Wenger confirms Arsenal in talks with Aaron Ramsey over contract extension

Arsene Wenger has confirmed that the club are in talks with Aaron Ramsey over a contract extension, and says he’s confident that the Welsh international will put pen to paper on a new deal.

The 27 year old joined Arsenal in 2008 from Cardiff, rejecting overtures from Manchester United to become a Gunner, and since then has scored two FA Cup final winners as well as a lot of spectacularly good goals.

He has had his injury problems, but his two goal salvo against CSKA Moscow on Thursday night underlined his quality and his importance to our future.

His current deal runs out next summer, and Wenger is hopeful that a new one can be sorted.

“We are communicating,” he said, ahead of Sunday’s Premier League clash with Southampton.

“Yes, I’m confident, he’s not at the end of his contract, he has one and a half years to go. From my side it is clear, but you always have to find an agreement.

“We want him to stay. He’s one of these guys who has been here for a long time. He will be an important player in the future of this club.

“I want the player to be happy to play for the club. Having players who want to play for the club is the way we want to play football and is in the values we feel are important to us.

“With the right amount of money we want to pay, all these things have to come together.”

For more on Ramsey’s future, it’s part of the discussion in yesterday’s Arsecast Extra – check it out below.

He’s always confident, that Wenger.

C.B.

This is what he said about Sanchez and Ozil in December, no ‘confident’ there:

“Negotiations are always going on with everybody. Is it two years to go? One year to go? Three months to go? The door is always open and for the rest, I cannot tell you much more.

“I said that many times [that I want them to stay] and that’s all we can say.

“I don’t want to talk about that [detail] because the best way to deal with these sort of things is to keep it discreet as possible.”

Sandman

Hope you get very many thumbs up for being one of the few outliers albeit a little pedantic with your R&D persona in the Arseblog News section. ?

Michael

He is always ‘confident’. Arsene, I hope Rambo signs though. A 5 year extension would be perfect.

Anonymarse

Ideal even

chopper4001

Give him what he wants and then make him club captain. Some folk don’t seem to like him, but he’s one of the best B2B midfielders in the league; 2 fa cup winning goals already makes him a legend.

afan

he cant give him too much , as wenger has given most of our money to keep ozil

Declan M

If we lose Jack which is looking increasingly likely then we must keep hold of Aaron. Give him pretty much what he wants…build the team around him, Mesut and a new CB/DM.

Matt

And a new manager, that’s the most important thing

Brandon Burton

I am never confident once these things become press conference conversations. The fact we haven’t dealt with this already (the fact it’s even a conversation point) is worrying. If the player wants to stay this process shouldn’t have to be played out in the media. Very rarely do these situations end well for us. With Wilshere likely to leave, we need to go into this window with a real determination to strengthen our midfield. If Ramsey won’t be a part of that, we should act now, not see a repeat of what happaned last summer. I think he’s a good… Read more »

“A window like that would be ideal for us.”
Wenger – “Hold my wine”

Brandon Burton

Kroenke – “hold my profits”

Zyrth

Bould – “Hold my tongue”

Laughing Stock

I’ve thumbed you up for the sentiments but all I will say is, don’t hold your breath

Stephen

Half a team in one window? I’d settle for the defense first. Keeper would be bonus. I’d be surprised if we bought a big midfielder – I think we have plenty of solutions there that Arsene is happy with.

Ross

Give him 5 years, £180k a week and the armband

Rambo1314

Ozil is on 350K. This season Ramsey is equal with him in g/a. I’d offer 250K and captaincy. He’s really important so keeping him is a priority.

afan

why not £350.000 a week

Chi

Ramsey is not captain material…too quiet and nice for me. When Jack leaves and Per retires, I think Xhaka should be made captain (not a fan of Koscielny as captain either) and play in the Cazorla role.

TheRealist

Give him £200k pw, the armband, a rhino, change gunnersaurus to the welsh dragon and let him be in charge of all future transfers.

ramgooner

I do think he’ll sign and take the armband from Per. He has been a different beast since the Milan game and with no WC in the summer he should get a good rest and start the next phase of his career with a bang.

Merlin's Panini

He’ll certainly be bursting to go with no WC…

afan

unless he gets injured , AGAIN

Vonnie

Ramsey is a hot or cold player, when he’s good he’s very good but he can also be pretty awful. He’s also injured every season. I’d like him to sign a new deal, but I don’t think he has the personality to be captain and I don’t think he’s indispensable, although I’d much rather keep him than Wilshere.

afan

how can you make such a fuss over ramsey and not wilshere , they are both good players they both play in midfield , and the both get injured a lot , so how you can say one is better than the other , its just utter nonsense , bias that’s all it is

karl

If Ramsey stays, we need a midfield signing alongside him. None of the current options make the side work.

Lord Bendnter

Quite certain Ramsey will leave. This country be his final major contract. He wants silverware, and frankly, i think he knows quite well that isnt something that will be coming too soon to our club (apart from this Europa League of course). You don’t have to be a genius to see how flawed our playing style and basics have become. Especially with Wenger to stay for another season, I don’t see him taking the risk of staying with us for longer.

