Unai Emery faced the press after the Gunners dismal 5-1 defeat to Liverpool on Saturday evening.

Here’s what he had to say.

Watching this it’s maybe worth bearing in mind that Emery himself is likely to be more settled and comfortable in England after this first season.

Emery is one of the most useless coach that I’ve ever see in my life how can be fighting with your best player

How he be fighting with Ozil. That he can’t fit into his style of play.Which style? He is cause of Arsenals problem.

We need a massive overhaul of the defence only Bellarin and Sokratis are worthy of being in the squad – Kos, monreal and lictsteiner will be gone come the end of the season, Kola is a winger more than a defender, mustafi is infuriating but at least holding showed promise before getting injured!!! I think this window we need to sign at least three players and two of those should be defenders!!!

Kola is the new Andre Santos

We got badly spanked and the team selection was questionable today. Leaving Laca on the bench and selecting Mustafi absent for 2 weeks ahead of Koscielny who is growing in strength was a mistake. It is too early to throw our toys but what a frustrating game. COYG

Koscielny has been bad, he looks a shadow of himself. We shouldn’t be relying on him now. I wish Laca had started but we desperately need someone who can perform welbecks squad role to start two strikers again

Koscielny was out for seven months and isn’t fully match fit yet. When he does play, he looks like he doesn’t trust his achilles. It’s going to be a good couple of months before we see the old Koscielny back, and until then he needs to be used sparingly.

Richie

Unfortunately we will never see the old Koscielny back. He’s 33, looks skinny, and looks off the pace against average Premier League forwards, the likes of Glenn Murray and Danny Ings.

For sure i didn’t know what the coach was all about. How can u play an open game whn playing such an attacking opponent? Yet u have one of the worst defense in the league? Why do play lechestiner? and leave laca on bench who would help us up front to hold those of vand not to move and cause them problems. According to me he would have played a 4-5-1 formation to Frastrate pool in the middle of the park

It’s a long term project and not all the squad’s needs could be solved in the summer. Lichtsteiner and Socrates were brought in as experienced heads in a young dressing room, not as long term solutions. We’ve also been hamstrung by a series of injuries all in the same position, and two season-ending injuries to very important players.

Emery is 29 games into the project, Klopp is 182 games deep in his.

Record after 29 games:
* Klopp 12-9-8
* Wenger 13-9-7
* Emery 18-6-5

Every other top six team still has to play Liverpool. Most, if not all, of them will drop points to Liverpool. We will get our injured players back eventually. Emery will get better at figuring out how to best use his players as time goes by. And hopefully there will be some enhancement to the squad this window.

At the beginning we looked like come winners but after the injury season,we are falling and this implies that the team is set to win but all requires strong support.if Bellerin and holding had substitutes strong like them like the likes of cahill or mendy as next players.with laca and auba upfront we are good then xhaka, torreira and mki we are good but not as good.we lack powers of pavon and dembele to give strong attacking force and create gap for our strikers to get chances of scoring.

No, it is a 2 years time project: the length of his contract. His goal is the 4 th place. He has repeated a good number of times.

Our back line cost this much: free+free+17m+35m+free.

Poor today. NO EXCUSES.

We were not competitive, lost focus after going ahead and essentially thereafter did not believe we could get something out of it. The penalty killed the game. We lost the plot after and Liverpool didn’t even have to make much effort.

1) For second game running Unai has made poor decisions subbing players and in terms of team selection.

Partially he has had us punching above our weight till now and has been very good with tactical nous.

But last games with options diminished, perhaps (in hind sight of course) he hasn’t made the best choices iMO.

Not that he can be totally held accountable bc he can only play the deck he has been handed.

BUT frankly we could have started with more forward purpose knowing how poor and porous we are at the back.

Would have loved to start Laca next to Auba and put pressure on them high up. They were no without faults at the back.

Also subbing Laca for Auba a mistake considering we were by that stage already far behind and needed goals.

2) Team itself has obvious deficiencies. Chiefly defense.

Unsurprising result somewhat with Lichsteiner starting. Have no idea why some felt Mslintat did good buying him for one season. If it was Dick Law and Wenger, he would have been called a band aid at best.

Also Torreira was poor today (as he was when he came on against BHA last game)

Of course those who like to wank off to him would prefer to stay silent but the Uruguayan was bullied off the ball and overun 3 times in the first half, one leading to calamity and the second goal by Firmino.

Some prefer to highlight and blame Iwobi (since Mustafi didn’t particularly make any high profile mistakes for them to jump on) but in truth, the NIgerian was one of our better players today and the only one who can engage and take on players one on one.

3) January window – If we want to show any ambition even to stay in the fight for fourth (with a resurgent United just behind us), we need to add.

a) A wide player on the right side. We inexplicably let Nelson out on loan, great for him not so good for us. Mhkitaryan as I mentioned last January was not the player we needed but Mslintat decided to spurn City for United on the Alexis deal thereby laying us obvious prey to the dictates of Raiolla.

We frankly could have bought Mahrez then who was desperate to leave Leicester for London. Instead City came in for him late in window and jacked up the price beyond our reach.

b) I’d also be very nervous about midfield. Whilst Torreira (hitherto to last two matches) has been excellent, we have really only 2 and a half options in midfield with Granit and Guendouzi. Elneny is decidedly an AVERAGE player we should sell but no one wants.

