Liverpool 3-1 Arsenal – player ratings

Arsenal needed a performance to show there’s life still left in this team, instead they went down 3-1 to Liverpool.

The first half was awful, the second a but better but not a huge amount, and in the end we go back to London with as much as we deserved.

Here’s how the players rated.

I had a question on the arsecast extra a few weeks ago asking if Coquelin was the new Flamini…Think we would’ve been better off with Flamini out there today

DontForget

Coquelin was at his best when he was fresh back from his loan spell and did nothing but shield the back 4 and break up play. Remember when he did little else other than fly around and win back the ball? He’s slowly moved from a defensive minded CDM to box to box cm duties, carrying the ball and finding passes. Either he’s doing this at Wenger’s request and Wenger is trying to squeeze juice from a rock, or he’s doing this and Wenger isn’t telling him to cut it out. Either way, we’re a better team when Coquelin focuses… Read more »

Mr. G

It’s increasingly obvious that when Coquelin broke through it was because he was a novelty player. Our deepest midfielder was suddenly someone who was actually happy to forego the limelight and do the dirty work. That novelty’s long worn off, and now it’s much clearer he’s not quite Arsenal quality. Ironically, the way he plays now, whether under instruction or his own decision, is very similar to Flamini in his second spell at the club – a very average box-to-box style player who’s just scrappier than most of the other midfielders. Flamini was only a regular starter for a few… Read more »

Cdm995

At one point last season when things were going well someone put a post on here saying about how Coq was coming out of his shell, becoming more confident and getting involved more further up the pitch. I remember hoping that wasn’t true, because that’s what happened to Alex Song. At one point he was a very promising DM, then he slowly started transforming into a more attacking player, and because he wasn’t adequately replaced we were exposed defensively. Looks like the same is happening with Coquelin. Same old problems…

Faisal Narrage

It surely cannot be a coincidence. Wenger has always said he doesn’t like dedicated DMs. Flamini broke out as a very defensive minded player. Wenger turned him box-to-box. He became an average and then poor b2b playey. Song is the best example. Broke similarly to Coq and we loved him because he was a straight up no-nonsense DM. Then slowly became more B2B. When people asked why he wasn’t being a DM, Wenger made it clear that’s not what he wanted and how he likes his CMs. And now we’re seeing the exact same thing with Coq; a no-nonsense DM… Read more »

Hi mods,
The site is doing that thing again where my comment gets moderated for no real reason (I am Faisal Narrage).

Stringer Bell

He has only ever looked good alongside santi.

Arsefull

Sure it is Coquelin’s fault for Arsenal’s demise as opposed to the countless partners he has played with who are equally inept. I mean, I had high hopes for Xhaka but he has shown nothing special but for the ability to take fucking selfies with his teammates and his girlfriend and of course, to accumulate red and yellow cards and get kicked out of games and the airport. Coquelin is for certain playing crappy, like every other midfielder and on the team. Yet Xhaka, who you could argue is as much responsible for the demise of the team as any… Read more »

wenger out? I don’t know about that. but his coq was out. it’s not that big

He has become the new Song

Onenil

Can we sell him to Barca for ££££?

Indiegooner

Coquelin played well enough along side Cazorla but has been a liability since latter’s injury. Cazorla might well be our best CM, but it’s up to Coquelin to adapt his game according to the strength/weakness of those are playing along with him.

It’s unravelling

Mustafi: He was all right…

Haha really?
Have you seen him before the 3rd goal? The assistant was much more important to him than Wijnaldum… Just watch him again!
And after that – watch the 3rd goal of Bayern again too! (not to mention their second of course)

Matt P

Agree. He deserves a 4 at best.
The defence was a shambles on that first goal, too.

Matt P

I have to say the much vetted Kos has been pretty average

Kwame Ampadu Down

Of course leaving Alexis out was wrong. It was just stupid, no other word for it…..but of course it’ll be debated to death as people fall over themselves to explain it away….

kaius

If he really did leave Alexis out to keep him fresh for Bayern, that goes down as one of his worst ever decisions. Not as bad as bringing on Flamini against Barca last season, but close.

Cheesed off

Prior to the game Ramsey said “hopefully” the team will put things right at anfield!!! That is the problem, you can hope all you like but you need to actually do something for any chance of the hope becoming a reality!!! The Arsenal players have NO self belief!!!

Tony Hall

I do believe we need a new manager
BUT
the players have to take just as much of the blame for fucking up yet another season !

