Lucas Perez Chelsea absence down to ankle problem

According to Football London, Lucas Perez missed Arsenal’s 3-1 defeat to Chelsea with an ankle injury.

The Spaniard picked apparently picked up what’s described as a ‘minor’ problem during training and wasn’t risked.

His absence had fans wondering if he was ‘the new Joel Campbell’, easily jettisoned by the manager when he has plenty to choose from, but the presence of youngster Jeff Reine-Adelaide in the squad in his place makes more sense if he did have a knock.

The former Deportivo la Coruña man has already missed a chunk of the campaign with an ankle problem, and it remains to be seen whether not he’ll be fit for the game against Hull this weekend.

Arsenal will be assessing the fitness of Mohamed Elneny who played in the AFCON final on Sunday night, but despite scoring the opening goal saw his Egypt side lose 2-1 to Cameroon.

He went into that game with a calf injury, so let’s hope he was 100% for that one.

For a full dissection of the Chelsea game, the Bellerin assault, Arsene Wenger’s future and more, listen to this week’s Arsecast Extra

Sometimes it seems like we’re the only team that gets injuries. Happens way too often to be coincidental.

Sean

Recover soon, Lucas. You’re an asset to the squad there’s no denying.

It’ll be interesting to see what happens if The Ox is available for selection this weekend after his Twitter gaffe.

Mpls

Much ado about nothing.

It is so easy to trip a button just scrolling, and that’s basically what he said. Didn’t even know he did it and didn’t mean to.

And as much as about anyone else in the squad he’s got no reason to complain. The manager’s hardly freezing him out.

richardanus

Ooops, I just hit the down button while scrolling.

spinner

Mpls – Would you say you are firmly in the ‘Wenger to stay’ camp? Genuine question.

Mpls

That’s got nothing to do with my comment above. But I’ll actually answer this one, But after will not get into a long debate about it. Short answer, no. I’m not in that camp, and I’m not in the other either. I’ve never cared for camping much. Long answer isn’t much more binary than the short one, I’m afraid. It’s not long before he’s done either way. If we drop and are clearly losing our competitiveness, it’s obviously worth thinking if sooner might be better than later – if the owner and board match our ambitions and intend to go… Read more »

Ok. Appreciate your response. Thanks.

If Perez is fit he has to start over Iwobi for me. Iwobi has played too many games for such a young player. I think Perez was a big miss on the weekend.

Sheffield Goon

Let’s hope he gets fit quickly. We need a complete re-fit of our team, and he’d be a big part of that for me.

Tyler Briscoe

I’m just done, honestly. 10 years of this crap. I wouldn’t stay in a relationship for 10 years being lied to and let down constantly. I know some of you will think I’m a traitor but there’s more to life than this game and I’ve invested way to much time and emotion into them for such a little return. I’ll follow the Arsenal, but I’m not dedicating an hour and a half plus of my life every week to watching them, I’ll check the results and highlights and that’s probably it at most, save the ‘big’ games like vs Bayern..… Read more »

What if the person you are in relationship with has been sick for ten years ? Would you leave ?

Jesus mate, am I going to be the one to have to say it? Get a grip will you. No team has a right to win titles, and if they did it wouldn’t be us as we don’t have the most money. You have to fight against other motivated opponents and there are no guarantees which is why getting to watch Champions League footy every year is utterly remarkable. We’re all gutted about how this season has turned out, and to be honest I’m feeling as if I’ve had my fill of modern football altogether, but we support the club… Read more »

I respect your opinion but the crux of my argument is that the team doesn’t fight, they don’t give it their all.. We’re not entitled to league trophies you’re right, I didn’t say we were? We’re entitled to the team giving it there all, the board too.. And it goes both ways, Arsenal isn’t entitled to our support if they produce gutless performances with no passion either. What would it take for you to stop supporting? If players refused to play and the club doubled ticket prices? My standards have not been met for far too long, and i’m done… Read more »

Fair enough mate, can’t argue that the lack of fight/application/desire/giving a shit/not gonna lay down and die (or whatever you want to call it) attitude drives us all to despair.

janine

For someone that dont care u dont half go on bye bye??

Hard_Coq

Goodbye @Tyler Briscoe
You will not be missed

Paul

I have no choice but to support Arsenal.
It’s a 50 year addiction for me.
I am from North London, my late father supported them so I did too.
I watch every game or listen on the radio. Yes I am disappointed at times, and sometimes I am overjoyed just watching a brilliant Arsenal goal.
My advice is don’t expect too much and you won’t be too disappointed.
COYG!

