Arteta: Everyone starts with a clean slate

Mikel Arteta insists that every Arsenal player will be given a chance under his watch, and that things that they’ve done in the past will have no bearing on his decision making.

The new head coach is preparing his team for Bournemouth on Thursday, and whether you’ve been naughty or nice, you’re going to be given the opportunity to play if you work hard enough.

Arteta has made it clear what he demands from his players, and those that want to get on board will be welcome, while others will find themselves jettisoned if they don’t.

Questioned about Freddie Ljungberg’s comments on Mesut Ozil’s behaviour against Man City, the 37 year old looked to move forward as he starts his work.

“I don’t know, it’s a question for him,” said Arteta.

“I just wanted him to make the decision on the day to pick the best possible lineup to win against Everton.

“My job started straight after the game, so I had to pick the players up first of all mentally and then put them in the work frame that I want.

“With me, they have a clean slate. I told them that. You’re not going to be judged on things you’ve done in the past, whether they are negative or positive.

“This is evolving every day and I’m expecting you to perform and be in the right mindset every single day for me.

“If you do that, you’ll have a chance to play. If you don’t, you won’t.”

The Gunners travel to the Vitality Stadium looking to improve a recent record which has seen us win just once in our last 13 games, so three points would be very welcome.

Good luck, hope he can make an impact. Hopefully he gets the backing of the club in the transfer market in January

Runcorn Gooner

Mustafi back in the running ?

Nofuture

He is good player, former German international, must be good to get into team full of Hummel and onthers, isn’t he? 😉

jw1

Low only played Mustafi in the middle of a 3-back setup, usually against lesser competition, and dropped him from the national team in 2017 at age 26.

Don’t know what Joachim saw– but he saw it earlier than the rest of us.

Cultured determination

He scratched around the rightcplaces looking for answers.

That comment was the Pick of the bunch… No? Well screw you then

Aaron

He saw abundance of talent in Germany to pick from.
Mustafi may not be at the level required to play for the German National team but he certainly is an option for Arsenal (at least on the bench)looking at the quality of our centerbacks.

cagooner

Not for me. He’s a distant last. I’ve seen just too many mistakes from him, and he’s so mentally fragile too.

Badaab

Mustafi played RB a fair few times for the German team as well, though I don’t know if these were competitive fixtures or friendlies.

Right across Sunderland!

It’s actually a good thing that Arteta got to see how bad we’ve become up close and personal last week. He probably had the same opinion as most fans. That it just cannot stand. And that it’s time to shape up or ship out. I think he will get some on board with his plans, but I fear a few of the bigger names won’t be up for it. If so, Arteta will point them in the direction of the exit door with a big smile on his face. We, as fans, have to back him in sorting out the… Read more »

I would be pointing out, as future reference to the players, that certain behaviours are unacceptable moving forward (like swearing at fans or being petulant) but that a line has been drawn under previous misdemeanors

Victor Lim

Clean slate? Unless there’s repentance. The pass behaviours shouldn’t be overlooked.

Lack of Perspective

It is an effective management strategy to try and reboot the attitude of certain employees that have become turbulent under previous management. Very quickly you would be able to see if the the source of the problem was from the employee or the employer.

An easy win.

..if you don’t, you won’t. U can sense s’thing!?

What will Özil do with a clean sheet?

Liking the cut of Mikel’s jib so far. Excited to see what he can actuallly do with this strange squad. The January transfer window is looking to be quite strange for us as well. Strange times. Come on Arteta, come on Arsenal!

baz00r

I’m liking the cut of his hair.

Uses a Jell-O mold and Flobee!

Dastardlydick

He’s absolutely right with that message. We might get some underperforming individuals improving. And if they don’t they won’t play. Emery sucked the life out of this team and we need inspiration, organisation and a common sense pragmatic approach.

Mpls

I agree. It’s an astute double edged statement, really. One purpose is to repair the environment by pushing out the recent massive negativity, the other is to let everyone know that none are given a free ride.

baz00r

I think that’s a fair call. It won’t take long for the players that are shite to show Arteta first hand they are shite, so fine with me.

If he plays #20– like Freddie learned in the harshest way?
Arteta will surely drop those 3-points.
That’s etched somewhere, on a clean slate, I am certain. ?

Santori

He needs to be as he mentions “RUTHLESS”. We will see if his actions match his words. He cannot afford to be too charitable. Give everyone the benefit of the doubt sure but he should already know how certain players have performed. We do not have the luxury of time now. We are 11th in table. There are matches upcoming against Chelsea and United not to mention Bournemouth away not to be taken for granted. If he is too slow enforcing changes, instead (like Emery) attempt to enforce a new style over practical measures and hard work, we will falter… Read more »

We should consider playing Steve Bould.

Lets just hope that hes a better manager than player. Exciting times…….sigh

Cechmate

I supported Freddie taking over from Emery but was appalled by his selection and tactics, which were clearly in the Emery era. So, it is clear that Freddie got into Emery’s head and being the weakling that he is, Emery played to him and lost his job. Freddie comes in, plays his fav u23 players, when that doesn’t work, he starts placing the blame on board’s doorstep. It was a great opportunity for him to manage a club like Arsenal – even Ole came in as a caretaker but has managed to hold on for over a year, but freddie… Read more »

Arteta trivia. He has perfectly normal hair. It used to be unruly, but one day he looked in the mirror and told it to stay put or face the consequences. It’s never dared to move since.

I'm 14 Again

Can’t wait for this team to find its mojo under Arteta and deliver Art-Ball…

I’LL see myself out now.

That was terrible.
