Mikel Arteta has confirmed that Kieran Tierney has returned to full fitness and will be part of the Arsenal squad that faces Sporting Lisbon tomorrow night.
The full-back has been sidelined since June when he tore his hamstring during Scotland’s 1-1 draw with Switzerland at the European Championships; an injury that killed off any chances of a summer move following a decent loan spell last season with Real Sociedad.
“We have Kieran Tierney after a long injury,” said Arteta in his pre-game press conference.
“It’s great news that he’s back, he’s been training with the team and he’s available to participate.”
While it’s unlikely the Gunners will call on the Scotland international unless there’s an emergency, the 27-year-old’s return to the bench will likely provide a timely boost as he looks to turn the eye of potential suitors in January.
As things stand, only Takehiro Tomiyasu and Ben White are missing for the Gunners. Both players have knee problems and are expected to be out for the foreseeable future. On the plus side, Myles Lewis-Skelly, who missed Saturday’s 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest, is back in contention.
Sporting Lisbon are no strangers to Arteta who experienced defeat against the Portuguese side in the knockout stages of the Europa League in March 2023. While that double-header wasn’t long ago, tomorrow’s team is likely to have a very different look to the one that drew 2-2 in Lisbon 18 months ago.
“It’s always a good exercise to see the team a few years back,” said Arteta when asked about his team’s progress since that result.
“I watched both games just to have an understanding of how we prepared and what worked and what didn’t and it’s difficult to recognise a team two years later.
“You tend to see and look at the game and other stuff in a different way but it was good. It seems longer ago, to be fair, in a way. But here we are again.
“The good news is we are now in a different competition, a competition that we really want to be in. And be dominant and be important. And this is what we are looking for.”
Tierney can also play center back if needed
He’s played on the left of a back 3 before, but I don’t think I’d ever want him playing CB in a back 4
Wow – that team from 18 months ago is unbelievable.
Tomiyasu missing and the complete lack of information amywhere about his injury is so worrying. I question whether we’ll see him again in an Arsenal shirt.
Would be nice to see KT get some minutes.
I came here to ask about that. Last I remember he had returned to training. Did he pick up something new?
Ah, I had missed this from the press conference pre-Forest: He also updated on Kieran Tierney who was seen in training this week, as well as Takehiro Tomiyasu.“Kieran is not ready yet,” he said. “He had a couple of sessions with the team but not ready yet to be with the team, and Tomiyasu is going to be out as well for a period.“He’s going to be away now for a few weeks to continue with his treatments and as well change a little bit the environment, because psychologically it’s been really, really tough for him as you can imagine.“He’s… Read more »
Itt’s nice to have KT in the team, especially with all the injuries and the physcial demands of that position. Some people act like he’s a liability now, an unwelcome piece of luggage to be disposed of, but there’s still a player in there, as long as injuries haven’t sapped him of the dimensions that made him special: his engine, his burst, and his ferocious delivery from even the widest spaces. Remember, it was Zinchenko’s form that made him redundant in 2022-23, but the team has evolved again. Arteta still doesn’t prefer overlapping fullbacks, but in the right game state… Read more »
Sadly I am not as confident in Tierney as I used to be, even if healthy. Our system has evolved a ton so he fits less than before.
Having said that, he was a good player and a leader while we were rebuilding. He will always be a favorite of mine for his past contributions.
I disagree. I think I fully fit KT would be an excellent squad player. The main problem, however, is that he’s rarely fully fit.
Looking forward to seeing him in training pics in half sleeves while rest of squad cover themselves in multiple layers to protect against London cold.
Best of luck to the lad. He was there for us in darker times.
An important member of our last cup winning team, would be amazing if the team got to Wembley in the League Cup and he played in another winning team there…
Our team from 2023 looks so makeshift. Where was everyone? 😁
Surely that was just a heavily rotated Europa league squad?
We didn’t almost win the league with that line up, did we? Feels like an eternity ago
With Merino changing the left side dynamic. Do you see a narrow opportunity for Tavares to come back in January if his loan conditions allow?
