Emery: Aubameyang gave Pepe the penalty

Unai Emery says that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was designated penalty taker for today’s game against Aston Villa, but praised the striker’s decision to let Nicolas Pepe take the second half spot kick.

After Matteo Guendouzi was brought down in the box, Aubameyang let the club record signing step up to score his first Arsenal goal, taking a weight off his shoulders and breaking his duck for the Gunners.

Afterwards, the manager said he was happy that the leading goalscorer was thinking of the team rather than his own individual tally.

“It’s Aubameyang who is responsible for penalties,” he said.

“Today for me is a very big decision from Aubameyang to let Pepe shoot to give him confidence and the possibility to score.

“Really, the responsibility is Aubameyang and I was happy when I saw that decision from Aubameyang.

“He is hungry every day to score, to achieve, individual and collective objectives.

“Today that decision shows a really great player.”

The Ivorian’s first goal in red and white is now out of the way, and hopefully he can kick on from here.

In a strange game at the Emirates, Arsenal twice came from behind with ten men to take all three points, beating Villa 3-2, and making John Terry sad.

And a sad John Terry is something we should all enjoy.

Auba for captain! He may not be perfect but he’s someone we can all get behind of till the likes of Holding and Gendouzi become take it on.

lettra

He is Pierrefect.

Duno

Can’t believe I haven’t thought of that pun. Haha! Nice one Lettra

Tony Hall

He always has such a big smile on his face as well !

Don Cazorleone

Dat guy Aubz

weebgooner

Auba as Captain and Laca as Vice Captain? Sounds Good!

Dave M

And Xhaka on the bench…

Gunnerlocutor

Remember when he joined the Gunners there was some concern about his personality and maturity? He has been a consummate pro for us. Today his tracking back was really impressive. And he is a pure scorer!

God is a Gooner

He’s not just a pure scorer!

Alex

Missed two scorable* chances before his goal. About him being a clear scorer. For all the stick our midfielders get for not being inventive, Auba missed 23 big chances last season 7 and 9 more than Salah and Mane who he shared the golden boot with last year. I think this is what is most frustrating about him — aside his inability to do the simple things. It’s that he constantly disappoints with the basic and eventually pops up with the spectacular.

Tim

He doesn’t constantly frustrate with the basics. Jeez some fans seek something to whinge about. He’s a machine and our most lethal player by a mile. Laca is the all round best player at the club but Auba just bails is out time and time again. Love him and appreciate him. We don’t deserve his quality as a team that has played Europa for a bit now. He’s gotta be too 5 worldwide at ST.

Tim

Top 5 worldwide**

dazzlo

Sanchez, is that you?

Shank

Wasn’t at the game and motd is shite, but did AMN have a series of fouls before the first yellow, because that challenge was never yellow, committed in isolation. Unlucky to go off?!? MOTD, did a three minute analysis of the Sokratis non penalty, and while I’m sure that’s very interesting stuff, they didn’t look at the AMN cards at all. Fucking typical. Delighted with the result , but I’m sorry to say that Luiz and Xhaka, are Emery favourites and will continue to play often despite the fact that we have alternatives and will cost us dearly during this… Read more »

lettra

It was harsch he connected with ball clearly and was first in the situation his studs are up a bit but its down to the motion and he barely connects with the Villa player who did a bit of play acting. I can see grounds for a yellow if it’s overly reckless but in this case it was harsch to say the least . It doesn’t help that Moss is 10 meters away from all action on the pitch and mainly focused on catching his breath rather than the play.

Mesut O’Neil

Also doesn’t help that Moss is the worst referee in the premier league (including Mike Dean!!)

glenlaup

He almost never plays the best team.

Goontang

To be fair I don’t understand VAR. At 1-1 Grealish kicked the ball into his own hand in the box. I don’t understand how it’s not a penalty as I thought accidental doesnt make a difference now.

