COPA watch: Campbell heading home

Chile got their Copa America campaign back on track with a late winner against Bolivia in Foxborough, Massachusetts.

Arturo Vidal secured a vital 2-1 win from the penalty spot in the 10th minute of stoppage time after Luis Gutierrez was harshly adjudged to have handled.

Vidal, the Bayern Munich midfielder had given the holders, who lost their opening game to Argentina, the lead on 46 minutes before Jhasmani Campos levelled with a stunning free-kick. Alexis Sanchez came close to bagging his first goal of the tournament but was twice denied in the second half.

Chile can seal safe passage to the knockout rounds with a win over Panama on Wednesday.

Elsewhere, Joel Campbell played for Costa Rica as they beat Colombia 3-2 in Group A’s final game dead rubber.

Costa Rica, who followed their 4-0 drubbing at the hands of the USA with a 0-0 against Paraguay, knew they’d be heading home whatever the result but restored pride with a swashbuckling victory against weakened opposition.

Jose Peckerman wrung the changes for Colombia and paid the price with a result that means they qualify as runners-up in the group. David Ospina, who’d kept goal in the victories against USA and Paraguay, was on the bench.

Really hope Alexis gets a good rest this summer! Might need to put him in a straight jacket for a couple of weeks..

Easy as JVC

As long as we take the nesessary action in the transfer market then hopefully we can avoid a repeat of last season’s opening game fiasco, and Alexis will get some well deserved recuperation time. At least Joel Campbell will get plenty of rest. I really do hope we hang onto him, I like him and think that he can still improve given the right atmosphere and encouragement. Just not sure AW feels the same way. Such a shame when you look at someone like Theo who has been given every single opportunity to be great, but just can’t seem to… Read more »

Vardy with whiskey, Szczesny with cigar

Not just Joel Campbell, what is Wenger doing with Chambers? What position Chambers is supposed to develop in? CB, RB or DM? Chambers started really really well as CB then nothing really.

Is it just me, or does this article and the Euro report have some weird discontinuities? “Victories” against USA and Paraguay? “Nicolae Stanciu had levelled from the spot” in a 2-0 victory? ?

Costa Roca played Paraguay before the played the USA FYI.

USA wins the group probably avoids Brazil now!

Houston Gunner

Enjoyed an excellent 3-2 in Houston yesterday. A great goal inside 2 minutes and 1-1 in 6 minutes. Joel came on in the last 10 chiefly to run about an irritate folks, and keep it at 3-2. He ended up with a yellow for kicking the ball out of play the 2nd time. No Ospina. Fun game but I was hoping for more Arsenal 🙂

Campbell is a good player. Before you criticise Wenger, it was Wenger who had faith in him when most said he wasn’t good enough and indeed made fun of old Dick Law of the jungle. Wenger gave Campbell his opportunity last season. But as we can see competition is strong with also Iwobi a strong option (another development most of Wenger’s critics did not see coming) And that’s exactly what we want, competition. I would not rule out the Ox either who has been dangerous for us going forward. The competition on the flanks is what we want to see… Read more »

I believe the Colombian national team manager is called José Pekerman. José Peckerman, a.k.a. José the Dick, is the manager of Manchester United.