Charvakan

It’s puzzling to see some of the posts here that call for dumping more than half the team and replacing them with a bunch of players who are either unavailable or aren’t interested. We’ve got a fairly solid core of players and need maybe three to complement them. Unfortunately, we’re going to lose two of our best this summer and that will be a blow. Rather than blame the players for not being able to do things they haven’t been prepared for properly, we could try to imagine how this group (with a couple exceptions), with an addition or two,… Read more »

Wenger out. End of discussion.

lau

a change of Wenger is the answer he always selects players as if he is a new manager even a fan cannot select the players the way he does.. he always defends his stupid decisions….how can you select giroud ahead of Sanchez? and Chamberlain ahead of Walcott,? welbeck ahead of Perez and expect to win? Niles is note composed than both xhaka and conquilin..fans are the one to blame they see Wenger as their everything but he lost his ideas 2008.

Mike H

Lol Walcott is rubbish mate (mind you not helped by tactics etc.). Should be sold. Too busy posing rather than getting the job done.

loose_cannon

A little harsh on Iwobi who improved second half at CM alongside Ox, and generous on Monreal (toasted like a marshmallow) and Xhaka (looked like he was running in quicksand all game). And Coqulein’s Arsenal career is surely drawing to a close at this rate unless he turns it round soon, he’s always been limited technically but now he’s losing his pace and ability to see danger too. Was very surprised/saddened we stuck with the 4-2-3-1 in the absence of Ozil and Wenger’s suggestion that we’d have two up top today. The formation and the dropping off tactics didn’t work… Read more »

Emmanuel

That presupposes that Arsene actually watched Leicester tear Liverpool to shreds. He has a tendency of only concentrating on his team and not caring what the opposition does. It didn’t look like we had a plan for stopping Liverpool at all. If we did any homework, it wasn’t apparent yesterday.

GunnerDareMACEDONIA

I’m feeling worst about alexis dropped to the bench instead of the lost today, as i’m 100% sure that this will made up his mind to leaves us. I would have understated as he is our best player and he played 4-5 games really bad and was worst player and out of form to be dropped, but to drop in this dire times at the club which he is the only players who gives 100% and he is even best player in those humiliating defeats . Man we lost alexis he is gone, you could see it on his face.… Read more »

midgunner

Our midfield suddenly looks so shite at the moment.

God knows what has happened to Coq and as for Xhaka, he just looks miles of the pace.

Have to agree with blogs re Iwobi, he really shouldn’t be playing

No more Ox on the wing for me either, he’s twice the player one the middle…

I dunno whether it’s the players or the boss that’s to blame, but one big fuckup of a season this has turned out to be.

Rob

Public lynching of coquelin would be nice one of these days

Bigzmd

Players are not responding to his voice, his decision making is lacking.

@ rob commenter above public lynching of black man is not something to joke about. In some part of the world it did happen.

pharquhar

That’s a properly stupid comment my friend.

london

Tbh it doesnt really matter how each individual player performs, this team has no tactical awareness whatsoever and then rests with the coaching staff.

Herewegoagain

Absolutely! Strange the number of times I’ve been thumbed down on this site for mentioning that “Wenger does no defensive training” (as per Perry Groves about 10 years ago during stadium tour) “He expects players to know their jobs”. I still hold that he has had just two decent defensive lineups: 1 he inherited (but got off the booze) and the Lauren/Toure/Campbell/Cole one – was that just luck? He’s tried to become Barca by buying small, skilful midfielders but ignores the fact that Messi/Neymar/Suarez are somewhat more likely to make up for defensive weaknesses. Our two lines of 4 lasted… Read more »

The entire team could not win headers. Giroud, who presumably has been watching games from the bench desperate to play, gets a start and basically jogs about pretending to press while Liverpool defenders and midfielders pass the ball around him. Monreal refused to pass the ball to midfielders if they were in the middle of the pitch. We’ve become specialists at choosing the safe easy pass instead of the difficult pass that hurts other teams. It’s Xhaka’s speciality but we didn’t get him the ball. And without his passing he’s just a very, very average midfielder who looks slower than… Read more »

Why would you say it was odd? It was a) completely expected & b) scarily similar to loads of other big-game performances of the last few years. Rubbish, cowardly, timid ? Yes. Odd ? Not at all.

kaius

I agree that it was expected. I mean, we tried an experimental line-up in the first game of the season and got beat. Why would Wenger do it again? Either he hasn’t coached his team properly or they’re not as good as he thinks they are, or both.

