Ramsey seeks positives as Gunners grab a point

Aaron Ramsey admits that Arsenal’s performance in the 1-1 draw with Manchester United yesterday was far from their best, but said nicking a point and preserving the long unbeaten run were hugely important for the team.

Olivier Giroud’s late header helped the Gunners snatch a point that looked most unlikely after a terrible second half in particular, but the Welsh international was keen to take the positives from the game.

“It was a tough game for us, especially in the second half,” he said. “Some of the players came back late on Thursday so that’s never easy for them but that’s part of football. We have to deal with that.

“There wasn’t much in the first half and I think both keepers were relatively quiet but then they upped it in the second half and it was difficult.

“It’s important for us to try to get a result, which we managed to do, and it keeps our unbeaten run going. They didn’t make up any points on us so we have to be happy with that.”

Ramsey, like many of the other Arsenal players, had a difficult game on the left hand side. It remains to be seen if Arsene Wenger will give him a run out in the centre.

There are positives to take from yesterday but we need to improve rapidly for PSG.

jj

Ramsey can’t continue to play on the left anymore, it just doesn’t work out. So far Iwobi has looked the most comfortable on the left wing bar the recent mini slump in form, hopefully he starts there against PSG.

UV

What about a partnership of ramsey and xhaka in the middle? Not too sure if it would balance the team. but i think creatively and going forward it could certainly help! and play iwobi or oxlade on the left (if alexis is striker)

DR

Can someone give me a logical explanation on how Ramsey played the 90 yesterday or how he just walks in to the team every time even when his last good game was in 2014?

Trez

Another myth. Ramsey has had several good games since 2014…the difference is he doesn’t score as much. It’s like the only time people acknowledge he plays well is when he scores. That’s why he tries to be all Gung ho and what not. He also has developed an ego and wants to be the big fish of the team which simply isn’t happening with Ozil, Alexis and Santi around.

David Kushner

ramsey should not have gotten the start yesterday. Arsenal should have lined up with imwobi in the other wide role. Ramsey drifts to the middle to often and clogs passing lanes and takes away any width. He wants to be a number 10, a box to box midfielder but that he simply is not. He lacks defensive discipline as well. It would have been interesting to see Ramsey play alongside xhaka in a deeper holding role at least their would be cover for Ramsey’s inevitable bombing forward at every opportunity. I really wish wenger had not sold Joel Campbell I… Read more »

I had all the time in my life to have your curiosity answered but they consisted of no logic whatsoever. Try Wenger.

La Défense

Utterly baffling stuff. Ramsey needs to relearn humility, and faithfully practice ALL that is required of a central midfielder, i.e., playing for the team, staying in position, covering for others, covering space, helping out defensively, etc.. Everyone says he’s a great midfielder, but he plays as if he’s in a free role not matter what position he’s been asked to play – selfish, glory seeking behavior utterly forgetting team ethics. He needs to stop desperately trying to score goals. His purple patch came NOT when he was in a free role, but when he played in a disciplined, restrained way… Read more »

David Kushner

Very very well put brilliantly sums up Ramsey.

Hank Wankford

Crikey you really do get yourself worked up when it comes to Ramsey don’t you. Actually quite odd.

La Défense

Yes I do. I’m a hater, and unashamedly so. 🙂

Raises my blood pressure no end seeing Ramsey in the starting line up. My buddies have a running joke that Ramsey’s cast a spell on Wenger – no matter how cohesive the team may be performing when Ramsey’s out injured, he will always be shoehorned back into the side upon his return, often to the detriment of the team.

Manninger

so, so true.

the Ramsey-Flamini axis has got to be the worst pairing in Wenger’s tenure.

Chamakh

He played well for the first part of last season too. It was after his injury when he was paired with Flamini things started to go bad. He has been effective for us as RW and box-to-box CM. He hasn’t been good since second half of last season and this far this season but he obviously needs some games to find his best form. I think he also suffered from our extremely defensive setup at OT as he didn’t receive the ball in dangerous positions, the same happened to Ozil. Still hoping to see him paired with Xhaka or Elneny… Read more »

Chamakh

Also I understand that Iwobi is hyped everywhere as he has shown promise. Still he has zero goals to him after quite many appearances so it’s not too crazy by wenger to try Ramsey there as he has shown previously that he can score goals. We aren’t creating too many chances atm and maybe riding our luck a bit

UV

oxlade on the left instead?

