Sunderland 1-4 Arsenal – player ratings

No At 1-1 it might have felt a bit dodgy, especially after the referee’s penalty antics, but the Arsenal response was superb and the 4-1 win thoroughly deserved.

Here’s how the players rated.

Putney

thought szczesny was pretty invisible all game.

JustAGooner

Hey, where’s the rating for Ainsley maitland niles? Chu yong park is still there right?

Gooner

10/10 for Leicester and Burnley for making the day even better.

La Défense

Mixed feelings about Ramsey being back. His style of play lacks team spirit. He’s also too ponderous on the ball. Nicking a living from a great half season 3 years ago. Should consider offering him to Southampton/West Ham/Everton on a loan deal with a view to making the transfer permanent. He’d be a star player at a mid table club, but not good enough for a top 4 premier league team I’m afraid.

Nairobi's_DB10

I don’t know what to make of Ramsey. he had a briliiant season that one time, but he has not been pulling up any trees ever since. issue is, as soon as he rediscovers his form and sets the world alight, will he stick around or will he pack up when the spaniards come calling? He makes no secret his desire to play there. Even Bellerin had the common sense to deflect when asked about links to barcelona, and he is from there ffs! That is what makes it harder for me to tolerate Ramsey’s lacklustre perfomances.

ClockEndRider

Nicking a living? After coming on as a late sub having just had 10 weeks out. Really? There’s a great career as a football journalist out there for you….

Holyviper

The nerve on this guy eh.

HughJarsphan

I think it’s robbie savage trolling.

Hodor

Just stop with this stupid agenda. We finally have squad depth and people want to get rid of important players. Boogles my mind

Stewart Robson's therapist

Clearly trained at the Neil Ashton School of Football Analysis.

PFo

I don’t agree with the idea of loaning him out, or the ridiculous nicking a living comment, but I have to say there’s some truth in his style of play seeming very “me first” and his being ponderous/sloppy on the ball when he really doesn’t need to be (and this isn’t just because he’s rusty on his return; he’s been like this for ages). But if there’s anything that the recent form of Theo, and now the Ox, should teach us, it’s that we have to be patient with talented players and give them a chance to reach their best… Read more »

A kick in the Debuchy

Er, sarcasm? Hehe?

Sheffield Goon

FFS. Came on, got an assist, did fine. Leave the guy alone.

Arsenal KC

Yes, he was ok, but I don’t think he should have rated as high as Szczesny after that performance.

Tilmann

Assist from Ramsey? C´mon stop being codependent, it was a bad shot.
Great to have him on the bench though. But he´s not a XI team player for Arsenal.

ForeignGooner

Is this a serious post? Or do you have a poster of Michael Owen on your bedroom’s wall?

Ray Parlours ugly twin

Good to see gibbs back at a level we expected 3 years ago. I’m liking the confidence since Mustafi arrived, who would have known that partnering him with Szczesny would be a master stroke.

Ayleym

Ramsey nicking a living???? Who is this guy!?

Red5

Are you a stoke fan in disguise ?

gooner of Oz

Ramsey is the kind of player we need in matches like last weekend Middlesbrough. he may not be the most disciplined midfielder but he always makes things happen in a jammed final third.

Toni

10/10 for SZCZ for playing as a central defender and captaining the team hehe. And 2/10 for Giroud? I would think those are the number of goals he scored.
Blogs, you took one too many before posting the ratings today.

MonsieurSpeedy

2 is a bit harsh for Giroud. Controversial opinion, I know.

TheArseAndAll

He got 2 goals, he gets 2 points. He’s a striker after all

Sheffield Goon

I have a geography O level and everything, but having just looked at the league table it seems Manchester is now south of Watford.

Ebo

At least it gets poor lonely Jose closer to his family down south. Hope he picks out a good curry on the app to keep him company tonight.

sl_andy

Wojciech Szczesny?

Finsbury Pk

I would’ve given Cech a red card for an intentional foul against a player in a goal-scoring position at minute 64. Cech was only given a yellow. If he were given a red, the game might’ve finished 1-1.

Gibbs was excellent today. I hold Monreal in high esteem, but I’d like to see Gibbs on the field more often.

Sheffield Goon

Check the new rules mate.

Parth Sane

Not only do the new rules say he doesn’t get a red card, it was HARDLY an “INTENTIONAL” foul. he got hit with a trailing leg, boo hoo.

Thierry Bergkamp

Besides, Szczesny was covering

Ólafur

Girouuud get’s 2 for 2 goals, guess he needs to score ten.

I agree about Wojciech though!

