Welbeck: I stayed focused after miss to score winner

Danny Welbeck says he felt there’d be another chance for him to get a goal after he’d missed a chance to put the Gunners back in front during the 3-2 win over Southampton at the Emirates today.

Having scored in the first half, the England international missed a golden chance to score when he couldn’t connect properly with a Jack Wilshere cutback, but he kept his head up and when Alex Iwobi crossed the back post, Welbeck was there to head home what turned out to be winner.

Speaking afterwards, the match-winner spoke about maintaining his focus as he felt there’d be another chance.

“I thought there’d be another opportunity to get a goal and get the winner,” he said.

“I kept my mind focused on that. Obviously you’re disappointed, but then it’s gone and you can’t do anything about that. You have to move onto the next one.”

And his performance overall, which saw him provide an assist for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s equaliser, as well as his chances of making the World Cup squad, he continued, “I’m happy with the assist. You’re glad to get the goals but once I was playing one-touch in and around the box with those players around me, it’s going to be easy to get some assists.

“I was pleased with that. My mind is set on the next game, doing well in those games. The World Cup will take care of itself. I don’t pick the team!

“Going into the Europa League on Thursday, it’s going to be a difficult tie even though we won the home game.

“It’s going to be a difficult game so our minds are set on that.”

Imagine the scenes when Welbeck scores the winner against Atletico with a comical finish. Instant legendary status guaranteed. This group have an opportunity to deliver what the invincibles couldn’t – A European trophy. COYG.

arsepedant

He’ll swing his foot at the ball, miss it completely but nail Costa’s right nut, which will fly off and knock the ball into the net.

Well, we can dream, can’t we?

Anne Noyd

He is not your typical Arsenal player at all, but that can really be a positive. I thoroughly enjoyed his chaos-causing performance in Milan and the way he won that header on Sunday, crashing through at the far-post while flattening their fullback, was fuckin excellent.

Pedant

Atletico looking the strongest competition in the Europa by far. Let’s hope Danny has turned a corner and can help us beat them.

Battered Arse

Well, we are not in through to play a two-leg tie semi-final yet.

Don’t get worked up so soon.

Pedant

Hope = ‘want something to happen or be the case’.

Doesn’t mean that I am sure it will so not getting worked up at all.

eternalflamini

To be fair, that is actually quite encouraging, if you’re able to put aside a horrible miss and take the next opportunity. Those who have not blocked out Gervinho’s time with us will appreciate this.

Is Welbeck better than Kane, Firmino, Morata? No. Is he better than Llorente, Ings and Giroud? Yes. (Giroud has been awful for Chelsea so far) We can’t compete with Manchester for squad depth, but Welbeck as a back up striker is as good as there is outside of the top two, and I have no problem keeping him next season.

Midgunner

He’s not better than Giroud, but I take your point and agree we should keep him.

TeeCee

If being disappointingly shit for Chelski makes a player inferior to Welbeck, he’s better than Morata too.

Fatgooner

Idiota!

There’s no way that Welbeck is better than Giroud. Welbeck has has a strange Arsenal career: he’s not rubbish but he hasn’t really improved since he first turned up at the club years ago. He’s just mediocre – just like the team, I suppose.

Just seen the highlights on MOTD2. It looks like it was a very entertaining game: both Arsenal fans who turned up must have really enjoyed it.

Drogheda gunner

He’s defo not better than giroud but he is probaly better than morato, why did chelsea get rid of costa absulute muppet but very good on his day.

Danny

All three strikers in confident, goal scoring form. How long has it been since we could say that?

Nketibag

..16 years

Cliff Bastin

Standard tap-ins are for nerds.

Anne Noyd

It’s all about the flap-in

ramgooner

In the future – FIFA “Dat Guy Welbz” award for the most comical goal scored in a calendar year.
Bonus points for those in contention for the award if they had missed tap-ins in the same match.

santori

Still a bit hit and miss though from Danny. There was one instance it was an open goal cross from left and he skied it.

BUT if he can discover his strengths, we can have a better player who can provide power to Aubameyang’s pace and Lacazette’s craft.

Gereoma

Lacca, crafty! What are you smoking.

Gereoma

I am not in the habit of criticizing Welbz because am convinced he is a victim of Wenger’s system. I detest the ox for being an ingrate and agree with Wenger that he is a wide man( klopp would soon find out), but nobody knew at Arsenal that he had some bullets in his boots. Klopp and other younger coaches are more disposed to inventing, tapping to ‘individual talents’, while at Arsenal we hold excessively unto ‘tradition’. Who knew Welbz has got bullet boots as well. He could not have scored if he tried to pass the ball( Wenger ball)against… Read more »