Trez

Wenger needs to either play Ramsey as a CM/CAM or simply sell him. You can blame him for not playing well, but he’s not being played in his best position. It’s obvious to everyone he has no interest in playing on the wing. Right now, he’s not an asset to the team. He’s best at a 4-3-3 but that would mean shifting Ozil to the wings. He’s probably the most complete midfielder in the team, but Ozil is the best Number 10 in the world and you have to play him where he feels comfortable. Ramsey himself needs to go… Read more »

Stringer Bell

You mean play him in his best position in the middle like Wenger did last season and he was shite. Terrible decision by Wenger to play him yesterday in front of nacho, no surprise Valencia was man of Match. Ramsey was never gonna get past him and he had license to go forward as no threat whatsoever. Was never as good as people thought and equally never as bad. Could be good for mid table team like Wales would be.

Trez

He got paired alongside Flamini who despite what a certain person on here thinks was trash and average at best. He is a different sort of midfielder to Santi, so I don’t understand what people were expecting. He played his best football when paired alongside a ball playing DM in Arteta. Expecting him to dictate play from the deep like santi was just crazy.

loose_cannon

Exactly and the thing was when he was playing with Flamini he was caught in a dilemma. Sit back while Flamini runs around like a headless chicken, or support the attack. If you viewed Ramsey as a DM you’d have said he played well at the time but we expect him to go forward and play to his strengths. He needs to play in the middle, ideally next to like Xhaka who will sit and dictate play. Saying that I think he could well next to Coqulein if they co-ordinate properly. Either way, not left wing

Zyrth

You do not ditch your midfield partner in a duo midfield partnership. He made flamini looked more terrible than he was, and that speaks volume. He should know flamini is no spring chicken anymore, even then, I for one do not believe Coq would be able to anchor it all alone.

Ramsey needs to shape up and sort himself out. Needs to stop thinking he’s some sort of world class player with abundance in technique.

vnjvnjv

But he played alongside Coquelin or Elneny after February last season and was still poor. Ramsey’s performances away to Man united, man city and Sunderland in particular were hopeless.

Uba Ngenegbo

Will not tire of saying it :Ramsey is bang average and should be no where near our starting lineup
Sell him while he can still command a decent fee.

eduardo

so how could someone you claim is bang average command a decent fee, can you spot the flaw in your logic.

Manninger

FYI the logic is that this is the premier league and he is british.

Matt P

Ramsey is one of a big bunch of mediocre British players that are getting handsomely rewarded for the fact that they just happen to be Brits.
Get rid of the quota. Then good British players can achieve if they are good enough. Rather than achieve handsome rewards based on mediocrity.
Might make some of them a bit hungrier.

Stringer Bell

The most complete midfielder ????

Trez

Name ONE midfielder we have that can defend and attack like Ramsey does?? How many times in the past have we seen him do a decent job at DM when asked to fill in.
Look, if he can put his ago aside, he is a VERY good player. He has shown this time and time again.

Paul

My Gran.

Uba Ngenegbo

You are kidding me right; Rambo is a fraud! Can’t dribble; can’t control the ball, no pace, slows downs our attacks, abject passer of the ball. I can go on.
I tell u, he would not start for Everton, Westham or even Southampton; he is that average.
Whatever he is blackmailing Wenger with will come to light someday

BromleyGooner

You might even be right. But he is a jack of all trades. I would rather have players who are exceptional at one specific that a player who is mediocre at all.

ntah

Accidently clicked thumb down, sorry.

mannyg

Okay, we all know Ramsey didn’t have the best of games, but neither did Ozil, Elneny and every other midfielder in our team. Let’s stop the Ramsey bashing.

However, i do agree that he shouldn’t play on the flanks. Iwobi is much better suited for that position.

Alex

Anyway Ramsey wants to be Santi and Mesut at the same time, but the problem is that he doesn’t have the talent of any of them. So on the right/left, he just breaks the balance and goes where HE wants to go.
I hate to bash one player in particular, but how comes we’re not playing well when he is on the pitch?

Stewart Robson's therapist

He may have been rubbish yesterday, but his wry smile at that whining tosspot Mourinho still warmed my heart.

Jim S

Ramsey is to Arsenal what Michael Bradley is the the US. We all see how good they can be, and get completely frustrated when them just go walk-a-bout during games. Not too mention the bewildering choices when they are passing the ball. The entire team builds up with one touch ball and then ramsey traps, turns and passes back to the defense, wth?

Jake

Campbell provided more end product per minute and worked his tail off on defense. Why he left and Ramsey stayed is a mystery

rohit

This.