Jack4343

Accidental does matter if an offensive player plays it off their hand and it leads to a goal. Accidental can still be allowed if a defensive player does it. Yeah, it’s a shit change and not many are happy with it.

Dave M

So what is accidental? At what point does accidental become not-accidental? Just introduces grey area and subjectivity. His arm was away from his body and the ball hit it. Penalty. Sokratis was lucky the ball got up and hit his shoulder because that was also inches from being a handball. But enough of this accidental thing, it’s such a stupid law – always has been. I like the new addition that if the player is supporting their body with their arm off the ground and it his their arm it’s ok, because it is clearly defined and nothing they can… Read more »

Obviously I’m going to be biased, but having rewatched the gif a bunch of times, I have to say it’s incredibly harsh for AMN. That’s a genuine 50-50, he goes in, gets there first and the opponent is late. The opponent even gets him with his studs as he’s late, so if anything I’d say a foul from him if anything. If the other lad had control of the ball and AMN makes that challenge then sure, its a foul with potentially excessive force (though going to ground isn’t always excessive force ffs!). However, you can’t really argue the opponent… Read more »

Sachin

It was a yellow the second he went to ground. On a side note AMN has been shoddy AND unhappy recently and if there is no intervention he is the next Iwobi/AOC.

Samu

look at mark nobles challenge in the united game that didnt even receive a booking, it was a straight red. Honestly the ref even stopped play before torreira got fouled inside the box for a pen, trying to rob us but AUB said no

Martin Harris

John Terry the CUNT

truj

But he does not Count anymore

Wilshere's Middle Finger

I absolutely fricking love Aubameyang. He brings such positive energy to this club.

lettra

Absolute class
We need to get back to CL and win things.

Russ

Pure class from Auba, he did the same thing for Laca too. Hope he signs an extension very soon and we get to where we need to be.

Funny being pissed off today even when we won. I think we should be playing better than what we currently are. Come on Emery, sort it out mate.

SB Still

What an outcome to the match considering the circumstances.

However Emery should really improve and atleast get his starting XI right. It’s fine to bring on the substitutes to change the game. However today’s changes seem forced on him rather than a masterstroke!

Our performances are not allowing us to fully enjoy what’s happening with Man U, Spuds and even Chelsea.

Squad wise we are only behind Pool and City and should be laughing at the soon to be erstwhile top 6.

Sachin

This defence is the worst I’ve ever seen Arsenal field. Papa is an ageing beast, the rest don’t have a clue. WTF is Emery doing I will never know.

Mark

Aubameyang has really been a great team player for Arsenal since he’s arrived, works hard, celebrates other’s success, defers to others when they need it more than he does, etc.. he came to us with a reputation for some attitude issues, but he’s been top class since he’s been here.

Upamecano but downalego

He’s one of those players who just constantly makes you smile, he does so much good for our club! A real team-player on and off the pitch, we’ve lacked a striker like that for too long.

A Different George

To be fair, Aubameyang never had a reputation as a difficult player until he effectively refused to play for Dortmund to force them to sell him to us. It was a tactic, not a bad attitude. You know, like Koscielny.

Deep

His reputation did suffer earlier too but that was for no fault of his own. He used to be crticised for his expensive cars, flashy clothes and haircuts and an expensive lifestyle in general. All these things had nothing to do with his on or off field conduct/behaviour but people/pundits criticised him anyway, like jealous little twats. This also reminds me that one of the most mature youngsters at Arsenal, Hector Bellerin, was also being constantly criticised for his hairdo and other such irrelevant stuff. It only changed after his Oxford Union talk after which all the shitsayers just couldn’t… Read more »

IGtheshy

Individual brilliance and determination by the players won us this game, not Unai’s tactics. Emery must go! #Emeryout

Sachin

Too soon to be entitled again, my friend. But yes, Emery needs to realise that the tinkering must stop, fitness needs to improve and do some coaching drills that add value. Can’t have the likes of Villa ad Watford bully us relentlessly. The signings of Matteo and Ceballos and the emergence of Saka and Willock have been the only good things so far under him.

