Arsenal to face Brentford in 2021/22 season opener

Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal will face newly-promoted Brentford at the Community Stadium in the opening game of the 2021/22 season.

The Gunners will then face last season’s Champions League finalists in successive weeks with Chelsea visiting the Emirates and Manchester City hosting us at the Etihad.

The north London derbies have been pencilled in for 25 September (H) and 15 January (A).

The busy Christmas schedule looks, in theory, relatively kind with games againsts West Ham, Leeds, Norwich and Wolves set to take place inside two weeks.

2022 starts with City visiting the Emirates and the season will end with Everton coming to London.

2021/22 will be the first season since 1995/96 that Arsenal won’t be appearing in Europe. That means fewer fixtures and the likelihood of more Saturday football.

Sky Sports, BT Sport and Amazon will share the broadcast rights in the UK again, however, with stadiums due to return to full capacity we’ll have to get used to the old routine of some matches not being available (via legal means).

TV selections haven’t been made yet so all of the below dates are subject to change.

After the Leicester game in end of Oct, we will see if Arteta should be staying or not.

Saps

100% agree.
Enough sample size.

Comedian

Early recruitment matters too. The sooner the players are signed the better. Its not like anyone is paying the club to delay transfer news. Good for PR not for the team. Think if we had activated Partey’s release at start of transfer window than at the end, we might have better results along the way.

OurTitA

Speaking of recruitments, it’s being reported that Bernardo Silva wants out due to lack of playing time. If he were to be available for a fee of around €50-60 mil ( A big IF I know), should we go for him?
He can pretty much play all over the attacking third, out on the wings, through the middle as false 9 or a no 10 and would offer a lot of creative juices. I think that he’d be perfectly suitable for the style that Arteta wishes to play

Heavenly Chapecoense

But would Bernado Silva want to downgrade to Arsenal’s level?
Do you think he will be impressed by Arteta’s:
“We have a process, we are not at the beginning, we are not at the end of it, we are in the middle of it”?

Dave Cee

I’d be happy if Bernardo took the entire transfer budget, levels above anything we currently have

Teta's cult of personality

He’s undoubtedly better than any midfielder currently in our squad but €50-60 million is a massive waste of money for someone like Bernado Silva. £35 million maximum is his real value in my opinion. He is to Man City, what Willian was to Chelsea and Giroud was to us. A good workhorse but very patchy and inconsistent end product. To have the number of goal contributions he has in such a dominant side like City is just not good enough for that transfer fee. Pundits have said he’s the heir to David Silva but in the last two seasons, he’s… Read more »

Thierry Bergkamp (non negotiable)

I got to the end of November and thought that’s when we’ll know where the team is

karl

We’ll be well and truly committed to the Arteta way by then with all the squad decisions he will have made. Don’t expect any change unless it goes spectacularly wrong.

Eric Blair

I’d say that run from Leicester on 30th October to Everton on 4th December will be pivotal, a mini death run if you like. Come out of that in decent shape and near the top 4 then we and Arteta are in business. Overall a nicely spread out group of fixtures, no real death runs which I like because playing 3 or 4 massive games in a couple of weeks is too sapping. The run in from Easter on looks good, we just need to be in with a shout of top 4 when Brighton come to town and I… Read more »

Heavenly Chapecoense

If out of top six at that point, should be sacked. Top four being the season objective.

gooner

Kind ending to the season. We should easily see out our 12 point gap at the top to city with 7 games to go

Graeb

Well we start the season in top spot (no arguments now over AFC Bournemouth trying to claim it!) and it would be nice to set a new record by being there every week.

karl

3.00pm Saturday afternoon. That is what I call a football treat!

Goonerjag

Ok – which couple of cunts downvoted that sentiment?!

Smokin'Gunner

I’m guessing the ones who like watching our games on TV

Indiegooner

Well, the two Kroenkes were not planning on Saturday afternoon football. So, there you have your answer.

Heavenly Chapecoense

It is like:
I failed all my exams, I won’t have to move out of my parents house to go to university. This is really cool.

Runcorn Gooner

Still think we are a big enough draw for a lot of 17.30 Saturday and Prime time Sunday fixtures particularly if we are winning.

Nzini

That’s 3 points then

Graham

Not the worst start actually. I’d be looking for 3 points each against Brentford, Norwich Burnley, Brighton and Crystal Palace. Say if we lose the Chelsea and Man City games then draw the Spurs game that means ideally we need to win against either Leicester or Aston Villa. That then gives us 20 pts from 10 games and hopefully puts us in the top four early on.

myrtle

Disagree, it’s a pretty terrible start in my book. Brentford will be well up for it, then we’ve got Chelsea, city and another promoted team after that. Followed by Burnley away and the Spuds.
Pessimist hat firmly on, but I’d see us struggling to get over three wins from that lot.

Fatgooner

It’s a nasty start that’s probably got Arteta in a cold sweat.

Three of the first six games are against top-six sides, including the champions. If we lose them and say draw two of the “easy” games then we’ll be in the bottom half of the table by the beginning of October. And the pressure will be on him.

Alex

Well we beat Chelsea with the team we cobbled together this year and they beat City so no reason to expect we can’t beat anyone we have to really.

In fact I would suggest thinking any other way is counter productive and potentially foreshadowing

Teta's cult of personality

I hope Arteta will be keeping an eye on his blood pressure during that period.

