Arsenal draw Southampton in EFL quarter-finals

Arsenal will play Southampton at the Emirates in the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup.

The Gunners have already beaten Claude Puel’s side this season, a tense 2-1 victory courtesy of Santi Cazorla’s injury-time penalty. The two sides last played each other in the League Cup in September 2014; on that occasion, the Saints won 2-1 at the Emirates.

To get to this stage, Arsene Wenger’s side beat Nottingham Forest 4-0 in the third round before Tuesday evening’s 2-0 win over Reading.

The quarter-final tie will be played on either 29 or 30 November between a home game with Bournemouth and a trip to West Ham.

Could be worse, could be better. A mixture of youth and experience for this one perhaps…

Psycho Gooner

I don’t know, maybe we shouldn’t make too many changes for this one! But a home tie is good. Too bad Liverpool and Man Utd won’t get to kill each other again. 🙁

Mexican Gunner

maybe in the next round

SB

Maybe they would not be in the next round!

Lord Bendtner

Wanted to face Hull. But not gonna complain 🙂

badaab

Don’t worry, we’ll get hull in the FA Cup surely.

Nasri's missing chinbone

It will feel really weird if we don’t

Baconator2000

Another run-out for the squad players? Hope to see Jenko, Gibbs, The Jeff, Gabriel, and Holding, at the least. The way the ‘traditional powers’ left in the competition (man u and Liverpool) are looking, I fancy winning this cup..COYG

Russ

Arsenal v newcastle in the final would be nice

Arsenal Pakistan!

How can pep be at peace tonight knowing he’s made maureen happy? HOW? Could have at least taken it to extra time, a few sending offs, injuries and all that. Is that too much to ask?
But on a serious note decent tie. I fancy us at home and we will have one of xhaka coq or Ramsey playing in this tie too in what is already a strong cup side.

santori

Good prospect for our mickey mouse cup run.

None of the media mention how average some of the signings they trumpeted at the other clubs look…like Sane, Stones.

hehehe…we’re playing kids and reserves in this cup, they have to put on Pogba, Costa, Hazard etc etc.

John

Would have preferred hull or Leeds (how did they get through?) and I don’t think we should underestimate Southampton!!!

Good Omens

Certainly not, they are currently on a 7 game unbeaten streak in all competitions, this will be a tough tie, one we are certainly favourites to go and win, but tough all the same.

Eduardo Stark

They or we, that on 7 match unbeaten streak? Saints had just been defeated by Internazionale in Europa last week.

Antispuds returns

Decent draw IMHO. The saints are in Europa League, still. the logic behind giant killing is that they field their strongest side against the weakest side in PL. they also have less competition. leeds can give them a proper headache and if we treat this as a proper premier league game then we should be alright

Previgo

Na, they lost away to inter in the europa cup

Trez

Tough game. They have a good record at the emirates.
We’ll need one of Xhaka and Coquelin for this game.

Beejay

Would be a tricky encounter between them. But I will like Perez to be more deadly next time,if given the chance. I really want him to shine.

Mutiuao

7 games unbeaten run? Maybe Europa league doesn’t count cos Inter defeated Soton last week. They’re not to be underrated though cos they’re very good

Its a tricky draw and a good test for our youngsters. Southampton is playing good football, their new coach apparently knows what he is doing, and the young french guy they bought looks very good. You have to respect their ability to rebuilt after they sell half their team every year.

Make mine a Swiss miss

A home draw is always good i think although they did us at home in 2014. I’d keep mostly the same team, but bring in a bit more experience with Rambo at 10 and Xhaka / Coq to partner Elneny. Not sure that’s being fair to the Jeff and Maitland-Niles but I think it would give us a better chance of winning. I’m curious to see what team AW will play….resist the impulse to just start the kids or not. We could end with a front six of Elneny/Xhaka, Rambo at 10, Ox and Lucas wide and OG at CF,… Read more »

Your proposition is good. But the team that beat reading is decent enough, with a good mix of experience. Jeff and Niles may be young, but they look hungry enough. Playing Jeff may give us the x factor too.

Muhammad AJ

It’s good to hear positive comments from the fans and at this junction, I think winning the league cup should be on AW sight as here is the only cup he is yet to win.
Plus a go through to semis will motivate the whole team for the season.
Ox, Rambo, Coq & Iwobi should be on this one why Giroud should be on standby.
C’mon Gooners!

Every player now realise how important it is to wear the red and white…… No automatic starter anymore…. U av to earn it

Tommygun

Sticking with the kids is a sound move. It encourages Southampton to field a weaker side. If their first team plays it tires them out for PL commitments and if they risked them losing to our kids it does not do a huge amount for morale. We shall see but I think we should continue to use the cup to give our reserves a good run out.

Savage

As good as we can reasonably expect at the quarter finals stage, especially at home.

Once again we’ve had the gift of several big teams being eliminated. As though that changes anything…

santori

Funny to see the likes of Chelsea and City had to throw in some for their first team players to compete for nought. Hopefully there is slight impact on them this weekend. Also contrast the media heralded Stones bought at 47m against our own Rob HOlding whom Arsene spent a whopping just over 2m for. Or Leroy Sane. People like to make it out as if they were the ones responsible for buying the likes of Mustafi or Granit or Perez. In truth, it was Wenger who showed faith in Iwobi, Bellerin and Coquelin, all academy graduates who have successfully… Read more »

Sunderland now a priority. NO easy game, they will be looking to chalk up a win. Good to see Giroud back in thick of it. I thought his mond distribution were on point. He also provides a different attribute to the team. That bullet of a header from an excellent Elneny cross epitomises the sort of direct threat he can bring against teams seated deep. Sometimes we need o simply barge the door down. But he is also a cultured player, the lay off (after pulling the ball wide) to I believe either Iwobi or Ox symptomatic of his intelligence… Read more »