Russell

The sad reality is that I expected us to lose. Our recent away record away to the ‘big teams’ is woeful (2 wins from 23). I liked the way we set up today, but that feeling lasted less than 10 minutes and the first goal was horrible to concede. We did nothing in the first half. How can this team be sent out and play like that? They’ve had nearly 2 full weeks to train and prepare for this game. I literally have no idea why Sanchez didn’t start. If that really was a tactical decision, it’s just down right… Read more »

Carlos_Santana

That first half was shocking.. But gotta agree on the ratings.. Sanchez has to start.. I sorta got the idea wenger wanted to hold out and then bring him in to add some extra dimension.. But alas that did not work.. Iwobi should not be starting games like this.. But in the end there was no cohesion.. No one knows what they’re doing and mustafi just gives away stupid fouls constantly

Canador

As far as I am concerned, if Wenger remains in the club next season as the coach, I will cancel my yearly subscription.

Nairobi's_DB10

Something is wrong with this team. It all went south when we lost santi. We have not a single player in our squad that can match his vision and control of our midfield. That we have gone 2 seasons without addressing this is baffling. But then again this is Arsenal and baffling transfer decisions is in our DNA.

pharquhar

What’s the point of watching AFC right now? Such a depressing predictability. Au revoir Arsene. And take Walnut and Coquelin with you.

Tyler Briscoe

I expressed a few weeks ago after the Chelsea game how I’m not watching most games for 90 minutes whilst things are the way they are at the moment, with what I have seen in respect to performances since then; I feel validated in that decision. As football fans we seem to throw away are sensibilities when it comes to this particular passion, driven by emotion, but to what end? All that happens is constantly being let down for the last 10 years. I really hope we fall out of the top 4, I don’t care if Ozil and Sanchez… Read more »

Come on blogs I know you love Granit Xhaka. But he was dreadful today. 5 is a ridicuolous score for his performance today

loose_cannon

Agree, very generous for him. He’s an excellent passer but that’s starting to look like his one exceptional skill and it just isn’t enough. A DM that can’t really tackle, doesn’t cover for fullbacks and looks like he’s moving in slow-motion half the time, especially against the top teams. He’s got potential but we’re not getting it out of him

kaius

I love the idea of Xhaka as a footballer. But the reality is he doesn’t suit this league. Maybe it’s a “first season” thing but he needs to get faster or at least his acceleration needs to improve, and he needs to learn to anticipate danger earlier.

Two of the best signings of the season, Kante and Mane, already had proven Premier League experience. Think we need to take a lesson from that.

loose_cannon

Agree with that, though I’d add the way we play doesn’t help. Xhaka could maybe get away with it if he was playing alongside Kante instead of Coqulein, or if we go 4-3-3 and there’s extra bodies in the midfield. But really, we’re not a pressing team, we don’t hunt the ball and if we’re up against anyone half decent we don’t even try to stop them playing. It’s normally ok for 75% of the league cause they’re not good enough on or off the ball but against the big boys it’s cost us big time, we’ve won once against… Read more »

SNO

I don’t necessarily disagree about the premier league experience being an advantage, but at this stage I think it’s more to do with the team/training/tactics/formation – basically it is something wrong with the club really.
Kante was a standout player last season and if I am not mistaken that was his first season wasn’t it?

Stringer Bell

How dare you bring evidence of reality to this forum. It’s not acceptable. Blogs tell him.

Herewegoagain

Excellent passes? Average at best as most of his successful ones are backwards. I screamed at him at one particular pass today that was not only nowhere near any Arsenal player but found the sole Liverpool player stood 5 yards in front of him!

Wenger said he was going to tell him not to tackle – he’s taken that to heart and still managed a yellow card for arguing (mind you, he was correct to do do that as Can should have been sent off).

Olivije

Imo Wenger’s decision on leaving Sanchez on the bench was right and smart. He needed a little kick. He was very poor lately. We played more direct in the 2nd half. So probably that was just excuse from Arsene. The problem was we started with fear, didn’t go 100% into tackles, lost 50:50 challenges, too many touches, slow movement… It would be the same with Sanchez on if we are honest. We made mistakes at the back. We gave those goals away by themselves. Very poor defensive display but we were not outplayed. In second half we took Coq off. We… Read more »

FREDDO

A major reason why we got over-run in midfield is because Giroud is a luxury player. He’d there to put the ball in the back of the net. Unlike Alexis, he rarely drops into the midfield to help out and, if he does, doesn’t have the skills to do much good. Alexis would have basically given the team another midfielder and someone who could get forward to score. Midfield problem solved.

