Walcott: we deserved a point

Theo Walcott spoke to Sky after the game, and insisted that Arsenal deserved a point from today’s 1-1 draw with Manchester United.

Here’s what he had to say.

If Arsenal got out of jail with the late equaliser

I would say we would want more, especially from the first half, obviously a point at Old Trafford is good, but we want more.

We want to challenge for the title, in the end we worked hard.

Are you not the Arsenal you have been this season?

I think that’s a bit harsh, we had a bit of a blip but we still managed to get points. Years gone by we probably would have lost this game.

I’m just disappointed in my positioning for the goal, my side of it. Defensively I knew that was my man, so on a personal level that’s disappointing, but the guys did well and in the end we got that point we deserved.

On remaining unbeaten

That’s one of the positives, obviously, but we;ve got a lot of tough games coming up and a strong squad.

Everyone’s getting fit now, who knows. Premier League this year is very difficult, you can’t call any result, and in years gone by we’ve struggled here and we’ve managed to get a result here today.

Always take the positive. Like it!

Mein Bergkampf

Yeah we deserved a point about as much as Nigel Farage deserves a nobel peace prize. I don’t know why people are singling out Ramsey (fresh back from injury and out of position) and Elneny (very few starts this season). There’s no use scapegoating, everything was poor; tactics, performance and spirit. It just stunk. But we blagged a point so let’s move on…

Deano

Can’t imagine Farage with the peace prize.

I felt we deserved a point I don’t recall Cech having to make a hat full of saves mainly because manure are bloody rubbish.

The game was piss poor but where we can see a great deal of improvement can come from us. Can we say the same for them? If we had turned up today with any kind of attacking plan we’d have spanked them.

Dec

Exactly!

ForeignGooner

A team shit on the day away to a team that have been shit for a while, 1-1 seems like a pretty fair result to me. I know you’re saying this based on our weak performance today, but this is a game we would’ve lost a couple of seasons ago.

SwissArse

Alexis was poor …

Goonergeoffers

If you score a goal and the final result is a draw…please explain how this debate about whether we deserve a point makes sense?

Gio

Ha, what’s with the picture?

andres

Apparently someone farded

Rambö

He’s clearly doing his best impression of Mourinho after we equalised.

Ajibola

In my opinion, Elneny was awful today and should have been substituted long before…

The upside dowm

They were all awful. Ozil was woeful, I love the guy but be a man for fucks sake, he ducks out of every aerial challenge there is.
Sanchez spent most of the game deeper than Coquelin.
Ramsey gave the ball away umpteen times.

Is Giroud finally going to get the credit he deserves?

La Défense

Ramsey was worse. Sorry not sorry

Bismarck

Ramsey did well in defense guys, it was the tactic of the coach that made him not have an effect in attack. Ramsey doesn’t play on that position, he was meant to give defensive cover to Monreal.

assistantref

No, we really didn’t deserve a point, Theo. I appreciate the effort to try to say something positive, though.

And we got to see Mourinho’s sad face, so all in all not a bad day considering how much worse it easily could have been.

Panther

Arsenal continuously outplay teams and end up dropping points, no one says the teams Arsenal outplay but end up getting a point or points, are lucky so fuck all the haters criticising Arsenal today.

Ozil's best friend

I honestly cant believe people are disappointed. Am so happy about the game

AusGunner

it’s a mixed bag, the performance was really quite disconcertingly bad. but that being the case, to nick a point when i thought defeat was a sure thing as soon as they scored was quite satisfying indeed. in context, 2 points from the last 2 games is less handy than 4 but considering they were early kick-offs against tough opponents after CL and interlull action, and keeps our unbeaten run after that weird first game of the season going, it’s not bad. but yes, disconcertingly disjointed performance

Maasai Gooner

That’s the spirit Theo. Let’s focus on the positives. We can’t just sit and lament all day.

David C

Thanks! I’m surprised at the tone on here today. I thought we’d be delighted in stealing a point! We need to make sure to win the home game now to take 4 out of 6 points from one of our rivals. Santi and Bellerin were much bigger misses than Ibra/Shaw.

COYG!

Nairobi's_DB10

we got a point, but what a dull point it was! I really really miss Cazorla. I can’t stand this new “pass them sideways to death” technique that we are currently employing.

I rony

No. No we didn’t.

Hi-brid

We didn’t, but do you think I give a shit?

joe shmo

Midfield did not work today. We seriously lacked creativity. Elneny doesn’t do much wrong, but he’s simply too safe, may it be his passing or lack of forward drive when dribbling (which he hardly does). Monreal got pinned back by Valencia and Jenks didn’t dare venture forward much. So the fbs were ineffectual going forward. Ramsey just no longer fits into this team in my opinion. There’s the odd good long ball, flick-on or tackle, but he consistently slows things down. He also nearly cost us a goal today with an extremely sloppy pass when playing out from the back.… Read more »

Arsenalfanman

We didn’t deserve a point, but United didn’t deserve 3 either. What a shite game.

Petit's Handbag

We got that point we deserved…..hahahahahahahahahaha.Good man Theo

Cheeky arse

Sorry, but we are allowed to criticize arsenal and also praise them as well. As fans, we all have our own opinions. Arsenal certainly did not out play united today

Lord Bendtner

Did we deserve the point?
Of course we did!
If you don’t think that getting a goal late in the game from a beautiful cross and an even better header isn’t worthy of deserving a point, then you need to reassess your reasoning.
Having a bruised up Alexis and a tired Koscielney, our two top players, and that two in the two most vital positions, and you think after that a point isnt deserved?
We deserved the point cuz screw international breaks!

