Emery: Welbeck injury affected the players

Alex Iwobi described having to play on after Danny Welbeck’s injury last night as ‘mentally challenging’, and Unai Emery believes the seriousness of it did affect his players although he also said it’s part of football and something they have to deal with.

The Gunners qualified for the knockout rounds with the 0-0 draw, but the performance didn’t hit the heights and the team failed to score for the first time since the 2-0 defeat to Man City on the opening day of the season.

Speaking afterwards, Emery explained, “When one player has an injury like that, every player on the pitch they look at this injury.

“First it’s in your mind, you think for the player. But I think the players were concentrated on the match and we forgot this injury the next minute on the pitch, but when the match finishes, the first thing they did was ask for him.”

As for the injury itself, a full diagnosis has yet to be made, but the Spaniard’s thoughts were with a player who has suffered two very serious injuries in the past which he’s worked so hard to overcome.

“It’s the worst news tonight, this injury,” said the Arsenal boss. “It’s clear that we are with him in these minutes.

“He was working well and he was having a good match. He had some chances too. His injury was with the mentality of the players. They [saw] it was a big injury.

“When you are playing football, when you are playing in competitive matches, it can happen.

“You don’t want it to happen but this is our profession.”

Pedant

We’ve had too many at Arsenal, Ramsey, Diaby for example.

Hope Danny recovers in full.

Eduardo was the worst IMO

Pedant

Very true, was terrible. Each has affected the player’s career a lot.

Eduardos injury affected the club most. I’m convinced, WE would have won the league that year with him.

And T.Rosicky too. One of the many “what if’s”

Time for Arsenal to show their class as a club and sign Danny up.

Upvote if you agree; downvote if you disagree.

I am genuinely interested.

Tough one to answer. Players go into the final year of their contract hoping for a Bosman, or better deal from club, but must also know the risk if they get a bad injury. On the other hand there is the human element to think about. He has been a good player for Arsenal, so perhaps a 1 year extension if he is still recuperating.

dont they buy personal insurance coverage? for loss of income?

I would give Danny a 1 year contract on 50k/ week. It allows him to stay connected to the club (rehab, training etc.) but doesn’t impact the wage bill greatly. Wanted them to extend him anyway. If he comes back next year and he is extended it makes the club look great and he could be sold next January for something. Everyone wins.

Running a football club is a business, not a charity. Sometimes in life, there is no room for sentiment.

And sometimes in life, there is.

Surely Danny has a good few million tucked away. He is a very likeable player, but will not have to worry about finance.

Remember that we all contribute in one way or another to their salaries and modt people’s yearly income is dewarfed by his weekly take.

This is a real blow; Welbz has been a very effective impact player this season and I think was destined to have an influential role in the busy months ahead. Given how tight things are likely to be in the top four race, this sort of injury, could have a decisive impact. Get well soon Danny.

On a lighter note….thumbs up to the arsenal fan that reported sp*rs to the ASA for advertising what they could not do! “The only place to watch champions league match in london”. Technically nobody watched any champions league on their new ground, so ASA tagged the ad misleading. lol

I hope it doesn’t, in a way as I’d prefer him to get more games under his belt but…wonder if this changes the thinking around Reiss-Nelson. Different type of player, but still an ‘impact’ player. That’s the greatest quality Welbeck gives us (aside from seeming to be the nicest guy in football). He’s not the most technically gifted, or consistent, but he comes on and often has an immediate impact. He runs at people too, which is something we lack a bit of, and makes the defence drop off a bit. RN could offer similar qualities. I still hope he… Read more »

I think the loan on Nelson is already negotiated which means to end of season. Which is why I felt it was a bit strange. We are in need of impact players in wide areas (particularly right side) If anything we had this need last season. I mentioned last January I would much rather we moved for Mahrez who would have been cheaper before City came in late in window for him. Instead we lay ourselves to be preyed by United and Raiolla when we turned down slightly less money from City and left United as only bidder for Alexis.… Read more »

Let’s hope it’s not too serious and he gets better soon