Bob

For sure, and that’s conservative I’d say, we did the double over Chelsea last season. Given the relegation form to end of Nov, there is a lot to look forward to next season as we dramatically improved after that. Shame about the haters who feed off negative drama!

Bobby

Looking at this list, I’m suddenly fairly happy about lack European games. Also how few potential gimmes there are in the PL now. Which is both a reflection of overall quality and Arsenal’s current state.

Man Manny

38 games as usual. No surprises there.
The difference this time is we won’t have many midweek games in between. That should count as an advantage for us.
If the management team is as decisive as they should in the transfer market, we have a chance to be in the top 4 permutations.

allezkev

Brentford are a bit of a Jonah club to Arsenal so that’s a really tricky opening day fixture.

Martin R

We’ve only played Brentford 3 times since 1939 so I can’t exactly see how they can be regarded as a Jonah side. We won 2 and drew 1 of those games.

Tapps

Everton at home last game of the season. So a 4-0 win, with the final one coming from our captain and talisman – to seal the title!

Nainsley Aitland Miles

Our new captain T. Adams. (Tyler).

Ron Delph

Easy peasy! Champions!

shokim

Reckon with not being in Europe next season, we should churn out games with more wins / better performances. However it still depends very much on who’s in the squad and Arteta’s tactics. COYG!

pitzkale

So many Saturday fixtures! I love it!

Jo John

“provisional” – don’t expect too many of our fixtures to be on Saturday at 3pm once SKY, BT & Amazon get their hands on the list…..

TCEyes

Love analysing the fixtures.

Random stat – we only leave the capital three times in 17 games during the 4&1/2 month period 27 Dec – 14 May. (Wolves, Villa & Saints).

Without Europe competition we should be able to get some serious training sessions and R&R done at Colney in that time.

Lakshya

Question is will that be with Arteta or a new manager?
I for sure hope Arteta gets a good first half season and we stick with him! But most of the big matches are away in the first half (City, Utd, Leic, Liv), just like the last season. I think the team adjustments made for those games do not allow us to get settled in our playing style.

Merlin’s Panini

Never good to start with a newly promoted side. There’s always one upset with those games on the first day. Just hope it’s not us on the end of it. Chelsea and City immediately after makes for one hell of a tough start.

We’ll be fine. We beat Fulham 3-0 same game last season. Even Willian was unstoppable that day.

Gooner84

Think we will be looking for a new manager come Christmas, still believe he should of gone last season crim times to be an Arsenal fan.

The Beast

Think we’ve got a decent chance of a strong start with no midweek matches and I’m hoping we can carry on some of our form from the 2nd half of last season.

It could all go wrong but if you can’t be optimistic before a ball’s kicked, what’s the point?

Viv The 🐐

The start will be very tough. It will be even tougher, when everybody screams Arteta out after a few games. I think that will be the decisive factor in our season: At which point might Arteta be bullied out. If we sack him under 10 games in, than the clubs is a more serious mess than before. Either you trust him going into the season or you are not. The inbetween is the most dangerous.

Tombo

That is a tough start. need to do our business early and be ready to go from the start. We can’t afford to be faffing with last minute signings and phasing them in. The flip side is if we start strong we can really set a marker.

K9ine

Looks like #arteteaout starts early. Tricky start to be fair, but we play everyone twice no? Let’s just target at least 25 wins next season at the barest minimum.

Ric

25 wins lol we only won 26 during the Invincible’s season.

But a man can dream!

K9ine

And u think it is not achievable? Perhaps our biggest problem is not setting a high enough target to push us forward. 25 wins is 75 points. Add a few draws and make provision for 8 losses and u are guaranteed top 2. It is achievable

gunnertron

FFS Another season of playing big teams in the first 3 or so games. I do hope we get some better results this time out.

Neil Bamford

It’s a tough one. I’m just hoping that with the right signings and a decent summer we can get going again.

#COYG

Once a gunner

May this season be one good season to remember for good.

Naked Cygan

Arteta should go now and do us all a favor. Why waste another season???

The Beast

Who would you bring in?

Naked Cygan

I would bring someone who can beat Unai Emery for one. Someone with experience. Just because you sit next to Pep does not make you qualified to manage Arsenal. If we continue to stay out of the top 6 we might have issues find a top manager, and end up looking for low-grade managers like Fonseca. At this point I would say Rafa Benitez maybe. We are not in Europe anymore and the damage is done so hard to bring top-quality manager, but Rafa might be a start.

The Beast

Interesting. You consider Benitez to be a step up on Fonseca?

Would you be happy with the style of play?

Man Manny

You’ve apparently been dying to have a dig at them. It had to be Fonseca.

Martin R

You still here? You could do us all a favour and go now.

Alex

I see us winning the league against Man U on 23rd April 👍🏻

Tottenham away on 15th January 2022 – absolutely awful timing as Aubameyang, Partey, Pepe, Elneny will be at the African Nations Cup (group stages start 9 January). Spurs will only be missing Aurier. Burnley at home the following week should be manageable though, but Wolves away on 8th Feb may come too soon for some of them (AFCON Final is 6 February 2022). Two FA Cup rounds around this time too – I suspect Third round on January 8th and Fourth round on February 5th. With no Europe, I’d expect strong line-ups in both domestic cups this season – depending… Read more »

GoonerMike

I see Arteta winning Manager of the month in August

BigArse

FFS!! We have to play everybody twice?!?! Again!?!? Aaarrgggh!!!!!

André Santos

12 ponit in first 10 game can’t see them starting well but hopefully they stay up