SwissArse

Lol.

DB10s

On hindsight. Maybe Alexis should have played on the left. WIth Iwobi not playing, noone could bring the ball up beyond their midfield press. Ramsey and Theo aren’t capable of that.

Jay2808

Looked like he was on the Charlie. Had it all down his arm too. Smash and grab draw. Take it

Goon

Ramsey was better in central positions. Missed the fluidity and diversity in our play in the middle. Coq and Elneny do not offer the most creativity. I think line up was wrong.

George

Everything you’ve said is correct and not outlandish at all.

I’m guessing the thumb-downs are because some tried to give you 2 thumbs-up.

Tom Bush

How come Ramsey lasted the whole game and Elneny stayed on for that long? Sometimes we need to make our subs earlier. Will still take the point!

Altaz

Not trying to be a dick but clearly all these interviews are heavily pre media trained. Yes we were shit we got lucky with a point but anymore of this “I’m disappointed” “we should be challenging” blah blah is irrelevant. We know it, they know it. Forget all this media trained responses

true gunner

Arsenal also better than walcott on the right-wing, he’s offer nothing in attack.

Vincent Kompany's Forehead

We were lucky to get a point for real. Too much tiki-taka and ‘cute’ passes. I love Ozil and Sanchez but I think our creative players need to learn when to be cute and when to go for a more authoritative pass. All our key players, Sanchez, Walcott and Ozil were anonymous and why Sanchez played the full 90 is beyond me. I think Coq and Elneny was a negative decision, although I like Elneny I think Xhaka would’ve been better off playing from the start. It pains me to say it, and obviously they were playing from home, but… Read more »

Lord Bendtner

U know since the start of this season I’ve been wondering weather this is a good time to slowly start integrating Gibbs into more of our matches. Monreal is amazing yes, but sometimes I do get the feeling that age is slowly creeping in. Anyways, my opinion for the future. It’s controversial I know.

AusGunner

“It pains me to say it”

push thru that pain barrier my child *gently kisses yr sweet forehead*

Cape Town Gooner

RM must come for Ramsey please.

Chamakh

Ramsey and Elneny singled out as the worst performers. Well none of them had a good match but neither have they played too many matches this season. As bad were Ozil, Sanchez, Walcott. Can’t understand why Alexis is playing deep-lying playmaker for us the last 10 minutes not finding a player with a single pass. He is a great player but at times he starts to force things by himself and just ruins the teamplay, would rather have seen him in the box with Giroud trying to score goals. Ozil was pretty invisible the whole match. Walcott tried some combinations… Read more »

SwissArse

Chech hat a good game …

Özil at times is annoyingly invisible … Where do the big bucks go if not into big game players?

onenil

Theo’s face says it all. We stank the place out.

George

Theo’s face says how everyone felt about his performance.

Stay out wide FFS. He’s really not very smart, is he. I hate his ‘interviews’ too – cringeworthy stuff.

santori

We are still only 2 points off media anointed Liverpool and City. Should Chelsea fail to capitalise, we will also be within breathing distance of them and its a long road ahead. PLus its NOvember so in that sense despite a disappointing 4 points shed out of 6 possible, some positives. Only negative today (besides us not nicking the win had we put on GIroud and Ox earlier) is that West Ham could not beat bloody Spurs. The other thing is all these people going on about GIroud as plan B. He is a different tool in the Arsenal not… Read more »

SwissArse

Agree Santori.

meletios

yeh, may some Camphor under his nose before every match….

Paul

I remember a couple years ago we lost to Man U at home 1-2 and they had 1 shot on goal (gibb’s own goal). I’m not sure about you but I’m totally fine with the result today and yes we deserved it (based on Karma if not performance!)

SwissArse

Based on karma, love that.

Give me more karma anytime, I don’t care.

PatJ

If we had played like the other team (which name I don’t remember at the moment) did, and that other team (which name I have never remembered) had played like we did today, we would not think that said other team (which name I will never remember) had deserved a point.

SW16 gunner

Delighted with a point. Said before the game i would take a point and a late bullet header to wipe the smirk off mos face makes it even sweeter! Obviously not our best performance, but they set out to defend at home. With Cazorla out, our only other player of a similair mould who can take the ball forward and past players is on loan at Bournemouth. Would quite like him back

Alexstratz

“Years gone by we probably would have lost this game.” We’ve been saying that for 2 seasons now. Time to make it “years gone by we probably would have drawn this game.”

SwissArse

Years gone by we would not have won this one … (one for future referencers, Alex)

Wealthycrown

Wenger had no balls against a mourinho team yesterday. It was obvious man it’d cldnt score and our mid field couldn’t get a grip of the match and then my coach made an obvious substitution after we fell a goal behind. The goal we scored was a testament that man utd’s defence was crap and would have crumbled under pressure. Anyway I would take that lonely point over an outright loss of three

No. 8

Forgive my ignorance because I didn’t get to watch the game. But loads of comments about side ways passing; Sanchez having to drop deep for the ball; Ramsey and Walcott not staying wide etc…. obviously we are still missing Santi. Would it be fair to say Jack would be filling the void right. Ability to pass the ball forward, to run passed players, to collect the ball in tight spaces etc…

SwissArse

Jack! Come back!
