Palmeiras confirm failed attempt to sign Jesus

Brazilian side Palmeiras have confirmed that they attempted to recruit former player Gabriel Jesus in the summer but were met with a stern ‘no’ from Arsenal.

Towards the end of last season, there were rumours that the Gunners were open to selling the striker whose struggles for fitness and form since the Qatar World Cup have been well-documented.

It’s possible that was indeed the case at one point – Arsenal made an approach for RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko in May- but ultimately Edu and Mikel Arteta decided to stick with Jesus who spent the off-season in his home country doing his utmost to rehabilitate a niggly knee injury.

Would Jesus have been interested in a return to his boyhood club? Who knows. But for now, the matter is closed.

Speaking this week, Palmeiras’s president Leila Pereira explained: “Gabriel Jesus is not coming. We got in touch with Arsenal, and they said ‘Leila, there are no conditions whatsoever. We are not going to negotiate the player.’

“The subject is closed.”

Jesus is under contract at Arsenal until 2027. It remains to be seen whether the subject remains closed at the end of this campaign. We suspect not.

Can they take him for free in January please?

Dr. Gooner

Please tell me you’re not serious.

Mootilated

I am serious, and don’t call me Please

Dr. Gooner

I’m at a complete loss for how someone can seriously have this opinion while supporting Arsenal football club.

Declan Fried Rice with Egg

Only if you promise that we are getting Nico Williams

Goonermaybaj

Get over yourself, are you going to play in his stead.Thats how most of you wanted rid of Partey in the summer, how’s that turned out now?

Determination Cultured

Gab jesus and zinchenko should be sold to fulham

Ash

No wonder the downvotes, everyone knows why would Fulham downgrade?

Dr. Gooner

Wtf is up with people today

Skinny Ricki

Indeed! Who needs all the negativity on a dark, dank day in October? Yes, Jesus isn’t the electrifying force he was in the first part of his Arsenal career (pre-knee injury) – but we’re so quick to write people off. He looked sharp yesterday, and could get back to his brilliant best. Then again he might not, but while he’s here and giving us 100% I will support him.

Dr. Gooner

I should just play the second part of Bukayo’s goal celebration from yesterday on repeat. Blablabla… SHhhhhhh. The pros are at work. Pay attention.

Ealing

they were brought in to improve the team, when we were not qualifying for Champions League, with them we achieved it in the first season. unfortunately, that’s been their best season, and in terms of goals for GJ and attendances for Z, i don’t think their will improve on their first outing, partly because the team has improved, and they can’t be regulars anymore.

Mootilated

if they were so good, City would not have felt they could be replaced

Declan Fried Rice with Egg

City will always sell if the player does not want to be there anymore.. Gundo, Cancelo and Palmer just to name a few.

Filpo

Many of us wanted to sell Partey too, just look at him now.. Same things easily can happen with Jesus too.

Thierry Bergkamp (non negotiable)

Should take the money for Jesus, if a decent offer comes and give Zinchenko to Zelenskyy

mjc1892

Thought he looked fairly lively when he came on yesterday, but the writing is definitely on the wall.
So far the Sterling gamble is really, really not paying off, and Martinelli is fast moving from a concern to a squad upgrade in waiting.
Do people still have faith in the latter? I love him so much when on song but I’m starting to really lose faith now he’s going to turn it around. I understand he’s a confidence player but Arteta has kept fairly unwavering faith in him for over a year now despite very poor production.

Mick Malthouse

His lack of finishing is a real problem. We need a Saka like threat from the left wing.

Spanish Gooner

I think we are too good for Martinelli, in the sense that because teams now know our quality 90% of games are against a dirty mid/deep block which is where a player like Martinelli suffers. He was at his best when there was a perception we could be ‘got at’ before Qatar, and I think has been excellent in the Champions League where there tends to be more even matchups. He reminds me a lot of Walcott – Messi (who presumably only watched him in the CL) once said England would have won the World Cup if Walcott had played,… Read more »

mc1892

I get where you’re coming from, but I also think he’s massively lost his potency on the counter. Yesterday he received the ball in so many good positions isolated against TAA (who has always struggled against him), and just ran into Konate or misplaced a pass/ miscontrolled it.

Dr. Gooner

Konate dominated him. It happens. My dude is not Vini Jr or Bukayo Saka. Still a damn good player tho. Massive impact on the game. He made Konate have to babysit Trent all game, that opened up spaces centrally for runs into the box. Could’ve had a couple of assists as well. Martinelli is NOT a problem.

Matthinc

Yeah deffo agree

Dr. Gooner

Konate won all the duels against him. It happens. Konate is one of the best channel defenders in the game and my dude is not Vini Jr or Bukayo Saka. Still a damn good player tho. Massive impact on the game. He made Konate have to babysit Trent all game, that opened up spaces centrally for runs into the box and overloads on the left. Could’ve had a couple of assists as well. Martinelli is NOT a problem.

wrightstuff8

Agree 100% – all this guff against martinelli annoys me. He was MOTM and the difference maker in mid week against shaktar for goodness sake.

