Alexis becomes Chile’s leading scorer

Alexis Sanchez became Chile’s all-time leading goal scorer last night when he netted after six minutes of last night’s 1-1 draw with Germany in the Confederations Cup.

The striker, who was playing despite a swollen ankle, beat Manuel Neuer at his near post with a left foot strike having taken advantage of terrible defending by Arsenal teammate Shkodran Mustafi.

The centre-back first gave the ball away on the edge of his box and then attempted to atone for his mistake by ploughing through the back of Arturo Vidal (no bad thing, to be fair) only for the Bayern man to flick the ball back to Alexis who found the net via the woodwork. There was a brief pause while the referee checked the video replay before the goal was awarded.

The strike was Alexis’ 38th for La Roja in 113 appearances as he surpassed the previous record held by the legendary Marcelo Salas. During his 11 year international career he’s also led his country to two Copa America titles…it’s fair to say he’s going to be remembered back home for a very long time.

Chile and Germany both have four points in Group B of the Confederations Cup. Chile take on Australia next while the reigning World Champions face Cameroon.

Alexis left boot

Mixed feelings as an Arsenal defender makes a mistake to give an Arsenal striker a goal. Normally it’s the opposition scoring from out defensive errors.

love and hate

Hope he stays and becomes our top scorer ?

Pedant

Let’s hope he becomes an Arsenal legend and stays.

Rather than a leg-end.

Fourth Place

More of Alexis scores from Mustafi assist next season please

Frankie

Umm if he beat Manuel Neuer he would have to go find him first as he wasn’t on the pitch last night lol….

Andrés

Well, Alexis had beat Neuer, in Champions League at Bayerns Munich home.

Little Mozart

Well done to the big AS7.

Ter Stegen was in goal for the DFB though.

Tim

That was pretty dismal defending by Mustafi

Podb

Mustafi will not displace Holding or Kos or Big Purr or Nacho,or maybe even gabriel or callum. His passing is bang average. Must do better. ALEXIS is pretty good tho and must not go. Kidnap his dogs if necessary.

Nayan

Hey! The keeper wasn’t Neuer, he’s out injured I believe. It was Ter Stegen.

AllGunsABlazin

Twas Marc-Andre, not Manuel, that couldn’t defend their near post.

Ah the legendary Sa-Za force. They made me love Chile way before Alexis

I’m a bit worried about Mustafi. He does seem prone to these kinds of errors. He’s still young yet I guess and he does attempt some aggressive passes that either come off and are brillant or don’t and lead to big chances on our end. I guess you have to accept the risks to get the rewards.

I think he’s looked a solid defender, but its those ambitious through balls, especially in to our strikers.

Time and again the opposition read it easily and intercept. He’s got to cut that out of his game for me – leave it to Xhaka

Lorent koscielny made very similar mistakes when he first came to arsenal and is now considered to be our best defender and world class. The problems with young defenders coming to arsenal is that they need time to get used to the physicality, pace and hectic attacking of premier league teams. Also it’s not like arsenal make a priority of protecting our central defenders. Remember, mustafi played in a back 4 that left him exposed. When we switched to 3 at the back, he was out injured. Give him a couple of years in an arsenal back 3 while he… Read more »

Besides for the mistake, he had a decent game. I like his energy but he needs abit of Bfg decision making power.

That could have been a red card for the really late tackle by Mustafi. That guy needs to stay on his feet or he’ll be parked on the bench for Rob Holding.

Very slick finish by Alexis! Wow.

My wig smells cheesy

A cheeky toe punt I believe

naija gunner

Its funny how everyone assumes we going to be sticking with a back three defensive formation as from now on. Some of us still don’t know the man Wenger.