Lord Bendnter

*This could be his

Atom

I don’t know that he’s certain to leave, but to your point all this uncertainty around Wenger can’t be great for convincing players to come here. Wenger has shown no public desire to leave regardless of results so if he decides to stay pretty much the entire season next year will be spent on whether or not Wenger will get a new contract or who he will be replaced by.

Atom

Apologies if this shows up twice as think my comment got deleted

I don’t see it as certain that he won’t stay with us but I do think the uncertainty around Wenger’s future certainly isn’t helpful in terms of convincing players to come/ stay. Wegner has given no indication he will willingly step away regardless of results so next year if he does stay will be spent wondering if Wenger will get another extension or who will replace him if results are bad enough that Kroenke decides to move on. Either way it’s not a good situation.

Happy

I’m amazed at some comments regarding the club. Most of these players become mere shadows once they leave Arsenal. The arsenal style make them thrive and outside that they are are just squad players.

Atom

a lot of players have been very successful after they have left the club over the years- Henry, fabregas, van persie, Debuchy is playing so well he could even make the French squad. Etc. part of why I think people have the impression is the past few years we really haven’t let players go except quasi youth players who weren’t good enough (Giroud, Walcott etc need more than 10 games to judge their moves). Ramsey certainly does not fit that category

loose_cannon

Wait hang on a second. RVP won the league when he left us and Fabregas and Nasri both won two prem titles each. All as regular starters for their teams. You can’t say they became “mere shadows” of their former selves just because they left us. In fact with Ox we can see the total opposite effect is happening and he’s thriving away from Arsene and Arsenal. Let’s be honest, if he goes on to start for England at CM at the WC (ahead of Jack no less) then his move will be totally vindicated. Because that would have never… Read more »

All along Ramsey has been a regular at the club and only had one good season where he played to his full potentials and the club has kept faith in him even when he was injured and had lots of seasons with horrible performance. If he thinks he has grown as a player and can’t repay the faith Wenger has shown in him let him move on. You sound as if Ramsey has become a star overnight and is too big for the club.

Tas Gunner

A wonder goal out of the blue and we all ramsey in? haven’t done enough to earn a big deal.maybe a 100k a week if he agrees to stick to the bench, which he will after we sign midfielders this summer.if we are offering jack only 140/150k including bonus,100k for ramsey should be the max .wilshere is the superior technical player.a blind man can see that.

Stephen

Are you in fact said blind man Tas? I want Wilshere to be better. I love his personality, drive and passion for the club. But events conspired and he has been overtaken by other players. He could still play a part but he’s not making a starting XI.

sAMa

Wilshere could be more technical than Ramsey but I bet you Ramsey contributes more to the club than Wilshere. I would like to remind you that Ramsey has two FA Cup final goals to his name. To me, Ramsey is a more complete and better player than Wilshere.

PFo

they both have significant strengths and weaknesses. right now Ramsey is in the better form, but Jack was in very good form around Xmas. I want us to keep them both–for reasonable, not crazy, money–but we also need better quality in midfield, to replace Santi and to give us an actual top quality defensive mid.

and the “2 FA Cup final goals,” comment from people, as if that somehow ends the argument, is getting a bit tedious.

loose_cannon

I think that going purely on technical ability, Wilshere is actually better than Ramsey. And depending on the system, I think Wilshere is probably better suited to a deep lying role than Ramsey as well. But because of his better injury record, his engine, his anticipation and his bloody-mindedness to make things happen, Ramsey has delivered far more for us over all. Wilshere seems to be playing well within himself atm as well, looking nowhere near the player that dominated against Chelsea and Liverpool earlier this season. Not sure quite what’s up with him but it’s a pretty bad time… Read more »

SharpasFc

Whatever is happening or not happening with his contract negotiations has to be having an effect on Jack. I want them both to stay but suspect that Jack will leave and Aaron will leave it till the last minute to decide.

loose_cannon

I suspect the contract negotiations have unsettled Jack as well. My pet theory is that maybe he’s playing like this to make sure he stays injury-free which improves his negotiating position

Teryima Adi

A great player, Ramsey

santori

No problem. We re-signed Ozil when there was all this calamity mongering by usual media that we were going to lose both Alexis and the German. Not a big deal. If Jack doesn’t renew, we have options in market (say Max Meyer). Ramsey’s issue can resolve this summer or get kicked down the road a little. Obviously we would like him to commit sooner but once we fixed endemic issues this summer, the Ramsey ‘problem’ can be put to bed next. Meanwhile, he is looking very much again threatening to kick into a rich vein of form along with Ozil.… Read more »

I’m not saying Arsenal’s some sort of haven right now but the history of important players leaving us and doing better at the next phase of their career isn’t long, even recently when you’d think you could hardly do worse. Come on Aaron, be smart.
