Beth Mead signs new Arsenal contract

Beth Mead has signed a new contract with Arsenal. The England international, who joined the club from Sunderland in 2017, has penned new terms following an outstanding year, in which she won the European Championships with England, winning the Golden Boot and player of the tournament in the bargain.

Mead was also voted as Arsenal’s player of the season for 2021-22 by both the Arsenal Women Supporters Club and readers of Arsenal.com. She finished as runner-up to Alexia Putellas in this year’s Ballon D’Or. Alas, Beth’s 2022 ended in inauspicious circumstances and she is currently recovering from an ACL injury sustained last month.

“I’m so happy to have signed a new deal with Arsenal,” Beth told Arsenal.com. “This club is home for me – I’ve grown so much here as player and a person and I know we can achieve so much more together in the years to come. I want to compete to win the biggest trophies in the game and I know that the ambitions at Arsenal match my own, so I can’t wait to get back onto the pitch and help to deliver the success our supporters deserve.”

Head Coach Jonas Eidevall added: “It’s wonderful news that we have agreed a new deal with Beth. She is a world-class footballer and has proven that on the biggest stage of them all. I have so much admiration for the way she has handled success and adversity on and off the pitch over the past few years, and I’m sure she will approach the next few months with the positive attitude we all know Beth for.”

Head of Women’s Football Clare Wheatley said: “Everyone at Arsenal is delighted that Beth has signed a new contract here with us. In her five years with our club, Beth has grown into one of the best footballers in the world and her form over the past season has reached new heights. We were all so proud to watch her achieve her dreams in the summer and we are looking forward to welcoming her back to the pitch to pursue more success with Arsenal.”

Congratulations on your new contract Beth and speedy recovery.

And now up for Sports Personality of the Year! Getting voting on the day!

chig

Omg such happy news after such a terrible day yesterday with Viv’s injury! Hooray!

sloshburger

i heard through the grapevine that her wage demands were astronomical, in the region of 2,000 GBP / week

chig

Given her performance in the Euros I wouldn’t be surprised if she sells more tickets and shirts for the club than Viv.

timorous me

I’m going to just roll with the idea that this is a joke making fun of the difference in pay between women and men in the game.

OkochaDaMan

I agree. Reads like a joke to me.

That Ballon D’Or decision was a travesty

Excellent news!

Get in! She is such a great player and role model. So pleased she has committed to the club and vice versa.

Tim do you know the length of the contract? I read somewhere (possibly from you) that the typical contracts for female pros are usually for a shorter duration than for male pros?

Fun Gunner

I’m not Tim, but yes I think the contracts tend to be shorter. Two years is standard, three years and one year occasionally. More than three years is very rare.

Peter Story Teller

Fun Gunner is correct. What intrigues me is why someone feels the need to down vote a post which is simply stating a fact. It is not an opinion or controversial. Then again, most of the posts in this thread have a single down vote so can it be assumed that the same imbicile has down voted everyone for offering Meado congratulations and expressing their satisfaction that we have secured her services for a further 1, 2 or 3 seasons?

Probably a child

TTIreland

There is always some INCEL lurker on this page that down votes all comments. I hope they get some help.

Kennington Gunner

Thanks Fun Gunner 👍

Upvotes to you and Peter Story Teller. Not just because of your replies to this thread but for your consistent positive contributions.

Thanks Beth, now the big question is who is going to play for her in the meantime, the situation of the inverted winger is interesting and promising but they need time to learn to play like that, Stina is pulled off to the right and Viv( now Frida) get more in the box but I can see the contrary defensive have more women to defend, we need to come back to the two wide winger style running the sides like before.
