Wenger: We don’t want a repeat of our ‘terrible’ summer

Having spoken coyly about a possible deal for Lukas Podolski, Arsene Wenger has also paid lip service to other potential signings by stressing that there will not be a repeat of the frantic deadline day business seen last summer.

Making clear that wholesale changes are unlikely, due to the 25 man squad restrictions, the Frenchman trotted out his usual ‘quality not quantity’ line, despite sitting opposite a room packed with journalists drooling at the prospect of another off-season of mind-numbingly boring transfer tittle-tattle.

“You want to make me say that last year was bad and I agree with you – last year was terrible for us because we finished on August 31 at 11.55pm and we do not want to repeat that, of course,” claimed the boss.

“We will not be a lot on the market, quantity-wise I mean. Quality-wise, certainly.

“But the [maximum] number of the squad is 25. We have many players out on loan and we will take a gamble if we find top, top quality of course.”

Polite enough to doff his hat at Arseblog’s favoured LANS description, Wenger continued:

“But don’t forget we have many players out on loan and we have not had Jack Wilshere or Abou Diaby for the whole season.

“These players will be back and it means that number and quality-wise we are strong because we are in the position we are in without these players.”

Of course transfer speculation goes two ways meaning the tabloids will no doubt spend the next six months patting down their hard-ons as they tremble with excitement at the sight of Manchester City’s financial muscle. Let’s hope we get Robin sorted with a new long-term deal before worrying too much about new faces.

He must know we need 3 players. Hopefully we’ll get them (and early).

Negative Twat

Attacking mid,Striker and ?

Devil

Attacking Mid? Jack, Tomas, Rambo, Diaby, Arteta, Ozzy and few kids like izfield, Anek..etc..

Master Bates

jack and Arteta are deeplying playmakers
Aneke,Ozyakup and Eisfeld need to be loaned
Ramsey and Rosicky need competition.

I can’t comment on Diaby , I think he is a top top player , but the rest of the season and EURO12 will decide if he has a future with the club. I am sure if he was fit it be in the starting XI , and if he leaves the he needs replacing

You can’t have enough playmakers

Anon

Ramsey is not a natural attacking mid, Diaby not really (and fear of injury), Wenger prefers a deeper Arteta to calm the midfield, Ozzy probably too young, and the kids well you know what I’m going to say.

It’s the same argument with people who wants to sell Djourou because he’s (supposedly) crap. It’s not unlikely to have 5 defenders out at some point in time again.

Other than Rosicky, we haven’t had a really effective attacking midfielder.

Anon

@masterbates

Doubt Diaby will be out by next season if he doesn’t play. Believe Wenger’s gonna give him one more season to prove his fitness. Can’t get enough of Sagna telling everyone Diaby is the best French midfielder of today.

Jake

@anon the best i have seen of diaby is when he plays as attacking mid. He has far more offensive capabailities than defensive ones.
If Diaby was fit and played a full season at attacking mid, I am sure he would score 10+ goals. He really has an eye for goal and great feat.

Merlin's Panini

@Master Bates wasn’t Jack originally an attacking midfielder but pushed back to learn his trade? He was, I think, somewhat learning from Cesc whilst playing behind him last season. I fully expect him to start playing in that advanced role again. Maybe not straight away, but I’m pretty sure he will be eventually. It seems the whole team have got really good recently at dropping back to cover each others arses when someone goes forward from deep, so in a way, he’ll probably be playing both roles throughout each game. I’m loving watching the Arsenal these days. Long may it… Read more »

Runcorn Gooner

I really really hope that Diaby has a Van Persie type season next year because he is a class player and deserves to go a season without injury.AW would not
persist with him unless he saw a future.

Jack

Don’t we need ‘just three players’ every year? – just a thought. I honestly don’t think there is much wrong with this squad, Diaby – once tipped to be the french player of his generation- will at some point be able to retain fitness, Wilshere back in the side, we will make a strong side. I agree with people in saying its depth (with quality) we lack, I’d like to look at the bench and see it full of possibilities rather than ‘no other alternatives’, remove deadwood, Park and Chamakh are a waste of two seats, replace them with a… Read more »

Apologies on being so late with this post.

Allen

Kind of anoying though because clearly it was Wengers fault we left it to the last minute to sign these players! We had already lost the league by then! At least it’s a lesson learned and hopefully wont happen again!

