Arsenal draw Wolfsburg in Women’s Champions League Quarter-Finals

Arsenal will play Wolfsburg in the Women’s Champions League quarter-finals. The Gunners qualified in second place in their group, below Barcelona but above Hoffenheim and Koge, earning them passage to their 14th Champions League quarter-final- which is a competition record.

The first leg will be played at Meadow Park on 22nd or 23rd March with the away leg to take place in Germany on 30th or 31st March. If the Gunners overcome in the quarter-finals, they will meet the winners of Barcelona v Real Madrid in April in the semi-final, with the final taking place in Turin in May. Wolfsburg have former Arsenal players Dominique Janssen and Jill Roord in their squad, while Arsenal’s Noelle Maritz spent seven years and won the UWCL with them.

Later on today, Arsenal will also discover their opponents in the quarter-finals of the Conti Cup, Jonas Eidevall’s team had a bye into the quarter-finals alongside Chelsea due to their participation in the Champions League this year, a trophy which Arsenal have won and Chelsea have not, just in case you forgot.

Happy with the draw all things considered. I will try and see the Barca Madrid game too. COYG!

I thought we couldn’t face barca again until the final 😕

let’s focus on the quarter first🌞One match at a time. Beat Wolf first and we can talk about what will happen afterwards.

I watched the Chelsea / Wolfsburg 2nd game.
Wolfsburg’s Mid-field is going really give us trouble if we hold onto the ball for more than two touches. Lena Oberdorf at # 6 is something special.

Our midfield is too lightweight. Hope Jonas realise this and sign a solid DM.
I have zero confidence on our defense . They’re just not good enough bar Leah. It’ll be hard to get a Centre half in the January transfer window.
I was hoping we could get Alanna Cook from NWSL on loan, but that would be difficult because of the challenge cup.
Hope Jonas get somebody from somewhere who is not cup-tied.

I agree. There is a lot of softness in our defensive group–and just not a lot of real playmakers. If we played Wolfsburg now, there’s no doubt in my mind we’d get beat. If Williamson is back by March, our chances improve–but by how much?

yimlt

I doubt if Jonas will sign any midfielder again given we have quite many options in the midfield and just signed mana and frida. I think he’d rather spend time on making the current formation work better than getting new signs and waiting for them to adapt or combine together. I hope he will sign a good defender who can work with williamson at the back but again we have options to choose from now…He may not have any plans to sign anyone at all but let’s see.

Next round not for another 3 months !?

These tournaments are absurd. As I’ve mentioned before, they have too many teams–and keep adding more!; and there are too many matches dragged out over a period of time that is FAR too long. And does anybody really care about the Conti Cup?

Chrishgooner

Anybody who thought we would be a realistic challenger for the UWCL title this season is delusional.
Six months into his appointment and recent CL matches have shown, that although progress has been made there is much to be done to compete at this level.
The Conti? At this point, I’d say we (AWFC) care about winning any trophy.
Our last win in 2018, Joe’s first season, was the springboard to winning the WSL title in 2019.

DB’s first touch

Yes, now that you mention it, I do recall you mentioning this before once or twice😁

Gary

Wolfsburg, and then Barcelona?? 😂
It’s already over for us in the UWCL
These teams will really expose and tear us apart.. honestly.

Arsenal is the weakest side left in the UWCL !
And don’t reply me to say/defend rubbish, because we are only good against weak and low budget teams 🥺

Chrishgooner

You are a real bundle of joy!
The team are not “rubbish” and they are not the weakest left in the UWCL.