Heavenly Chapecoense

I predicted Kane would find himself in EFL Championship very quickly and also said Martinelli was a future RVP. Hmm, give me three more years, all that will come true.

mc1892

Haha I had exactly the same predictions funnily enough. Not quite as egregious as my bet with a friend that Carl Jenkinson would be England’s starting RB when he first made his ‘breakthrough’ (if you can call it that), but not far off..

Dr. Gooner

RVP is a strange comp… He’s Marc Overmars, Theo Walcott, that sort of player. Straight line big space runner and outlet.

Canon Fodder

Theo had goals in him though, over 100 for Arsenal; I don’t think that Martinelli will match that level of productivity

Ealing

statistically Theo is still ahead, but in the PL they are about even, at around 1/4 but Theo as a lot of goals in minor competition when Martinelli is usually rested.

Dr. Gooner

I don’t care about how many they score when I compare profiles. It’s about playing style, profile, not output. Dwight McNeil is a profile similar to David Beckham. That doesn’t mean they’re the same guy. The profile explains how they fit into the game.

Matthinc

I love Martinelli. He will come good. He is just not getting the luck and his confidence in front of goal has gone which is affecting his decision making/shot placement. We know he’s got it! But since that injury at Sheffield United he has not regained his ruthlessness.

ALBangbang

I really hoped this season he’d get back to being the player we hoped for again but it doesn’t look likely. We were foolish to go into the season with our backup striker being one that can’t hit a cow’s arse with a banjo.

SLC Gooner

He’s got great control, and his dribbling take-ons do free up other folks. But he’s not got pace or height, and hasn’t had end product for a while. Martinelli has pace, and scores a little more frequently, but he’s still not quite there. Sterling hasn’t helped at all. Hopefully one of them can get off the mark in the cup match this week.
Think we still need a better attacking option, Saka and Havertz can’t carry the whole load.

Ealing

without MO this team does not click.

Matthinc

We win differently. Did you watch the PSG game?

Giuseppe Hovno

It’s been almost 24 hours since Saka last scored. Disgraceful

Ash

Don’t worry, Arteta will play Saka against Preston, and he will score 2-3 goals.

Heavenly Chapecoense

That was a top top top top goal, absolutely top.

Amos Promise

The only striker we need now is Samu Omorodion. We also need a right footed Central defender like Ronald Araujo of Barcalona OR we buy both defensive younsters: David Odogu and Vitor Reis and groom them. Havertz should fall into attacking midfield where he is best at, if we get Omorodion.

Dr. Gooner

I like Omorodion a lot but he didn’t join Chelsea because of some weird multiparty contract ownership structure that I don’t think Arsenal would stomach either.

Matthinc

Havertz had definitely been best for us as a 9. Much more convincing than as an AM.

Fatgooner

Come the summer Jesus, Zinchenko and Tomi all have to go. All of them are contributing nothing while draining away precious wages.

Jesus had a decent first season at the club but his injuries have made him useless.

He was a poor signing: never a prolific striker and was never fit for long enough.

Shame

Heavenly Chapecoense

Should I agreeeeee? Yes, I do.

ALBangbang

Downvoted for the truth. People are too emotional. The reason the latter Wenger years were so bad is we carried passengers. Players not at the standard, or constantly injured. If we want to keep losing, sure let’s keep players like that. If we want to win we need to get rid.

Dr. Gooner

I think you two are too emotional and forget too easily what a player has done for the club when he hasn’t scored for a while. I bet you were saying all this and worse at Havertz when he first joined and Martinelli before he started to score again too. You can say a lot about Jesus but NEVER that he is a passenger. Have you seen his commitment? The work he gets through is insane. One of the hardest working forwards in the game. Have some respect. The goals will come if he can stay fit, it’s as simple… Read more »

Skinny Ricki

All true.

wrightstuff8

Again absolutely agree. spot on yet again doc

Gervinho is Driving

GJ has had fewer goals and fewer minutes each year for the last 5 years. He is in physical decline. His work rate when available is unimpeachable, but he is absent too frequently to maintain relationships in our evolving systems and to find his shooting boots. This season he’s looked like a new signing who is learning how we play. Massive credit to him for what he’s done here, but it’s reasonable to get (some of) his wages off our books (265k/week through 26-27 season) rather than expect the decline to reverse.

Rosapirescastle

Team I’d play v Preston

…………..Raya
Nicols…Heaven..Kiwior…LMS
……………..Jorgi
……….Ethan……..Merino
Sterling…..Jesus….Leo

Spanish Gooner

I think surely Zinchenko will play, unless something dramatic has happened that we don’t know about. Would love it if that meant LMS pushes further forward, or we gave the Zinchenko left 8 experiment a go.

Heavenly Chapecoense

Arteta needs to orchestrate a lightning fast counter-attack system if he wants to continue parking the bus every time we are up by one goal. What is happening now is that we defend and when our players find themselves in an attacking phase, they act like scoring is no more a priority.

Marcel

What were they thinking?
