Confirmed: Omar Rekik joins Wigan on loan

Arsenal have confirmed that Omar Rekik will spend the second half of the season on loan at Wigan Athletic.

The Tunisia international joins fellow Arsenal youngster Miguel Azeez at the DW Stadium after being recalled from his loan with Sparta Rotterdam.

When Azeez joined the Latics, ex-Gunner Kolo Toure was just getting his feet under the managerial desk. However, after overseeing a further downturn in form that now sees the club bottom of the Championship, the ‘Invincible’ and his assistants, including Kevin Betsy, have been sacked. They lasted less than two months.

Under new boss Shaun Maloney, Rekik hopes he can help Wigan avoid relegation.

“It will be a difficult (challenge), but we will try and do our best during the rest of the season,” he said in his first interview with the club’s website.

“For myself, I want to get as much playing time as I can, and it’s up to me how I perform in the training sessions.

“For the Wigan fans, I’m here to fight. A big Club like this should not be going down, so we will try and do our best (to keep this Football Club in the division). It’s not going to be easy but I’m ready for the challenge!”

Best of luck to Omar in his new surroundings.

Leon

This will be very good for his development to be playing for a struggling team. It is easy to turn up for a team that is doing well and confident but to perform for a team like Wigan who are slap bang at the bottom takes a lot more character.

Good luck Omar. Show Rotterdam what they are missing.
