Welbeck ahead of schedule, could make January return

Arsene Wenger says Danny Welbeck is ahead of schedule and could make his comeback earlier than expected.

The England international has been sidelined since April with a damaged meniscus, and it was feared that he could miss the whole of this current campaign. However, while still sounding a note of caution, the Arsenal manager revealed he might be back as soon as January.

Wenger declared himself pleased at the updated prognosis, but was keen to remind everyone that there’s still a lot of work to be done, saying, “Let’s not forget he was already out for a year and we might have to be patient to get him back to a real competitive level.

“It will certainly take two months competition to get back to his best. He will start running again in two weeks.”

So, still some way to go, but more positive news on the injury front is always welcome.

My God, what the hell will we do with all these strikers? Great dilemma for the boss.

Good work Danny. It’ll be great to see you back in the shirt.

There’s going to be some very, very good players not evening making the matchday squad! Hope Arsene can keep them all happy and motivated, going to be bloody difficult. When was the last time we had depth like this? It’s bizarre, thinking back to a few years ago when we were ending up with 16/17 year olds on the bench as we had no more senior players.

JustAGooner

Just curious, was the bobble on ozil’s goals intentional? Thumb up for yes, down for no.

SamosaGooner

Maybe the first time(Chelsea)it was just a shot in the dark, and then the 2nd time (Ludogorets) he thought “fuck it, this is my style now”

Tomek

Second time he’s done that this season right…

It's not tribal with me, but I still love Arsenal

Hitting over the top of the ball? Years ago that was taught as a technique to keep the ball down in front of goal. Intentionally hitting over the ball – to try to keep from skying the ball. Also produces some weird bounces that are hard for the goalie to read.

yagunnahsya

He did it last year away at old trafford too–most likely intentional

JustAGooner

He did it vs munchen too, palmed away by Neuer but referee decided it was over the line.

Onenil

Because it was over the line. The extra assistant by the goal was there to give it.
Mesut Ozil He scores how he wants.

Shashank

He did it last season against Man Utd away

Cornelius P. Snuffington III

I think he’d really fit in perfectly with the way we’re playing right now with Alexis as the centre forward. It’ll take him some time to really get back to his best after so long on the shelf, but I still think he can make a huge, huge difference this season if he does make it back so early.

twinsinfrance

Who needs Icardi in January when Welbz is coming back! Also I am sure Stan will like saving the £££.

Hamburg Gooner

Who needs Icardi anyway?

baller

why on earth do we need Icardi anyway? What are you on about?

Trez

If available for a decent price, I’d take him. 23 and already a beast. HE’LL score loads with our midfield.

yas

I reckon Wenger will only bid for players who are exceptional now. as our spine is pretty solid. Probably aim for a draxler in the summer

GunnerDareMACEDONIA

Only players like grizmann reus would make a deference I don’t want to hear about Icardi, lacazette and benzema we have better players then them.

Senator Clay Davis

Yeah like Lucas

Hopefuly, Welbeck will be used as winger togther with the likes of Perez while Giroud as center forward .Both as substitutes unless they up their game

With the current line up, Welbeck should slot right in to Iwobi’s place. While Iwobi’s been surprisingly good, he’s been decidedly raw as well. Welbeck, on the wings, provide much-needed coverage to the fullbacks and greater pace (just imagine having Theo on the other side, our opponents will need a few Hectors to lock all our wingers down).

And defensive heading ability when protecting a narrow lead.

Jacob

Hmm not so sure, Wenger usually plays a kind of lop sided team where one winger plays as a second striker, trying to get in behind and stretch the defence, the other more of a playmaker linking with the number 10 and picking up the ball in front of the opposition’s defence. Iwobi has been very effective at playing the latter, I think Welbeck would be competing with Theo for the former.

Francis Angrey

We wish him a speedy recovery.

Gooner

How terrible has his luck been? After being sidelined for a year with a knee injury he comes back into the team and looks good, but his other knee gets damaged just a few weeks later. Another long term injury. How must that have felt?

I’ll never forget the look on his face when he went down realising what had happened and what it meant. Can’t wait to see him back in the team, really want him to succeed at Arsenal now.

O of the Arsenal

Feb 4 2017, Bridge, Arsenal are one down and clock is ticking.. we are into final minutes, Sanchez is being subbed, Here comes Welbeck, can he do a Leicester? Long ball from Xhaka, nice touch from Iwobi to free Ozil down right and Ozil lobs into the box..
Welbeck.. Welbeck..!

heihaci

Wele can play as a winger. Sanchez is more of a natural finisher

Jackhamma

Just in time to replace Iwobi when he goes to the African nations. Perfect!

SJ

Nigeria didn’t qualify for the Nations cup,Iwobi much available.

David C

don’t think Nigeria qualified, he stays with us.

PatJ

He might go as a spectator…?

OD

Haha, love that

shokim

Come back soon Danny. Miss you so much. Have a feeling you’ll be good pals with Rob Holding, since both of you are northerners.

BW

I use Danny boy as my striker on FIFA every time.

santori

Welbeck has a good blend of pace and Giroud’s hold up skills, can develop into a fantastic waepon for us. Giroud should not be discounted so easily though. People like to waffle on about pace issues but truthfully, our improvement in goals this season isn’t because Alexis is up top offering unpredictability alone. Also factoring in is Wenger’s panic buy Mustafi who allows both Bellerin and the midfield (Coquelin or Granit and Santi or whoever) to push higher. PLUS importantly, our AM Ozil has decided he can add goals. IF should Giroud play, we still have plenty of pace to… Read more »

Ditto Welbeck in Jan.;)

GoonerfromOz

I prefer February, and do a Leicester maybe? 😉

Chris O.

It’s got to be killing Welbs not to be in this team. Get him healthy first, but when that happens I can’t wait to watch him in action with the rest of the boys.

Javis

Late last season Sanchez, Iwobi and Welbeck combined really well together. Was a huge shame he got another bad injury. He’s never going to score a tonne of goals but he links up brilliantly and adds real power to a forward line. I’d love him to have a full season and score regularly. Proper competition for places now, something we’ve desperately needed

Xxxrob

Wishing him well and his return will be most welcome.
I can barely keep my strikers happy on my FIFA career mode can’t imagine what it is really like for Wenger lol
