a sensational season and Monchungladbach paying a rather large fee for him. He was terrible for them that poor I think he had a stint at Newcastle. Let’s not forget the much over hyped Memphis Depay (going to be the best player in the world) Hahahaha yeah right.

If we do sign hope he bucks a recent trend!

beNZed

His chocolate leg looks a lot better developed than Van Bumhole’s was at such a young age. Pretty impressive prospect, judging on the compilation there.

alexis trousers

PROS
Can finish with both feet
Knows his way in and around the box
Great left foot

CONS
Not mobile enough.
Neither strong or pacey

A shorter, flawed Van Persie styled striker.

to the left

“Can finish with both feet” is a huge plus. Too many times this season, great chances were created but just fell on the wrong foot. Giroud, Ozil, Monreal can only go left, while Alexis, Walcott, Ramsey (galatasaray excluded) can only go right.

Unless it is Messi, of course, where the left foot can score from any angle.

GHunner

Is he also left footed with no other special skill besides being able to link up play and (hopefully) run quick?

Chuffy

I hope this rumour is false, because if we sign him, it shows the same lack of ambition as before. The Dutch league is not the same as the premier league. We should looking for a world class striker, like a Lewandowski, Aubameyang or Higuain type. This is not the time for Wenger to start buying strikers who may come good in 3 years time. It should be his last season, at least go out with a real statement of intent eh?

JAL

Spot on. I really want Wenger to go all out this summer and surprise everyone with some marque signings. But I just cannot see it. Sit back and watch Chelsea, City, Utd, Liverpool et al beat us to it.

Stillmatic

So you would’ve said the same if Wenger did the exact same thing to sign a certain Suarez?

Deano

Saurez had a nibble on someone in the Dutch league that distanced a few potential suitors from him. Liverpool took an £22.8m gamble on him

Deano

Kuyt angle has scored a hat full in the Dutch league as well. Maybe we souls sign him up. Come with a free bus pass…

Deano

Should^

Dan Hunter

He left the WWE to play in the Dutch league??

Deano

Aptly named after getting away with blatantly wrestling our player down in the area champions league 2007

winterburn 87

Although a world class striker is a must buy next season, don’t forget we also desperately need a commanding cb to organize n also be the leader of our defense, someone like Barzagli or Bonucci from Juve. .We have enough money right? ?

Trez

Well he could either be a rvp, rvn, suarez or a afonso alves,de jong, Jozy altidore.
Wenger needs to go all out for a world class striker and not another project.

ScotchEggsRules

How accurate has the ‘poo-o-metre’ proven so far? Early days I know.

Ex-Priest Tobin

Well, he looks an upgrade on Giroud, but then you could play my pet dog as a striker and it would be an upgrade on Giroud.

Chamakh

Well depends on which Giroud shows up. The 2015 or the 2016 one.

SuperTom7

Yay! New poo-o-meter. Looking forward to it

Frank

Difficult one cause although I would prefer to go all out and buy an established striker for next season I dont want to be sitting here in a couple of seasons with this guy a world beater at some other club thinking remember that time we could’ve got this guy on the cheap, like our infamous near misses with Messi, Ronaldo, Ibrahimovic etc, etc. I reckon we get this guy and an established ST, cover our bases!

Stillmatic

Agreed.
Everyone is crying for Aubemyang now, but probably would’ve gone nuts if we bought him at the time we could’ve before he went to Dortmund.

Deano

Could be argued Dortmund signed Aubameyang in the knowledge of Lewandowski not committing to signing a new contract and having time for him to blend into the squad. Much like they have An improving Ramos available if Aubameyang decides to push for a move. Doubt he will though

Heroldg

“Arsenal are keen to upgrade their striking options
this summer, and with established world class
talent not easy to find and possibly out of reach
anyway, developing somebody with that potential
seems the next obvious way of doing it.”

Blogs trying to convince us the Arsene way.

That is total Bollocks

Kahn?Kanu!

Those are all valid points but a player like this should not be seen as the answer to our striker problems. I believe if you throw enough money at it you can lure players even if Real, barca ect are competing, how else did city/chelsea/PSG/blackburn sign all those players they did?

DIarra

No matter how much money you throw some club will always match the offer with higher wages. The list of clubs who can pay ridiculous amounts is pretty long now: City, PSG, United, Real, Chelsea. And Barca to some degree (Neymar).

For example Aubameyang is probably going for crazy money in the summer and still wouldn’t be a guaranteed success in EPl.

Arsenal would be better off trying to make a similar find as with Elneny who looks like real quality albeit his pretty unknown status before the transfer.

Chamakh

Many thought Bony was a huge risk and a potential one season wonder in the dutch league when swansea signed him. Of course this dude could be the same but arsenal have easily the funds to take some gambles. If it doesn’t work out they can always sell him the next summer with some loss or keep as backup.

Mpls

Bony as an example doesn’t leave me feeling confident.

GrampusAte

Certainly shouldn’t sign any of the goalkeepers on display in this video. It seems to me that, if you’re going to be signing a striker from Holland, he needs to have pretty outrageous stats to indicate some promise. 20 league goals is just OK. But Alfonso Alves was a far better striker by that standard.