Master Bates

According to Nigel Winterbun Wenger has already lined up Cesc replacement ,but they(board) wouldn’t buy untill Fabregas was sold, they had no money. so Wenger is not a fault here unless you are calling Winterburn a lying bastard.

Anon

You seem to know a great deal about what actually happens behind the scenes at Arsenal and do not seem bound by any restrictions towards the media at all.

Please enlighten us on the current situation of the backroom going-ons Allen.

Fatgooner

We need three quality players to enable us to challenge for the title.

Matt F

That’s good then, because we already have more than three quality players.

Jayesh Sinha

haha………well said.

D arsenal

with robin staying and all players getting fit at the start of the season, with poldi and one more addition, we will be a force to reckon with. no doubt.

Anon

We’re already a force to reckon with the current squad. Juggernaut momentum we’ve got at the moment, and if our defence stays the same and Jack and Diaby gets back 100% fit some time this season, we’d be incredible

D arsenal

I agree but having poldi and one more player(in place of benayoun probably) will make us even more stronger even if we lose players with injuries. I also see afobe and campbel given chances and doing well. it all depends on which player will be let move on. its going great at the moment.

Theoptimist

When have we EVER had a full first choice team for more than a month?

D arsenal

we can only hope for my fellow gunner, just hope. But I see us getting more of those next season.

Runcorn Gooner

It’s the wear and tear of modern football. All teams suffer and very few have a 1st
team out on a regular basis due to injuries and suspensions.
The important thing is that we have the strength in depth, which we didn’t for a lot
of this season. With new signings and a couple of LANS next year we should really be in the mix next year.
P.S. BFG should be Big Friendly German the alternative word used is highly
disrespectful to him

Jake

I completely agree. Poldi + maybe one more. Would love to see M’Vila, or someone who can play that Song role, whenever Song is suspended/injured. Would probably be good for Song to have some competition, and give Wenger a rotation option so Song doesn’t have to wear himself out by playing every game.

Attasmani

I expect Coquelin and maybe Frimpong, although he might go on loan again, to challenge Song next season and provide cover. I have a very high opinion of Coquelin, he plays in a very intelligent way

Lionel

“We will not be a lot on the market, quantity-wise I mean. Quality-wise, certainly.

super quality players?
sounds like deja-vu, but hey what do I know :p

AFC

Has AW ever deliberately signed a “non” quality player I wonder? This “quality” argument is a bit superfluous I think.

Cygan's Right Foot

Quality is what you make out of it. It’s all about how the manager works with the players. Example: Swansea aren’t graced with high-end quality players but Brendan Rodgers has done an amazing job getting them playing like Arsenal do, pass and move and pass some more (except we’ve now started to lace that with good old fashioned boring boring Arsenal defensive standards). Yes they may come unstuck next season but they will also have money to invest due to their finishing position. If Wenger can get the right player, whether it’s Polodski, Gotze, Hazard or finds the new Henry,… Read more »

Nick

Yes we need to only bring in Quality players. Wenger never advertises who we are after and he shouldn’t because it puts other clubs on alert that player X is open to a move (See ‘Arry anytime Arsenal are interested in a player).

You can’t honestly count Diaby as “Will be back” ever can you? Wilshire I’m sure will come back for the good. But Diaby is an eternal question mark. I’d rather sell him (if we could) and bring in a player who’s not continually on the sick bed.

the only sam is nelson

I wonder if we will see a new strain of LANS whereby instead of a player returning from injury being LANS, RvP signing a new contract will be LANS?

“It’s like signing Messi, only cheaper” <— AW if RvP extends

Or has he already done that?

AFC

RvP signing a new contract is a trophy! 😉

Cygan's Right Foot

My problem with all the players being mentioned is – How many are just great due to their hype? I mean, Cleverly (i expect thumbs down for naming him) was suddenly Utd’s saviour despite being injured for most of the season and Jack is the same for us. Without watching them week in, week out with the hard tackling of your Blackburns, Stokes, Villas, etc… and the raining wind swept days at places like Craven Cottage how do we really know how they’d handle the premier league? Vertonghen to replace squil-dick-face

Sabrina

I agree he’s acting very Nasrish I don’t think I want him any more

Why Squil-dic face? Come on, he’s an Arsenal player, he tries his best and its hardly his fault he’s not quite up to it; its the fault of the person who brought him into the club.