Zakgooner

If true, great communication with the fans Arsenal…post game injury news from a third party…speaks volumes

Clock-End Mike

I heard it before the game — I think it was mentioned on the Arsenal TV pre-game studio programme (or I read it somewhere), so I was surprised no one else seemed aware of it. I’m sure the manager would have answered the question if it had been put to him in the after-game press conference. Otherwise, when do you suggest the club could have told the fans?

Zakgooner

There is nothing on the Arsenal website (what should be the primary source of information) so you possibly “reading it somewhere” again suggests a third party outlet. When one of our best players of recent games is out, perhaps something from the club would be reassuring for the fans rather than “reading it somewhere” would you not agree?

Arsesupport

Get well soon lucas, i hope this isn’t a long term thing and that it’s not related to that thug attack
That took him out earlier in the season.

mpls

He also took a kick in the last match he played. Played on though, but I blurted out an ‘oh fuck, and here we are again’ when I saw it. Let’s hope nothing more than a knock or other minor thing.

Gooneron

Perez needs to start games. He has earned it.

Chris E

Yeah .. Walcott out. He is so one dimensional. He is an average finisher and that’s it, no creativity or passing skills.

bob

I miss that wonderful man

Giroud

Lucas perez should be secondary striker for arsenal.he should play behind main striker
By replacing no.10 ozil who is not a prolific goal scorers

Alex

Of course, Özil is our main problem, guys! Sell him, bring Jack back and PL here we come!

Dan

Why can’t we simply switch to the 4-3-1-2 formation it’s suits the players we have, it’s attacking and we can still control the midfield. Our wingers Theo, Danny, sanchez all want to be strikers and Lucas is already a striker, we already have attacking wingbacks, Ramsey , ozil, alex iwobi can all play cam or even Sanchez to switch between it and 433.ox can play the box to box role with xhaka, coq and done by as defensive midfielders

santori

Problm with Ozil is he is Ozil. We can’t expect anything more from him. He is excellent particularly when the team is in gear but when we struggle, he struggles. In this case, we should not be afraid at times to have Iwobi in to inject some fight when the going gets tough and we need some bite. It may not need to be at his expense either as he can shunt wide or drop deeper as a deep lying playmaker allowing the younger player top attack the opponents more aggressively higher up. Lucas I think may be best as… Read more »

Eric Blair

To be honest, this bit;

‘He is excellent particularly when the team is in gear but when we struggle, he struggles.’

Should probably read the other way around, when he struggles, we struggle. I don’t think I can remember a game where he was carrying the team and outperforming all those around him. A great player, but at this point seems the very definition of a luxury player.

CechMate

I feel that Ozil’s game has a certain predictability attached to it and opposition who cover that render him effect less. The usual ones of cutting off his supply lines & hurrying him up work, but also I feel he has certain areas where he puts the ball for big chances and if the opposition stops our strikers/passes from getting there then Ozil doesn’t have an answer. He needs people in certain positions to make an assist. Maybe, blogs can look at the areas of his assists & big chances and we’ll see a pattern there. When Ozil gets the… Read more »

This guy really deserve to start ahead of theo. Perez simply offer more to the team. He not only score but he also assist, shoot from distance, good techniques and is physically stronger than theo. I think that him on the right and welbeck on the left will be great for us. Sanchez up front….u have 3 players in attack who will at least work hard for the team

Alex

Yes, Sanchez works hard at keeping the ball too long or losing it… Time to bench him and then we’ll have a reason to sulk and to ignore the fans!

Heavenly Chapecoense

Theo is a good goal scorer though.

santori

All benefit of hindsight. Wenger starts Alexis up top and he came up with blanks. Most people simply prescribee “should be ” through benefit of hindsight. As I said before, Giroud is a very effective player for us (although I did think Alexis was a good option on the day against Chelsea myself) Reality is Welbeck, Walcott, Lucas, Iwobi all have different attributes. They will wax and wane with effectiveness. The key issue is we can rotate them depending on who may be effective. This is difficult to tell. One game, Walcott may draw blanks and all the geniuses will… Read more »

Chris E

Hmm not sure if we can can call Walcott a good scorer, he gets great looks, he has good speed but there’s no really superb skill when he is finishing, he lets it go and it’s 50 50 at best. No creativity and for sure can not pass or centre the ball in the box with accuracy. For me, he is a last 20 minute sub and can not really coexist with Giroud since Giroud needs someone with accurate centering of the ball. Perez can do it all, he is not a superstar but definitely a starter on this team along… Read more »

Chamakh

He and Elneny should walk into the first eleven.

santori

Nonsense.