lau

I think some fans here are not arsenal fans but for other team coz whenever we discuss arsenal games fans of manu n chels like giroud bcoz his scoring ability is below per and not a threat to defenders… your comment is 100%correct for someone who is a winner..Wenger to blame for all this…lacazette is scoring more than 20 league goals giroud ever since he joined ars not more than 17…higuan more than 20 goals..

loose_cannon

We’re overrun in midfield partly because we don’t work hard enough to close down opposition midfielders, and partly because of a very deep backline but also because of a numerical disadvantage. Our wingers stay wide and flat and our no.10 doesn’t drop in at all. The result is we defend as a flat 4-4-2 but with huge gaps between our two banks of four and no pressure on the ball whatsoever. The midfield also have this strange habit of dropping deep but not actually into our box. It’s as if there’s an invisible forcefield stopping Xhaka or Coq from tracking… Read more »

Edzo

We got overrun in midfield because our midfielders are awful.

We can’t even keep possession on a throw in.

Stillmatic

Getting really sick and tired of armchair fans constantly blaming the paying and attending fans for the poor performances of the team. Even worse is that the away fans are the best support, so your reasons of blaming the fans doesn’t hold up.

If you’re such an amazing super fan, you got pay for the world’s most expensive ST and show the rest of them how it’s done.

Lone Ranger

Wenger is being so incredibly selfish in staying on ..and on…and on..

Everytime he’s asked about it he just talks about himself…how he is still up for it…how he loves the club etc.

But what we want to hear is what is good for the club…not him.

I fell out with him finally when I heard of the millions he is on and that he has cost around £90m since we last won the league.

Forget that. 100% time to go mate.

Matt P

It’s sad to say, but he has become a stubborn, selfish, arrogant and deluded older man.
Really sad.

Arsesupport

Wenger got a whole lot wrong tonight, like many other times this season.
For once it would help if he just admitted it and learnt from the mistakes and got of this depressing merry-go-round.
Gonna be a tough crowd for the next game.

Zelig

Squad needs a big overhaul. Time the board put some real money into the squad to compete for titles.

The current squad are simply not good enough to consistently play a fast one-two touch attacking game. First half at home to Chelsea was the last time we played ‘the arsenal way’.

GunnerDareMacedonia

You are right, to many deadwood players that wenger trust and he is let off every time. From my point of you, mustafi will come good especially with new coach and protecton from a class DM which is a must now. So DM ball winner is the most we need coq could only be a sub. Coquelin can’t cut it I’m afraid. We looked better without him and playing Ox centrally. Our goal came from some good work by Ox. It doesn’t get any easier with Bayern on Tuesday.

Billy Enfield

Where was Iwobi and Coq today?
Were they playing at all?

You lot are ignoring the fact that we should have been playing against ten men in the final quarter. Worst decision Ive ever seen. Christ it wasn’t debatable. Yet we ignore that an concentrate on our deficiencies

Cech said after the game that we had worked on tactics to beat lfc, and that the players just did not carry them out very well, That we knew what to expect from them, but we lost too many 50-50 challenges and despite having players in seemingly good positions defensively we handed them two soft goals in the first half, and that we were too timid with our attacks. He said we carried out the tactics well in the second half, won more of the challenges and he did not know why we just did not do it in the… Read more »

I think we’re ignoring it because we’d already lost the game by then. I know we may have managed better against 10 men but the first half performance was just a repeat of Bayern, Chelski, Watford, Bournemouth and that’s what we’re really pi**ed off about.

Paul

Would you mind being “Paul 2” or something please mate.

SJK

Oh my… it’s been a complete decade of this… it’s promising to start with and gets unravelled by spring 🙁

Nordin

i seriously think the team misses Özil play today. Would have made much difference especially at corners and freekicks that we got yesterday. As well as moving the ball further up the field.

Nordin

Well…Özil didnt play and we still lost. Have to still find reason to blame him for his illness and not playing for the defeat (sarcasm).
Thank goodness he didnt play….coz many will be blaming him for the poor performance.

Ross

3 for Iwobi is extremely harsh. Switched off for one of the goals (I think, don’t fancy rewatching them) but: 97% pass accuracy (best on the pitch) 3 tackles won (only Milner won more with 4, Bellerin also won 3) 100% dribble success (okay that’s only 1 of 1 but…) I think the overreaction among Arsenal fans towards Iwobi in the past few months has really missed the fact that the entire team has been garbage and as a team we cannot keep possession against good teams or against bad teams who vaguely know how to press. Individually he isn’t… Read more »

Iwobi doesn’t contribute either offensively or defensively, he’s the worst of both worlds.