Kanu's big feet

Didn’t think wojciech would be so important but he’s been unreal this season……….

Ollie

Szczesny at centre half was a bold call, glad that paid off.

JD

10/10 Arsene Wenger substitutions!

Parth

Fantastic result. I really believe the competition for places is bringing out the best in so many players.

When the OX charged back to make a tackle, I thought that was Coquelin! Gibbs overlapping brilliantly as well.

But now, probably the toughest period of the season up until now with Ludogorets away (not easy), Sp*rs, ManUtd away.

The North London derby would be amazing as the league’s 2nd highest scorers vs the best defence. It’s up to us to break their unbeaten record.

Per

I like Ox today. Good for him to get a start in the league and play relatively well.

I think the fans in the stadium should do the Icelandic “volcano” chant and shout “OX…………OX…….OX…OX” etc… That’d be awesome!

Saud

Ox Ox
Ox Ox Ox Ox
Ox Ox
Ox Ox Ox Ox
Ox Ox
Ox Ox Ox… Ox
Everybody!

btw

Except for the two week interlull between manu and spuds, otherwise would be more daunting

Anonymarse

Don’t think we can count man u as a top team any more

Glory hunter

Never really rated Szcz, but I have to admit that I was wrong, he’s been immense for us this season and Im gladly eating humble
Pie. Don’t think he’s our capt tho blogs

MT

I really don’t agree about Gibbs’s rate. He had solid game but only solid. I think his play is to narrow that’s why Iwobi struggled today. Unlike Nacho who is always an option on the wing. But still great squad player but not the first team material.

Getso gunner

Iam happy for Giroud, continue with this form we will be champions May 2017

Brent

Szczesny has been the key this season, no doubt.

Martin Atkinson deserves at least a 9. For most people, blindness would be a handicap, but there he is, running all over the field.

ron

totally ridiculous defending today. Wojciech seemed to be completely invisible at the back today..

Sylent Syd

Very happy to see a solid performance from Gibbs. Speaks well for the depth of the squad.
COYG!

Katy.

Giroud and Ramsy are baaaack. Thank the gods! Also…That Ox assist for the Alexis opener. More of that please, Alex!

Sven-erik

Giroud. 2…
I say One thing to your website: goodbay. I am not Read this shit again!

And_Arsene_Said...

Goodbaay!

I wear no socks

Goodbaay gaays!

Stewart Robson's therapist

Always thought of Elneny as a relatively conservative player – he won’t make a mistake but he won’t do anything especially exciting either. Today he spread his wings and had the confidence to be more ambitious in his passing. Very impressed with him, and wouldn’t be averse to seeing more corner kicks from him either.

Paul

Giroud was wasteful in front of goal. Nowhere near world class!

CantDance

I am now putting a tenner on coquelin to score a 30 yard thunderbolt next week..you’ve tempted fate

Carlos_Santana

This post seemed hurried!
Gibbos>Nacho..

What???!??!

Too easy, try harder. Up-vote just to encourage you 😉

D

What is this strange dimension I have wandered into? A dimension where Arsenal have not just 1, but 2 scoring strikers?

Shank

We’re sure gonna miss you Sven!

Nico

Szczesny??
Giroud 2
Whats up?

Sam

Wow, Szeszney becomes our captain, he’d have liked that

King Tah

ARSENAL!!!

Lisa

I’m a bit puzzled by the Szczesny ranking. Didn’t see him — Kos, however, was as much a rock as ever.

RosaLegend

“Will never score for us” cracked me up hard 😀

Graygooner122

He’s still got time to do a John Jensen!

santori

All players have different attributes. They give us different options to tackle similar functions. I’ve been saying for a while the argument isn’t whether Giroud starts top or Alexis. We have the option to do either. Similarly just because Ox is doing well now doesn’t mean Iwobi is suddenly second choice. They have different skill sets. And there is form which goes in and out. The good thing is the Ox is starting to find consistency. He brings a dynamism to our game with his strong runs and close control coupled. With Giroud, sometimes its good to simply go direct… Read more »

santori

Shout to Ramsey too.

Some silly people on his back today?

Ridiculous.

Got an assist, just came back from injury.

This is the sort of woolly headed thinking that unfortunately permeates some fans and the general punditry.

We will need Ramsey no doubt. He’s a creative player. If (knock on wood it doesn’t happen) Ozil gets a knock, Rambo will be prob best suited attacking the box in that position.

FREDDO

Elneny is just as good as Santi at keeping the team ticking over, but has an extra lung and more range to his passing. I just love watching him make smart pass after smart pass after smart pass.

