Post-Sp*rs quotes round-up: Arteta, Postecoglou, Timber, Son, Wright, Redknapp, Upson & more

Arsenal made it five games unbeaten against Sp*rs as Gabriel Magalhaes’ 64th-minute header secured a 1-0 victory in a tight north London derby.

Here’s what the managers, players, pundits and stattos made of the action…

Mikel Arteta on his side’s win…

The resilience we showed. We knew it was going to be a really tough match, a great atmosphere but we knew we had a big threat on set-plays. We weren’t the best on the ball today but the way we defended was top drawer.

Ange Postecoglou on his side’s defeat…

It’s disappointing, you want to win these games for a number of reasons but it’s been the tale of our season so far, we’ve been pretty good in all our games, dominated possession and creating chances, but if you don’t take them, especially against good teams then you’re always going to get punished. We switched off for a moment and got punished. We’ll keep doing what we’re doing . We just need to improve certain areas of our game, we’ll get there.

Jurrien Timber on enjoying the win…

I really did, for me the first time so even nicer. We did it three times in a row now and you felt the excitement in the dressing room after the game. You know how bad the fans want to win this game but it’s the same for every game. You prepare for every game the same way but it felt really nice winning this one.

Son Heung-min on set pieces proving costly again…

I think the football was there, we dominated the game. It’s just lacking the details. We conceded last season on the set pieces, two goals, and today also we conceded a set piece. It’s details that in big games change the results. It’s a really frustrating and painful result. I’m sure the fans are also very, very disappointed. We got to improve 100 per cent and move on. In a tough moment, we have to stick together.

Timber on how much work goes into set pieces…

A lot but it’s not only set pieces to be honest, it’s every detail we train on the training ground and it pays off as you can see.

Arteta on injuries affecting his tactical preparations…

I didn’t enjoy it because I didn’t sleep much. I looked at Sp*rs for four or five days, I had a super clear plan, I prepared everything, the sessions, the meetings, things like that and then one news we lose a player, then another news we lose a player, another news we lose a player, so I had to completely change it and adapt the plan to the players we had available. It was a great challenge.

Arteta on Saka’s injury…

No idea, no. Suddenly he went down, said he could not continue and we had to take him off.

Ian Wright celebrating Big Gabi’s goal…

Big Gabi. Woohooo. Woooohooooo. Set pieces again, baby. Come on! Come on the Gooners, come on the Gooners. Arghhhhhhhhhhh. We’re back!

Alan Shearer on Arsenal’s defence…

When you go one-nil down against this Arsenal team you have to do something very special to get back. They’ve got the best back four in the Premier League. Tottenham ended up lumping balls into the box which they love – it’s meat and drink. Without playing particularly well or having to play particularly well, they [Arsenal] have won. Arsenal were really impressive defensively. Tottenham were poor again.

__

Ian Wright on Arsenal’s win…

I thought Tottenham played into their hands a bit. Arsenal were very much in control for a team that didn’t actually have that much control in their midfield. They deserved their win.

Matthew Upson on Arsenal winning without key players…

Arsenal should celebrate this, this is a huge team effort. To be without Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard. Two huge players for this team, very rarely have we watched a team without either of them in it. It’s just a massive statement of the belief of where they can take it. To come here in the north London derby against a good Tottenham team who have started the season fairly well. They didn’t put a foot wrong in that sense.

Les Ferdinand on Arsenal’s goal…

He [Romero] gets a little shove in his back. If a centre forward does that, the referee gives a foul. They don’t even look at it. He needs to be stronger and it’s poor defending but he does get shoved in his back.

Source: Sky Sports Super Sunday

Arteta on set piece coach Nicolas Jover being the best in his field…

In his field, in other fields, as a person, the relationship that we have, that’s why I made the decision to bring him to City when I was there and then to Arsenal. HIm and the staff, they have injected a belief into the players that there are many ways to win football matches. This is a really powerful one. He’s given us a lot. A big compliment to all of them.

__

Jamie Redknapp on Sp*rs’ set-piece record…

Tottenham can’t defend from corners, especially against this Arsenal side who are so good from them. It just shows you that it is the fine margins that wins football matches. There wasn’t that much between them in terms of play but that is a huge three points for Arsenal.

