Arsenal face decisions over loan policy

Marquinhos was loaned out again yesterday, with the winger set to spend the entirety of 2025 with Cruzeiro.

Given that it is his fourth loan spell away from the club (following on from stints at Norwich, Nantes and Fluminense) it seems very unlikely that Marquinhos will have a future at Arsenal.

The fact that the 21-year-old didn’t return to Arsenal at a time when the club were extremely short of wingers is perhaps indicative of where his future lies.

Upon his arrival at Arsenal in 2022 Marquinhos showed some very encouraging signs at U21 level before scoring on his debut for the first-team against Zurich. However, he made just five further senior appearances for the Gunners and his performances during his time on loan haven’t been sufficient to earn a full-time return.

At some stages in recent years Arsenal have had a significant amount of loanees but they currently have just six – all of whom are first-team players.

Of those, Nuno Tavares and Albert Sambi Lokonga appear unlikely to represent Arsenal again, while Fabio Vieira’s long-term future is also uncertain.

Karl Hein could potentially return to Arsenal following his spell at Real Valladolid but would have to be patient if he was to eventually challenge to be the club’s first-choice goalkeeper, while Reiss Nelson is undoubtedly talented but has again struggled with injury.

Arsenal currently do not have any academy players on loan and it will be interesting to see whether that changes during this transfer window.

There are several youth players who could benefit from spells elsewhere, such as Maldini Kacurri, Ismeal Kabia and Jimi Gower, although it remains to be seen whether Arsenal will revert to their previous policy of loaning out many players.

During the first half of the season it seemed that the club are more focused on developing players themselves, with there being risks attached to the loan system as some youngsters find it difficult to adapt to different styles of play.

Loan spells can help the development of a player in some cases – Jack Henry-Francis, for instance, enjoyed a very impressive stint at Sligo Rovers – but there have also been many examples of temporary transfers not working out.

It will be intriguing to see what Arsenal’s approach to loan moves for youngsters will be in this transfer window.

There was mention of us exploring the multi-club model which may give us a way to blood talent or give players in a need of game time a way to get back on track. This is a great way to increase value for an entire football group versus our present state. Many fans want to keep football in the past by not evolving from a corporate or capital structure standpoint but the world around us is evolving and being a purist could result in us falling behind. It’s time for Arsenal to make the leap forward and continue growing as… Read more »

I don’t like the idea of the multi club model. A set of clubs existing purely to feed their parent club and help them circumnavigate certain rules seems to me to fly in the face of sporting integrity. Maybe it is a way to maintain an edge in this competitive landscape but I would still be reluctant to see my club pursue it.

Hunter

Yep I’m with ya. I know about “if you can’t beat em join em” but it stinks and I’d rather not go there

CommunistGunner

I have to say there are things I like and find entertaining about football, that would be sacrificed with the multi club thing.
As much as I would like Arsenal wining some trophies, I wouldn’t put that as my foremost priority as a fan. I can have fun watching games and like feeling connected to the teams.

CommunistGunner

For example the woman’s team winning so many games since Renee Slegers took over has been a great show, even if they are not top of the table.

Chippy

Jesus I’ve just seen solid links to Rashford in Irish media 🤮

Eternal Titi Berg Pat Nostalgia

I like Rashford. He can do a lot of good things with Odegaard’s passes. He can also have more impact than Martinelli in some games.

Chippy

He doesn’t have the attitude or work rate and his finishing is hit or miss. As well as that what affiliation could he have for Arsenal? He’s United born and bred. This would offend me worst than the Sterling signing.

Simon

Surely every strikers finishing is hot or miss. What other options are there?

Simon

*hit or miss

Chippy

Ah no, literally anybody but Rashford please

Santi’s Phonebox

Share your concerns about attitude and work rate. Would be lovely if we got the Rashford who was younger but this version of him is not what we are looking for IMO. Rather see the club sign a younger winger who would have potential resale value.

Alan Sunderland

Good player when in the mood, loan until end of season might be worth it given he has something to prove.

Cannon and ball and arsen’all

We already have the maximum (two) players on loan that we are allowed from the same division (Sterling and Neto)

Dr. Gooner

Interesting, wasn’t aware of that rule

Cannon and ball and arsen’all

You’re letting you standards slip Doc. I did see some chatter about cutting short sterlings loan (which I assumed meant we had someone else in mind from the PL), but I also assume that Raheem wouldn’t be too keen on returning to Chelsea halfway through a season, especially when he would not part of the squad. Can’t really blame him if he was reluctant to cut his loan short. Plus I’m dubious that United would even consider loaning rashford to us; Evan Ferguson maybe, but I think if he goes on loan it’ll be somewhere that he’s guaranteed starts

Arsenalfanthem

Seems like he puts in a great performance 1 in 10 games at this point. Not an upgrade on Martinelli really.

Blackpool Albert

João Pedro would be a nice addition who fits Arteta’s system. A big, technically gifted unit, physical and highly versatile, who also runs his socks off to help defensively. I couldn’t take my eyes off him. BUT, he’s valued at €50 million with 30 months left on his deal with Brighton.

I can only dream. Mon the Arsenal!!

El Mintero

Mon the Biff!

Dr. Gooner

Profile wise he’s perfect for what we need. Long distance ball carrying and aggressive, accurate shooting from around the edge of the box, a one man transition offense. That’s exactly the type of forward I would try to sign. The problem is everything else. You can’t trust him to participate in the off ball structure, so he unbalances this immense defensive platform we’ve worked so hard to make. That’s why we like Williams: works back like a demon.

Alex

Anybody who cries when they score their first Arsenal goal is OK by me
