It has been the most trying of weeks for Arsenal Football Club but for one particular youngster the past seven days have been particularly memorable for the right reasons.
Serge Gnabry had been regarded as a promising talent for some time and it was anticipated that he would feature in the Premier League at some stage this season. What wasn’t expected, however, was that his introduction to the competition would come so early on in the campaign, as injuries to Theo Walcott and then Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain meant that the 17 year old was introduced in the dying stages as a lacklustre Arsenal side lost out to the Canaries.
Gnabry was again called upon very late on against Schalke in midweek, and the dire nature of Arsenal’s overall performance was epitomised by the fact that it was the young German winger who had the side’s first shot on target of the game deep into stoppage time. Gnabry may well remain with the squad for tomorrow’s encounter with QPR, but is likely to receive a more sustained run-out against Reading in the Capital One Cup next week, where his first start for the club could be in the offing.
Much will depend on how quickly the club’s current injury situation clears up, but as things stand Gnabry could be joined by several of his U21 colleagues for the televised trip to the Madejski Stadium. Ignasi Miquel, Nico Yennaris, Martin Angha, Damian Martinez, Hector Bellerin and Thomas Eisfeld all made the squad for the last round against Coventry, and there could be some more unfamiliar names in the mix this time around, with left-back Jernade Meade, who has impressed recently for the U21s, and prodigious striker Chuba Akpom amongst those who could be considered for inclusion in the travelling party.
There will be a more senior element to the side as well, though, with Bacary Sagna, Jack Wilshere and Emmanuel Frimpong likely to be awarded their first starts of the season, whilst fringe squad members like Johan Djourou, Andrey Arshavin and Marouane Chamakh are likely to be called upon again.
With regards to domestic matters concerning Arsenal’s development sides, the U21s, helped by the aforementioned trio of Sagna, Wilshere and Frimpong, have progressed well in recent weeks, and two strikes taken in typically clinical fashion by Eisfeld were enough to see off Everton 2-1 this week.
The U18s, meanwhile, coached for the first time by Steve Gatting following the departure of Pat Holland, struggled against the same opponents, losing 3-1 despite Alex Iwobi scoring his first goal at that level.
There was more bad news for Liam Brady and the club’s development staff as an Arsenal U19 side suffered last minute heartbreak in Marseille, losing 1-0 to the French side in the NextGen Series. The results renders progression to the next phase of the competition a difficult task for Terry Burton’s side, with the two remaining fixtures coming against Athletic Bilbao, home and away.
There was a slither of positivity to take from the Marseille game, though, as Macedonian youth goalkeeper Dejan Iliev, who joined the club late in the summer transfer window, made his debut.
Gnabry = an exciting prospect, a near future star, gold, major coup…….Come on you Gnabry!
Gnabry = future cash cow. Future star, will be sold to make a profit.
does this mean we’re selling the Ox
Nope, it’s Feo not the OX.
thought we only sold our best players
Yes it does. But not until he is a world class player.
When Gnabry enters the field of play he likes to get on with things so I call him…..
Mr. get on with things!
Was that supposed to be funny because it’s so shit?
It was not supposed to be funny, not in the slightest. But thanks for shitting on my parade.
is it meant to waste my time and question why I read the comments at all?
oh wait, I think I just scrolled too far by accident again…
I thought it was funny
Thanks….leave spooner alone, I bet he’s old and grumpy!
Walcott Is as good as done with us then.
I have a question, even though I know this isnt the appropriate place to ask this particular question, but I have been away from a TV with dstv (cable) and thus only have news sites such as this to follow our progress. Anyway, my question is this : how good a captain is Thomas Vermaelen? I mean, in terms of his leadership on the pitch, as well as his performances? Like, when that Dutch asshole wore the armband, he really stepped up, and became a good captain, displaying leadership qualities not through talking, but by scoring goals. Even when he… Read more »
Pure shit.
Gnabry is the latest con guys. This jam tomorrow strategy really works.
Don’t think anyone is getting fooled anymore, Gnabry is a kid, & not a saviour!
Everyone’s keeps saying Usmanov is bad news but he couldn’t be any worse than the numpties in charge now!
TV is in my opinion the wrong captain for the side. Its hard to look past his neglectful nature with regards to his defensive responsibilities. He hasnt had a great start to the season so far and offered little motivation for the team and support for Santos during our last game at FC Schalke. In my opinion the honour should go to Arteta. Hes a very intelligent player who works damn hard and again like RVP he can offer motivation through example. Hes got a great attitude and is vocal when necessary. I think its also a good idea because… Read more »
Prospect for the future…blah blah blah… We’ve been hearing that for ages and the so called prospect fail to bring success to the side. Well, like they say, keep the faith! *yawning
Well we did win a 3rd place trophy last season and a 4th place trophy the season before…..and a….
And the week after they have a spelling test..
I wish people who don’t care about the youth players would stop commenting on the youth articles, it’s jarring. We get it, you’re fed up with “the kids”.
Anyway, I am excited for the Reading game, and I actually want to see Akpom playing in this one, think he will be a star. Gnabry is also very impressive.
Traore’s gonna be a star. Merida, vela, song, gilbert, hoyte, lansbury, emma-thomas, song, cesc, clichy… Name them! Yes some are stars but are they arsenal stars? No. Cos they left without a fucking trophy to show for it! Now, tell me the last time a youth player rose up to the 1st team to become captain, leader, legend and then retire at the club? Piece of shit. They’re all gonna end up same fucking way – being stars for other teams who will end up with the trophies. We’re just a fucking supermarket!
cunt
cunt pointer:
Calling a fellow gooner a cunt because he has an opinion you piece of retarded shit?
Go fuck yourself.
No one wants a John Terry analog at our club. This captain, leader, legend shit.
Analogue, damn it.