Source: Sky Sports Super Sunday

Theo Walcott on the nature of victory…

It really doesn’t matter how they got it – it was great result for Arsenal. They showed again that they can mix it up, because they played almost like a Jose Mourinho side to see the game out. As a team performance, probably the best comparison I can think of would be when Arsenal drew 0-0 at Manchester City last season. People wanted Arsenal to be more adventurous then, but they played with a system to get that result.

Gabriel Martinelli on Big Gabi grabbing the winner…

[Big Gabi] is really happy, he deserved that. He’s a guy that deserves everything that he’s been achieving, so happy with him, the performance and his goal.

We won, quote that.

C.B.

Not seen such an unhappy or upset Ange since Dirty Den handed over the Divorce papers on Christmas Day.

BillyKrystal

“It’s just who we are mate”

Like White and Rice

It is the history of the Tottenham.

Daveo

We won the quotes too …

PGunner

Fuck quotes, I love that last stat so very much. What a defence we have!

Daveod

Son saying they dominated the game??? Must be watching through the sh1tty Square between his fingers

Gooner7190

Wait…Son played? Did he know they had a cup final today? Cause I can’t recall him being on the pitch

Like White and Rice

Check our defenders’ pockets, you’ll find him.

Martin Mannion

Should have put Hoddle’s quote in there too.
Hoddle: ” “

Uzkido

Spurs are our regular customer

Goonertic

for us Gooners, perhaps we should call 3 point lane

Michael

The Arsenal beat Sp*rs so I am very happy. I have hated Sp*rs since about 1967 and wish them only failure and relegation. Ange ball is perfect for them because they cannot win!

OdalGooner

In fairness (and I appreciate your sentiments) it’s not really down to Ange. It’s Tottenham. They could have Pep, Arsene, Mikel and Satan Himself managing them at the same time, and they’d still be Tottenham.

TeeCee

I believe that Satan turned the job down.
He just didn’t want to sully his reputation.

Matt

Satan has already managed them. They sacked him just before a cup final and he’s been whining about it ever since.

Matt

I admire and thoroughly endorse this level of pettiness. I also agree that Ange ball won’t see them win anything. The premier league has moved so far beyond “Go out and play”. He’ll put out pretty teams who he thinks “should” have won the game, but he’ll get beaten by smarter managers who understand the game on a deeper level. Ange is a guy at the pub who is good in a scrap – Arteta is a trained killer.

Dr. Gooner

From a Tottenham point of view, they must be feeling like a bugs bunny character: angrily flailing their limbs but being cheerfully held at arms length by a big bully.

Daveo

Best part is Ange actually thinks they created chances 🤣, bit like Ten Hags believing manure are actually a good team. Long may both last…

Goonertic

Impostergogulo…..being found out!

Ebo

The way Arteta talks about preparing for games, what he and the rest of the staff put into the tactical planning and what happens to him and those plans when we lose even just one player… more than a bugs bunny character it feels to me like they’re Yabushige going against Toranaga from Shogun. You’re going against the sharpest and most clinical mind in the game who also happens to be the most insanely competitive person. You’re not only going to lose but you’re going to look really silly for even trying.

Dr. Gooner

For Arsenal, that’s six points from Villa Park and The Great White Toilet! Any way you look at it, that’s two of the 5 most difficult away games of the season done after game week 4. That’s title winning form.

Daveo

We’ve Only dropped points to the FA/PMGOL this season

Serpent

Correction: if an attacker does a more obvious and high push there’s no review. At least if the defender is Gabriel against Newcastle last season…

thw14

The ability of this squad and manager to stay in the contest despite the most difficult circumstances is just a very very different thing than we’ve been used to for a while.

Naked Cygan

To be honest, I was expecting a draw today without Odegard and Rice. Against teams that really know how to play we can’t trust Partey and Jorginio in the long run. Also, we need a serious improvement from Martinelli. His end product is awful at this time. Overall this was an amazing result today 👏 👏 👏 👏.

