Martinelli gets Brazil nod as they step up Olympic preparations

Brazil’s under-23s have selected Gabriel Martinelli for a training camp during March’s Interlull as they prepare for the Tokyo Olympics in August.

Brazil were scheduled to play friendly games against South Korea and Egypt in the United Arab Emirates but both have been cancelled due to the threat posed by coronavirus. It’s possible new fixtures could be arranged.

Brazil qualified for the XXXII Olympiad last month when they finished runners-up in the final stage of the 2020 CONMEBOL Pre-Olympic Tournament in Colombia.

Martinelli was due to feature in that competition but Arsenal, as was their right, wouldn’t release him as the matches fell outside the agreed FIFA calendar.

The latest call-up suggests that Martinelli is definitely under consideration for a trip to Japan in late July which would put his involvement in the opening weeks of the new Premier League campaign in doubt.

The Olympic Committee maintains that Tokyo 2020 will go ahead despite the current quarantine lockdowns that are affecting large swathes of the world.

Great young player. Would rather keep him at home though, playing for us.

We should use the crone-virus as an excuse.

Incidentally, if you know any crones warn them to take care. And wearing a mask is always recommended for crones.

Didn’t Timothy Stillman retweet a Portuguese tweet last night that GM was *not* selected, hence freeing him up for Italian duty instead should he choose?

Actually it was 2 hours ago.

This being the u23 I guess it won’t bind him to Brazil yet. Also friendly matches don’t count.

That being said, I can’t see him choosing to play for Italy.

Have fun and come back in one peace.

No way the Olympics will happen in any case.

Hope Arsenal veto his involvement in this bs tournament this summer. Much more important that he has a full preseason with the team that pays his wages.

Edu hit gold with this player so hopefully he is right about Mari. Love his attitude and drive. As mentioned complete other picture to Pepe whom we paid 72m for and still sporadic performances, poor return on take ons and not good enough with his tepid defensive work rate. BUT you don’t hit a Martinelli all the time as well so its understandable to go for the bigger names with a bit more dosh behind. How much is the issue and in Pepe, I would suggest we bit off a bit too much and may now have to pay the… Read more »

They should reconsider the Olympics taking place. Postpone it till the world weathers this corona storm.

Good for him. The more games he plays the better he will get. Some guy called messi also played in the Olympics early in his career.