Malaysian Gooner

We have 6 center backs who can play next season. Vermaelen, Koscielny, Mertesacker, Djourou, Miquel and Bartley. So quality and quantity wise, we are well covered in that area. Love to see Hazard. (Or Goetze, though unlikely).
Vertonghen although maybe not obviously needed, is so versatile he can fill in at LB and as a DM and so would make a great squad player.

I have always been a staunch Wenger supporter and I think most would agree that last summer we lost our way slightly. The sales of Fabregas and Nasri were both frustrating as well as inevitable. However the difference is the former was not begrudged and certainly was not engineered like the latter’s. Wenger’s only criticism in my eyes was to have too much belief and leave the replacement buying too late in the day. I have to agree with most of this post.

We need a top quality striker, such as podolski.
After that we could probably do quite well with the return of Wilshere, Diaby, Ryo, and Joel Campbell.

Imagine this…
Szcz
Sagna Kos Verm Gibbs/Santos
Song/Frimpng/Coq
Arteta/Ramsey Rosicky/Wilshere
Walcott/AOC Gervinho/Ryo
RVP/Poldi

Just one new signing.
I would love Goetze or Hazard, but who would you drop?
If anything I would like to see Vertongen, since we could use cover at right back and center back.

Cynical Cunt

Super quality players then.

Like Chamakh and Park

chimasacker

Ryo, Campbell, Coquelin, Wellington Silva, Bartley and not forgetting Pedro Botelho would be new signings. I believe in Arsene and I won’t moan if the right money comes and Robin is sold.

argonaut

There’s a big question mark over whether Wellington would get a special talent visa simply because he’s not played much at all. Campbell probably will get a visa because he’s done well out on loan and could easily come into the first team squad if we offloaded Chamakh.

Theoptimist

Wouldn’t bemoan selling RVP? At the moment RVP epitomises everything Wenger’s recent reign at Arsenal has come to represent. A cheapish, unknown signing with great potential, badly injury prone, who will be sold as he reaches a magnificent peak, whilst winning nothing at a club he badly loves. What was the point? I love RVP and i hope through some miracle he stays, but be realistic, will he really risk staying here and looking back on a career where he won nowt? Cygan's Right Foot

So do we need quality over quantity or quality in quantity? You need to remember that we can only register 25 players and that number gets lower if you don’t register enough homegrown players (hence why Djourou signed a new contract). Under 21’s can’t be registered as homegrown but also don’t take up any of our quota. It’s a balancing act that means we need to rely younger players until the older set can be registered as homegrown.

Every year, the same people amazingly reach a consensus as to the two or three players we absolutely must sign, and it just so happens that these are the players who have been mentioned by the newspapers repeatedly. Santos, Jenkinson, Djourou and Miquel ensure we have enough depth there for any ordinary season (this last season having been ridiculous). we could sell him to rangers in exchange for future season ticket sales revenue and then use that to re-mortgage a downpayment on a quarter share in messi’s right leg, if we channel the funding through Rosie48 in Monaco it’ll be well tasty because we’ll not have to pay NI or tax innit.

I don’t deny the Squid may have been one of Arsenal’s worst ever signings… But I sincerely believe Wenger just overestimated Squid’s ability to adapt to the EPL, perhaps due to age or some other physiological/psychological bar or thought he could overcome his recent dip in form. Seeing as he made 21 appearances for France he couldn’t have been THAT bad at some point. Well my point is – signing Squillaci may have been a bad result, but it was certainly justifiable. Imagine if Wenger had signed a Portuguese unknown for 7-10 million pounds 5 weeks after he moved for… Read more »

I don’t we need any wingers we have Ryo, Ox, Walcott and Gervinho
but there is no harm in adding Robben(supposed to be available for cheap) to the squad who can change a game and score goals.
Definitely need to add a quality goal scoring midfielder. Rosicky and Ramsey is not enough IMO

Trevor

Robben is a cunt.

getz

A very injury-prone cunt.

Cygan's Right Foot

So everyone is agreed – we need a new Goalkeeper and defence. I heard Gary Cahill is alright…..