We need one more player in the middle of the park we can put on who can cover ground and carry the ball up field at feet. This particularly if we want to keep the engine running.

We cannot expect Torreira and company at present to sustain through a campaign on 3 or 4 fronts.

c) Cback remains unresolved. Sokratis has been OK. BUT we could have had better 29yr old options. In any case rather than show ambition, we opted for another aging asset and added Lichsteiner.

I doubt we will find the right player in this position in January.

Some may prefer to down vote me because I don’t hold the popular opinion but that’s OK.

These are intrinsic issues that have NOT been resolved any better by Mslintat even if popular consensus is to make fun of Dick Law and Wenger.

Until we see our problems for what they truly are instead of blaming usual favorite scape goats (was Flamini now Mustaif or Iwobi or Ozil), we will never recognise the issues in hand for what they really are.

Alas.

Isaac
Isaac

The boys tried but what is appalling is why leave Gandouzi and Laca at the bench not forgetting Mesut. The back is very porous and the centre was not providing balls for the forward. Iwobi played his best yesterday but there was no so much support coming.

What the manager needs to do is change all of defense.. looks uncomposed not only in the game we lost to Liverpool but other matches displayed the same. Emery please sort them out and look for a strong squad back

Klopp has been at Pool since 2016. So he has ahead start to moulding the
team in his image. Of course the hammering was due to the poor defence .
I remembered Mu thrashed the gunners 6-1 in a make shift defence.
Despite all this surely UE can improve the defence by getting more bodies behind. We have to beat Fulham to get back on track. It aint easy as Spurs have found out.
I think tactically the gunners must review passing from the back and obsession with
ball retention.
Pool were more direct and at times bypassing the md.

To me Emery is a good coach but our defense is the poorlest.i dont know the importance of Ozil,Ramsey, elneny, jenknison and koshleny in our team. All those at least should be sold to compensate for the January transfer window for at least Benathia,Vida,Pavon and Dembele at least. That will also empower the project go stronger near the contestants by the end of the season.

Bob T

The defenders were horrendous. Lichtensteiner has to go as well as Mustafi ASAP. I also was very disappointed in Torreira he didn’t do enough to protect the defence and gave the ball away unnecessarily. Major reality check let’s hope we take action in January!

Andrew

Defence abysmal, again. We are so easily rattled, especially against a high-press. We STILL need two very good centre backs but appear reluctant to stump up the cash. Liverpool are so strong right now but it was so disappointing to see the same old frailty exposed again.

Emery needs ofcourse more time and an influx of better players, despite this it worries me a bit that we haven’t improved our defensive structure at all since AW’s departure. Our defenders are not top class, but they’re not a bunch of hapless idiots either.. After watching most of our games my personal view is this: the most obvious is the makeshift defence we’ve put into play the last matches. The second is the nature of our players, most of them is naturally aggressive players ( not Holding) which tend to play their matches as series of individually fought battles and react on situations instead of foresee them. Such players need a much more defined structure than other more level- headed defenders. The third I’ve observed is that our midfielders still don’t close down their opponents with vigour outside own box , thus allowing both deep runs in our box and distance shots. To correct this is not rocket science and thats why Emery worries me a bit

I am very disappointed in the whole arsenal team, they played with fear, they where not sure of themselfs totally disorganized above all the coach had no idea what to do. We were looking for goals and he sub is best chances of scoring goals on the pitch. My thoughts was he was going to sub the full right back then Niles can go back playing two, bring in lacazed to so one of then can create chances for the other but he did the opposite the coach totally killed the game.

David
David

The mid field was a total flop they exposed the defence I don’t know why Torera keeps going forward he played better when he first came to arsenal.

Mugabe

Let Toreira play basically the role for covering up the backline, then Granit can move forward. like the pair of Viera and Gilberto perhaps we shall see results.

Mugabe

Having had a successful run of 22 matches unbeaten,
But in yesterday’s match, I learnt alot of things about the current Arsenal, players lack confindence , they looked to be nervous, not conformtable with the ball, insufficient runs, lack of creativity, and there was no coordination at all except AMN and IWOBI who looked abit brilliant. Liverpool looked good b’se it’s players were confident and up to the task.
Just be confident guys and believe that you are the best team/players you can beat anyone.
Liverpool has no the best players but they believe in themselves that they can beat anyone they come across b’se they know whwt they want. The reality is, it seems Arsenal team doesn’t what it wants yet, team briefing is needed urgently be4 things go out of the hands.
Otherwise I’m scared!
Anyone can runup, but not anyone can win the trophy…..only the determined team/athlete. Leicester in 2015/2016 didn’t have the best team but they were crowned epl champions, Liverpool is beating everyone,………..what’s up? mentality and determination, no excuses for no results.

Whether we like it or not emery is a mid table coach. His choice of signings says it all.

Mike Nkurunziza mulego

All that seen in the past matches, all we need is to correct our backline and perhaps our coach improve on his team selection. Auba should pair with laca up front coz Auba knows to put the ball at the back of the net but he is not that player who will fight for the ball which Laca does well
