Emery: Salary has no influence on team selection

Unai Emery says that what a player earns, and by extension what his reputation is, has no bearing on the teams he picks.

His statement comes in the wake of Mesut Ozil’s absence from the Carabao Cup game in midweek when many expected the £350,000 a week man to start.

Arseblog News is aware that all has not been well behind the scenes in recent weeks with the player and the new manager clashing, and this has led to his omission from the team for that key game this week at least.

Speaking ahead of tomorrow’s Premier League clash with Burnley, the Arsenal boss insisted that your pay packet had no influence on your involvement as far as he was concerned.

“For me the player’s salary is not important,” he said. “I don’t know the players’ salary because for me they are the same.

‘To every player I give the same conversation and the same decision to play or not.”

It seems like there is communication between the pair, as Emery explained.

““I have spoken with him regularly throughout the season and I am telling him what we need from him,” said Emery.

“He has the commitment to help us with his quality and characteristics when the team needs his moment on the pitch.

“He has scored three goals and he has given us assists, but some matches we need different things tactically or individually.

“It’s not only him. For me every player is the same. If you make a difference between them because one has more salary – for me it has to be the same.

‘The most important thing is to train every day with good behaviour, good commitment and to be OK for the match. Mesut is OK.

“There are 18 players in the squad and one of them is Mesut and I trust in our team and all our players.

“I understand some players give us more news outside but for me they are all the same.”

But salary is also a reflection of quality. If players were the same equal, they would earn the same. Wenger tried the whole equality thing and ended up with bad players earning too much to move on and good players feeling they deserve more.

I know he is trying to say he respects and appreciates everyone in the squad, and that they will be rewarded if they focus and give their all. But some players are just better than others, even at 70%.

Agreed. Darwin couldn’t be correct if we all wound up at the finish line at the same time.

Reality check

Natural selection worked with Wenger not emery..

OohToBe

Hulk is on half a million a week in China, qreflectiin of quality?

Timsh

If everybody puts in the same effort/gives 100% then there are differences in quality. However, what’s a 60-70% Özil worth? Maybe an 80-90% Iwobi or Ramsey? 😀

Hantal

Salary is far more complex than just being quality based. There’s a commercial basis, need of player, contract length etc etc

Look at some of the contracts we’ve janeed our over the years, we couldn’t shift players like Denilson, Bendtner and Jenkinson because of their salaries that were clearly higher than their quality deserved

Bob

By that logic a youth player should never be able to displace an established player because they’re earning less and so of worse quality

Rich

Really hope we can move Ozil on permanently in January, otherwise we’re in serious danger of moving from Arsene in/Out? to Ozil in/out? And by April someone will be no doubt flying a banner over the Emirates.
By the looks of it, a parting of the ways is inevitable, and the best thing for both parties.

poldimacht

You mincing your words now fool?

SB Still

There is no longer Mourinho’s stories to cover the sports page and attention has turned to Emery and Ozil.

Hopefully it’s resolved one way or another before the media blow it into Mourinho vs Pogba proportions.

89 was fine

It’s clear to see Emery is not interested in anything else other than what a player brings to any given game. He’s dropped players and subbed players who have not experienced this at our club as he tries to mould and shape what he has. It’s been refreshing and interesting so far and great to see the players really responding to his methods. Of course there will be players moved on as we grow and become stronger. Pity about the unwelcome injuries but that’s something he will have to get used to. Hopefully he gets the balance right tomorrow and… Read more »

That video! I cried. Nice work, fellas!

I think what Emery meant to say is that he TREATS every player the same, no matter how much he earns. All players are not equal; if they were then they’d all get the same money.

The fact that Ozil is now back in the squad is really strange. If he was fit on Wednesday night then he had to be at least on the bench for the Spuds game. Are you telling me that Nketiah, Willock and Elneny were more suitable for that game than Ozil? That’s bizarre.

One day the truth about this situation will finally be revealed.

MrT

CEO ( Kroenke family ) Called Mr Emery and told him to get his act together, ‘ I have just made him sign 4yrs 350k week contract. YOU PLAY HIM B..CH ?

Pat Rice and Beans

It’s crystal clear that’s something going on behind the scenes. In the same day two posts: one reporting that Unai said Ozil has a place in team and other one trying, implicitly, to minimize the role of Ozil’s importance in the team.

IMHO, I think he just doesn’t fit Unai’s style of work, maybe it will be healthier to both parts part ways. Sometimes one must be pragmatic.

Almost like they’re reading our posts. What’s the tally the Stan?

GraeB

Ozil hasn’t been the same since he played Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody.

Arsenal Wenger

Emery would better suit a mid table team with no real stars. I don’t think he has it in him to coach the big teams like PSG or Arsenal with superstar players, his approach seems black and white, my way or the highway and that won’t cut it when dealing with star players. Emery’s own ego will be his downfall.

Martin

So the fact that he won a treble and double at PSG means he can’t handle superstars. The biggest load of tosh I’ve read in a long time.

MrT

Why did he get axe than Martin ?

Irrational Gunner

Great video. Nice job capturing the essence of our first few months under Santa Emery. Phil Collins could not have sounded better! Ha!

Here’s wishing everyone a Happy/Merry Christmas and up the Arsenal 24/7!! Now let’s start the festival by sending Burnley home with their tails between their legs!

Never Happen

Ozil is a valuable asset for us. Like most
I hope he can fit our plans as he’s the most
creative player we have. Burnley will sit
deep and it’s exactly the sort of game where we need his lock-picking skills.
Play him, win and move on, that’s what
I want this Xmas – get it sorted Santa

LacaNewSigning

That video at the end is the best real deal! Emery Christmas Arseblog! You’re the best.

Con

Good for Emery. The fans stand with you

Edzo

I’m growing so bored of afc starting the wrong players at the beginning of the match and then making two subs at halftime and switching from a back 3 to a back 4 because in the first half we have no midfield.

Pkus, why in the off-season when we were already short defenders did we buy sokratis who is not very good and lich who is old and slow.

Drew

Didn’t buy Liechtensteiner he was a free agent.

Georgeycharles

“So here it is Emery Christmas…” – inspired ! … better than the original and that’s still going after 45 years. Thanks guys and Merry Christmas, keep up the good work.

Chidi

Hahahahaha lovely video blogs…… Big ups ?

Please.

Marven

He wasn’t been given this salary because of his hairstyle or tight buttock, he is a world class talent, and need to be treated so, coaches normally find a formula to fit their most potent weapon in the squad.Emery need to find a system that accommodate Auba, Ozil and Laca all together in one team.