Voldermort

We need at least 2 probably 3 top quality players if we are to compete for trophies and not just a top four finish. If rvp stays we still need at least one good striker. We also need a proven goal scoring creative midfielder. Yes we missed jack and we can’t count on diaby clearly however good he is or may become. Not sure what to make of wengers comments on loan signings coming back. Denilson, vela, bentner, arshavin, surely these have had thier time. Frimpong could do with more loan time next season after his injury. Yes we have… Read more »

I agree with your list of deaprtures except with Vela. He’s is the only one i’m not sure about as he’s never had a solid run in the team and we’ve seen with Rosicky what that can do.

dink arnold

I agree, love Vela too, but he seems to be enjoying the Spanish league more than Arsenal, and it seems to suit his style better. I remember him making comments of wanting to stay at Real Sociedad permanently. Can’t say I blame him to much either, Wenger was always too reluctant to play him.

Master Bates

Player that we are HEAVILY linked with

-Matias Suarez and Lewis Holtby (same source ,says it’s a done deal)
-Vertoghen ( wants the move and was asked if there is a deal and didn’t comment ,that’s sign )
-Hoilett – he’s said to prefer Arsenal and he is FOR FREE
-Poldoski he just had 38th medical today according to James Olley

Cygan's Right Foot

Lets get Francis Jeffers back, we need a fox-in-the-box. He could only be better this time around….

Goonersville

Junior hoillet yes please
Very impressed by this guy in frankly a crap Blackburn side . Not sure if we need him though if ryo comes back we will be overloaded with wide players on the 4-3-3. Podolski will be deployed on the left of a 4-3-3 like he is for ze Germans

Comedian

Was reading through the comments yes quality additions will make us challenge for titles but we do have quality first team players and quality backups. When you see the whole list of players there are lot of quality backups as well but the main problem with us (just us) are the frequent injuries and its not like any other team we suffer too many injuries at the same time .So the first team players as well as their back ups suffer injury at same time it gives a big problem maybe its our luck. And about fabregas injury free situation… Read more »

Podolski will (hopefully) be a nice addition, I think another attacking midfield player would also be welcome as others have pointed out. The squad is pretty large if you think about it (don’t forget the loaned players).

In a perfect world Chamakh, Park, Bendtner, Vela, Arshavin, and Squillaci will be sold in the summer. Would be foolish to buy 6 direct players for all of them, but if three new faces come in at their expense, then it will be a good summer!

I would also agree that Hazard seems like a Belgian Na$ri, don’t need that.

TexasGooner6

This squad needs a clear out of bad players. Everyone knows the names. Then we need to secure a top notch striker (Podolski?) and an attacking mid (Goetze).

We are solid everywhere else. Remember the guys coming back next year, Henri Lansbury, Ryo Miaichi, Pedro Botelho, Benik Afobe, Mannone, Kyle Bartley, etc….. They will represent the depth in squad we need. If Wenger buys a DM, Bartley will leave. Financially it makes more sense to get him in the squad.

TexasGooner6

Not DM but rather CB. My apologies!

latingooner

Next season the Invincibles 2!!!

NZ Gooner

Fucking hope so
wenger sort it bro,

O Death

The most important thing is that we get Robin signed up to a new contract. If we keep him, all I think we need is Podolski (done deal) and I like the look of Vertonghen and think he’d add something to the squad. Can’t see us getting Gotze this summer and hoping that Diaby gets fit we shouldn’t need him anyway. The big fear is that the board accept a huge offer for Van P and the dream dies.

Henry

Don’t forget that we can sell a lot as well. We need at least 4 players, CB, midfielder, and strikers.

So, is Wenger back in everyone’s good books yet? Or is it still controversial to sing his name?

To be honest what ever Arsen does will be fine with me to be honest. We have a few young players playing in france etc that I havent been able to keep tabs on so cant comment if they are ready or not. , Bendtner, Denilson, Vela, and Squillachi and possibly chamak need to move on for both the good of the players and the club. If we buy polodski and chamak and park do move on I would like to see some of our young strikers become 3rd choice. If squillachi goes I would like to see Vortegen arrive… Read more »

Honestly the biggest signing we can make for next season is RvP RE-signing a contract.

I think we have the foundation for a good pizza and only need some good toppings and Podolski and (hopefully) Verthogen will provide that. I think the two areas where we need addition are cover for Song in the defensive midfield and an able understudy to RvP, a 15 goal a season striker, and Podolski has it in him to be more than just an understudy, and not to mention he is very capable on the left wing as well. With these two additions, I really find much wrong with the team. There is no need to sell anyone immediately,… Read more »