Alex

Ceballos is just here to train for Real next season, mate. And he was awful yesterday.

Man Manny

I am not Emery’s fan and I don’t think he is the man to take Arsenal forward. But that won’t make me give players credit when we win and blame the coach when we lose.

IGtheshy

Isn’t yesterday match against villa is the players determination to win? Guendouzi determination to drive in the penalty box won us the penalty. The player Unai has never look up, Calum Chambers, although making a mistake, has been impressive and score us the equalizer. Auba free kick got to do with Unai tactics? Yesterday we won, but that is the credit for the players who played well but not the manager. Additionally, looking back the 7 games this season that had been played, most of the game is won by individual brilliance and that is nothing to do with our… Read more »

Boywonder

Auba battling to win golden boot And yet for the second time in recent memory he’s given up the chance to take a penalty for the benefit of the team can’t imagine mane, salah or Kane ever doing that hope karma rewards auba with the golden boot outright !

Reality check

He left it for Laca once and they have been inseparable ever since.. this guy knows how to make friends

Paul Mcauliffe

I just feel there still isn’t any leader ready to take on the roll but If i had to pick one it would be rob holding

bob

Straight up Captain material. None of this 5 captains wank, just give Auba the armband and let him lead.

GunnerKiwi

Not sure I follow your point about self pleasure, Auba seems to be working for the pleasure of others ;). Definitely agree he’s leadership material

Surya

Im getting tired of emery first team choice. I dont see any reason to keep playing xhaka? He has willock and toreira who look much promising midfielder than xhaka. And look at chambers. I know hes not van djik, but i think hes better than sokratis or luiz at the moment. Emery has the same stubborness as wenger or mourinho. And thats make them fired. Well at least we know if we let him go ww have ljunberg on the line..

Amusa

Fuck John Terry.

Spursarewank

I second that

OdalGooner

Also, Fuck John Terry.

Glasgow_Gooner

He did something similar for Lacazette last season. They soon became best buds. All good for team morale.

truj

Finaly we learned what a confident penalty taker Pepe is.

assistantref

And to think that when we signed Auba there were people saying he had a bad attitude.

Mike1

People from Dortmund. Probably making the same noises many of us were making about Koscielny.

Spursarewank

And in the same manner you should hand over the captain’s armband to one of our top strikers. Xhaka is an Arsenal player for now but in no way is he captain material for us especially when his performances don’t inspire any confidence whatsoever. #Xhakanotmycaptain

Santori

Good to see him off the mark and Auba again being generous, trying to develop a good working relationship with another strike partner. Some flashes of brilliance from the ivorian but also some poor moments protecting the ball or decision making. Work in progress. Auba also missed a couple of very decent opportunities but that free kick was well worth it. He looked fired up so whatever hair dryer or gel Unai employed in dressing room, it worked as we surpassed them on shots at goal and possession despite a man down. What we need to do with Pepe is… Read more »

YaGunnersYa

This is a well reasoned and nuanced post, I find myself pleasantly surprised at the cogitations of this new Santori 2.0

DBMÖ10

Awwwbameyang ❤️

Cultured determination

He gave laca the penalty last season which would have seen him win the golden boot and he’s still doing it this season. If that’s not a team player i dont know what is

dutchgunner

Can someone explain the Johny Terry reference?

bandi

He is their assistant manager.

Kaleja

We just don’t like him

NaanBread

Assistant coach, Aston Villa

Pakgooner

John Terry is a global cunt

SarcasmB0t

It’s some racist cunt who used to play for shit club.

Arsenalfanman

A proper team player, did the same for Lacazette last season too. He doesn’t worry about his own tally, man just can’t stop scoring at the moment. He was probably quietly confident he’d get himself another chance to score which he did.

Abdullahi

Guenzizou for captain
