Jack Wilshere earns England recall

Jack Wilshere has earned a call up to the England squad for the first time since November 2016 when he was named by Gareth Southgate for the upcoming friendly games against the Netherlands and Italy.

Although he was included around 18 months ago for ago World Cup qualifiers against Scotland and Spain, the 26 year old didn’t make it off the bench, and his last appearance for the Three Lions came in England’s 2-1 defeat to Iceland during Euro 2016 (obligatory link to Steve McClaren hilarity).

Wilshere has made 30 appearances for the Gunners this season, staying free from injury, and Arsene Wenger said this week he expected the midfielder to be called up.

At club level though, his situation remains uncertain. The Arsenal manager confirmed that the offer the club had made remains on the table, but clearly it’s one that is not acceptable to Wilshere as it remains unsigned.

Wenger insisted yesterday he wanted the academy product to commit, saying, “We’ve made a proposal to him, I want him to stay and to be linked with the club in the future, that’s my desire and I hope he will do it.”

With just four months left of his current deal remaining, a departure looks more and more likely unless someone blinks.

However, for Wilshere it’s a step forward and a chance to be involved in this summer’s World Cup in Russia.

Danny Welbeck is also included.

That he’s playing pretty badly by Arsenal standards and still being called up to England, tells you everything you need to know about England’s quality

V is for Vic Akers

Name a better English center mid then..

berlingoon

He’s not and never was a central midfielder for me. He loses the ball way too often to play in that position. For me he’s an attacking midfielder and there I think Chambo, Alli, Lallana and Lingard are all better than him. He’s not very good at defending, he rarely assists and he scores even more rarely. Don’t see what makes him so special to be completely honest. His biggest strenght is running with the ball but due to his lack of tactical understanding it’s also his biggest weaknesss as he constantly makes the wrong decisions and runs into a… Read more »

Sean

The ‘goon’ part sounds about right 😉

berlingoon

Very substantial comment. Congratz!

Which is it? According to your contradictory assessment he can’t do much of anything very well (which clearly I believe to be a load of shite)

berlingoon

So why do you believe this? What can he do better than others? What are his qualities that make him so important for Arsenal or England? Apart from telling everybody that he loves Arsenal so much but refuses to commit because he wants a payrise for being injured 90% of the time during the last 3-4 years.

berlingoon

Exactly, thanks for the conversation.

‘he loses the ball way too often [to be considered a central midfielder] Stats for 2017/18 premier league JW: Tackle success 75% Recoveries 88 Duels won 93 That’s higher than the stats of the other midfielders you mention for England … and in less appearances (17) Ox has 3 goals 5 assists, 30 appearances Lallana zilch goals zilch assists in 10 appearances Lingard has scored more (8) but only assisted 4 and had 9 more games to do it in On top of Jack’s defensive stats and his ability to pick up the ball, move with it, incredible control and… Read more »

Of course the mentioned stats are higher than of those players I’ve mentioned. They all play in offensive midfield while Jack plays central midfield and you have only considered defensive stats. If you look at chances created, goals scored and assisted I’m pretty sure all of them have better stats than him, maybe apart from Lallana, who was injured a lot this season. But if you compare his stats with central midfielders like Henderson or Drinkwater, I’m also sure that they have better numbers in terms of recoveries and duels won. And you haven’t mentioned how many dribbles he has… Read more »

Witch Doctor

Career stats for Jack show 1 goal in every 15 games. Iniesta (not saying he’s that good!!) score every 12 games. Clearly Jack could improve his goal scoring, but that’s not his prime role

Berlingoon

Are you seriously comparing Jack to Iniesta? Oh Lord! Iniesta keeps this Barcelona side ticking for over a decade now. He was influential in how many CL wins? 3? 4? He was player of the tournament when Spain won the World Cup. His biggest quality is his tactical understanding and his intelligence. Not exactly Jacks biggest strengths. That’s really a ridiculous comparison.

Drogheda gunner

You dont know your football?

Heavenly Chapecoense

The guy who left to join Liverpool is named Chambo not Wilshere and has improved lately. I felt you might be confused about who is who between these two players.

Daft Aider

Completely missing my point and looking like a complete tool,
well done Sir Imbecile

Tennessee

That’s exactly his point.

Homer

Playing pretty badly by Arsenal standards. What does that even mean.
(you do know that Dennis Bergkamp & Pires no longer player for Arsenal – and havent in many years, right. Nor do Fabregas, or Rosicky, and Cazorla is injured.)
Honestly ….

Pakgooner

Danny welbeck.. Oh boy

V is for Vic Akers

To be fair he always turns up for England. Him and jack almost single-handedly qualified them for the Euros last time out.

Jaminho

*Jack Wilshere and Danny Welbeck earn England recalls

Birdkamp

JW deserves it. He was quietly excellent vs Milan, and has had his moments in a struggling team.

But man, I’ve never had to google so many players from an England squad. I thought Lewis Cook was a cricketer.

V is for Vic Akers

Yeah I had to search him as well.. tragic

David Hillier\'s luggage

I don’t think Southgate had any choice but to select him for the squad given his comments about playing time and the fact he’s selected Lallana, Henderson, Stones & Rose who have played barely any Premier League minutes this year.

Token gesture, I still doubt he’ll take him to the World Cup.

QMantis

Jack has made some good progress this season and this is the icing on the cake for him. He’s still not quite back to his swashbuckling best but he’s heading in the right direction. I wish him a injury fee run into the world cup and then he gets to play on the biggest stage of all. Not bad for a player plenty were writing off at the start of the season.

Copelandão

Danny boy earning a call up is a sad indictment. He’s hardly been prolific this season!

Mr.p

I was hopeing that Maitland-niles would have had all call up

shokim

He plays for Under-21.

Superfrog

If Welleck is good enough to be in the England squad , then he is good enough not to have to face the negative criticism he attracts from some of the Anti Wenger brigade here

Jordan

Welbeck almost always turns up for England and has put in some important performances for us in the past but how on earth has he earned a call up based on this year’s form?

He has shown little this season to suggest he’s up to it

Teryima Adi

Sign da ting.

Merlin\'s Panini

I still want to see him sign again. I know there are a few people who don’t, but he’s a good option and homegrown.
He’s not been spectacular this season but quietly efficient. Given he’s been fit for longer than the target set I think it wouldn’t hurt to up the contract offer a little bit. Would hate to see him go to another top 6 club, which I think he could given Chelsea thought Ross Barkley was worth signing.