No one should walk into the starting eleven.

Elneny is a mediocre player at best, albeit he tries hard. Even so, I may prefer Ox in midfield as he gives us something going forward. The Egyptian is often cited as a pass master but in reality (as with any statistic) he is passing sideways or backwards most of the time.

Next thing you’ll tell me Chamakh should have walked into the starting eleven.

Frank Bascombe

I bet you wear skinny jeans.

richardanus

Chamakh in !!

He would breeze into the starting 11.

Chris E

The problem with Elneny is that AW sucked the life from the guy early on. Elneny does not have the license to shoot and that is a big part of his game. He said it that AW asked him not to shoot the ball often because this is not how Arsenal plays and because his name is not Sanchez/Ozil/Ramsey. I think he can grow to be a starter if AW lets him be the player he is and showcase his talents.

Chamakh

Him starting doesn’t mean that Ox goes to the bench. He has been solid pretty much every time he has played this season with Xhaka. I would play him over Coquelin every day as I dont think Coquelin offers anything to the team in the role he plays atm. Would also like to see a 3-man midfield as that would suit all our midfielders better than the current formation. Xhaka, Elneny and Ox/Ramsey would be nice to see, maybe we wouldn’t get dominated in midfield for once.

Chamakh is a legend btw

Greg

Little convenient. An injury to a player usually announced beforehand

god

not really

santori

Pity.

Hope he gets back in it.

I thought the one player Wenger could retain against Chelsea (and Watford) was Lucas.

He has found the tempo of the team and adds something creatively up top.

Like to see him in the starting line up soon.

Windell Wignal

Elneny is so under rated he would have given us a fight in the middle

mauro

Would love to see them switch to a 4-3-3 and make Ox a mainstay at CM. I’d go with this starting 11 against Hull:

Bellerin – Holding – Koscielny – Monreal
Iwobi – Ox – Elneny
Lucas – Alexis – Ozil

Holding for Mustafi would not be permanent but just a 1-2 game rest for Mustafa’s poor form of late.

For next year, I’d like to see a star forward (Marco Reus?) added to the front 3. Add Wilshere to CM. Sign Ricardo Rodriguez at LB.

Conchetumadre

Bench Alexis. He’s garbage. Worst player in the PL.
Lucas get better soon and bench AS7

spinner

15 goals in the PL this season. If he’s the worst player in the league, he must be extremely lucky!

Charlz

Don’t know why guys here feel it’s sacrilegious for people here to complain and say I’ve had enough of the mediocrity of our club. I didn’t watch the Chelsea game because I could tell we were going to get rolled over, it’s simple Arsenal is our addiction, it flows in our system but sometimes you have to step back from something that breaks your heart every 3-5 days and look at it from a distance. Some of us will always be fans of the Arsenal we’ve just decided for now not to give our lives to it anymore

George

Perez should get plenty of chances to stake a spot before the season ends, fitness willing. A very handy player going forward and hopefully he can be effective tracking back. I’m impressed, but need to say more.

And this is OT, I know, but stills needs to said: Craig Burley, go find the nearest cliff and leap (or flop), ya toothless fat sheight. And don’t ever talk about Arsenal or its fans again.

Matt

How deluded we all are talking about this or that player for the next matches…..guys the season is over and the two Bayern games will only add more pain to it. Our players are good, the problem is that new energy is needed to manage them and challenge in the pl.

I hope Mourinho gets punched in the throat

Wenger needs to re look at his team selection strategy! I believe certain players are better suited for certain games. For example; when we play tough big teams like Chelsea; it is quite obvious that Theo, Iwobi, Ozil are not the best option because they fade when a team gets physical and their work rate when we are not in possession is quite low. In this case play Welbz up front flanked by Sanchez and Lucas and dare I say Ramsey at no. 10. When we play teams that are more open we can use Theo,Ozil and Iwobi. I think… Read more »

Said month’s ago that we should get rid of wenger, people said I was wrong,I also said we should sell ozil he has no fight about him and doesnt turn up in most games I was told I was wrong again, whats wrong with squad they are too easily out fought, apart from perez..Sanchez..wellbeck..xakai..theres no fight in them and that is wenger fault for buying them,

Mizog

My life!!! There’s some clowns on here

Yeah you ,you Muppet defending weger