GoonerN16

Ramsey is sloppy, he gives the ball away far to often, his spacial awareness is lacking and he slows the team down. He is a liability imo, and I resent the fact that AW shoehorns him into the team at the expense of better players…

Newxieland

He’s being played out of position. Ideally he’s the CAM but little chance of starting there with Ozil fit. Might be an option to replace Ozil if he’s having a crap game but even that’s unlikely since players like Ozil can win you games in an instant. So maybe as a CM in a box to box role. But he likes to bomb forward too much and given the team is already carrying Ozil (to an extend) we can’t really afford another free loader in the midfield. Not saying Ramsey is a free loader but he’s definitely more attack oriented.… Read more »

Spectator

Ramsey at his best is a highly talented and versatile midfielder, close to world class. His versatility is also his downfall, since his best position is already reserved for Mesut Ozil.
But try telling that to his critics, who have found a new scapegoat in the tradition of Eboue, Denilson or Gervinho – blame it all on him when things go wrong, or not according to their plan.
When he is finally hounded out to Madrid or Barca, it will be the very same people who will accuse Wenger of a selling club mentality and lack of ambition.

Uba Ngenegbo

Ramsey to Barca and Madrid? Please pull the other leg.
I will carry him on my back to Spain if either club are that daft to pay a fee for him.

NorthernGooner

I would say Ramsey has zero chance of ever making it to the bench, let alone the starting XI, of either Barca or R Madrid, but then I’ve seen people vote for Brexit and Donald Trump, so what do I know.

Teryima Adi

Hahaha. Love that part on Trump.

Calvito

If Madrid or Barca came in for him we should bite their arm off!! Sadly he’ll be at Arsenal on top wages for the rest of his utterly mediocre career. He brings nothing to the tean. Get rid

Alex

I like Ramsey and understand why he was played – to provide cover for Monreal that Iwobi wouldn’t have provided.

I would rather have seen us go to win, with Iwobi left in and either Xhaka or Ramsey in for Elneny. Probably Xhaka to start actually.

The goooch

What cover did he give to monreal exactly

layksite

Comment:ramsey’s best position is in the middle. wenger knows this and so is everyone here. but the way he has been played out of position since cazorla moved to the middle has turned majority of the fans agaist him. he is not out best on the right wing and he is worse on the left. but wenger hasnt forgot how good he was in 2012/2013 and 2013/2014 seasons that is why he still gives him a role in the team just to keep him. it is clearly not helping ramsey or us. it pains me seeing more inferior player like… Read more »

Manninger

We should let him go and bring in a similar class of player with Cazorla’s attributes. He’s won us an FA Cup, but more importantly became a symbol of a new bravery to succeed at Arsenal – especially when you remember Stoke cunt. There is no point of changing a style of play that has gone through trial and error to become almost lethal. When we don’t have zip in the deep lying role, the whole team suffers. Ramsey needs time on the ball, even more than Xhaka; whose positional rival/buddy is actually Coq. Elneny is the versatile player with… Read more »

Nairobi's_DB10

I’m mad at Wenger for always slotting Ramsey In when he is fit. He walks into the starting eleven, no questions asked. Usually at the expense of someone more deserving. Mad at Ramsey for playing horribly(whether on the wing or in the middle of the pack, his “best” position- which is interesting because it simply is not, might be his prefered position, but it’s certainly not his best.) and still not having the good sense to pipe down when asked about Barca or Real. This is what is going to happen, our perfomances are going to continue declining in quality… Read more »

MerteXhakaM

Reading through the comments and for once I thought I was on le-grove. I’ve never understood player-hating coming from own fans! Is Aaron Ramsey the new Emmanuel Eboue? Poor Rambo.

loose_cannon

He’s the new Walcott or Ox, until he plays well and then all the haters stop talking. One bad game and they’re right back on his back. Note that Ox was excellent yesterday but no one is talking about that, they’d rather slate him when he’s poor. I’m not sure what’s wrong with our fan-base tbh, no chill with some of us

Stringer Bell

One bad game hahahahahaha

Canador

The fucker should keep his fucking opinion to himself. I hope someone tells him that is the weakest link in the team right now.

eduardo

you should take your own advise

lollo

whats happened to player ratings ?

rmpauden

I wudn.t be too against pocketing 25-30 million for him. I know he brings forward runs from midfield a la lampard but he just does not to the basics well enough to justify selection for me…plus he just abandons his position and leaves us horribly exposed even when we are holding a lead

Andrés

Elneny is the really weak link of the team, not Ramsey. On his position, is not good enough to pass the ball to the side. He´s too soft. He have the opportunity to surprise with long passes and cut the opponent game on the midfield. Ramsey, yes , lack of quality sometimes, but he is hungry for scoring and aggressive recovering the ball.

The goooch

For a goal scoring midfielder how many has he got since his one season wonder