Henrik

Thats spot on

Vonnie

His overall game was good, his finishing will get there.

Naked Cygan

Yes. Overall game is good, but he already had the finishing. For some reason it has gone.

Daveod

Yeah his defensive work was a huge asset today

OdalGooner

Martinelli was excellent when he had a regular partner on the left flank, like Saka has Blanco. It’ll come back, and I think it’ll come in the shape of Merino. Martinelli had lots of offensive movement, got balls into the box, and … should have passed it to Saka, but I can’t really blame him for wanting to prove to the doubters that he could whip one past the keeper. Martinelli has some things he does *really* well – but he can’t do those things alone. Once we get the left flank up and running like the right has been… Read more »

wrightstuff8

I agree with you. He’s so positive and he ran his socks of yesterday. He was immense in defense and a real dangerous outlet. Not worried about him re discovering his lethal finishing (we know he has it.)
I think Califori will also be a big help in unlocking the best outta Marti.

Vonnie

Paul Merson needs to fuck right off, shit stirring cunt.

89 again

I didnt agree with his analysis and Merse has had plenty of problems over the years but you’re talking about a man who played for our club for over a decade. Show some respect.

Santi’s Phonebox

Respect earns respect, Merse’s commentary needs more respect towards Arsenal, only then will he receive respect.

Daveo

Sorry man, just because he played for Arsenal doesn’t mean he has carte blanche rights to be a twat, and most of the time he is a twat.

89 again

I’m not saying he has carte blanche to be a twat I’m saying he has earned the right not to be called a cunt by some keyboard warrior on a comment page. Merse said what he said on live TV, where he is paid to at least appear to be trying to be objective, he gets some leeway for that and he gets some leeway for representing the club. If anyone has constructive criticisms of his argument I’m all up for hearing them. If the best they can come up with is ‘fuck right off cunt’ I’m going to challenge… Read more »

Death by 300,000 Passes

#Trumpettwats

turcofeo

It still surprises me almost every game how we’ve become a team that constantly and effectively uses the so-called ‘dark arts’. We’ve been doing this for a while now, but I guess my surprise comes from getting used to the bullying we suffered from other teams during Wenger’s last decade in charge. I’m all for it, as we still play beautiful football, and it’s so satisfying to see things like Big Gabi shoving Romero just enough to get him away but no so much as to bring him down for the goal. And Jorginho going down in the last 10… Read more »

Absolute Camel

What’s Les Ferdinand on about there?! Seeing things no one else sees 😂

Ebo

I think he wants someone to give him a shove in the back, and by shove I mean shove something inside and by back I mean backside

Ebo

For once I agree with the downvotes, that was a completely classless joke made in bad taste. I should just be more direct and say Les Ferdinand should go fuck himself.

Having said that, assuming Les has standard male anatomy, and even though the logistics are fairly complicated, the only place he could possibly go fuck himself is in his backside 🤷

Vonnie

And Merson backing him up……..

AusGunner

There was definitely a shove in the back to make space by Gabi. Would’ve been pretty soft though.

Rufusstan

Normally it the ref thinking: ‘its a bit marginal, but its Arsenal so I’ll give a foul/card/whatever.’ It feels nice to get away with it for once.

TeeCee

Maybe Les would like to rewatch that Newcastle goal from last season to see what an obvious shove in a defender’s back really looks like.
I guess he’d find a reason that’s OK though, ‘cos he played for those stripey cunts as well.

Emi Rates

Note the pain in Son’s comments. This really matters to him and his team.

Note also the mind numbing dullness emanating from every letter in Shearer’s comment. Shearer could make the most beautiful woman undressing in front of you unappealing with his commentry. The man is clearly talented. It’s just that his particular talent is of no use to man or beast.

Like White and Rice

This was the biggest match of the season for them, and they lost at home to short-handed Arsenal.
Were they trying to lose again like a few months ago? No, this time they were doing their very best, I guess? It’s hard to tell the difference.

AusGunner

Risky to do at 0-1 but an “are you trying to lose again?” chant would have been extremely enjoyable

ANOTHER win at the armitage shanks arena
