Saka nominated for PFA Young Player of the Year

Bukayo Saka’s fine performances during the 2019/20 campaign have earned him a place on the shortlist for PFA Young Player of the Year.

The 18-year-old played 37 times for the Gunners across all competitions, registering 11 assists and scoring four goals.

Bukayo faces stiff competition to win. The other nominees are Tammy Abraham, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mason Greenwood, Mason Mount, Marcus Rashford

Five Gunners have won the gong in the past; Tony Adams, Paul Merson, Nicolas Anelka, Cesc Fabregas and Jack Wilshere. He’s certainly in esteemed company.

Saka’s nomination comes on the same day that he could make his debut for England under-21s. They play against Kosovo this evening in the first game of qualification for the European Championships which will be held in Hungary and Slovenia next summer. Who knows, by the time that tournament comes around, Bukayo might be playing for the senior side.

The senior award will be contested solely by Liverpool and Manchester City players. Trent Alexander-Arnold, Kevin De Bruyne, Virgil van Dijk, Jordan Henderson, Sadio Mane and Raheem Sterling all made the cut.

Good news and a deserved nomination. He must be in with a chance, so fingers crossed.

DPK

I love Saka, he’s sensational. I am delighted for him that he is nominated….but Alexander Arnold is going to win it (deservedly so)

Adiddledog

Saka’s stats only marginally lower than TTAs in 1300 less minutes playing for a much less able team

David C

It’s Trent all day, but it’s nice to see Saka nominated.

Tucker

Congrats Bukayo, just reward for a blinding season.

How Auba isn’t at least nominated for the senior award is beyond me. Had a better season in a far poorer team than Sterling at least

Eternal Titi Berg Pat Nostalgia

Auba should have been in there. It tells what people think of Arsenal these days. But I will go for Mane or Sterling.

Bim

Good news and well deserved for Bukayo. I know I’m biased, but I’m a bit surprised Auba didn’t get a nod for the main award.

Francesc

Hate to say it, but although he has done well in the FA cup, his PL goals have not come when required the most. Flat track bully of sorts.

Francesc

8 goals against relegated Norwich and Watford and 5 goals against 14 games against sides above us.

A Different George

Aubamayang has certainly disappointed against big teams, especially recently at Wembley. Not a single hat trick. Crap player.

Vaibhav

What do you want from him tbh. Webare playing poorly as a team against opposition above us. So blaming it squarely on Auba is unfair.

Francesc

Saka has to start every game. Period.

Tommmy

I’d probably say KDB for the main and TAA for the young player but Saka will surely won’t this before he’s 21. Great season and can’t wait to see more of him!

Tommmy

Win this*

Francesc

I would say TAA for balon d or but ok

Eternal Titi Berg Pat Nostalgia

There is no ballon d’or this year. It should have gone to Lewandowski but the ballon d’or thing is skewed in favour of Messi or Ronaldo. None of these two deserved it this year so they used COVID to cancel it.

A Different George

And if not Lewandowski, then Mbappe, or Immobile, and several others. Alexander-Arnold is a very good player, but the idea that he is the best footballer in the world is nonsensical; he is not even the best player on his team (Van Dijk, obviously, and Alison in my opinion).

Pau

Those days when we had nominations for this season after season.

A Voice in the Noise

Pretty sure TAA will win it, but huge pat on the back for Saka to be nominated! And very well deserved too!

OnlyBeingHonest

Must be him or Greenwood?

OnlyBeingHonest

Or Trent sorry missed the obvious one ??

gooner

Wishing our boy the best. Playing out of position and owning it is underrated.

That aside, some of these awards are meaningless. Yes Pool won the league but they already got medals for it as a team. How you convince me that individually Mane and sterling had a better season than Vardy, Auba or even Ings is impossible.

It’s like saying you were the best player in the league, not because you played better than anyone else but because your teammates played better than other players

Francesc

Poor VVD is not even getting a proper mention for PFA POTY, let alone balon d or when clearly it is him who has transformed the fuck out of this liverpool team. Henderson was good but he couldn’t do much before VVD arrived could he..

DPK

Van Dijk win the PFA Award last season & was 2nd in Ballon D’or voting….so what exactly are you on about ?

Francesc

So just because he won once he cant win it again? You seem quite outdated

DPK

You, on the other hand, seem quite unhinged. God knows what point you think you are trying to make.

Riku

He is still the reason

Fuzz

Martinelli next year!

Adiddledog

Saka next year, Martinelli in 2021-2022!

Twatsloch

Saks really has been the revelation of this as well as the tail end of the previous season.

Meanwhile this guy (Sanchez) reveals he didn’t want to be at Man U after merely one training session. What a tool!

https://www.theguardian.com/football/2020/sep/04/alexis-sanchez-wanted-to-leave-manchester-united-after-one-training-session

arsepedant

After one training session with Moronho, I’d want to leave too.

Twatsloch

It was so awful for him at Arsenal he was desperate to go anywhere and God heard him and sent him to Mourinho. The old saying of careful what you wish for springs to mind.

shokim

This kid is going places. Good luck to him. Saka may not win but being nominated is an acknowledgment of his standout season in 2019/2020.

Santori

Great little player for us. Our left flank looks solid with him next season and he should get opportunity as the main option. In Charity shield was functioning on right to great effect responsible for the goals… BUT I suspect as well the Willian signing (Which I am not enamoured with considering length of deal on high salary at 32yrs)…as much an insurance on erratic Pepe (particularly his defensive output albeit he is showing signs of improvement particularly finals) as it is maybe to give us another option on the left for young Saka as Martinelli is knocked. The one… Read more »

Martinelli IMO should be playing at CF. One reason I prefer Laca retained is he is younger than Auba at 29yrs to 31yrs and has one more year on contract to Auba. Another reason is he is better retaining the ball and playing others into the box, competitive in tight confines and under stress. Auba I feel we should let go now with his price at its highest. Extending on 3 years at high salary to me is a business mistake. he likely will give us another great season but thereafter he will carry risk. Particularly with Martinelli potentially able… Read more »

Tekkers

I hear the TAA call but Saka has shown the most talent and is the youngest. He’s played in several positions and not just during a period where his team were steamrolling everything in sight. Be interesting to see what position he ends up nailing down in what is looking to be a great career.

Riku

Saka or Trent

Riku

Virgil should get it , he made the difference at Liverpool, taken for granted a bit so soon

Gutbukkit Deffrolla

Don’t think Virgil is going to win the Young Player of the year award. Don’t give a stuff who wins the creaky old player of the year one. No Arsenal players in there because the folks choosing who to nominate rarely look outside the Top 3 of the PL