He has potential but no way should he be playing as much and against the calibre of opposition that he has been this season.

PFo

Very well said. I think he might benefit from some time out of the team, but not really because he’s been poor. Coquelin on the other hand…

Saint Santi

Not trying to single anyone out but Xhaka for 30+ mill??
I really don’t get exactly what he’s good at.. He’s not exactly a pass maestro or a DM king. Bad investment or AW doesn’t know how to use him well?
And Petr Cech has been uninspired all season long, he probably misses his Chelsea bus

A Different George

Xhaka, I think, has a chance of becoming an important player for years to come (I am not claiming he is there now). He has two weaknesses: comparative lack of pace, which in his position can be compensated with positioning and intelligent reading of the game, some of which he has a;ready shown, though not consistently. His other weakness is his poor discipline, especially a tendency to go to ground in the centre of the pitch. That is easily cured. His assets include tremendous vision and a brilliant passing range, as well as great tenacity (the other side of his… Read more »

FREDDO

If you’re going to play a long-ball game, Giroud is the absolutely last player I would play, because:
1. He is absolutely useless on the counter-attack;
2. He can’t play with his back to goal; and
3. He very rarely knocks the long balls down to players running past him. In fact, he usually gets owned by the centre-back when long-balls are hoofed up the field.
The only thing Giroud is good at is getting on the end of crosses. So the only time to play him is the last twenty minutes against teams sitting deep.
Ridiculous.

seangooner

I can’t tell if this is sarcasm or not because you’ve just listed two out of the three things he’s arguably the best in this team at. One of his strongest attributes is his ability to play with his back to goal. Giroud isn’t a player who can create his own goals but I’d say he’s pretty decent at creating them for others.

FREDDO

Actually, it’s not sarcasm. How many knock-downs from long balls did Giroud get during that game? How many times did he direct the ball to a player running past him? He’s OK when he’s running in on goal (mobility not required). Otherwise, he’s pretty crap when the ball is in the air. Further, his touch with his back to goal just isn’t good. How many times did he trap the ball, hold off his man and give it to a player running past him?

FREDDO

Oh, and how many times a game does Giroud get penalised for man-handling the centre-back while they are contesting a high ball (and then bleating to the referee)? If he was dominating the centre-back, that wouldn’t happen.

FREDDO

Or let me as put it this way. If Giroud was playing for a bottom of the league side, would he get any goals at all? I doubt it. Is he as good and strong and quick as someone like Rondon? Nope. Is he as good as someone like Perez, who managed to get a bag of goals last year in a poor side? Of course not. Giroud has a modest tally of goals because he plays for Arsenal. If he didn’t, he’d have almost none.

FREDDO

I don’t see how Arsene can complain about the midfield getting over-run when he plays Giroud. At least if Sanchez was playing he would have dropped into the midfield to help out and provided an extra man. That’s one of the reasons Arsenal won games in the first half of the season. Giroud? He can’t even hold up the ball with his back to goal.

lau

freddo you are good analyst…coach should not say things like that n he hot answers with him…change his plan we fans are suffering not players bcoz they get paid no matter the crap they play

I don’t mean to abuse Wenger, but if his head was alright he wouldn’t insist on starting the young Alex Iwobi all the time, while stubbornly refusing to give Lucas Perez a chance. You see, at this point in time a club with sporting ambition and not only focused on the commercial side of things would quietly advise Wenger to resign. For fluck sake, blaming Coq for failing to deliver today is like blaming Cech for not scoring. He was obviously tasked to do something that the whole world knows he is poor at. He was too often caught because nobody was available. The tactic employed saw Iwobi, Ox, Xhaka totally disappeared in first half. What a great moment to experiment with leaving Sanchez on the bench. An average team cutting us apart at will.
i couldn’t seriously blame the defence , as there was practically no protection from the midfield.
Coq and Iwobi are on a bad run of form, the manager rewards them with first on team sheet. OX is shunted out to the wing, I mean WTF, the one player who has shown form centrally. Is Arsene gone senile?
Iwobi was awful defensively, I mean awful, backing out of 50/50s, looked like a rabbit in the headlights In any pressure moment.
Really looking forward to Tuesday .

Herewegoagain

Sorry, but can’t blame the defence? At the risk of severe thumbs down…. Kos goes for balls he shouldn’t and doesn’t challenge when they’re in the air in the box. Neither does he lead/control/shout at his colleagues. Mustafi is the worst passer of a ball that we have, dives into tackles way out of position and seems unaware of threats around him.