Frank

I have to disagree, although I think elneny is very good at what he does I think he’s not as forward thinking with his passing as santi Wichita without a Santi/xhaka type in there can hamper our play a bit

Frank Bascombe

Completely different sort of players. Odd comparison truth be told.

FREDDO

They look very different, but they play a similar style in midfield, linking the play and keeping the ball circulating. Elneny is sort of a Xavi Hernandez with athleticism

All The Above

Great performance from lads. And on a very off topic, blogs could gou please photoshop a picture of Girouds beard on Arsene Wenger face and show us all what Arsene Wengee would loom like with a beard. I’m sure we are wondering

rochester

I’d give Atkinson only a half point, as he’s a mouth breather

bonda

can’t believe gibbs is 27. older than ramsey, welbeck, xhaka, mustafi, coquelin. still look at him as a young player

FrankTheTank

Giroud may not be a World Class striker But he is definetely a Super Sub.

Got a busy schedule going forward but Atleast now we have proper depth to cope which is reassuring.

BenGman

I just wish the OX could be more consistent. He can’t keep giving up when he looses the ball. I really hope he becomes the player we all believe he is but needs to put more work in

Vincent Kompanys Forehead

I get what your saying but its an inappropriate time to say this. Past few games theres been an upturn in his decision making and performances so yes his final ball and.decision making can improve, evidence is hes already doing that.

He offers more than just speed (walcott) but also speed, dribbling and trickery. And this isnt aimed at you but it irked me when some people wrote him off, yet Walcott is 27 and is on 140pk pw and is showing ony now somrme real consistencyn

victdot

no rating for maitland?

Cape Town Gooner

Great win. I always thought a rested Giroud is a dangerous Giroud. He was overplayed and tired at time. I really feel for the Ox. He has power, speed and skill but something is missing..I feel like he has so much in his locker that he is not unleashing. One could be very frustrated with him if we dropped points. But great win and maximum points.

tom

Feel like I have to defend Iwobi by suggesting he earned higher marks. He ran his socks off and combined effectively with Gibbs at both ends of the field and several times provided the pivot in between. His touch seemed fluent as ever allowing us to retain in their third. His shooting was a little wayward but the right decision in both cases and seemed positive and perhaps a reaction to Arsene’s comments on end product. Pretty soon he’ll find his shooting boots. After that, the skies the limit. Anyhow, I agree he wasn’t at his very best but think he… Read more »

Kinja Karuri Kenya

Having Gibbs back provides some versatility. Nacho had kind of hit a comfort zone and stopped trying hard enough.

Tim RS

The Coqny combination looked really solid. Good to have a different midfield pairing that works.

Momozemio

I liked the Elnelin pairing as well 🙂

Conchetumadre

Alexis was superb for Arsenal.
That’s how every game should end.
Do not let off the gas pedal until the game is over

Va va voom

We virtually have the same players up front as last season. A little moving players around has looked like we bought a world class striker. Let’s pray Sanchez stays fit while Perez and Welbeck are out or else we’d be left with Giroud and no backup. Damned international break

I AM ARSENAL

Proud of Elneny, Coq and Gibbs.

Gibbs looked finished last season, fantastic attitude to turn his form around and has probably overtaken Nacho on this seasons performance.
Im a massive fan of Iwobi but i think he needs a few games on the bench
Elneny and Coq were quietly superb. Controlled the game. Elneny seems to be coming out of his shell and being more expansive in his play.

Vuvuzela Gunner

Glad to have Giroud back, we needed him last week when we couldn’t play balls through to Theo and Sanchez against Middlesbrough. He quickly reminded us of his worth. Ramsey back in perfect timing. so happy Spuds have remained unbeaten just so we can spoil the party haha.

Mark

I think Giroud’s best role for now will be Super Sub, definitely great option to have in the 2nd half when the defense is tiring to give them a different look. Don’t see how you can move Sanchez out of the striker spot currently with the form he is on and the run we are on. He will get his chance for sure, but for now needs to be patient having an instant impact off of the bench. Love Elneny’s game, very consistent and works his tail off. Always available for the ball and a very good passer. Just hope… Read more »

All The Above

Great game today by the lads. On another topic, I always wonder what Arsene Wenger would look like with a beard. Possibly a Giroud-like beard

I AM ARSENAL

and Ozil barging someone to the floor during the build up for our 4th was beautiful.

Sideshow_bob

And people said we don’t need Giroud anymore. I’m glad that he keeps proving people wrong. Wish he was available for the Middleborough game last week. Anyway happy that’s he’s finally back
